Contextual Influences On A Coping Skills Intervention For Adolescents In Substance Use Recovery, Morica Hutchison May 2017

Contextual Influences On A Coping Skills Intervention For Adolescents In Substance Use Recovery, Morica Hutchison

Master's Theses

Co-occurring disorders of substance use and mental health conditions occur in about 75% of adolescents, with depression ranked as the second most common co-occurring disorder, in 20-30% of adolescents (Hersh et al., 2014; Shrier et al., 2003). Contextual factors (i.e. parental substance use and DCF involvement) put adolescents at increased risk of substance use initiation and co-morbid depression (Clark et al., 2005; Walden et al., 2007). Results from the current literature are undetermined on how to best address co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health diagnoses in adolescents. Researchers sought to do this in the current study through a …

Public Service Motivation: Have Financial Incentives Strengthened The Motivation Of Mississippians?, Alexander G. Washington May 2017

Public Service Motivation: Have Financial Incentives Strengthened The Motivation Of Mississippians?, Alexander G. Washington

Theses and Dissertations

In a sector that has traditionally relied on intrinsically motivated employees, research has shown that public employees care more about serving society than reaping personal gains. Recently, the public sector implemented extrinsic rewards available to their workforce. Understanding the impact extrinsic rewards has on individuals employed in the public sector should be studied and interpreted before more personal rewards are offered by public institutions. This study examined the public service motivation (PSM) of faculty at Mississippi State University (MSU) hired between October 1, 2007 – October 1, 2016. Quantitative methods were used to analyze differences in PSM among faculty with …

Transmission Of Religiosity From Parent To Child: Moderation By Perceived Parental Psychopathology, Melanie Stearns May 2017

Transmission Of Religiosity From Parent To Child: Moderation By Perceived Parental Psychopathology, Melanie Stearns

Theses and Dissertations

Parents influence their children’s religiosity through many factors including parenting practices, parental religiosity, and parental psychopathology. Little research, however, has been conducted on how different parental psychopathologies, such as anxiety, depressive, and antisocial problems, affect the transmission of religiosity from parent to child. Participants reported the psychopathological behaviors of their parents via the Adult Behavior Checklist as well as personal and parental religiosity using a new religious scale. Structural equation modeling was used to measure whether parental psychopathology, parent gender, and participant gender would moderate the relationship between perceived parental and emerging adult religiosity. Results indicated that maternal interactions were …

A Systematic Review Of Mexican American Elders With Type-2 Diabetes Under Family Care Of Medication Administration In Borderland, Hsueh-Fen S. Kao, Diana L. Woods, Minzhi Ye, Lin Chen, Maria A. Amaya, Show-Mei Lin May 2017

A Systematic Review Of Mexican American Elders With Type-2 Diabetes Under Family Care Of Medication Administration In Borderland, Hsueh-Fen S. Kao, Diana L. Woods, Minzhi Ye, Lin Chen, Maria A. Amaya, Show-Mei Lin

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

The prevalence of type-2 diabetes (T2DM) among Mexican-American older adults along the U.S.-Mexico border region is at epidemic proportions. Healthcare reform is trending toward long-term home-based management of chronic conditions. Under the Mexican cultural norm of familism, daily care for elders is also often provided by family caregivers whose competence levels may vary. Adherence to the prescribed medication regimen is critical to attainment of optimal glucose control. However, there is a startling lack of literature that addresses the link between family medication administration and care recipients’ health outcome. This paper explores the role of culture in medication administration by family …

Gendered Inhibitors To Successful Military Service And Combat Integration For Female Soldiers, Abigail Thomas May 2017

Gendered Inhibitors To Successful Military Service And Combat Integration For Female Soldiers, Abigail Thomas

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

January 2016 marked the inaugural year of the Pentagon’s historic decision to open ground combat positions up to qualified women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This decision has reinvigorated the debate surrounding the expression of traditional gender roles and whether or not women belong in this male-dominated environment. This study examines the recent history of gendered military service, including publication of misleading rhetoric, both within the military and in larger society, surrounding the capabilities of women in combat, unequal demotion and exclusion of service members, and the biased treatment of trauma. Utilizing military research and case studies, this analysis …

Case Study: Healthy Texas Women Program In The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District, Saul Francisco Delgado

School of Social Work

The public healthcare system faces continuous transformations and challenges of constant adjustments to the increasing usage of fee for service revenue and the decrease of federal investment to women’s healthcare services and to the safety net healthcare providers (Meit, 2013; Weisman, 1997).

