Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
With funding from the Meadows Foundation and the Miles Foundation, researchers at CHILDREN AT RISK engaged in a study to examine how participation in Texas public PreKindergarten Pre-K1 is associated with performance on the 3rd Grade State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading assessment.
CHILDREN AT RISK tracked approximately 47,000 students from the 2010-2011 school year to the 2014-2015 school year.2 These students began public Pre-K in 2010 and completed 3rd grade in 2015. The study focused on five major independent school districts (ISD) in Texas (Austin ISD, Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Houston ISD, and San Antonio …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
While diabetes prevalence and cardiovascular risk factors have been increasing among Arab populations worldwide, few studies of Arab Americans have been conducted because of the difficulty in recruiting Arab American participants. Cultural sensitivity and social awareness of different immigrant groups could ensure successful recruitment and retention in clinical studies. While the primary objective of our overall research project was to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Arab Americans, the focus of this article is to describe the methodology used to overcome challenges in recruiting and enrolling Arab Americans for a community-based study. We used novel methods, including open houses, …
Changing Community Variations In Perceptions And Activeness In Response To The Spruce Bark Beetle Outbreak In Alaska, Hua Qin, Courtney G. Flint
Changing Community Variations In Perceptions And Activeness In Response To The Spruce Bark Beetle Outbreak In Alaska, Hua Qin, Courtney G. Flint
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Local sociocultural processes including community perceptions and actions represent the most visible social impacts of various economic and environmental changes. Comparative community analysis has been used to examine diverse community perspectives on a variety of socioeconomic and environmental issues. However, as the temporal dimension of community processes remains understudied, relatively little is known regarding how such community variations change over time. This study draws on longitudinal survey data from six communities on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska to explore temporal shifts in community differences in perceptions and activeness in response to forest disturbance associated with an extensive spruce bark beetle outbreak. The …

From Orphans To Families In Crisis: Parental Rights Matters In Maine Probate Courts, Deirdre M. Smith
Maine Law Review
This Article examines the sources of the contemporary problems associated with the adjudication of parental rights matters in Maine's probate courts and identifies specific reforms to address both the structural and substantive law problems. The Article first reviews the development of Maine's probate courts and their jurisdiction over parental rights matters. It traces the expansion of jurisdiction over children and families from a limited role incidental to the administration of a decedent's estate to the current scope—a range of matters that may result in the limitation, suspension, or termination of the rights of living parents. Maine's probate courts not adjudicate …

Teaching Interprofessional Practice Skills By "Saving Humanity": An Innovative Ipe Curricular Method Using A Cooperative Strategy Board Game, Emily Mccave, Phd, Msw, Lmsw
Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
Statement of Issue
Increasingly, team-based interprofessional (IP) collaboration is the central model of practice for health disciplines (Khalili, Orchard, Laschinger, & Farah, 2013). Yet traditional education models can foster a uniprofessional identity that leads to “turf protection” and subsequent resistance to IP collaboration (Bronstein, 2003, p. 448). Interprofessional education (IPE) models, however, are designed to promote team competency and an IP identity (Lindgard, 2013). IPE activities often focus on building student competency in four core areas: efficient and effective teamwork, effective communication, understanding of professional roles, and shared values (Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), 2016). Innovative IPE activities provide students with …
Care Coordination In Bone Health Screening Between Individual Behaviors And Health Care Services Among Korean-American Women Across Three Age Groups, Young-Shin Lee
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Integrated continuous care is important to prevent and treat brittle bone status in the aging process; however, minority groups often have limited access to health services. The purpose of this study was to identify the care coordination among women’s perceptions about their bone health, information from health care providers, and the results of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) tests across three age groups. The study was a cross-sectional comparative design. A total of 63 Korean American women completed both the assessment of BMD of the femoral neck and an interview survey. One’s own risks of osteoporosis, screening behaviors, and health care …

The Teachable Moment: Engaging Students In Social Justice Movements, Tiffany Yvette Lane, Christine M. Chiarelli-Helminiak, Casey Bohrman, Terrence Lewis
Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications
Social justice has long been at the forefront of the core values of the social work profession. Social workers are charged to confront social injustices and advocate for social change. In 2014, there was a societal response across the United States to the deaths of two African-American men, Mike Brown and Eric Garner, and the decision to not indict the police officers who killed them. The collective reaction was reflective of a country unsettled by the criminal justice system’s ongoing acceptance of structural discrimination. This article will focus on one university’s social work faculty’s collective response to the brutal killings …

