To Use Silence Or Not Use Silence? A Qualitative Study Of Psychoanalysts’ Experience With Silence In Psychotherapy, Topaz Baumvoll M.S. Jan 2026

To Use Silence Or Not Use Silence? A Qualitative Study Of Psychoanalysts’ Experience With Silence In Psychotherapy, Topaz Baumvoll M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Silence plays a multifaceted role within psychoanalytic theory and practice, yet remains understudied in therapeutic communication. While existing literature acknowledges silence as a significant aspect of therapeutic interaction, empirical studies specifically focusing on how psychoanalysts employ silence are scarce. This qualitative study addressed this gap by exploring how psychoanalysts understood and utilized silence in psychodynamic psychotherapy, identifying factors that influenced their perceptions of its use, and examining whether silence was experienced as conducive or obstructive to therapeutic interaction. Thirteen psychoanalysts (10 women, 3 men), aged 43 to 70, with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and representing heterosexual and gay/queer orientations, …

Experiences Of Jewish Women In Continuous Identity Cognitive Therapy And The Conceptual Alignment Of Treatment Goals Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Stages 3 And 4, Elisabeth Zigelstein Jan 2026

Experiences Of Jewish Women In Continuous Identity Cognitive Therapy And The Conceptual Alignment Of Treatment Goals Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Stages 3 And 4, Elisabeth Zigelstein

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Stages 1 and 2 of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which emphasize behavioral control and emotional experiencing, have received considerable operational and empirical attention, unlike the latter two stages of DBT which are meant to help individuals develop meaningful and fulfilling lives. CI-CT is a novel 12-week manualized group-psychotherapy intervention designed to enhance individuals’ connection to their life stories, future selves, and positive identities, while supporting the development of meaning-making and goal-directed behavior following suicidal crises and/or in the context of severe mental illness. This qualitative study explored 13 Jewish women’s experiences participating in a 10-session adaptation of CI-CT, following completion …

Pastors In Crisis: A Proactive Prayer Life As A Measure Against Pastoral Burnout, Seth W. Hinrichs Jan 2026

Pastors In Crisis: A Proactive Prayer Life As A Measure Against Pastoral Burnout, Seth W. Hinrichs

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Doctor of Ministry project examines the relationship between a proactive prayer life and pastoral burnout among senior pastors in Converge North Central churches. Addressing the increasing prevalence of burnout in vocational ministry, the study reframes burnout as a fundamentally theological issue rather than merely a psychological or organizational problem. Drawing on the work of Ray Anderson and others, the project argues that burnout reflects a misalignment between a pastor’s lived theology—particularly in identity, calling, and dependence on God—and the realities of ministry practice. The research integrates biblical-theological reflection, a review of contemporary literature, and quantitative field research through a …

Cultivating Belonging In Church Communities: A Repeatable Model For Small Groups, Clancy Z. Kiener Jan 2026

Cultivating Belonging In Church Communities: A Repeatable Model For Small Groups, Clancy Z. Kiener

Doctor of Ministry

NPO Statement for this project is as follows:

Many individuals experience a diminished sense of belonging within religious environments. This lack of belonging can lead to disengagement and limit opportunities for authentic spiritual and communal formation. Structured, repeatable, moderator-led small groups— guided by trained moderators—offer a practical approach for fostering connection and strengthening a sense of belonging within church communities.

A key insight from this project is that many people in church communities experience a persistent sense of not belonging, even when they attend, serve, and believe alongside others. The research shows that belonging is not automatically created by shared …

The Physiology Of Burnout: A Neuro Sustainable Model For Social Work Stability, Mindi Radtke Jan 2026

The Physiology Of Burnout: A Neuro Sustainable Model For Social Work Stability, Mindi Radtke

Social Work Student Works

The Physiology of BurnoutThis independent study introduces NeuroSustainability, a professional framework designed to move the discourse of clinician endurance away from "individual grit" and toward the preservation of Cognitive Capital. In the modern social work landscape, practitioners are trapped in an Implementation Paradox, where the biological necessity of recovery is undermined by high-friction work environments and systemic noise. This chronic friction facilitates allostatic overload, a state of biological debt that triggers structural remodeling of the brain: specifically, the atrophy of the prefrontal cortex-the seat of complex decision-making-and the hypertrophy of the amygdala, which increases reactive anxiety.  The paper identifies three …

