Analysis Of Biofouling Effect On The Fatigue Life And Energy Performance Of Wave Energy Converter System, Shun-Han Yang, Jonas W. Ringsberg, Erland Johnson

MARENER 2017

This study presents an analysis of a wave energy converter (WEC) system consisting of a buoy, a mooring system, and a power cable connected to a hub. The design service life of the investigated WEC is 25 years. During this long period, its service life will be influenced by marine biofouling due to the biological activity in the water.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of biofouling with regard to the energy performance of the WEC and the fatigue lives of the mooring lines and power cable. The marine biofouling is modelled by an increase in …

Evolution Of Clinical Trials Throughout History, Emma M. Nellhaus, Todd H. Davies Jan 2017

Evolution Of Clinical Trials Throughout History, Emma M. Nellhaus, Todd H. Davies

Marshall Journal of Medicine

The history of clinical research accounts for the high ethical, scientific, and regulatory standards represented in current practice. In this review, we aim to describe the advances that grew from failures and provide a comprehensive view of how the current gold standard of clinical practice was born. This discussion of the evolution of clinical trials considers the length of time and efforts that were made in order to designate the primary objective, which is providing better care for our patients. A gradual, historic progression of scientific methods such as comparison of interventions, randomization, blinding, and placebos in clinical trials demonstrates …

Inferior Stemi Complicated By Retroperitoneal Hemorrhage Due To Ruptured Aaa, Farley B. Neasman Iii, Melissa D. Lester, Nepal C. Chowdhury

Marshall Journal of Medicine

When patients present with life threatening conditions, a rapid cost-benefit analysis prioritizes care and commits treatment to a certain course that, in the case of ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) treated with drug-eluting stents (DES), could be fatal if there is any deviation. Antiplatelet therapy is vital and secondary concerns (i.e. bleeding diatheses) may accept suboptimal outcomes – in rare cases, another life-threatening condition may be unmasked, the treatment for which runs directly counter to the first. We present a case of STEMI with high clot burden treated with multiple DES, complicated by retroperitoneal hemorrhage due to a ruptured abdominal …

Patents, Hidden Novelty, And Food Safety, Jeanette M. Roorda Jan 2017

Patents, Hidden Novelty, And Food Safety, Jeanette M. Roorda

Florida Law Review

This Note discusses how federal agency policy results in a lack of access to patent-protected genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for independent food safety testing. The U.S. GMO policy is a combination of biotechnology regulations and biotechnology intellectual property protections. Intellectual property protection for the developers of new organisms has increased as the technology has advanced from manual pollination to genetic modification methods. Initially the only protection available was in the form of trade secrets, but the protection has increased incrementally to now include full utility patent protection. This Note evaluates the interactions between U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) GMO …

Technical Standards, Standards-Setting Organizations And Intellectual Property: A Survey Of The Literature (With An Emphasis On Empirical Approaches), Jorge L. Contreras

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Important theoretical work relating to standards has been done in the areas of SSO dynamics, firm behavior, market effects of patents, and royalty pricing. This work has been supplemented by a significant body of research and empirical data on the acquisition and disclosure of patents within SSOs, particularly in the ICT sector. Several important catalogs and analyses of SSO patent policies now exist, together with rich databases of SSO membership and policy data. Despite this large body of literature, there are numerous areas at the confluence of intellectual property and standardization that warrant further investigation. These include: the influence and …

Seed Dormancy-Breaking In A Cold Desert Shrub In Relation To Sand Temperature And Moisture, Huiliang Liu, Buhailiqiemu Abudureheman, Lingwei Zhang, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin, Daoyuan Zhang Jan 2017

Seed Dormancy-Breaking In A Cold Desert Shrub In Relation To Sand Temperature And Moisture, Huiliang Liu, Buhailiqiemu Abudureheman, Lingwei Zhang, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin, Daoyuan Zhang

Biology Faculty Publications

Seasonal periodicity of seed germination and its relationship to seasonal changes in temperature and soil moisture have been well studied in seeds of species with physiological dormancy. However, relatively little information is available on the role of these environmental factors in controlling germination of seeds with physical dormancy (PY). Our primary aim was to determine if seeds of the cold desert sand dune semi-shrub Eremosparton songoricum exhibits seasonal periodicity of seed germination and the relationship between seed dormancy break and soil temperature and moisture. In the laboratory, seeds incubated on dry, wet, wet-dry and dry-wet sand were exposed to a …

Cortical Correlates Of The Auditory Frequency-Following And Onset Responses: Eeg And Fmri Evidence, Emily B.J. Coffey, Gabriella Musacchia, Robert J. Zatorre