In 2016, the Texas 84th Legislation Session determined to consolidate two existing women’s healthcare service programs into one a single program: the Healthy Texas Women (HTW) program. The new women’s program is a preventative care program that provides services of family planning and chronic illness care under a complete fee for service reambursement system as its sourse …

Substance Use Disorder Training Workshop For Future Interprofessional Health Care Providers, Kristina Monteiro, Luba Dumenco, Sally Collins, Jeffrey Bratberg, Celia Macdonnell, Anita Jacobson, Richard Dollase, Paul George

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Introduction: Rates of substance use disorders, including opioid misuse, continue to rise despite national initiatives. Because of this, health professional schools from Rhode Island joined together to design and implement a single-day interprofessional education workshop on substance use disorder training. Methods: This workshop consists of four sessions. The first is a patient panel featuring both patients recovering from substance use disorders and their health care providers. Next is a naloxone administration training session. This is followed by a standardized patient session featuring an individual who requires nonopioid options for chronic pain treatment and in which health professional students work together …

Barriers To Healthcare In The Hispanic Population Of Dekalb County: A Healthcare Provider Perspective, Brittany L. Rios May 2017

Barriers To Healthcare In The Hispanic Population Of Dekalb County: A Healthcare Provider Perspective, Brittany L. Rios

Honors Capstones

Numerous qualitative studies have identified a variety of barriers faced by Hispanic patients when accessing healthcare, but there has been minimal research completed on healthcare providers’ perspectives of these barriers. The present study was created to investigate current healthcare providers’ perspectives to gain new insight into the factors influencing accessibility of care. In this qualitative study, five healthcare providers were selected as participants through snowball sampling techniques. Data collection occurred through face-to-face interviews, and, with utilization of the Glaser and Strauss constant comparison method of data analysis, four major categories emerged. Findings showed that the barriers identified by healthcare providers …

Bound To A Brothel: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Institutional And Non-Institutional Anti-Trafficking Training Curriculum And Awareness-Raising Material, Kaylen Runyan May 2017

Bound To A Brothel: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Institutional And Non-Institutional Anti-Trafficking Training Curriculum And Awareness-Raising Material, Kaylen Runyan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores various facets of human trafficking ranging from signs of victims to recruitment methods of traffickers, focusing specifically on the inherent connection of complex trauma as an effect of experiencing exploitation. Trauma serves as the overarching theme throughout this paper as I analyze anti-trafficking institutional organizations and their training curricula as well as non-institutional organizations and their awareness-raising material. The questions I focus on are: How do institutional texts and training curriculum prepare individuals to interact with victims of trauma? And how do non-institutional awareness-raising materials educate audiences who do not work directly with victims of trafficking on …

Engaging Learners Through Self-Guided Tutorials: Implementing And Assessing A Flipped Classroom Model For Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Castello, Alex Pfundt May 2017

Engaging Learners Through Self-Guided Tutorials: Implementing And Assessing A Flipped Classroom Model For Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Castello, Alex Pfundt

Library Staff Research and Scholarship

With the help of a Curricular Development Seed Grant, funded by the Mellon Foundation, librarians from Bryn Mawr College’s Library & Information Technology Services redesigned our model for one-shot information literacy instruction. We created self-guided, interactive online tutorials that allowed us to flip traditional demonstrations of skills, such as searching the library catalog, requesting books and articles, and finding empirical research. As a result, we were able to revise our in-class lesson plans to focus on active learning activities. We also conducted a research study in three academic courses to assess the efficacy of our flipped classroom model. This paper …

Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey Iii May 2017

Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey Iii

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Argument education can play an important role in higher education for leadership development and responding to increasing calls for post-secondary accountability. But to do so, argumentation teachers, scholars, and practitioners need to develop a clearer definition and research agenda for the purposes of teaching and assessing argumentation. The research conducted here contributes to this project by first establishing a definitional construct and observable behaviors associated with learning and practicing argumentation. Second, an argument education assessment instrument was created based off of the literature-supported definition of argumentation. Third, debate and argument education subject matter experts reviewed the definition, behaviors, and assessment …

Joining Hands: Constructing Childhood Agency In The Context Of Ageism, Brittnay Churchill May 2017

Joining Hands: Constructing Childhood Agency In The Context Of Ageism, Brittnay Churchill

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Childhood scholars argue that children’s perspectives are systematically underestimated and silenced (James & James, 2004). Sociocultural constructions of children as fragile beings in need of protection cause youth to have few opportunities to exercise their own agency. In Change 4 Good, a youth Participatory Action Research (yPAR) program, dominant narratives regarding the capabilities of young people were challenged. The purpose of the program was to create an empowering setting where youth and adults partnered to make change, as opposed to hierarchical mentorships. The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze relationships between adults and young people within this program. …

A Novel Approach: Fictional Prose As Imagined Contact For Counselors-In-Training Working With Cultural Others, Bryant Logan Satterlee May 2017

A Novel Approach: Fictional Prose As Imagined Contact For Counselors-In-Training Working With Cultural Others, Bryant Logan Satterlee

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Meeting with clients for the first time provokes anxiety in many counselors-in-training, which can be exacerbated when working with clients from differing cultural backgrounds. This heightened anxiety can limit the capacity of beginning counselors to empathize with cultural others, which decreases the chance of powerful, therapeutic relationships being established. In addition, many counseling programs offer limited multicultural experiences that might actually prompt intergroup anxiety. It is suggested within this article that fictional prose be used as an additional resource in the classroom that acts as an imagined contact experience to aid in the cultivation of cultural empathy while potentially assuaging …

Justice-Involved Women And Redemptive Narratives: The Role Of Personal Resources And Environmental Factors On The Desistance Process, Elizabeth K. Allen May 2017

Justice-Involved Women And Redemptive Narratives: The Role Of Personal Resources And Environmental Factors On The Desistance Process, Elizabeth K. Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

The rate of incarceration in the United States is six to ten times higher than in countries with similar living standards. There are currently more than seven million Americans who are justice-involved. Women are the fastest growing sector, with more than one million women currently under some form of correctional supervision. Community reintegration after incarceration is challenging and the needs of women are specific and distinct, differing in intensity and multiplicity from men. Frequently, women’s histories include poverty, abuse, and involvement with mental health and child service agencies which have profound implications for incarceration and reintegration. Therefore, all levels of …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Beliefs, Behaviors, And Experiences Of Advanced Practice Nurses With Lesbian And Gay Patients, Marianne Snyder May 2017

A Mixed Methods Study Of Beliefs, Behaviors, And Experiences Of Advanced Practice Nurses With Lesbian And Gay Patients, Marianne Snyder

Doctoral Dissertations

APRNs are increasingly providing more of the primary care services to diverse populations in the United States. The population includes persons of non-heterosexual identities who often encounter barriers when seeking health care. Given the minuscule focus in nursing education about these patient populations, a clearer understanding of APRNs’ beliefs, behaviors, and experiences caring for lesbian and gay patients was essential.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore and identify the beliefs, behaviors, and experiences of APRNs with lesbian and gay and patients. Social constructionism was the theoretical perspective that guided this study, and the philosophical perspective of …

Current Criminal Justice System Policy Reform Movements: The Problem Of Unintended Consequences, Robert D. Crutchfield May 2017

Current Criminal Justice System Policy Reform Movements: The Problem Of Unintended Consequences, Robert D. Crutchfield

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

The history of criminal justice reform in the United States has numerous examples of both good and negative consequences. Frequently the latter have been unintended and unexpected. In this article, I point to several potential unintended consequences of the current, bipartisan push for criminal justice reform and how they may be exacerbated by the failure of policy makers to heed the knowledge of both academic criminologists and criminal justice system practitioners. Criminal justice reform can minimize the possibility of unintended negative consequences by using this knowledge and by following time honored principles of justice.
