Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Theses
When examining an image, a viewer often focuses on what they see and less often on what they are able to see. Nowhere is this as true, and as problematic, as it is with the visual representation of persons of African descent. This study describes how problematic photographic representation was used as a powerful semiotic tool in the Victorian age conquest of the other, was exported to early Hollywood (creating a lucrative hate-based industry), and was then pushed back into the cultural recesses, settling finally into systemic forms of modern oppression, empowered by the invisibility of whiteness. Images from the …

Model Profile For The Federal Programs Director In The State Of Mississippi, Rico Jamel Buckhaulter
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) requires that each school district throughout the state employ a licensed administrator serving as the federal programs coordinator, director, or administrator in a full or part-time capacity (Mississippi Department of Education, 2013). The federal program director is responsible for the management and implementation of federal funds in public schools. Federal funds are defined by law and used to improve student achievement, enhance teacher quality, increase equity and access to educational resources, and provide innovative strategies for recruiting teachers and improving graduation rates (No Child Left Behind, 2001). The work of federal program directors involves …

Projection-Based Rotation Estimation For Video Stabilization, Mahdi Zerara Mr
Projection-Based Rotation Estimation For Video Stabilization, Mahdi Zerara Mr
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Video stabilization has become a routine post-processing enhancement procedure, to remove unwanted shifts from video sequences. This thesis proposes a new computationally optimized approach for image rotational motion estimation, which has been studied and tested on shaky videos. The method is built upon a projection-based algorithm that reduces the 2-D video sequences into vectors of size 1 180, by averaging all the pixel values on the line-segments that cross the rotation center and form angles with the rows of the images, such that ranges from 0 to 179 . From the obtained projected vectors, we perform a 1D cross-correlation-based shift …

Inquiry Based Art Research And The Development Of Artistic Autonomy In The High School Setting, Matthew Crawford
Action Research Projects
This action research study was implemented to determine if conducting arts-‐-‐-‐ based research as a part of the curriculum in my Drawing 2 class would result in more autonomous art by students. The research was ran throughout a twelve-‐-‐-‐week period during the Spring Semester of 2017. The research documented the work of four students through three separate units. The data collected was from students’ workbooks where they documented their process in five components for each unit. Students’ final artwork was also a part of the data collection. This study showed how shifting from a traditional teacher-‐-‐-‐ centered curriculum to a …
How Visual Communication Strategies, Brand Familiarity, And Personal Relevance Influence Instagram Users’ Responses To Brand Content, Lijie Zhou
Dissertations
This study comprehensively investigated the effects of visual themes, visual perspective, personal relevance, and brand familiarity on brand constructions (attitude-toward-brand, brand love, brand respect, and three dimensions of brand image) on Instagram. The study consists of two parts. In Study 1, the main and interaction effects of visual design elements on individuals’ visual attentions, brand recognition, and attitude toward brands were examined by using a 4 (visual theme: customer-centric, employee-centric, product-centric, and non-branded) × 2 (view perspective: first-person view vs. third-person view) between-subject eye-tracking test. In Study 2, a 4 (visual theme: customer-centric, employee-centric, non-brand, and product-centric) ×2 (brand familiarity: …

Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr.
Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr.
Dissertations
Leaders in higher education institutions throughout the United States regard distance learning as an important part of their long-term strategic planning (Allen & Seaman, 2015). Counselor education and supervision training programs are following this trend as demonstrated by the increase of online programs being offered to train professional counselors (Renfro‐Michel, O'Halloran, & Delaney, 2010). Some studies have investigated how online supervision compares to in-person or face-to-face counselor training (e.g., Lenz, Oliver, & Nelson, 2011). However, little is known about counselor educators’ experiences of online group supervision. A phenomenological case study explored the counselor educators’ lived experiences of resistance during online …
Prototyping Mina Loy's Alphabet, Margaret Konkol
Prototyping Mina Loy's Alphabet, Margaret Konkol
English Faculty Publications
An important branch of digital humanities involves prototyping the past. This entails approaching material forms of knowledge as sites within which epistemological and ontological problems may be evaluated as physical embodied practices. This essay discusses the interpretive and methodological implications of using 3D printing technologies to prototype the archival diagrams of a proposed but never constructed plastic segmental alphabet letter kit – a game designed by Mina Loy for F.A.O. Schwarz. Although it is intended as a toy for young children, “The Alphabet that Builds Itself,” is also a work of object typography which articulates a theory of language as …
Typography And The Evolution Of Hebrew Alphabetic Script: Writing Method Of The Sofer, Shayna Tova Blum
Typography And The Evolution Of Hebrew Alphabetic Script: Writing Method Of The Sofer, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
Typography is the study of language letterforms, phonographic alphabetic characters that, when combined with additional characters, form words and/or sentences to express an idea and communicate a message to an audience. The history of typographic design dates back to early civilization and the invention of alphabetic writing systems, formulated and processed through the literary skills of the Hebrew Scribe Ezra whose knowledge and practice offered a significant contribution within a predominantly oral society. By examining the history of Hebrew typography through the discourse of biblical writing systems and alphabetic design, the article addresses the development of Hebrew scripts evolving from …

Matter Under Mind, John F. Lause
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The artist discusses the work for his Masters of Fine Arts exhibition, Mind under Matter, held at the Tipton Gallery in downtown Johnson City, Tennessee. Exhibition dates are from March 27th through April 5th 2017. ‘Matter under Mind’ explores the balance of control and non-control within the art-making process. This technique creates an automatic dialogue resulting in abstraction guided by the subconscious. The title ‘Matter under Mind’ is a slight play on the phrase ‘mind over matter’ emphasizing how matter/material is manipulated by the mind through the making of artwork, and within the mind’s eye or imagination.
The video installation …

The Big World – Reha Erdem And The Magic Of Cinema, Andreas Treske
The Big World – Reha Erdem And The Magic Of Cinema, Andreas Treske
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Reha Erdem’s latest film Big Big World (Koca Dünya) was selected for the “Horizons” (“Orizzonti”) section at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival in 2016 and won a prestigious special jury award. The Venice selection is standing for a tendency to hold on, and celebrate the so-called “World Cinema” along with Hollywood blockbusters and new experimental arthouse films in a festival programming mix, insisting to stop for a moment in time a cinema that is already on the move.

Advances In Neuroscience Imply That Harmful Experiments In Dogs Are Unethical, Jarrod Bailey, Shiranee Pereira
Professional Science Research Ethics Collection
Functional MRI (fMRI) of fully awake and unrestrained dog 'volunteers' has been proven an effective tool to understand the neural circuitry and functioning of the canine brain. Although every dog owner would vouch that dogs are perceptive, cognitive, intuitive and capable of positive emotions/empathy, as indeed substantiated by ethological studies for some time, neurological investigations now corroborate this. These studies show that there exists a striking similarity between dogs and humans in the functioning of the caudate nucleus (associated with pleasure and emotion), and dogs experience positive emotions, empathic-like responses and demonstrate human bonding which, some scientists claim, may be …

Foreground Motion Detection In Compressed Video Data, Bhaskar Dey, Malay Kumar Kundu
Foreground Motion Detection In Compressed Video Data, Bhaskar Dey, Malay Kumar Kundu
Patents
Technologies are generally described to identify foreground motion detection in compressed video data. In some examples, a foreground motion detection module may deter mine transform-coefficient-magnitude sums and motion vector-magnitude sums associated with block coding units (BCUs) in compressed video data without decompressing the video data. The foreground motion detection module may also determine a background mean and a background co-variance associated with the compressed video data. To determine whether the BCU(s) contain foreground motion, the foreground motion detection module may determine a statistic based on the transform-coefficient-magnitude Sums, the motion-vector magnitude sums, the background mean, and the background co-variance and …
Teaching Literacy Skills With Graphic Novels To Elementary Students: Curriculum Unit For Grades 1-6, Staci R. Gulsvig
Teaching Literacy Skills With Graphic Novels To Elementary Students: Curriculum Unit For Grades 1-6, Staci R. Gulsvig
Education
Today, many elementary educators praise teaching graphic novels to all kinds of learners, because they inspire students to build healthy reading habits. Yet, there is a lack of resources for elementary teachers to utilize this genre to teach the literacy skills students need. Those same literacy skills are applied when reading the visual elements of graphic novels. How can elementary teachers use graphic novels in their classroom curriculum to increase student achievement on comprehension skills and strategies? To answer this question I created a multi-grade level curriculum for four to ten students, four days a week, for eight weeks. The …

