Substrate-Borne Communication In Chameleons: Do Vibrations Induce Behavioral Changes?, Emily J. Hamilton Sep 2017

Substrate-Borne Communication In Chameleons: Do Vibrations Induce Behavioral Changes?, Emily J. Hamilton

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Understanding the modes of communication used by a species is essential to understanding their ecology, behavior, and evolution. Substrate-borne vibrations have been reported to be produced by the veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus), possibly implemented by use of a gular pouch. We found that veiled chameleons produced vibrations under dominance and mating behavioral contexts. We tested the sensitivity of veiled chameleons to vibrations by placing chameleons, one at a time, on a wooden dowel attached to a permanent magnetic shaker and recording each chameleon’s behavior before, during, and after a three-pulse vibrational stimulus of 25, 50, 150, 300, or 600 Hz. …

International Perspectives On Privacy And Free Expression: Concepts, Conflicts, Consequences, University Of Michigan Law School Sep 2017

International Perspectives On Privacy And Free Expression: Concepts, Conflicts, Consequences, University Of Michigan Law School

Event Materials

This conference contributes to the energetic and transnational dialogue currently going on about privacy: How do we define it? Is it a right, an interest, a value, or something else? Privacy against what? Privacy from whom? Is privacy necessarily in tension with free expression? Or is it often an essential predicate to it? How have different political regimes answered these questions? How do entities and individuals navigate those conflicting transnational approaches?

This is the program for the conference.

Writing The World: Ten Strategies For Internationalizing The Writing Classroom, Stefanie Frigo

Journal of Student Success in Writing (Archived)

In an increasingly global educational and professional environment, it is essential that new graduates are able to communicate across international and local cultural borders and barriers. Given the reach of composition classes, touching almost every undergraduate, first year writing is uniquely positioned to deliver classes that teach written, verbal, and visual communication and enhance intercultural understanding and global competency. One of the greatest challenges that departments face is delivering this content in an innovative and engaging manner, and without requiring an international experience – something beyond the reach of many students. This article offers solutions via ten practical classroom strategies …

User Profile Based Information Retrieval Incorporated With Reinforcement Learning, S. Subitha, S. Sujatha Sep 2017

User Profile Based Information Retrieval Incorporated With Reinforcement Learning, S. Subitha, S. Sujatha

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Information retrieval is a complex process that involves understanding the user’s requirements to provide appropriate and relevant results. This involves combined working of several techniques such as contextual analysis, correlation analysis, sentiment analysis and a good understanding of the user’s profile. This paper presents an effective relevance feedback based information retrieval model that aids in effective retrieval and organization of results such that information relevant to the users are given high priority. The user’s profile is constructed and reinforced with their queries and selection responses. This is iteratively performed such that the user’s profile gets strengthened with better and more …

Influence Of Predicate Sense On Word Order In Sign Languages: Intensional And Extensional Verbs, Donna Jo Napoli, R. Sutton Spence, R. Müller De Quadros Sep 2017

Influence Of Predicate Sense On Word Order In Sign Languages: Intensional And Extensional Verbs, Donna Jo Napoli, R. Sutton Spence, R. Müller De Quadros

Linguistics Faculty Works

We present evidence for the influence of semantics on the order of subject, object, and verb in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) sentences. While some have argued for a prevailing pattern of SVO in Libras, we find a strong tendency for this order in sentences that do not presuppose the existence of the verb’s object, but not in sentences that do, which instead favor SOV. These findings are coherent with those of a recent study on gesture. We argue that the variable influence of the relevant predicates is particularly salient in sign languages, due to the iconic nature of the visual …

The coleoid cephalopods (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish) are masters of rapid, adaptive camouflage. Unlike the slower hormonal chromatophore control of flatfish and chameleons, coleoid mollusks can change body patterns in milliseconds. Visual camouflage in coleoids is driven by a sensorimotor system consisting of visual input of their surroundings, a sophisticated central nervous system for information processing, and a neuromuscular control for body patterning. Motor neurons selectively activate millions of muscles, alternately expanding and reducing the pigmented chromatophores to generate visible brown, red, orange and yellow patterns on the skin. Below the chromatophore-layered skin are two types of reflecting cells, iridophores …

Systems And Methods For Communicating Robot Intentions To Human Beings, Yu Sun, Michael D. Coovert, Ivan Shindev

USF Patents

In one embodiment, communicating robot intentions to human beings involves determining movements that a robot will make to complete a task, visually communicating a long-term intention of the robot that provides an indication of the movements the robot will make in completing the task, and visually communicating a short-tem intention of the robot that provides an indication of a movement of the robot will make within the next few seconds in working toward completing the task.

Industry And Academics, Dan Rucker

Theses

My thesis containts the story of the design management and programming of a major industry design manufacturer and a group of college students.

I was able to build a partnership with Herman Miller and RIT while I worked in R&D at the organization. The metaproject04 effort was what myself and my design team members at Herman Miller were involved in, allowing myself to model design management techniques and connecting two well-established entities in a way that felt like a natural fit for both. The stories of the process and challenges, including the end result work embodies my thesis submission.

Avant L’Appétit: An Augmented Reality Interactive Menu That Elevates The Gourmet Food Experience, Emili Koui Aug 2017

Avant L’Appétit: An Augmented Reality Interactive Menu That Elevates The Gourmet Food Experience, Emili Koui

Theses

Restaurant businesses try to come up with ways to increase and maintain their clientele. In many restaurants, images of food often misrepresent the quality and quantity of the menu item. The results are a disappointment on the customer side, and a loss of clientele on the business side. Gourmet restaurants have the ability to provide consistency, which helps in maintaining their client numbers. However, new customers are hesitant in trying this experience due to reasons of portion size accuracy, ingredient identification, language barrier and dietary preferences.

This thesis investigated how the digitization of a traditional printed menu, can better enhance …

Statefulness And Tangible Interaction In Design Education, Alex Lobos, Tim J. Wood Aug 2017

Statefulness And Tangible Interaction In Design Education, Alex Lobos, Tim J. Wood

Presentations and other scholarship

Interaction in Industrial Design is expanding from tangible realms to intangible digital experiences. In this new environment, Interaction Design provides logical sequences and behaviors that allow users to easily navigate through complex workflows. This paper discusses a framework in which interaction design provides an innovative approach to traditional industrial design. This includes the concept of ‘statefulness’, where the dynamic changes of complex systems are broken down into states that can be defined and manipulated in order to achieve a desired user experience. This framework goes beyond having physical components of a product control digital interfaces and develops experiences that jump …

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen Aug 2017

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen

First Global News Literacy Conference

One challenge for the news literacy instructor/lecture/trainer is to tailor lessons to different class settings. Fortunately, I have had opportunities to design news literacy courses for different class sizes, from small groups to big classes, and for different time durations, from a 3-‐session training course to 10-‐ week and 15-‐week courses, as well as for students of different cultures, from Vietnamese students to Chinese and American students.

In this paper, I primarily review my experience designing and teaching News Literacy courses for two 30-‐ student classes at Ohio University and University of Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition, I share …