Pedagogies Across Borders: Perspectives From Teaching Staff And Students Engaged With Transnational Programmes In Hong Kong., Pj Magne, O Poverjuc, T Heffernan
Plymouth Institute of Education
While there is a continuing growth in the demand for transnational programmes, the pedagogy of transnational education (TNE) remains largely under-researched. In an attempt to understand the nature of the transnational classroom and the implications for the provider of TNE, this paper explores the experiences of staff and students on programmes provided by a UK university in Hong Kong. Findings suggest that the transnational classroom is a complex and demanding environment as it entails multiple contexts, cultures, participants, roles and modes of delivery. This study proposes a range of strategies that aim to develop a shared vision on partnership and …
Exploring The Alchemy Of Qualitative Management Research: Seeking Trustworthiness, Credibility And Rigor Through Crystallization, Heather Stewart, Rod Gapp, Ian Harwood
Exploring The Alchemy Of Qualitative Management Research: Seeking Trustworthiness, Credibility And Rigor Through Crystallization, Heather Stewart, Rod Gapp, Ian Harwood
The Qualitative Report
In this paper we explore crystallization in terms of its contribution to qualitative management research. This exploration of crystallization is based on a postmodern view where we utilize triangulation as a point of departure. Currently, the use of crystallization is underdeveloped in the management discipline. Qualitative literature and metaphors are utilized to develop a focus on moving qualitative management research away from positivist terms. To do this we crystalize crystallization with an emphasis on the embodiment of the qualitative researcher as the primary tool in addition to the development of rigor through credibility and trustworthiness. This conceptual approach can benefit …
Developing Morally Sensitive Policy In The Nicu: Donation After Circulatory Determination Of Death, Michael Van Manen, Nicole Kain
Developing Morally Sensitive Policy In The Nicu: Donation After Circulatory Determination Of Death, Michael Van Manen, Nicole Kain
The Qualitative Report
Policy development is an important activity for the practice of healthcare. Policies, after all, may cultivate common practices and ensure that best available evidence is employed in clinical decision making. Qualitative research and individuals with expertise in qualitative research methods have much to offer policy makers. We were confronted with the situation of developing policy for donation after circulatory death (DCD) for our newborn intensive care program. Due the moral-ethical complexities surrounding DCD, and the limited experience with DCD in this context, we approached policy development from an iterative design perspective employing qualitative methods. We describe our experience in employing …

Using High Fidelity Simulation To Impact Occupational Therapy Student Knowledge, Comfort, And Confidence In Acute Care, Debra M. Gibbs, Mary Dietrich, Emmy Dagnan
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: As the demand for occupational and physical therapists in acute care settings is increasing, students are reporting a need for increased educational preparation to handle the complexities they may face in this setting. This pretest/posttest study examines the impact of an inter-professional high fidelity simulation experience on perceived levels of knowledge, comfort, and confidence among occupational therapy doctorate students when handling an acutely ill patient in an ICU setting.
Methods: Two cohorts of occupational therapy students participated in an inter-professional acute care scenario with high fidelity simulation mannequins (Cohort 1, n = 19; Cohort 2, n = …
Perceptions Of Occupational Therapy Involvement In School Mental Health: A Pilot Study, Susan M. Cahill, Brad E. Egan
Perceptions Of Occupational Therapy Involvement In School Mental Health: A Pilot Study, Susan M. Cahill, Brad E. Egan
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Mental health providers outside of occupational therapy, including those who work in school systems practice, often do not fully understand the contribution that occupational therapy practitioners can make to the delivery of mental health services.
Method: The purpose of this mixed methods pilot study is to describe how instructional support staff from one special education cooperative learned about occupational therapy’s role in school mental health and to explain how this education changed the instructional support staff members’ perceptions regarding the involvement of occupational therapy practitioners in school-based mental health services.
Results: Instructional support staff's perceptions about …
Where Are They Now(?): Two Decades Of Longitudinal Outcome Assessment Data Linking Positive Student, Graduate Student, Career And Life Trajectory Decisions To Participation In Intercollegiate Competitive Debate, Jack E. Rogers, Nicole P. M. Freeman, Arthur R. Rennels
Rennels
National Forensic Journal
In 1997, Rogers (2002, 2007) launched an ambitious cohort-based study to specifically measure student outcomes from forensic participation with direct, empirical comparisons between a debate and non-debate group over an extended period through college, graduate school, professional careers, and life-trajectory decisions. This monograph offers a continuation of those earlier studies in order to provide almost two decades of empirical performance data and outcomes. In order for the reader to place the current study in context, it is helpful to review a brief update of the applicable literature and a brief explanation of the previous two studies before attempting to interpret …

The One Fixed Star In Higher Education: What Standard Of Judicial Scrutiny Should Courts Apply To Compelled Curricular Speech In The Public University Classroom, Joseph J. Martins
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Virtually three-quarters of a century ago, the Supreme Court in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette recognized that the First Amendment protects citizens from being forced to speak. Often, new legal doctrines are announced cautiously and narrowly in anticipation of future judicial development. Not so with Barnette. The Court boldly proclaimed that the right to be free from state-compelled affirmation is so fundamental that it stands as the one “fixed star in our constitutional constellation” that cannot be moved. State assertions of power that seek to coerce citizens to affirm government-approved ideas will inevitably fail, except when narrowly …
