The Glocal Creation Of Space: Paru Paru’S Youth Casting Their Own Futures, Teresa M. Drenten
The Glocal Creation Of Space: Paru Paru’S Youth Casting Their Own Futures, Teresa M. Drenten
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis illustrates the active participation of Indigenous children in the creation of space intersecting across multiple scales. I engaged with critical decolonial theories to create a community based participatory process with eleven bilingual Quechua-Spanish children in Paru Paru, Peru. My methodology focuses on the desires of the community, concentrating on their lived experiences and honoring the community’s challenges and resiliency. This research and knowledge belong to the community. Through small group and observation methods, these young participants demonstrated two desires; First, they want to remain connected to their lands and cosmology; next, they wish to receive the benefits from …

The Sounds Of Silence; Or, Isabella’S Counter Discourse In Measure For Measure, Gina Vivona
The Sounds Of Silence; Or, Isabella’S Counter Discourse In Measure For Measure, Gina Vivona
Theses and Dissertations
This argument reshapes the thinking about masculine dominance in Measure for Measure, and considers the patriarchy as a series of socially constructed, hence artificial, rules and regulations. It also explores how Isabella’s discourse and celibacy empower her to defy the constraints of early modern paradigms and achieve individual freedom.
Self-Efficacy In Offspring Of Mentally Ill Parents, Craig M. Motsenbocker
Self-Efficacy In Offspring Of Mentally Ill Parents, Craig M. Motsenbocker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subjective experiences of offspring of mentally ill parents have resulted in the development and absence of various components of well-being. However, there are very few studies examining levels of self-efficacy as a component of well-being within offspring of mentally ill parents. Given the evidence of lower levels of resiliency among offspring of mentally ill parents, this study proposed to evaluate the relationship between self-efficacy and offspring of mentally ill parents. Two-hundred and fifty-seven students in an introductory psychology course completed two measures assessing self-efficacy and resiliency. Among the 257 students, 27 identified with a mentally ill parent. It was …

The Writing Path To Healing: An Individual Study On Written Emotional Disclosure, Sarah Foster
The Writing Path To Healing: An Individual Study On Written Emotional Disclosure, Sarah Foster
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The purpose of this project is to provide writing prompts as an intervention method for adolescents who have experienced family violence and have been placed in the safe environment of family-style orphan care. The paper provides a literature review of writing as healing, also known as written emotional disclosure, in therapeutic contexts. Writing prompts are then presented designed for adolescents who have experienced complex trauma in the form of family violence. Each prompt has a specific purpose, but all prompts share a focus on empowering the adolescents to consider their identity, rise above hardships, and engage their past through reflective …
Kentucky Streams And Wetlands, 2009-2017: A Comparative Study, Dennis M. Smith
Kentucky Streams And Wetlands, 2009-2017: A Comparative Study, Dennis M. Smith
Honors Theses
The bulk of Eastern Kentucky University’s 22 county service region provides an ideal landscape within which to observe, study and promote awareness on key, critical issues facing the commonwealth today regarding environmental conservation and restoration, as well as the impacts made upon communities. These issues are not new to Kentuckians and have been studied and concerned citizens state-wide for many years. Owing to her years of work and data collections in the area of stream and wetlands conservation in Kentucky (particularly Eastern Kentucky), Sociologist Dr. Stephanie Mcspirit has provided ideal conditions to explore this issue at the undergraduate level. Through …
Preparing For The Merit-Based Incentive Payment Structure: A Value-Based Business Plan, Ali R. Saheb
Preparing For The Merit-Based Incentive Payment Structure: A Value-Based Business Plan, Ali R. Saheb
Doctoral Projects
The notion of delivering value-based care while maintaining corporate vitality in health care is a multifaceted process. Shaping a business model to reflect this process requires the alignment of quality implications, reimbursement initiatives, a framework that takes into account stipulations on reimbursement for different types of clinicians, and an understanding and preparedness for emerging guidelines and nationally recognized structures for quality indicators. When organizations recognize the need for change, but are not yet prepared to implement it, a comprehensive business plan can help the organization visualize a path to success. In this project, the foundation of requirements for a value-based …

Putting The Athletic Back In The Trainer, Shelby L. Davis
Putting The Athletic Back In The Trainer, Shelby L. Davis
Honors Theses
Athletic Training Students are taught about the benefits of physical activity and how to create specific exercise programs to maintain overall wellness. Although athletic training students have knowledge about the positive effects of physical activity, they continually score lower on activity level scales when compared with the average college student. A rigorous course schedule and long clinical hours seem to be a common factor that play into the poor health habits of the athletic training student. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the variables that negatively affect the exercise habits of undergraduate athletic training students.

Culture, Power And Identity; The Case Of Ang Hien Hoo, Malang, Melani Budianta
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper discusses the intricate relations between culture and identity in a web of larger power structures of politics and the market by looking at the ways in which the Indonesian Chinese attach themselves to a local performing arts tradition. The paper focuses on the history of the wayang orang amateur club called Ang Hien Hoo in Malang, East Java, which emerged from a Chinese diaspora burial association, to attract national limelight in the 1950s and 1960s. In this paper, I see this amateur club as a site, not only for cultural assimilation, but also as a meeting space for …

The Effect Of Dog Interaction Through Therapy Trained Animals Or Harrisonburg-Rockingham Spca Volunteering On High Achieving First Year College Student Adjustment Period, Kamille L. Aiello
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Transitioning to college is a big change. A change that can be life altering for some students, especially when they realize that transitioning to college also means leaving their beloved companion at home. This research study proposes an Animal Assisted Activity intervention for high achieving first year college students through the Honors College as a way to lower their anxiety and increase their happiness as they adjust to their new environment. The research compared an intervention using therapy dogs from the university counseling center to an intervention using SPCA dogs and a control group to see where the largest difference …

Kinship Care: Policy And Practice In The Shenandoah Valley, Anneliese L. Keeler
Kinship Care: Policy And Practice In The Shenandoah Valley, Anneliese L. Keeler
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Kinship care has a long history of being used as a system of care for children whose parents are unable to care for them. However, it’s formal utilization is much newer in the United States and has significant impact on both families, workers, and society in general. My research explored how the Shenandoah Valley has employed kinship care in various counties. The findings of the study were that while children benefit substantially from kinship care, it is largely underfunded and lacks the support that could allow it to make the biggest positive impact on all parties involved.
