The Role Of Trauma And Poverty In Decision-Making: Implications For Otda Practices, Carolyn Hilarski Ph.D. Nov 2017

The Role Of Trauma And Poverty In Decision-Making: Implications For Otda Practices, Carolyn Hilarski Ph.D.

Public Assistance Development Programs

Decision-making is defined as a method of selecting a particular option among a set of alternatives expecting to produce a desirable outcome. Decision-making is a complex process and can be particularly daunting depending upon an individual’s circumstances. Adults seeking financial assistance and other supports from public and private human services agencies may have significant challenges with the decision-making process due to their current circumstances.

Research suggests poverty affects higher-level thinking skills, including decision-making. One explanation poses a relationship between the state of poverty, the stress/trauma response, and impaired decision-making. For example, studies indicate that when people are experiencing fear and …

Learning To Predict Clinical Outcomes From Soft Tissue Sarcoma Mri, Hamidreza Farhidzadeh Nov 2017

Learning To Predict Clinical Outcomes From Soft Tissue Sarcoma Mri, Hamidreza Farhidzadeh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Soft Tissue Sarcomas (STS) are among the most dangerous diseases, with a 50% mortality rate in the USA in 2016. Heterogeneous responses to the treatments of the same sub-type of STS as well as intra-tumor heterogeneity make the study of biopsies imprecise. Radiologists make efforts to find non-invasive approaches to gather useful and important information regarding characteristics and behaviors of STS tumors, such as aggressiveness and recurrence. Quantitative image analysis is an approach to integrate information extracted using data science, such as data mining and machine learning with biological an clinical data to assist radiologists in making the best recommendation …

Objective: A growing body of research finds that darker skin tone is often associated with poorer physical and mental health in Blacks. However, the psychosocial mechanisms underlying the skin tone-health link remain elusive. The present study seeks to address this knowledge gap by investigating the direct and indirect (through perceived discrimination, socioeconomic status, and self-esteem) effects of skin tone on self-reported physical and mental health.

Design: An urban sample of 130 Blacks aged 35 and above completed a self-administered computerized survey as a part of larger cross-sectional study.

Results: Self-esteem played a particularly important role in mediating the associations between …

Only The Envelope: Opening Up Participation, Surveillance, And Consent In Performance, Vahri Mckenzie Nov 2017

Only The Envelope: Opening Up Participation, Surveillance, And Consent In Performance, Vahri Mckenzie

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As a citizen I have limited understanding of the large-scale data gathering performed through the Australian Government’s Data Retention Act, with which most of us are, perhaps unwittingly, involved. This sense of collective complicity was the main impetus for the research project Only the Envelope, which combines research methodologies to investigate the ways in which we share personal information in the public sphere. The performance stage of the project was a work of live art that offered visitors the intimate experience of viewing an original video while being monitored by a “scientist”—both performer and research assistant—who invited viewers to …

Life Expectancy At Birth In Milwaukee County: A Zip Code-Level Analysis, Erica S. Lecounte, Geoffrey R. Swain Nov 2017

Life Expectancy At Birth In Milwaukee County: A Zip Code-Level Analysis, Erica S. Lecounte, Geoffrey R. Swain

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: Life expectancy at birth is used as a barometer of the health and well-being of a population. Life expectancies vary widely across Wisconsin counties. While much of the analysis of life expectancy in Wisconsin has focused on counties, there may be important differences in life expectancy within counties by zip code.

Methods: To calculate life expectancy, death count data and population estimates were entered into an abridged life table using the Chiang methodology. Data were linked with measures from the American Community Survey to examine the relationship between life expectancy and zip code characteristics.

Results: Life expectancy varies greatly …

"Toll-Free" Pathways For Production Of Type I Interferons, Ling Wang, Shunbin Ning Nov 2017

"Toll-Free" Pathways For Production Of Type I Interferons, Ling Wang, Shunbin Ning

ETSU Faculty Works

Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) are recognized by different cellular pathogen recognition receptors (PRRs), which are expressed on cell membrane or in the cytoplasm of cells of the innate immune system. Nucleic acids derived from pathogens or from certain cellular conditions represent a large category of PAMPs/DAMPs that trigger production of type I interferons (IFN-I) in addition to pro-inflammatory cytokines, by specifically binding to intracellular Toll-like receptors or cytosolic receptors. These cytosolic receptors, which are not related to TLRs and we call them "Toll-free" receptors, include the RNA-sensing RIG-I like receptors (RLRs), the DNA-sensing HIN200 family, …

Mixing Times Of Organic Molecules Within Secondary Organic Aerosol Particles: A Global Planetary Boundary Layer Perspective, Adrian M. Maclean, Christopher L. Butenhoff, James W. Grayson, Kelley Barsanti, Jose L. Jimenez, Allan K. Bertram

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

When simulating the formation and life cycle of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) with chemical transport models, it is often assumed that organic molecules are well mixed within SOA particles on the timescale of 1 h. While this assumption has been debated vigorously in the literature, the issue remains unresolved in part due to a lack of information on the mixing times within SOA particles as a function of both temperature and relative humidity. Using laboratory data, meteorological fields, and a chemical transport model, we estimated how often mixing times are < 1 h within SOA in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), the region of the atmosphere where SOA concentrations are on average the highest. First, a parameterization for viscosity as a function of temperature and RH was developed for α-pinene SOA using room-temperature and low-temperature viscosity data for α-pinene SOA generated in the laboratory using mass concentrations of ∼ 1000 µg m−3. Based on this parameterization, the mixing times within α-pinene SOA are < 1 h for 98.5 % and 99.9 % of the occurrences in the PBL during January and July, respectively, when concentrations are significant (total organic aerosol concentrations are > 0.5 µg m−3 at the surface). Next, as a starting …

