Epinotia Nisella: An Unrecorded Host And Mode Of Feeding (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), William E. Miller
Epinotia Nisella: An Unrecorded Host And Mode Of Feeding (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), William E. Miller
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The larva of Epinotia nisella is best known as a feeder in female catkins of Populus, primarily P. tremuloides Michx. in North America. In Minnesota, adults were reared from larvae boring in current-growth branchlets of P. balsamifera L., with no sign of like infestation in neighboring P. tremuloides, which has thinner branchlets. The behavioral variance is explained as plasticity in feeding biology, a characteristic of insects utilizing host reproductive structures whose abundance is periodic.

Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Winter Wheat: Host Plant Resistance Relationships, Stanley G. Wellso
Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Winter Wheat: Host Plant Resistance Relationships, Stanley G. Wellso
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The cereal leaf beetle was introduced into North America from Europe prior to 1960. An overview of the control of the insect in North America is presented with major emphasis on host plant resistance. The length and density of the adaxial trichomes (pubescence or leaf hairs) convey resistance to wheat, and the amount of resistance can be estimated mathematically without the insect being present.

Parasitism Of Ancistrocerus Antilope (Hymenoptera: Eumenidae) By Leucospis Affinis (Hymenoptera: Leucospididae), David P. Cowan
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The chalcid wasp Leucospis affinis has been known to parasitize only megachilid bees. Its rare occurrence as a parasite of the eumenid wasp Ancistrocerus antilope indicates that eumenid wasps may be a large resource this chalcid is not exploiting.

Impact Of The Poplar-Gall Saperda, Saperda Inornata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) On A Hybrid Populus Plantation In Michigan, Lincoln M. Moore, Louis F. Wilson
Impact Of The Poplar-Gall Saperda, Saperda Inornata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) On A Hybrid Populus Plantation In Michigan, Lincoln M. Moore, Louis F. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Saperda inornata attacks on hybrid Populus were monitored in a stand for four years after planting. More than 60% of the whips were attacked the first year, resulting in a mean of 1.6 galls/tree (range 0-8). Branch attacks superseded stem attacks in the third and fourth years. Saperda injury significantly reduced height because of leader breakage after the second-year attacks, but the injured trees grew rapidly and recovered much of the height in the third and fourth years. Saperdas killed 4% of the trees during the study, but this was no more than would be expected in a newly established …

Pitfall Trap Collections Of Ground Beetle Larvae (Coleoptera: Carabidae) In Kentucky Alfalfa Fields, R J. Barney, B. C. Pass
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Pitfall traps were installed in alfalfa fields to monitor the seasonality and abundance of immature ground beetles. Head capsule widths were determined by instar for Evarthrus sodalis, Harpalus pennsylvanicus, Chlaenius tricolor, Scarites subterraneus, Amara cupreolata, and A. impuncticollis. Seasonality of larval and adult catches indicated that E. sodalis, H. pennsylvanicus and A. impuncticollis overwinter in a larval diapause while A. cupreolata and S. subterraneus overwinter in the adult stage.

Biology. Ecology, Larval Taxonomy, And Distribution Of Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera) In Wisconsin, Kurt L. Schmude, William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
About 43.000 larvae and 1800 adults of Hydropsychidae from Wisconsin were studied. These included Diplectrona modesta, Macrostemum zebratum, Parapsyche apicalis, Potamyia flava, eight species of Ceratopsyche, and 11 species of Hydropsyche, but because their larvae cannot be identified the nine species of Cheumatopsyche known from Wisconsin were not included. Keys were developed to separate larvae of species of Ceratopsyche and Hydropsyche that were collected in Wisconsin or are likely to occur here, and notes are provided to facilitate identification of closely related species. Two forms of Ceratopsyche morosa are distinguished, and the larva of Hydropsyche pIacoda is described. Most …

Chemical, Natural, And Cultural Control Of Hyadaphis Tataricae (Homoptera: Aphididae) On Honeysuckle, D. L. Mahr, T. G. Dittl
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Hyadaphis tataricae is an aphid pest of honeysuckle relatively new to the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of North America. Feeding results in severly deformed terminals (witches' brooms). Studies were conducted on natural, chemical, and cultural control. Foliar-applied systemic insecticides provided excellent knock-down and 3-4 weeks of residual control. Although diazinon also provided good knock-down, its residual activity was shorter. Malathion provided suppression but did not protect plants from injury. A tree and shrub soap wash did not provide control. Oxydemeton methyl provided best results of soil-applied systemics. Of 385 aphidophagous predators collected, 85% were syrphid larvae. The remainder were …

Neuronal Degeneration And Short-Term Memory Impairment After Tbi, Obiamaraije Igwe
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) was associated with impaired short-term memory with causes of vehicle accidents and falls. Protein plaques containing fibrinogen (Fg), are associated with memory loss. After TBI, Fg in blood was higher than normal (>~2 mg/ml), which resulted in increased Fg in extravascular space. Therefore, Fg bonded to its endothelial receptor intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). Fg then interacted with cellular prion protein (PrPC), which had a strong effect on the loss of memory and cognition. Mechanisms of Fg and PrPC complex formation and its functional implication are not known. This present study tested the level of Fg-PrPC …

Microbial And Genomic Analysis Of Environmental Samples In Search Of Pathogenic Salmonella, Jorie L. Skutas
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Salmonellosis or “food poisoning” is a foodborne infection brought on by the pathogen Salmonella from the ingestion of the bacterium on contaminated foods such as vegetables. Infection from Salmonella leads to the highest incidence of hospitalizations and deaths each year, compared to any other bacterial foodborne illness. South Florida is the second largest agricultural winter vegetable producer in the United States, and contamination of vegetables is often observed in preharvest practices. A hardy bacterium, Salmonella, has been shown to live up to 6 weeks in soil and water up to 42°C without a host.

How Did I Get Here? Testing The Translation Of The Morris Water Maze And The Influence Of Hemoglobin A1c On Spatial Navigation Performance, Colleen Pappas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Changes in cognitive status occur with aging and significant attention has been placed on developing interventions to possibly delay cognitive decline and identifying risk factors that exacerbate cognitive deficits. One issue that arises when studying interventions is that they do not always effectively translate from animal models to human subjects. When testing potentially modifiable risk factors related to cognitive impairment, more sensitive metrics could help in identifying targets for intervention at earlier time-points. Therefore, the aims of the current dissertation were twofold. The first study examined the ability to translate between species using a common behavioral paradigm, the Morris water …
