A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Exploration Of A Crowdfunding Entrepreneurial Pitch., Victoria Doyle, Olivia Freeman, Brendan K. O`Rourke
Conference papers
This paper explores multimodal discourse analysis (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2001) as a methodology to address the research question: How are environmentally conscious entrepreneurial ventures constituted in online investment crowd-funding pitches and the communications that surround them? While discourse may be realised in many different ways (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2001 p.5, Bezemer and Jewit, 2010), multimodal discourse analysis focuses on analysing and describing a repertoire of meaning making resources which individuals use in various contexts (visual, gestural, written, actional etc.). Broadband internet and associated technologies mean that these crowdfunding pitches and many other genres tend to be much richer …
Can Big Whales Inspire Big Behaviors? A Study Of Environmental Communication, And Nature Immersion, Theresa Soley
Can Big Whales Inspire Big Behaviors? A Study Of Environmental Communication, And Nature Immersion, Theresa Soley
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Direct contact with wild nature is becoming harder for people to access in present times, yet research suggests that experiencing nature is important to the formation of environmental values, which may lead to conservation behaviors. My thesis experiment theorizes that direct contact with nature has the ability to impact people's behavioral beliefs and intentions toward the environment, applying Icek Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the New Ecological Paradigm Scale as measures. A questionnaire was administered post-whale watching trips in Juneau, Alaska to determine whether whales, direct experience with charismatic megafauna, could stimulate positive attitudes and behaviors toward recycling. …

Marketing The Mountain State: A Large N Study Of User Engagement On Twitter, Kirk Richardson
Marketing The Mountain State: A Large N Study Of User Engagement On Twitter, Kirk Richardson
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
Much of the evolving research on the use of social media in destination marketing emphasizes how information diffusion influences the reputational image of place. The present study uses Twitter data to focus on the relative differences in user engagement across discrete account types. Specifically, this is done to examine how the official destination marketing organization of Montana—the Montana Office of Tourism (MTOT)—performs relative to other account types. Several regression analyses conducted on Twitter data associated with an ongoing MTOT place branding campaign reveal that tweets sent from ‘official’ accounts are more likely to be retweeted, and are estimated to receive …

This paper reflects upon an interdisciplinary design research project ‘Electric Corset and Other Future Histories’ developed by a creative team of design practitioners from the fields of textile, fashion and, product design. The investigation is being undertaken in collaboration with the Nottingham City Museums and Galleries whereby access to their archive of historical garments and accessories is facilitated through working closely with the curator of the Costume and Textile Collection. The aim of the research is to convey the value of accessing archives; the potential role for items of material culture from past lives to inform e-textiles and wearable concepts …
Air And Mimetics: Making Form, Playing Form And Form In Motion, Adriana Ionascu
Air And Mimetics: Making Form, Playing Form And Form In Motion, Adriana Ionascu
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Form and form-making are central to every (object-based) craft practice, therefore the impact of emerging technologies on craft processes which involve software as an approach to form- giving becomes significant in the thinking, making and fabrication of objects. This study investigates the role of digital forming of air as an interactive method in form-finding in ceramic craft. It focuses on the possibilities of generating three-dimensional digital models by using 3D Scanning/Imaging and the ‘Sense’ programme by way of cultivating an integrated digital approach to ceramic craft making. The adoption of software into ceramic crafting involves the assimilation of digital-making into …

An Experimental Approach For The Inclusion Of The Experiential Aspects Of Lighting Through The Design Process Of Atmospheric Luminaires, Natalia Triantafylli, Spyros Bofylatos
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper, based on the capacity of light to form the material area around it, seeks to understand the possibilities towards the implementation of light in design, as an empirical phenomenon. Aiming to extend the concept of atmospheric luminaires and to support their design, a design framework in the form of design tool format is proposed. By understanding the experiential nature of a luminous atmosphere, it becomes clear that its interpretation is personal and subjective and thus the design approach should not be seen as problem solving but as an opportunity for creation and experimentation. The design approach is proposed, …
Beauty Or Brains, Cautious Or Courageous? Gender And Power In Online Visual Designs, Nina Lysbakken
Beauty Or Brains, Cautious Or Courageous? Gender And Power In Online Visual Designs, Nina Lysbakken
Nordes Conference Series
Gendered visual communication is a major part of contemporary, mediated discourse, yet these expressions are seldom reflected upon from a designers' perspective. Whose voices are empowered in tabloid newspapers and gendered magazines? In what ways can we express gender? In this visual essay, I provide an auto-ethnographic perspective, and use personal reflections and visualisations to show a process of deconstructing, shaping and encoding gendered expressions on mobile platforms from my point of view, as a designer and a woman. The essay contributes to research writing methodologies, by questioning conventional ways in which scholarly research is presented. I draw on concepts …
Who Wore It Best? Understanding Mediated Fashion As Design, Synne Skjulstad
Who Wore It Best? Understanding Mediated Fashion As Design, Synne Skjulstad
Nordes Conference Series
How interdisciplinary design practices intersect as a powerful communicational core in fashion is given little attention in design studies. Even as fashion design is a design domain in its own right, this paper argues that our conceptions of power in fashion need to more fully include fashion as a matter of communication design. This paper argues that power is enacted via combinations of material and immaterial articulations of design practices in fashion. Design practices are essential in shaping the tastes, styles, and desires at the heart of fashion, thus rendering fashion design as an expanded field that reaches far beyond …