The Role Of Talin2 In Breast Cancer Tumorigenesis And Metastasis, Liqing Li, Xiang Li, Lei Qi, Piotr G. Rychahou, Naser Jafari, Cai Huang

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Recent studies show that talin2 has a higher affinity to β-integrin tails and is indispensable for traction force generation and cell invasion. However, its roles in cell migration, cancer cell metastasis and tumorigenesis remain to be determined. Here, we used MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells as a model to define the roles of talin2 in cell migration, invasion, metastasis and tumorigenesis. We show here that talin2 knockdown (KD) inhibited cell migration and focal adhesion dynamics, a key step in cell migration, and that talin2 knockout (KO) inhibited cell invasion and traction force generation, the latter is crucial for cell invasion. …

Deliberative (and educational) theories typically predict knowledge gains will be enhanced by information structure and discussion. In two studies, we experimentally manipulated key features of deliberative public engagement (information, instructions, and discussion) and measured impacts on cognitive-affective engagement and knowledge about nanotechnology. We also examined the direct and moderating impacts of individual differences in need for cognition and gender. Findings indicated little impact of information (organized by topic or by pro-con relevance). Instructions (prompts to think critically) decreased engagement in Study 1, and increased it in Study 2, but did not impact postknowledge. Group discussion had strong positive benefits for …

Parker, Beatriz Mello, Craig E. Stanley Jr., Miguel Lentino, Maria Alexandra Garcia-Amado, Michael Cranfield, Sergei L. Kosakovsky Pond, Ananias A. Escalante

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Haemosporidians are a diverse group of vector-borne parasitic protozoa that includes the agents of human malaria; however, most of the described species are found in birds and reptiles. Although our understanding of these parasites’ diversity has expanded by analyses of their mitochondrial genes, there is limited information on these genes’ evolutionary rates. Here, 114 mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA) were studied from species belonging to four genera: Leucocytozoon, Haemoproteus, Hepatocystis, and Plasmodium. Contrary to previous assertions, the mtDNA is phylogenetically informative. The inferred phylogeny showed that, like the genus Plasmodium, the Leucocytozoon and Haemoproteus genera are not monophyletic groups. Although …

A Statistical Estimator For Determining The Limits Of Contemporary And Historic Phenology, William D. Pearse, Charles C. Davis, David W. Inouye, Richard B. Primack, T. Jonathan Davies

Climate change affects not just where species are found, but also when species’ key life-history events occur—their phenology. Measuring such changes in timing is often hampered by a reliance on biased survey data: surveys identify that an event has taken place (for example, the flower is in bloom), but not when that event happened (for example, the flower bloomed yesterday). Here, we show that this problem can be circumvented using statistical estimators, which can provide accurate and unbiased estimates from sparsely sampled observations. We demonstrate that such methods can resolve an ongoing debate about the relative timings of the onset …

Contributions Of Citizen Science To Landscape Democracy: Potentials And Challenges Of Current Approaches, Bj Shaw, H Draux, Mg Martín, J Martin, C Bieling

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

For landscape research to function in a democratic landscape governance, it must achieve two things. One, it must integrate stakeholder perspectives at multiple steps of the research process, and two, it must effectively communicate its knowledge and insights. Citizen science can be described as the involvement of the public in the scientific process, through a range of different approaches. We ask what such approaches can bring the landscape research and its stakeholders closer together. We survey the field of citizen science and present a number of typologies of approaches. Next, we introduce three applications of citizen science in the landscape …

Basic Emotions And Adaptation. A Computational And Evolutionary Model, D Pacella, M Ponticorvo, O Gigliotta, O Miglino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The core principles of the evolutionary theories of emotions declare that affective states represent crucial drives for action selection in the environment and regulated the behavior and adaptation of natural agents in ancestrally recurrent situations. While many different studies used autonomous artificial agents to simulate emotional responses and the way these patterns can affect decision-making, few are the approaches that tried to analyze the evolutionary emergence of affective behaviors directly from the specific adaptive problems posed by the ancestral environment. A model of the evolution of affective behaviors is presented using simulated artificial agents equipped with neural networks and physically …

Faculty And Staff Knowledge And Perceptions Of African American College Students With Bipolar Disorder Experiences While Attending A Predominantly White Institution, Tiffany Sharell Zachery

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There are few qualitative studies that document the knowledge and perceptions of faculty and staff about college students that has bipolar disorder. Previous studies of college students with mental health challenges have been found to focus only on a particular race, be outdated, largely quantified (Stein, 2014), or only focused on certain disorders such as: autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, or depression. This qualitative study responded to this gap in the literature by gaining an understanding of university faculty and staff knowledge and perceptions of African American college students with bipolar disorder experiences while attending a Predominantly White Institution, their perceptions …

When, How, And Why Did The West Antarctic Ice Sheet Retreat In The Ross Sea Since The Last Glacial Maximum Using Foraminiferal And Porewater Geochemistry, Matthew Decesare Nov 2017

When, How, And Why Did The West Antarctic Ice Sheet Retreat In The Ross Sea Since The Last Glacial Maximum Using Foraminiferal And Porewater Geochemistry, Matthew Decesare

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Antarctic Ice Sheets (AIS) began to retreat from their Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) position sometime after 19,000 years ago. However, the corrosive waters circulating around Antarctica has prevented the recovery of radiocarbon-dateable material, hindering the development of deglacial chronologies. During Expedition NBP1502B to the eastern Ross Sea, an unprecedented quantity of fossil foraminifera and bivalves were recovered. Radiocarbon-dated specimens have been used to constrain the timing of West-AIS retreat from Whales Deep basin and Ross Bank. Whales Deep samples show that the WAIS retreated from its LGM position on the continental shelf edge by 14,700 ± 400 calibrated radiocarbon …