Constructing And Deconstructing Homelessness: Challenging The Stigmatization Of The Unhoused Through Lived Experience, Brenna Jones Jan 2026

Constructing And Deconstructing Homelessness: Challenging The Stigmatization Of The Unhoused Through Lived Experience, Brenna Jones

Theses and Dissertations

As homelessness rises across the United States, public discourse plays an important role in shaping how the housing crisis is understood and addressed. This study examines how homelessness is constructed through local media narratives and how these constructions shape the experiences of unhoused individuals. Using a case study of Greater Bangor, Maine, this research combines a critical content analysis of 315 news articles from the Bangor Daily News (2020-2025) with in-depth interviews with 18 unhoused and precariously housed individuals. The findings demonstrate how media portrayals construct homelessness as a stigmatized identity associated with disorder, addiction, and danger. These narratives contribute …

What Is A Standard? Perspectives On Acd’S Standards For Leadership In Oral Healthcare, N. Karl Haden Phd, Facd Jan 2026

What Is A Standard? Perspectives On Acd’S Standards For Leadership In Oral Healthcare, N. Karl Haden Phd, Facd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

The American College of Dentists’ new Standards for Leadership in Oral Healthcare mark the first attempt in dentistry to articulate standards specifically for leadership, complementing the broader orientation offered by the Ethics Handbook for Dentistry. This article explores the basic question, “What is a standard?” Close reading of the document indicates at least three distinct but related senses of the term: an expectation, a norm, and a guiding principle. The article offers an interpretation of how these three senses fit together coherently. Referencing the Handbook, the article argues that the leadership standards are most impactful only when habituated, when practiced …

Enhancing Paraprofessional Self-Efficacy And Skill: The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Professional Learning On Support For Middle School Students With Disabilitie, Betsy Jean Paddock

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice explored the impact of a seven-week professional learning series on trauma-informed practices for paraprofessionals and certified educators supporting Students with Disabilities (SWDs) at Smithville Middle School. Grounded in Adult Learning Theory, Transformative Learning Theory, and Trauma Theory, the study employed a mixed methods design to examine changes in participants’ self-efficacy, trauma literacy, and professional collaboration. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-surveys using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and the Trauma Literacy Survey (TLS), while qualitative data were gathered through reflective journals and focus group discussions. Quantitative results revealed statistically significant …

Lifetime Tenure, Aging, And Cognitive Decline, David H. Churchwell Jan 2026

Lifetime Tenure, Aging, And Cognitive Decline, David H. Churchwell

Mitchell Hamline Law Review

Aging is a fact of life. We all go through it, and we all experience it. But not all of us are federal judges, and not all of us hold positions of power for life. Aging impacts each of us differently, and there are good reasons to have experienced, elder individuals in roles that benefit from such experience, such as serving as a judge. However, age correlates with an increased prevalence of cognitive decline, and that correlation risks harming the judiciary’s legitimacy. This Article argues that constitutional incentives for federal judges permit lengthy judicial tenures, which increases the risk of …

Community Place Attachment As A Significant Correlate Of Motivation To Change Substance Use Behavior Among Adults Who Inject Drugs In Rural U.S., Janet K. Otachi, Shawndaya S. Thrasher, Keith J. Watts, Juma S. Mwenda, Hilary L. Surratt Jan 2026

Community Place Attachment As A Significant Correlate Of Motivation To Change Substance Use Behavior Among Adults Who Inject Drugs In Rural U.S., Janet K. Otachi, Shawndaya S. Thrasher, Keith J. Watts, Juma S. Mwenda, Hilary L. Surratt

Social Work Faculty Publications

Introduction: While motivation is critical for substance use disorder (SUD) recovery, many individuals fail to engage in treatment. The need to belong is a fundamental human motivation, yet the role of community place attachment (CPA) as a social asset in fostering motivation to change substance use behaviors (MCSUB) among people who inject drugs (PWID) is understudied. This paper examines the effect of CPA on PWIDs’ MCSUB.