Computing The Lexicon Morphological-Phonological Interface For Irish Sign Language Sign Realisation, Irene Murtagh
Computing The Lexicon Morphological-Phonological Interface For Irish Sign Language Sign Realisation, Irene Murtagh
The ITB Journal
The first modern linguistic analysis of a signed language was published in 1960 by William C. Stokoe, Jr., a professor of English at Gallaudet University, Washington DC, the only college for the deaf in the world. Nearly sixty years on, research in the area of sign language linguistics has established that signed languages are fully developed natural languages with their own syntax, morphology and phonology. The morphology and phonology of signed languages is concerned among with manual and non-manual features. These include handshapes, head, torso, eyebrow, eye, cheek, mouth, nose, chin and tongue movement and also movement of the shoulders. …

Shifting Focus: The Role Of Visual Literacy In The Twenty-First Century English Classroom, Bryanna Tester
Shifting Focus: The Role Of Visual Literacy In The Twenty-First Century English Classroom, Bryanna Tester
Masters Theses
Ultimately, the English language arts classroom seeks to help make students “literate” members of society. Due to the dominance of images in twenty-first century communication, the term “literate” has also slowly shifted to include an individual’s ability to effectively and accurately communicate with verbal text as well as with visual images and symbols. Although students are native image-viewers, they are not able to be image-readers without instruction and training on how to critically “read” images. Therefore, an English teacher’s literary curriculum is not strictly bound to the written and spoken word. Instruction in reading and writing written texts are vital …

Strategic Advantages Of Visual Violence, Roxanne Brook Vigil
Strategic Advantages Of Visual Violence, Roxanne Brook Vigil
Theses and Dissertations
This research discusses the role of visual violence as it relates to non-state actors within asymmetric warfare as a form of indirect coercion, siting the logic of Thomas Schelling. It argues that irrationality, as a perception from the state actor toward the non-state actor is a rational approach in order to produce the desired fear and publicity. The amount of fear and publicity is measured by the amount of inhumanity that is presented within the visual narration and the amount of irrational hysteria that comes from the audience. In using a comparative and visual analysis, two non-state actors who utilized …
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
As online technology continues to progress, the modes of communication through which content can be shared have exponentially grown. These include advances in navigational options for presenting information and news online. Though the listicle has been around for centuries, the internet has proliferated its growth, as content producers rely on its structure as a vehicle for sharing information. This research shows that in the case of listicles, format had no direct effect on recall, however, participants who had a greater interest in the content showed significantly higher levels of memory sensitivity. This critical finding suggests that news outlets and content …

From Print Propaganda To Meme Activism: The Evolution Of Graphic Communication And Its Effect On Socio-Political Climates And Methods Of Activism, Morgan Grace Gutierrez
Graphic Communication
This project will assess mediums of communication used to create and spread political propaganda, namely from print to digital. The development of graphic communication may provide interesting correlation of how values and ideas are visually represented in society and how the people have reacted to shifting politics. This project is inspired by the recent political climate in the United States, and the continuous impact the media has on the public throughout the many visual forms of communication. Inspiration is also drawn from the advancement of technology in the graphic communication industry. This allows for greater ease of access for the …

Journalism
The following study and subsequent public relations campaign is intended to explore the difficulties, opportunities, caveats and all facets of transitioning a traditional travel media organization to new media. It unearths the pitfalls/barriers that naturally occur and aggregate over time when an organization or journalist (specifically “Journeys of Discovery with Tom Wilmer” in this scenario) has not adapted nor altered their practices for changing common practices in the media industries. In this campaign, journalist Thomas Wilmer is seeking to increase his podcast audience and digital presence.
The research conducted for this study is two-fold. Firstly, the research demonstrates best practices …

Masters Theses
This book is a journal of the conscious looking into my most unconscious behaviors. I documented and observed my unconscious habits, and tracked where they originally came from. Observing myself was both the process and the result of the work. I played a triple role throughout the process. I was an object, an observer, and a conduit. I wrote and became a subject of the writing. I used various forms, styles and voices in this book to align the work experience of these constantly changing roles with the writing experience and to embody different perspectives.
As a result, this book …