All Faculty Scholarship

The frequency-following response (FFR) is a measure of the brain's periodic sound encoding. It is of increasing importance for studying the human auditory nervous system due to numerous associations with auditory cognition and dysfunction. Although the FFR is widely interpreted as originating from brainstem nuclei, a recent study using MEG suggested that there is also a right-lateralized contribution from the auditory cortex at the fundamental frequency (Coffey et al., 2016b). Our objectives in the present work were to validate and better localize this result using a completely different neuroimaging modality and to document the relationships between the FFR, the onset …

Predicting Disease-Related Genes Using Integrated Biomedical Networks, Jiajie Peng, Kun Bai, Xuequn Shang, Guohua Wang, Hansheng Xue, Shuilin Jin, Liang Cheng, Yadong Wang, Jin Chen

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

Background: Identifying the genes associated to human diseases is crucial for disease diagnosis and drug design. Computational approaches, esp. the network-based approaches, have been recently developed to identify disease-related genes effectively from the existing biomedical networks. Meanwhile, the advance in biotechnology enables researchers to produce multi-omics data, enriching our understanding on human diseases, and revealing the complex relationships between genes and diseases. However, none of the existing computational approaches is able to integrate the huge amount of omics data into a weighted integrated network and utilize it to enhance disease related gene discovery.

Results: We propose a new network-based disease …

Staph Bacteria From First Breath The Interweaving Of The Nasal Microbiome With The Intricate And Complex Nose, Alan L. Gillen Jan 2017

Staph Bacteria From First Breath The Interweaving Of The Nasal Microbiome With The Intricate And Complex Nose, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many microbes live in a mutualistic relationship with the human body, make up the human microbiome, and play a role in our health by stimulating and modulating the immune system. Man’s body is “covered” both inside and outside with millions of microbes that play a role in maintaining normal bodily functions and sustaining life in our changing world. The inner nose in the human body is colonized by millions of microbes during the first week of life. This internal colonization of the upper respiratory system is termed our nasal microbiome. Though we cannot see it, this microbiome is important for …

Analysis Of Proprioceptive Sensory Innervation Of The Mouse Soleus: A Whole-Mount Muscle Approach, Martha Jean Sonner, Marie C. Walters, David R. Ladle Jan 2017

Analysis Of Proprioceptive Sensory Innervation Of The Mouse Soleus: A Whole-Mount Muscle Approach, Martha Jean Sonner, Marie C. Walters, David R. Ladle

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Muscle proprioceptive afferents provide feedback critical for successful execution of motor tasks via specialized mechanoreceptors housed within skeletal muscles: muscle spindles, supplied by group Ia and group II afferents, and Golgi tendon organs, supplied by group Ib afferents. The morphology of these proprioceptors and their associated afferents has been studied extensively in the cat soleus, and to a lesser degree, in the rat; however, quantitative analyses of proprioceptive innervation in the mouse soleus are comparatively limited. The present study employed genetically-encoded fluorescent reporting systems to label and analyze muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, and the proprioceptive sensory neuron subpopulations supplying …

Do Education And Personal Relationships Reduce The Stigma Of Those Labelled?, Jessica Rose Johnson Jan 2017

Do Education And Personal Relationships Reduce The Stigma Of Those Labelled?, Jessica Rose Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Labels exist within society for many reasons. Labels exist within school systems to benefit students by providing them with the best possible education. This includes providing accommodations when appropriate and guaranteeing the least-restrictive environment for them to grow and succeed. While labels are designed to help students, they sometimes have negative side effects, such as stigma that could result in stigma and subsequently low self-esteem or poor self-image. This study examines 93 students' responses for a connection between relationships with those who are labelled and attitudes and beliefs about those who are labelled educationally, as well as a possible relationship …

Kebebasan Morfologis Dalam Budaya Konsumen Human Enhancement Technology: Studi Kasus Budaya Konsumen Obat Non-Terapeutik Pada Pemuda, Sony Matin Abdussalam

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Nowadays, technological innovations and sciences have reached the stage of modification and improvement of the capacity of the human body. This technology varies from prosthetic devices, implants, plastic surgery, drugs, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and others. Several previous studies have shown that the advancement of this technological intervention has created a consumer culture of human enhancement products and services, for instance, non-therapeutic drugs. However, previous discussions about human enhancement products and services failed to provide further explanation on morphological freedom from the perspective of consumer culture. Morphological freedom is an individual right to modify or otherwise, refuse to modify one’s physical …