Methodology: Cross-sectional data were collected from 350 PWID recruited from syringe service programs in rural Appalachian Kentucky (2018–2021). We used hierarchical multivariable linear regression to assess the association between CPA and MCSUB, controlling for …

A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis On The Lived Experiences Of Labor Trafficking Survivors, Paola T. Chavez Reyes Jan 2026

A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis On The Lived Experiences Of Labor Trafficking Survivors, Paola T. Chavez Reyes

Social Work Theses

Across the globe, an estimated 27.6 million people are in forced labor. Despite this widespread prevalence, labor trafficking (LT) in the United States remains difficult to identify and is often overlooked. This study aims to synthesize LT experiences of survivors and providers accounts at the point of recruitment and during victimization to inform identification efforts. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis was conducted using directed content analysis guided by Social Cognition Theory. Peer-reviewed studies documenting LT survivor experiences from 2013-2025 were systematically analyzed to identify the interaction between cognitive processes, environmental influences, and behavioral responses. Across seven studies, the findings reveal that …

What Truly Drives Graduate Earnings?, Aiden Akbarov Jan 2026

What Truly Drives Graduate Earnings?, Aiden Akbarov

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2026

The goal of my project, Predicting the Paycheck: What Factors Truly Influence Graduate Earnings?, was to see if we could actually predict a college graduate's starting salary using data instead of just guessing. I used a dataset of 172 majors from the American Community Survey to look at how a student's field of study, the gender balance of their major, and the current job market all impact their first paycheck. I wanted to create a tool that helps students understand the financial reality of their degree before they even graduate.

To get my results, I used a Multiple Linear Regression …

Empowering Patient Engagement In Effort To Reduce Readmissions, Derinda Hugaboon, Msn, Rn Jan 2026

Empowering Patient Engagement In Effort To Reduce Readmissions, Derinda Hugaboon, Msn, Rn

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Background: Hospital readmissions among Medicare beneficiaries remain a major quality concern and are often associated with social determinants of health (SDOH) and care transition gaps. Targeted discharge interventions that address self‑management needs and follow‑up barriers may reduce avoidable readmissions. Objective: To reduce readmissions by implementing a bundled intervention addressing social determinants of health (SDOH), care‑transition gaps, and inadequate post‑discharge primary care follow‑up. Methods: Medicare Advantage (MA) members aged ≥45 were included. A total of 249 members accounted for 275 overall admissions during the project period; 191 admissions (69.5%) received at least one intervention component (informational discharge packet, face‑to‑face encounter, and/or …

Regional Inequities In Colon Cancer Surgical Care: Treatment Delay Patterns Across U.S. Facilities, Rushabh Hemang Doshi Jan 2026

Regional Inequities In Colon Cancer Surgical Care: Treatment Delay Patterns Across U.S. Facilities, Rushabh Hemang Doshi

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

AbstractBackground/Scientific Premise: Colon cancer represents a significant public health burden in the United States, ranking as the third most common and second deadliest cancer. Timely surgical resection is critical for optimal survival in non-metastatic disease, yet persistent racial, insurance, and geographic disparities in access to care may contribute to treatment delays. While treatment delay has been established as a critical quality metric, regional variation in surgical delays for colon cancer and how patient-level disparities manifest across different U.S. regions remain poorly understood. Understanding these geographic patterns is essential, as healthcare systems, patient populations, access barriers, and state-level policies differ substantially …

Facial Harmony And Gender Congruence: Patient-Reported Outcomes Of Gender-Affirming Facial Surgery Using The Gender-Q And Gpsq, Helia Hosseini Jan 2026

Facial Harmony And Gender Congruence: Patient-Reported Outcomes Of Gender-Affirming Facial Surgery Using The Gender-Q And Gpsq, Helia Hosseini

