Bringing Van Hiele And Piaget Together: A Case For Topology In Early Mathematics Learning, Whitney George
Bringing Van Hiele And Piaget Together: A Case For Topology In Early Mathematics Learning, Whitney George
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Topological concepts arise naturally in young children's spatial reasoning yet topology is not part of our current K-12 education. In this paper, we extend the van Hiele model of spatial reasoning using Piaget's theory of representational space. By merging these two existing theories, we are able to place topological concepts in a context that is age appropriate.
Metaphors And Mathematical Identity: Math Is Like A Tornado In Kansas, Carmen M. Latterell, Janelle L. Wilson
Metaphors And Mathematical Identity: Math Is Like A Tornado In Kansas, Carmen M. Latterell, Janelle L. Wilson
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Mathematical identity is an individual’s concept of who he or she is mathematically. In this paper, metaphors for mathematics from elementary education majors are compared to metaphors created by secondary mathematics teaching majors. The analysis demonstrates a basic difference in the mathematical identity of the two groups, with the latter group having more holistic conceptions of mathematics than the first group. Elementary education majors describe mathematics as an ongoing struggle in which the mathematics is active, and they are the victims. The secondary teaching mathematics majors describe mathematics as an ongoing struggle in which they are active.

Psychology, Counseling Psychology, And Professional Counseling: Shared Roots, Challenges, And Opportunities, Peggy Brady‐Amoon, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman
Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications
Psychology, counseling psychology, and professional counseling are at a crossroad. The growing movement to establish professional counseling as a distinct profession, based on an increasingly narrow definition of professional identity, is particularly relevant to counseling psychologists and professional counselors and has implications for the broader field of psychology. A brief systematic historical analysis of these professional specialties in the U.S. provides the context to examine current challenges, including proposed restriction of master’s level training, licensure or other authorization to practice, and employment to graduates of programs accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). …

Immigrants, Cultural Distance, And Trade Costs, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse
Immigrants, Cultural Distance, And Trade Costs, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse
Economics
We examine the effects of immigrants and cross-societal cultural differences on bilateral trade costs using two alternative measures of cultural differences (i.e. cultural distance and genetic distance). We find that bilateral trade costs generally increase with a rise in the cultural distance between trading partners but fall with a rise in the stock of immigrants. This implies that immigrants counter bilateral trade costs that are associated with greater cultural differences. Our observation is relevant from both migration and trade policy perspectives as it provides further evidence that immigrants serve as conduits for bridging cultural differences, facilitate international transactions, and enhance …

DEEPEND Datasets
Shelf and slope waters in the Deep Water Horizon oil spill (DWHOS) area are known to serve as critical spawning, nursery, and foraging habitat of several important oceanic species including billfishes (e.g. blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish), tunas (bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna), and other pelagic taxa (swordfish, dolphinfishes). The aim of this component was to further investigate potential ecological effects of the DWHOS on pelagic fishes during the early life period. Larval fishes were sampled from 48 stations in the northern Gulf of Mexico and cruise data was collected at each site including latitude/longitude, date, time and environmental data (sea …

Sorry Guys, But Women Make Better Investors Than Men, Singapore Management University

New research confirms a superior performance by female traders. Women have had a pretty bad reputation in global financial markets. As investors, the perception is that they joined the game too late, they saved too little and they invested too conservatively.

Cancer may be induced by many environmental and physiological conditions. Infections with viruses, bacteria and parasites have been recognized for years to be associated with human carcinogenicity. Here we review current concepts of carcinogenicity and its associations with parasitic infections. The helminth diseases schistosomiasis, opisthorchiasis, and clonorchiasis are highly carcinogenic while the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the causing agent of Chagas disease, has a dual role in the development of cancer, including both carcinogenic and anticancer properties. Although malaria per se does not appear to be causative in carcinogenesis, it is strongly associated with the occurrence of endemic Burkitt lymphoma in …
Yeast Help Identify Cytopathic Factors Of Zika Virus, Michael I. Bukrinsky
Yeast Help Identify Cytopathic Factors Of Zika Virus, Michael I. Bukrinsky
Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications
Accumulating evidence implicates Zika virus (ZIKV) in pathogenesis of microcephaly in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. However, it remains unclear which viral proteins are responsible for these effects and what are the underlying mechanisms of their pathogenic activity. A recent paper by Drs. Zhao and Gallo, and their colleagues at University of Maryland in Baltimore used fission yeast for genome-wide analysis of ZIKV proteins. They demonstrated cytopathogenic activity for seven ZIKV proteins, anaC, C, prM, M, E, NS2B and NS4A. This activity was shown to be dependent on oxidative stress, and for NS4A they demonstrated involvement of the TOR …

