Positions Of Place: Converging Viewpoints In Visual Communication, Gregory J. Schmidt
Positions Of Place: Converging Viewpoints In Visual Communication, Gregory J. Schmidt
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis includes a body of work that explores our visual relationship to the physical spaces and places we inhabit in our everyday lives. Today we live in a complex world where we are bombarded with fragments of information and inundated with distractions. As designers, we are equipped with tools and methods that allow us to experience and interpret our environment through multi-faceted perspectives and from different viewpoints. My approach to graphic design adopts techniques and practices from a mix of different disciplines. The work focuses on a design process that alternates between the parallel depiction of first-person and third-person …
The Institute Of New Feelings: Plastic Identities And Imperfect Surfaces, Weijian Zhou
The Institute Of New Feelings: Plastic Identities And Imperfect Surfaces, Weijian Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Digital media are moldable spaces where an image is simultaneously a thought. This instance and flexibility enables digital existences to be malleable, transformative, situational, and unstable. They are plastic images. Video games generate digital bodies that are a fusion of subjectivities and cybernetic simulations, in a perceivable and ambiguous process. Such bodies are extensions of ourselves, being girlish, imperfect, unfinished and happening—digesting and emitting clusters of feelings, regardless of our biological gender and age. The performative experience of play is progressively departing from spectacle, gambling and competition, and increasingly shifting towards an emotional journey of alternate realities, spreading subjectivities into …
Open / Close: Assimilating Immersive Spaces In Visual Communication, Anika Sarin
Open / Close: Assimilating Immersive Spaces In Visual Communication, Anika Sarin
Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in two spaces obverse to each other: open and closed. An open space develops organically based on how people inhabit it. Interacting with an open space is a dynamic, sporadic, multisensory, immersive, and subjective experience. In such spaces, we are confronted with an alternative aesthetic, one that is in conflict with the seamlessness of a closed space. A closed space is anchored on definite variables like structure, use and boundaries. While interaction between people and space is important, the space is tightly controlled and interaction is designed. Through this thesis project, I present a method that metaphorically …
Planar Refrains, Stephen Anthony Nunes
Planar Refrains, Stephen Anthony Nunes
Theses and Dissertations
My practice explores phenomenal poetic truths that exist in fissures between the sensual and physical qualities of material constructs. Magnifying this confounding interspace, my work activates specific instruments within mutable, relational systems of installation, movement, and documentation. The tools I fabricate function within variable orientations and are implemented as both physical barriers and thresholds into alternate, virtual domains. Intersecting fragments of sound and moving image build a nexus of superimposed spatialities, while material constructions are enveloped in ephemeral intensities. Within this compounded environment, both mind and body are charged as active sites through which durational, contemplative experiences can pass.

Existing Without Permission: A Visual Rhetorical Analysis On Banksy's Nola Children And The Betrayal Of Authority, Phillip J. Tennison
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This study examines eight images by the world renowned—and incognito—graffiti street artist known only as Banksy. The eight images are all of lone children; fourteen paintings comprise the total of Banksy’s 2008 visit to post-Katrina New Orleans. For the research, the eight images of children are referred to collectively as the “NOLA Children Series.” Banksy critics and fans have provided their own names for each piece: Simpsons Boy, Umbrella Girl, Fridge Kite, Levee Boy, Life Preserver Swing, Girl on Stool, and Trumpet Boy 1 & 2. The primary research objective was to understand Banksy’s motives for creating these eight “dramas” …
Three Factors Leading To The Failure Of Communications In Emergency Situations, James E. Burroughs
Three Factors Leading To The Failure Of Communications In Emergency Situations, James E. Burroughs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The failure of communications, particularly related to interoperability, between police and firefighters responding to dangerous situations has resulted in death or injury to themselves or those they strive to protect. Using Grebner's and Shannon and Weaver's conceptualizations of communications theory as the foundation, the purpose of this general qualitative study was to evaluate, from the perspective of first responders, what barriers exist that may impede opportunities for interoperability of communications systems. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 18 experienced first responders from the states of California, New York, and Texas. Interview data were deductively coded …
Utilizing Sysml Viewpoints To Improve Understanding And Communication Of Human Mental Models Within System Design Teams, Elizabeth Anne Patterson
Utilizing Sysml Viewpoints To Improve Understanding And Communication Of Human Mental Models Within System Design Teams, Elizabeth Anne Patterson
Theses
In modern design of complex systems, there is lack of consideration of social elements in Socio-Technical Systems. The Human Mental Model is a vital part of multidisciplinary system design, and can contribute to the potential for system failure when not considered during the design phase. This thesis will examine the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) viewpoints and views to determine whether they illustrate elements of human mental models, and increase communication between individuals holding different perspectives. Two models were created in SysML, the first comparing SysML to mental model graphs, and the second was the Lynx X-ray Observatory, a project in …

