The Efficacy Of Late Antique Spiritual Practices For Family-Based Adolescent Faith Formation, Kevin M. Young Feb 2017

The Efficacy Of Late Antique Spiritual Practices For Family-Based Adolescent Faith Formation, Kevin M. Young

Doctor of Ministry

Approximately 70 percent of evangelical teenagers drop out of church and stop practicing their faith during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Research indicates that cultural trends are less to blame for these negative trends than the utilization of ineffective methodologies for faith formation. This dissertation argues that the utilization of modern learning techniques in conjunction with adapted spiritual formation practices from Late Antiquity, within the context of family, and coordinated by a church community best ensures a stable and enduring faith for the next generation. Section 1 addresses the problems inherent to adolescent faith formation within the context of …

GSCE Faculty Publications

Background: Early indication of an emerging malaria epidemic can provide an opportunity for proactive interventions. Challenges to the identification of nascent malaria epidemics include obtaining recent epidemiological surveillance data, spatially and temporally harmonizing this information with timely data on environmental precursors, applying models for early detection and early warning, and communicating results to public health officials. Automated web-based informatics systems can provide a solution to these problems, but their implementation in real-world settings has been limited.
Methods: The Epidemic Prognosis Incorporating Disease and Environmental Monitoring for Integrated Assessment (EPIDEMIA) computer system was designed and implemented to integrate disease surveillance with …

Public Child Welfare And A Multi-Agency Collaborative: Lessons Learned From The Dreamr Project, Judy Tudor, Efren Gomez, Ramona W. Denby Feb 2017

Public Child Welfare And A Multi-Agency Collaborative: Lessons Learned From The Dreamr Project, Judy Tudor, Efren Gomez, Ramona W. Denby

Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs

A five-year federal demonstration project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children’s Bureau, guided by an implementation science model, sought to increase well-being in youths age 12–21 who had involvement with the child welfare system. By increasing the youths’ relational competency skills, the project targeted the reduction of multiple risk factors, including teen pregnancy, depression, anxiety, stress, and other indicators of adverse psychosocial well-being. The project, led by the local child welfare authority, was implemented by a multi-organization collaborative comprising several private nonprofit child- and family-serving agencies, public health, legal entities, private sector (i.e., technology software …

How Living In The ‘Hood Affects Risky Behaviors Among Latino And African American Youth, Anna Maria Santiago, Eun Lye Lee, Jessica Lee Lucero, Rebecca Wiersma Feb 2017

How Living In The ‘Hood Affects Risky Behaviors Among Latino And African American Youth, Anna Maria Santiago, Eun Lye Lee, Jessica Lee Lucero, Rebecca Wiersma

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Using data from a natural experiment in Denver, we investigate whether the initiation of running away from home, aggressive or violent behavior, and marijuana use during adolescence are statistically related to the neighborhood contexts in which low-income Latino and African American youth were raised. Our analysis is based on retrospective child, caregiver, household, and neighborhood data for a sample of approximately 850 Latino and African American youth whose families were quasi-randomly assigned to public housing operated by the Denver (CO) Housing Authority during part of their childhood. We used Cox PH models and accelerated failure time models to estimate ethnic …

Sacrificial Women: The Unlikely Heroes Of Uwem Akpan's Stories, Mary L. Bauer Feb 2017

Sacrificial Women: The Unlikely Heroes Of Uwem Akpan's Stories, Mary L. Bauer

English Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether the female characters in Fr. Uwem Akpan’s short story collection Say You’re One of Them accurately portray the challenges that African women face in the post-colonial era, particularly when faced with challenges of poverty and violence that threaten the lives of their loved ones. It investigates how these women use the limited devices available to them -- including transactional sex, voluntary starvation, and giving their own lives to protect others – to carry out the traditional role of African women in caring for dependents, including younger siblings. It highlights the impact of societal norms, such as …

Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects on fracture healing of two up-regulators of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in a rat model of an open femoral osteotomy: tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, and the recently reported nutraceutical, COMB-4 (consisting of L-citrulline, Paullinia cupana, ginger and muira puama), given orally for either 14 or 42 days.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral femoral osteotomies were created in 58 male rats and fixed with an intramedullary compression nail. Rats were treated daily either with vehicle, tadalafil or COMB-4. Biomechanical testing of the healed fracture was performed on day 42. The volume, mineral content and bone density …

Regulation Of Trpm7 By Cytosolic Mg2+ And Ph: Insights From Vsp Expression, Pavani Beesetty, Krystyna Blanka Wieczerzak, Tatyana Zhelay, Taku Kaitsuka, Masayuki Matsushita, J. Ashot Kozak

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

TRPM7 is an ion channel/protein kinase belonging to TRP melastatin and eEF2 kinase families. Under physiological conditions, most native TRPM7 channels are inactive, due to inhibition by cytoplasmic Mg2+, protons and polyamines. ITRPM7 is strongly potentiated when cell cytosol is depleted of Mg2+ or alkalinized. In Jurkat T cells, Mg2+ inhibition involves a high and a low affinity inhibitor sites, whereas proton inhibition involves only one site. Like many other TRP channels, TRPM7 is activated by PI(4,5)P2 and suppressed by its hydrolysis. Here we examined Mg2+ and pH inhibition of native TRPM7 channels in HEK293 cells overexpressing voltage-sensitive phospholipid phosphatase …

Revitalization Of Assemblies Of God Churches In Stagnation Or Decline, Mark L. Merrill Feb 2017

Revitalization Of Assemblies Of God Churches In Stagnation Or Decline, Mark L. Merrill

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation examines church revitalization in Assemblies of God churches in the United States experiencing stagnation and decline. It examines a contextualized perspective of various factors, both practical and theological, as well as various approaches that are being utilized in the field. The result is the formulation of an approach to church health from the semiotic perspective of the human body that can be used to diagnose and overcome the pervasive problem of church decline. Section 1 delineates various problems associated with church decline. Statistics and data are used to define the current reality. The problem of church decline will …

Guideline For Radiotherapy With Curative Intent In Patients With Early-Stage Medically Inoperable Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, Conrad Falkson, E Vella, Edward Yu, M El-Mallah, R Mackenzie, P Ellis, Y Ung

Data and Test Instruments

ABSTRACTObjectives For this guideline, we investigated the effectiveness of radiotherapy with curative intent in medicallyinoperable patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (nsclc). Methods The guideline was developed by Cancer Care Ontario’s Program in Evidence-Based Care and by theLung Cancer Disease Site Group through a systematic review of mainly retrospective studies, expert consensus, andformal internal and external reviews.Recommendations Stereotactic body radiation therapy (sbrt) with curative intent is an option that should be considered for patientswith early-stage, node-negative, medically inoperable nsclc.Qualifying Statements Because of the high dose per fraction, the planning process and treatment delivery for sbrt require theuse of advanced technology to …