Emerging Strategies Of Targeting Lipoprotein Lipase For Metabolic And Cardiovascular Diseases, Werner J. Geldenhuys, Li Lin, Altaf S. Darvesh, Prabodh Sadana
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Although statins and other pharmacological approaches have improved the management of lipid abnormalities, there exists a need for newer treatment modalities especially for the management of hypertriglyceridemia. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL), by promoting hydrolytic cleavage of the triglyceride core of lipoproteins, is a crucial node in the management of plasma lipid levels. Although LPL expression and activity modulation is observed as a pleiotropic action of some the commonly used lipid lowering drugs, the deliberate development of drugs targeting LPL has not occurred yet. In this review, we present the biology of LPL, highlight the LPL modulation property of currently used drugs …

Novel Gene-Sequence Markers For Isolate Tracking Within Monilinia Fructicola Lesions, Madeline E. Dowling, Guido Schnabel, Harriet G. Boatwright, Sydney E. Everhart
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Background: Monilinia fructicola is a diverse pathogen of pome and stone fruits that causes severe economic losses each year. However, little is known about inoculum flow within or between orchards and pathogen establishment in an orchard, because few methods exist for detecting diversity or tracking isolates over time. SSR loci are an effective option, but may be confounded by a high degree of mutability and potential sensitivity to abiotic stress.
Results: Through transcriptome analysis, we identified novel markers mrr1, DHFR and MfCYP01 and validated stability of these markers under fungicide stress in natural infection sites. Nucleotide variation …

Clustered Pain Procedures In Skin-To-Skin Contact (Ssc) Position For Full Term Newborns, Raouth R. Kostandy, Susan M. Ludington-Hoe
Nursing Faculty Publications
As a part of their routine care, full term newborns face many painful procedures immediately after birth and during the first couple days of life. Skin-to-Skin Contact (SSC) has been recommended as a non-pharmacological pain management intervention in newborns. However, the use of SSC in labor and delivery rooms as well as in postnatal units and nurseries is limited due to the discomfort that the nurses and phlebotomists themselves experience during positioning the newborns and themselves to complete these routine procedures. The objective of this paper is to describe a step-by-step procedure that was developed and used in a randomized …
The Influence Of Height On Academic Outcomes, Devon Haskell Gorry
The Influence Of Height On Academic Outcomes, Devon Haskell Gorry
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
This paper examines whether the height premium for academic outcomes is driven by unequal opportunities for tall individuals. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, this paper shows that taller individuals typically earn higher grades and attain more schooling, but the associations are not uniform across school size. Height is only associated with better outcomes for students attending large schools and these improvements are concentrated among males. Data suggest that height contributes more to sports participation and school satisfaction in large schools where resources are more scarce. Thus, differential opportunities or treatment across height in large schools …

The Proteomic Responses Of Gill Tissue In Tidally And Subtidally-Acclimated Mussel Congeners (Mytilus Trossulus And Mytilus Galloprovincialis) To Acute Aerial-Emersion Hypoxia, Jaclyn Denise Campbell
Master's Theses
Understanding species-specific physiological tolerances to environmental extremes is key in determining the factors that contribute to regulating species distribution. This understanding will aid in determining which species will manage to thrive in a changing global climate. According to the IPCC (2013) it is expected that, in the coming years, many different types of abiotic factors will change as a result of global climate change. The intertidal habitat is a model habitat for studying environmental extremes as it is located at the interface between the marine and terrestrial environments, making it one of the most stressful marine habitats. It is characterized …

Strong Metal-Support Interactions: An Extra Layer Of Complexity, Bert D. Chandler
Chemistry Faculty Research
Strong interactions between oxide supports and catalytic metal particles can lead to inhibitive oxide layers forming over the active metal catalyst. Now, adsorbate-induced metal–support interactions have been shown to lead to a porous overlayer in the Rh/TiO2 system that tunes catalyst activity, improving its selectivity for the partial reduction of CO2.

Aging Gracefully: The Art Of Elegant Kenosis, Mary A. Pandiani
Aging Gracefully: The Art Of Elegant Kenosis, Mary A. Pandiani
Doctor of Ministry
Within American culture, the fear of aging creates an obsessive focus on staying young. The Christian church acquiesces to this fear by avoiding the imperative conversation about aging, putting at risk those in the second half of life. The beauty and shadow side of aging offer a unique opportunity to counter the cultural norm, through contemplation in spiritual- and self-awareness. A contemplative life cultivates a place to face the realities of aging. By deepening a relationship with God and others, the aging follower of Jesus Christ navigates a way through the highs and lows of getting older. Research in spirituality …