Plume Of Feathers: Still Moving Images, Sm Black
Plume Of Feathers: Still Moving Images, Sm Black
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper will explore the relationship between still and moving images in a project consisting of illustration as a visual essay making use of film and still image, which is projected over the live performance of a music album. Here, the manipulation of time to deliver the visual component can, deliberately, alternate between motion and lack of motion to exploit the friction between sound and image, and encourage critical thinking within the audience who is asked to span the gaps and synthesise divergent messages. The practice discussed operates as informed voice within the conversation, with both image and vocals exploring …

The massification of higher education is now a global phenomenon Huge changes in the teaching and learning milieu within colleges. The forces of massification have brought multiple challenges with regard to pedagogy. What kind of pedagogy to employ? The role of the lecturer is to empower learning and it is challenging and complex. There is a need to employ a pedagogy which requires students to do things, to access information, to solve problems, to reflect on what they are doing and make connections to real world problems.
Educational research has revealed a number of important lessons for educators:

Using Multiple Metaphors And Multimodalities As A Semiotic Resource When Teaching Year 2 Students Computational Strategies, Paula M. Mildenhall, Barbara Sherriff
Using Multiple Metaphors And Multimodalities As A Semiotic Resource When Teaching Year 2 Students Computational Strategies, Paula M. Mildenhall, Barbara Sherriff
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Recent research indicates that using multimodal learning experiences can be effective in teaching mathematics. Using a social semiotic lens within a participationist framework, this paper reports on a professional learning collaboration with a primary school teacher designed to explore the use of metaphors and modalities in mathematics instruction. This video case study was conducted in a year 2 classroom over two terms, with the focus on building children’s understanding of computational strategies. The findings revealed that the teacher was able to successfully plan both multimodal and multiple metaphor learning experiences that acted as semiotic resources to support the children’s understanding …
The Value Of Images: Using Pictures And Words To Enhance Intercultural And International Communication, Alun Price, Stuart Medley
The Value Of Images: Using Pictures And Words To Enhance Intercultural And International Communication, Alun Price, Stuart Medley
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
As our institution expands its international offerings it is increasingly important to be able to communicate with intelligent and able people who have not had much exposure to learning in English. It has been difficult however to communicate verbally due to the low English proficiency of international clients and lack of language skills on the part of the Australian participants. This experience in international communication has highlighted the need for alternative methods of communicating information. In communicating with the students from a Japanese university I found that using diagrams and sketches worked well for example, in creating a cartoon of …

Having A Voice And Being Heard: Photography And Children's Communication Through Photovoice, Panizza Allmark, Kylie J. Stevenson, Talhy Stotzer
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Photography can be a powerful tool for self-expression. For those who are less empowered in our community, such as children, photography can provide a voice through images. It is a form of creativity that can provide a new way of seeing. This article examines the potential of photovoice as a meaningful way to develop critical thinking and communication approaches. Photovoice is a method of participatory action research that is innovative in the ways by which it enables participants to identify and represent their surroundings. Photovoice has been used in anthropology, public health, social work and education, and is associated with …
Talent Systems For Law Firms, William D. Henderson
Talent Systems For Law Firms, William D. Henderson
Articles by Maurer Faculty
irtually every large US law firm owes its rise and success to a talent system it adopted several decades ago. These talent systems were effective because they created highly skilled business lawyers in a way that aligned the interests of partners, associates, and clients. The most prominent example is the Cravath System, though other business lawyers throughout the US were making similar discoveries at roughly the same time. The tremendous forward momentum of these first-generation talent systems has created the problem of ahistorical partners — owners who collect the late-stage benefits of a talent system approach without understanding its original …