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background:Gender-affirming facial surgery (GAFS) addresses gender dysphoria by aligning facial features with gender identity, with historical emphasis on refining the upper facial third to render patients more attractive and feminine. The GENDER-Q, a novel patient-reported outcome measure (PROM), evaluates aesthetic, functional, and psychosocial outcomes, complementing the Gender Preoccupation and Stability Questionnaire (GPSQ) to assess effects of GAFS in this study. Methodology: Survey data from 86 patients was analyzed using GENDER-Q and GPSQ scores. Higher GENDER-Q scores indicated improved outcomes, whereas lower GPSQ scores reflected reduced gender dysphoria. Pre- and post-operative outcomes were compared using paired and unpaired t-tests. Spearman’s correlation …

Unseen Labour, Unmatched Impact: Struggles And Strategies Of Supervising Lawyers In Canadian Clinical Law Programs, Sarah Buhler, Gemma Smyth Jan 2026

Unseen Labour, Unmatched Impact: Struggles And Strategies Of Supervising Lawyers In Canadian Clinical Law Programs, Sarah Buhler, Gemma Smyth

Dalhousie Law Journal

Supervision has been described as the “beating heart” and the “core” of clinical legal education. Yet lawyers who supervise law students in clinical programs have challenging and poorly understood roles within Canadian legal education. This article analyzes interviews with lawyers who supervise students in Canadian law-school affiliated legal clinics. Supervising lawyers describe the tensions between their roles as lawyers, supervisors and mentors, university or non-profit employees, social justice advocates, members of law societies, and clinic team members. These tensions often exist within an environment of lower pay, poor job security, substandard treatment by colleagues, and inadequate training. Despite these challenges, …

Chapter 7 - Case Planning, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz Jan 2026

Chapter 7 - Case Planning, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz

Trial Manual for the Defense of Criminal Cases

This chapter is designed to assist counsel in forming a plan of action and implementing it. Every case is unique in its facts and in the series of tasks that must be performed to prepare it for trial. But some generalizations are possible regarding techniques and considerations that can usefully guide counsel’s strategic planning. Section 7.2 describes a process for developing a theory of the case and explains the ways in which counsel can use the defense theory to guide the vital fact-gathering process (§ 7.2.2 infra), the selection and drafting of motions (§ 7.2.3 infra), and the actions that …

Chapter 9 - Defense Investigation, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz Jan 2026

Chapter 9 - Defense Investigation, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz

Trial Manual for the Defense of Criminal Cases

Investigation is counsel’s principal means for obtaining and vetting the information s/he needs. Although there are other fact-gathering tools – formal discovery proceedings (see Chapter 18); motions practice (see Chapter 19); plea-bargaining discussions (see Chapter 15); informal interchanges with a prosecutor (see § 7.2.2 supra) – they tend to be less reliable and comprehensive than independent defense spadework: meticulously searching the streets, paper and electronic files and records, and the internet. One key component of defense investigation, the interview with the client, is discussed in Chapter 6. The following aspects of investigation are discussed in the present chapter: locating and …

Chapter 48 - Sentencing, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz Jan 2026

Chapter 48 - Sentencing, Anthony G. Amsterdam, Randy A. Hertz

Trial Manual for the Defense of Criminal Cases

In most jurisdictions, statutes or court rules authorize – and in some jurisdictions they require – a presentence investigation following conviction of some or all offenders. The investigation is ordered by the judge either on the court’s own initiative or upon application of either party after a verdict or finding of guilt or a plea of guilty. It is performed by an agency of the court, usually the probation department. Probation officers, ordinarily professionally trained in social work, interview the defendant and the defendant’s family, neighbors, employers, teachers, and minister. They collect the defendant’s previous court, juvenile court, prison, school, …

Mental Health And Help-Seeking In Engineering Education: Beliefs, Norms, And Intervention Pathways For Undergraduate Students, Matthew D. Whitwer Jan 2026

