Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker Jan 2017

Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has shown that an astounding number of children have faced adverse childhood experiences. Due to this fact, many of the students sitting in American classrooms have traumatic backgrounds that can cause a variety of side effects including a lack of academic focus, depression, PTSD, and low social-emotional abilities. Schools are the perfect place to implement trauma sensitive frameworks to provide these students an accessible education. Effective trauma sensitive schools are relational, empowering, and consistent. With these traits, research has shown that depression and PTSD symptoms can be reduced, behavior problems can be decreased, and attendance can increase.

Empathy As Sacred Ethic: A Chaplain's Perspective On Difficult End Of Life Cases, Peter L. Bauck

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

Because of our increasingly intercultural world, it can be difficult for patients, families, and medical teams to decide on what they should do for patients who are, in the medical team’s opinion, near the end of life. The family and medical team can hold disparate beliefs and values around what they should do for the patient. Ethics committees often get involved in these difficult end of life cases. These cases are also emotionally charged, especially for the family as they wrestle with the intensity of their loved one’s situation and try to decide what to do. Because of the emotional intensity …

A Call For Gender-Inclusive Global Health Strategies, Michael J. Rovito, Brandon Leonard, Ramon Llamas, James E. Leone, Walker Talton, Ana Fadich, Peter Baker

Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

The WHO's "Global Strategy for Women's, Children's, and Adolescents' Health 2016-2030" (GS-WCAH 2016-2030) is a comprehensive plan developed to improve the lives of women, children, and adolescents. Due to the success in the creation, ratification, and advocacy of the GS-WCAH 2016-2030, the clear health outcome disparities between males and females, and the general absence of male health from existing policies and sponsored programs, it is time now to develop a global strategy specifically drafted to improve the lives of men and boys. The following commentary provides three points for why a male-oriented program, like the GS-WCAH 2016-2030, should be created: …

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy Jan 2017

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy

History Faculty Publications

This article reexamines the roots of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW), the first national organization of women from all state-defined racial groups united against apartheid, founded in 1954. It argues that the deep history of public motherhood in southern Africa was what made FEDSAW possible: biological and symbolic motherhood had long been associated with responsibility for public social life in the region. Moreover, the article demonstrates that the first half of the twentieth century represented a time of profound transformation in the ways that women in southern Africa talked about and experienced motherhood. The influences of both missionary …

Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research

Background: How health care professionals address health literacy as part of the provider-client relationship is important for prevention and promoting self-management and symptom management. Research usually focuses on patients’ health literacy and fails to examine provider practices, thus leaving a gap in the literature and patient outcomes analyses. Objective: The study tested the reliability and validity of a series of questions developed to evaluate health care provider health literacy promotion practices on an interprofessional sample. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study took place between 2013 and 2015. Participants included graduate level health professions students from nursing, midwifery, medicine, pharmacy, and social …

Case Examples In Clinical Supervision: The Challenge Of Mandated Child Abuse Reporting, Sheri Pickover, Sara Golomb, Jocelyn Bennett-Garraway Jan 2017

Case Examples In Clinical Supervision: The Challenge Of Mandated Child Abuse Reporting, Sheri Pickover, Sara Golomb, Jocelyn Bennett-Garraway

Education Faculty Publications

Mandated reporting, while an ethical and legal requirement, often stirs emotions in mental health professionals that may prevent them from making the report. Fear, anxiety and countertransference may all interfere with good judgment. The Clinical Supervisor maintains the responsibility to ensure reports are made but must also address the clinician’s emotional concerns. This article presents two case studies that illustrate ways a supervisor can support the supervisee through mandated reporting, and what can happen when a supervisee fails to comply with the legal mandate.

A Case Study Of Effective Practice In Mathematics Teaching And Learning Informed By Valsiner’S Zone Theory, V Geiger, J Anderson, D Hurrell

Education Papers and Journal Articles

The characteristics that typify an effective teacher of mathematics and the environments that support effective teaching practices have been a long-term focus of educational research. In this article we report on an aspect of a larger study that investigated ‘best practice’ in mathematics teaching and learning across all Australian states and territories. A case study from one Australian state was developed from data collected via classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with school leaders and teachers and analysed using Valsiner’s zone theory. A finding of the study is that ‘successful’ practice is strongly tied to school context and the cultural practices …

Taking Care Of Youth Mentoring Relationships: Red Flags, Repair, And Respectful Resolution, J Maccallum, S Beltman, A Coffey, T Cooper Jan 2017

Taking Care Of Youth Mentoring Relationships: Red Flags, Repair, And Respectful Resolution, J Maccallum, S Beltman, A Coffey, T Cooper

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Mentoring is portrayed in the literature as benefiting young people, but ineffective or early termination of youth mentoring relationships can be detrimental. Researchers have not adequately explored issues surrounding the breakdown of youth mentoring relationships. Underpinned by a socio-ecological perspective, in this exploratory study we consider the various contexts within which these important relationships exist and identify early warning signs or red flags that a mentoring relationship is struggling. We interviewed mentees, mentors, and coordinators from four Western Australian youth mentoring programs about their experiences of mentoring relationships. Our findings suggest that red flags and repair strategies may be specific …

Using A Collaborative Assessment Design To Support Student Learning, S Kennedy-Clark, S Kearney, V Galstaun

Education Papers and Journal Articles

The purpose of the study was to try to develop an understanding of how groups of pre-service teachers organised, planned and built two information and communication technologies (ICT) resources using a learn-technology-by-design framework. The benefits for students in using a learn-by-design approach have been well researched, and the research has covered a broad range of research streams. A design-based research approach underpins the research. This paper presents the observational data, which was collected in an ICT in the Education unit of study. The collaborative design assessment provided pre-service teachers with the opportunity to collaboratively build an Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) resources …

Is It Time For The Risky Classroom? Dealing With Risk And Uncertainty Is A Natural Part Of Adult Life. Yet Modern Children Are Shielded From Risk At Every Opportunity. A Pedagogical Shift Is Required, D O'Connor, V O'Rourke, C Robinson Mcgunnigle, M Mccormack

Education Conference Papers

Risk within learning environments is a much debated topic within early childhood education. The sector sees and understands the benefits of risk but often remain risk adverse. No –one wishes for children to experience injury and as such safety measures are essential. However, risk has also been shown to be essential for holistic development and learning in the early years (Lights, 2014). It is very important in the formation of many important skills and contributes greatly to children’s holistic health (Brussoni, Olsen, Pike & Sleet, 2012). Contemporary research and the most up-to-date wisdom requires educators to embrace risk and risky …
