The Arctic Council: Twenty Years In The Making And Moving Forward, Matthew Richwalder Feb 2017

The Arctic Council: Twenty Years In The Making And Moving Forward, Matthew Richwalder

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

This comment is about the Arctic Council. The Arctic Council (the Council) is an inter-governmental forum promoting cooperation and interaction among the Arctic states, indigenous peoples, and other inhabitants of the Arctic region on issues of sustainability and environmental protection. The Council has eight member States: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, United States, Russia, and Iceland. There are also observer States, who are non-Arctic countries and permanent participants, six indigenous peoples groups living in the Arctic. This comment delves into the history of the Council, discusses its starting goals, and how it has evolved over the last twenty years. This …

The Arctic In The Public Order Of The World Community, Charles H. Norchi Feb 2017

The Arctic In The Public Order Of The World Community, Charles H. Norchi

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

From early ages of exploration, the Arctic idea has resided in collective memories well beyond polar realms. For people who live in the Arctic, that idea is a way of life that incorporates traditions and indigenous knowledge evolved to cope with demanding conditions. Consequences of cryospheric changes are causing states and non-states to assert more intense claims to Arctic resources. The Arctic is a base of power, wealth, and other values. Competence to make and apply law in a manner that accommodates inclusive versus exclusive demands in the common interest is of great import to the public order of the …

Stem High School Teachers’ Views Of Implementing Pbl: An Investigation Using Anecdote Circles, Aimée L. Dechambeau, Susan E. Ramlo Feb 2017

Stem High School Teachers’ Views Of Implementing Pbl: An Investigation Using Anecdote Circles, Aimée L. Dechambeau, Susan E. Ramlo

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been gaining in popularity, especially within the context of STEM-based (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) schools. Program assessments for these schools typically focus on student standardized test scores rather than the needs of the teachers. This study utilized anecdote circles, storytelling via moderated group discussions, to investigate teachers’ needs related to developing and implementing authentic, interdisciplinary PBL activities in an urban, public STEM high school. Teacher experiences and viewpoints were explored within three broad themes: assessment; coaching and training; and authentic learning. The analyses provide insights for transitioning a school for effective PBL implementation as well …

Transcriptomes Reflect The Phenotypes Of Undifferentiated, Granulocyte And Macrophage Forms Of Hl-60/S4 Cells, David B. Mark Welch, Anna Jauch, Jörg Langowski, Ada L. Olins, Donald E. Olins Feb 2017

Transcriptomes Reflect The Phenotypes Of Undifferentiated, Granulocyte And Macrophage Forms Of Hl-60/S4 Cells, David B. Mark Welch, Anna Jauch, Jörg Langowski, Ada L. Olins, Donald E. Olins

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

To understand the chromatin changes underlying differential gene expression during induced differentiation of human leukemic HL-60/S4 cells, we conducted RNA-Seq analysis on quadruplicate cultures of undifferentiated, granulocytic- and macrophage-differentiated cell forms. More than half of mapped genes exhibited altered transcript levels in the differentiated cell forms. In general, more genes showed increased mRNA levels in the granulocytic form and in the macrophage form, than showed decreased levels. The majority of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were significantly enriched in genes that exhibited differential transcript levels after either RA or TPA treatment. Changes in transcript levels for groups …

Chronic low dose inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure leads to changes in gene expression and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation. During this transformation, cells adopt a fibroblast-like phenotype accompanied by profound gene expression changes. While many mechanisms have been implicated in this transformation, studies that focus on the role of epigenetic alterations in this process are just emerging. DNA methylation controls gene expression in physiologic and pathologic states. Several studies show alterations in DNA methylation patterns in iAs-mediated pathogenesis, but these studies focused on single genes. We present a comprehensive genome-wide DNA methylation analysis using methyl-sequencing to measure changes between normal and iAs-transformed cells. …

The Potential Scientist’S Dilemma: How The Masculine Framing Of Science Shapes Friendships And Science Job Aspirations, G. Robin Gauthier, Julia Mcquillan, Patricia Wonch Hill, Amy Spiegel, Judy Diamond

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

In the United States, girls and boys have similar science achievement, yet fewer girls aspire to science careers than boys. This paradox emerges in middle school, when peers begin to play a stronger role in shaping adolescent identities. We use complete network data on a single middle school and theories of gender, identity, and social distance to explore how friendship patterns might influence this gender and science paradox. Three patterns highlight the social dimensions of gendered science persistence: 1) Boys and girls do not differ in self-perceived science potential and science career aspirations; 2) Consistent with gender-based norms, both middle …

Mental Health Of African Asylum-Seekers And Refugees In Hong Kong: Using The Social Determinants Of Health Framework, William Chi Wai Wong, Sealing Cheung, Heidi Yin Hai Miu, Julie Chen, Kelley Ann Loper, Eleanor Holroyd

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Hong Kong is non-signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, and has no systematic domestic policies committed to the rights of asylum-seekers and refugees (ASRs). This creates a tenuous setting for African ASRs there. This study explored how mapped social determinates of health has impacted the mental health and wellbeing of African ASR’s in Hong Kong.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out with 374 African ASRs. The survey comprised of: (a) sociodemographics; (b) health status; (c) health behaviours; and, (d) social experiences. Associations between social determinants of health and depression screen were explored and multivariable …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Deterioration in water clarity by resuspension of dredged sediments is presumed to be a major mechanism by which dredging can impact seagrasses. This report presents findings from a controlled light experiment that aimed to determine the effects of low light stress on the growth of three seagrass species found in the northwest of Western Australia.

Aims

  • To determine the effects of sediment burial stress under dredge-simulated conditions on the growth and health of three seagrass species found in the northwest of Western Australia.
  • Provide guidance and protocols for the application of the research outputs (e.g. seagrass burial stress:response relationships, sub-lethal …

Obesity has been associated with increased incidence and mortality of a wide variety of human cancers including colorectal cancer. However, the molecular mechanism by which adipocytes regulate the metabolism of colon cancer cells remains elusive. In this study, we showed that adipocytes isolated from adipose tissues of colon cancer patients have an important role in modulating cellular metabolism to support tumor growth and survival. Abundant adipocytes were found in close association with invasive tumor cells in colon cancer patients. Co-culture of adipocytes with colon cancer cells led to a transfer of free fatty acids that released from the adipocytes to …

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz Feb 2017

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Malaria has been humanity’s worst public health problem throughout recorded history. Mathematical methods are needed to understand which factors are relevant to the disease and to develop counter-measures against it. This article and the accompanying exercises provide examples of those methods for use in lower- or upper-level courses dealing with probability, statistics, or population modeling. These can be used to illustrate such concepts as correlation, causation, conditional probability, and independence. The article explains how the apparent link between sickle cell trait and resistance to malaria was first verified in Uganda using the chi-squared probability distribution. It goes on to explain …

Some Comments On Multiple Discovery In Mathematics, Robin W. Whitty

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Among perhaps many things common to Kuratowski's Theorem in graph theory, Reidemeister's Theorem in topology, and Cook's Theorem in theoretical computer science is this: all belong to the phenomenon of simultaneous discovery in mathematics. We are interested to know whether this phenomenon, and its close cousin repeated discovery, give rise to meaningful questions regarding causes, trends, categories, etc. With this in view we unearth many more examples, find some tenuous connections and draw some tentative conclusions.