Mental Health And Help-Seeking In Engineering Education: Beliefs, Norms, And Intervention Pathways For Undergraduate Students, Matthew D. Whitwer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. While engineering students experience high levels of distress and low rates of mental health treatment seeking (known as a mental health treatment gap), there is a gap in knowledge around how this compares to that of students in other fields of study. Further, while efforts have been made to improve the mental health treatment gap in engineering, they are limited by a lack of actionable, theory-based targets. Therefore, this dissertation aims to characterize …

Visual Genealogies Of Disability In Mexican Visual Culture, Daniela Calvache Garcia Jan 2026

Visual Genealogies Of Disability In Mexican Visual Culture, Daniela Calvache Garcia

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

Disability in Mexico is a visually constructed category, shaped by a long genealogy of representation in which images of bodily difference actively participate in defining power and the management of all bodies. The discursive forces that define disability as unproductivity reduce body-minds to the service of the economic system, affecting our relationship with death, illness, reproduction, size, youth, and beauty. Across the Mesoamerican visual space, such representations have long unsettled dominant systems of truth about bodies. This dissertation examines how conceptions of disability are produced, negotiated, and reimagined through three historical moments and cultural expressions: Pre-Hispanic Mayan imagery, Mexican colonial …

Understanding Knowledge And Perceptions Of The Beef Industry On A Land-Grant University Campus, Allison E. Reaves

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

A well-researched phenomenon in the agricultural industry is the effects of constant innovation coupled with an increasing divide between producer and consumer. This issue has been presented as especially prevalent within animal agriculture and the beef industry, a predominant concern considering Kentucky’s agricultural commodities. This study (n = 31) utilized a mixed-methods approach to understand the knowledge, perceptions, and behavior of beef consumers on a land-grant university campus. Methodologies included Python’s DeepFace emotion recognition, semi-structured interviews, and the JMALI agricultural literacy assessment. Findings revealed participants to be below expected agricultural literacy levels of high school graduates (M=11), with no …

“They Don't Care If I'M Here Or Not”: The Impact Of Exclusionary Discipline On Black Boys In Elementary Schools, Arielle Gulley

DSW Capstone Projects

Disproportionate and exclusionary school discipline practices continue to affect African American boys as early as elementary school, with significant implications for their mental health, academic engagement, and long-term educational trajectories. This capstone project examines how racially biased discipline contributes to disparities in belonging, emotional well-being, and student-teacher relationships, and advances the need to reframe discipline as a site of mental health intervention rather than punishment.

The systematic literature review synthesizes peer-reviewed research to examine the relationship between exclusionary discipline and mental health outcomes among African American boys in elementary settings, with particular attention to patterns emerging in early educational environments. …

Unseen To Unstoppable: Critically Redefining Care For Rural Women With Alcohol Use Disorders, Nicole Gerace Jan 2026

Unseen To Unstoppable: Critically Redefining Care For Rural Women With Alcohol Use Disorders, Nicole Gerace

DSW Capstone Projects

Research reveals that rural women with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are up to 90% less likely to seek treatment than men or urban women. This Doctor of Social Work capstone project brings together a systematic literature review (SLR), a conceptual paper, and a practice application paper to examine the clinical social work practice problem of rural women with AUDs underutilizing treatment. Collectively, these products investigate factors contributing to these disparities, identify gaps in care, and propose more equitable and responsive approaches to treatment for these women. This project began with an SLR (2020–2025) that investigated clinical treatment interventions that demonstrated …

Hugs And Horses: A Pilot Study Of Hold Me Tight Plusⓡ - An Emotionally Focused Workshop With Equine Interactions, Courtney Crouse

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Emotionally Focused Therapy has also been proven to help individuals to feel an improved sense of trust and dyadic adjustment in their relationships (Morgis et al., 2019; Kennedy, 2019). Hold Me TightⓇ (HMT) is an evidence-based workshop designed by Dr. Sue Johnson. Research on HMT has shown that couples significantly improved their relationship satisfaction and the security of their bond (Conradi et al., 2017). Equine-assisted interventions that are paired with therapeutic interventions have been shown to be effective in improving couples’ sense of relationship quality (Willmund et al., 2021). A combination of equine-assisted emotionally focused couples therapy has yet to …