Walking The Line Between Reality And Fiction In Online Spaces: Understanding The Effects Of Narrative Transportation, Sarah Gretter, Aman Yadav, Benjamin Gleason
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Recent contentions about "fake news" and misinformation online has shed light on the critical need for media literacy at a global scale. Indeed, digital stories are one of the main forms of communication in the 21st century through blogs, videos-sharing websites, forums, or social networks. However, the line between facts and fiction can often become blurry in these online spaces, and being able to distinguish between reality and fantasy can have important consequences in the lives of young Internet users. Using contemporary examples from news stories, fanfiction, advertising, and radicalization, this article outlines the features, affordances, and real-life implications of …
Dtmf Audio Communication For Nao Robots, Kyle Poore
Dtmf Audio Communication For Nao Robots, Kyle Poore
Open Access Theses
We propose an alternative to Wi-Fi for robotic communication, as its increased use in a competition environment has lead to highly overlapping and interfering networks. This interference often causes unreliable transmission of data, which affects teams’ ability to coordinate complex behaviors. Our method uses fixed length Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) messages and uses a basic packet structure designed to reduce data corruption as a result of noise. We conducted twelve different experiments varying the distance between robots and message format, as well as whether the robots are walking or sitting silently. Methods for scheduling messages to avoid crosstalk were …
Perchance To Dream: Art, Mathematics, And Shakespeare, Randall E. Cone
Perchance To Dream: Art, Mathematics, And Shakespeare, Randall E. Cone
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Visual representation of textual works has often aided in the understanding of sophisticated concepts. In the Digital Age this is particularly true, given the advent of natural language processing, the ubiquity of general programming languages, and the maturation of digital visualization. In this article, we eschew the traditional disciplinary boundaries to view and analyze Shakespeare’s works in various ways. Our point of departure is Hamlet, where we first examine the play as a unity — both graphically and analytically. We then focus on Act III, Scene 1, where we analyze one of the most famous passages in English Literature: …

Public Relations Strategies To Manage Collegiate Co-Curricular Programs, Sarah Szweda
Masters Essays
The purpose of this project was to illustrate how principles of communications management, specifically the concepts of branding, audience analysis, relationship building and strategic communication plans, should be utilized in institutions of higher learning to manage and promote involvement in collegiate co-curricular events. This study combines research from student engagement with communication concepts and serves to bridge the gap that exists between literature on student engagement and practical public relations strategies. A case study that analyzes one collegiate cocurricular in terms of those four core concepts of communications management, providing practical findings and suggestions for implementing those strategies at other …
How Can Primary Teachers Use Technology, Primarily Ipads, To Differentiate Language Arts Instruction And Increase Comprehension, Ellen Isaacs
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This project answers the question: how can primary teachers use technology, primarily iPads, to differentiate language arts instruction and increase comprehension? This paper reviews technology resources that can be used in elementary classrooms, focusing on kindergarten, first, and second grades. These resources are analyzed using the SAMR model (Puentedura, 2014), The App Map (Israelson, 2015), and the dimensions of participatory literacy (Roswell & Wohlwend, 2016). A website was created to culminate the findings based off of research, student artifacts, and visuals from the digital resources

From Service To Synergy: Embedding Librarians In A Digital Humanities Project, Janet Hauck
Library Faculty Scholarship
Definitions of the term digital humanities vary, and its place in the academic library is still being explored. Yet exploration is indeed taking place, at large research institutions as well as, increasingly, at smaller colleges and undergraduate libraries. This article details an innovative digital humanities project carried out at an institution of 2,300 undergraduates, where a creative institutional partnership was the key to its success. The project has provided an outstanding opportunity to address the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, while embracing the growing trend on many campuses to showcase student research.
