Exploring Kinesthethic Empathy In The Medical Setting: A Heuristic Inquiry, Jenna Maltby
Exploring Kinesthethic Empathy In The Medical Setting: A Heuristic Inquiry, Jenna Maltby
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
The purpose of this heuristic inquiry was to understand how I used kinesthetic empathy while working with children hospitalized on the general pediatric unit and pediatric intensive care unit. I was also interested in exploring whether aspects of kinesthetic empathy might be useful for child life specialists in relationship building. Data were collected using journal entries that depicted my use of kinesthetic empathy after 15 individual dance/movement therapy sessions. The data were analyzed using Forinash’s qualitative data analysis approach. The findings demonstrated that I engaged in kinesthetic empathy by being present, self-referencing, embodying, and using touch. The findings were shared …

When The Clinician Is Burdened: Clinician’S Trauma History, Resiliency And The Impact On Compassion Fatigue, Ashley Martin-Cuellar
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This dissertation study was motivated by the desire to understand the relationship between a clinician’s prior traumatic experiences and the degree to which trauma may alter the personal impact of their work with clients in the form of perceived compassion fatigue. The methodology used in this study was designed to gather information about the relationship between 1) a clinician’s trauma and current levels of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction, and 2) the relationships between a clinician’s trauma and compassion fatigue when moderated by mindfulness, subjective vitality, psychological well-being and sleep. Regression results indicated that mindfulness, subjective vitality and psychological well-being …
Therapy Dogs And The Impact On Employees In The Pediatric Medical Setting, Laine Foith
Therapy Dogs And The Impact On Employees In The Pediatric Medical Setting, Laine Foith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
More than 40% of nurses reported experiencing significant burnout. Burnout is characterized by disengagement, cynicism, negative views of personal accomplishment and ability, and emotional exhaustion. The healthcare providers that experience burnout can possibly expect a decrease in ability to recognize/report errors, increase of negative feelings toward the patient, and decrease levels of patient satisfaction (Ernest, 2014). One of the ways Schub (2015) suggested to regulate burnout for employees was to provide psychosocial support to colleagues to reduce stress. This study is one of the first attempts to bridge the gap between the unknown correlation between qualitative and quantitative benefits of …
A Systems Approach To Revenue Fluctuation In Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, Joshua James Hunter
A Systems Approach To Revenue Fluctuation In Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, Joshua James Hunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nonprofit Human Services Organizations (NPO) are normally considered to do all they can to work toward providing clients with optimal services (Bowman, 2011). What has not been considered is the possibility that NPOs sometimes allocate more revenue toward accumulating profit than toward generating services. This study used IRS 990 Forms of 150 private nonprofits from 2009 to 2010 to investigate whether NPOs did this at the peak of the recent recession, a time when there was a strong need for NPOs to increase their level of services. Results showed revenue increased 56%, services increased 1.4%, profit increased 43%, operating margin …
The Relationship Between Hospitalizations And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In Patients With Cystic Fibrosis, Ronni T. Barker
The Relationship Between Hospitalizations And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In Patients With Cystic Fibrosis, Ronni T. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2015, the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation collaborated with the European CF Society to develop new guidelines to screen for depression and anxiety in people with CF. The guidelines were based on a study that assessed over 6,000 patients and 4,000 caregivers among 45 centers in the United States and eight European countries. Research has proven that depression and anxiety have a negative impact on CF and overall health. 186 adolescents within the CF clinic at Children’s Health Center voluntarily completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). These screenings were completed between February 2016-March 2017 and …
The Relationship Of Locus Of Control And Social Learning On Academic Achievement In A Supplemental Instruction Program, Tina Fleet
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
A large number of high school students entering college are arriving academically unprepared. Abilene Christian University’s newly founded Bridge Scholars Program seeks to help and support academically at-risk students based upon low ACT/SAT scores and low high school GPA averages. This research utilizes the Supplemental Instruction program, (based upon Bandura’s social learning theory), as its academic intervention. The research questions are 1) How does Supplemental Instruction contribute to an at-risk student’s college readiness (knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors and strategies)? And, 2) Does a student’s internal or external locus of control predict academic performance? A pretest and posttest using Rotter’s …

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
Administering a successful and sustainable information literacy program depends upon dialog between librarians and disciplinary faculty as key stakeholders. Two academic institutions surveyed their faculties on the importance of information literacy for student success, the applicability of the ACRL Framework, and attitudes toward collaborating with librarians. This session will present quantitative and qualitative data and discuss how the institutions will use it to align instruction with the expressed values of faculty to help strategically guide integration of the Framework into programs and leverage strengths in an environment of constricting budgets and staffing.
The presentation will examine survey responses, reviewing similarities …

Substance Abuse Recovery Through The Eyes Of The Therapist, Taylor Wardle
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Recognizing the attitudes and activities of therapists working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients is necessary in order to address any gaps in training. Twenty-nine therapists were recruited from all over the United States to take part in an online survey asking about their attitudes towards addiction, Deaf people, and training. The hearing status of the 29 participants were self-identified as Hearing (n=16), Deaf (n=10), and Hard of Hearing (n=3). Of the 29 therapists, 11 had training specific towards substance abuse, Hearing (n=4), Deaf (n= 6), and Hard of Hearing (n= 1). These 29 therapists were presented with three …

Research Proposal: Assessing The Effectiveness Of The "Business On Board" Program, Eugéne Louis De Klerk, Phd, Eileen Cunniffe, Joseph Sweeney, Edd, Larry M. Starr, Phd
School of Continuing and Professional Studies Student Papers
Board performance is widely recognized as a critical ingredient in a non-profit organization’s ability to achieve impact and to meet its mission and goals. The problem for many organizations, particularly those operating in the arts and culture environment, is that it can take new board members several months and often longer before they begin to function effectively in their governance role. To speed up the learning curve, BOB provides advance training to prepare new board members to hit the ground running so that they will be able to participate in their initial meetings with confidence. BOB also provides training for …

Just Like Starting Over: Using Alma And Primo To Create A Successful Course Reserves Service, Molly Gunderson
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
The Portland State University Library has a heavily-used course reserve service, for both print and electronic materials. When we migrated to ExLibris in 2014, we decided to move from Docutek ERes to Alma. We took the opportunity to rethink our course reserve service and changed everything from loan periods to work flows. We also harnessed Primo to make our course reserve materials more discoverable and incorporated course reserves materials in the course shells of our learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L).
In this presentation I will offer best practices and discuss the challenges we faced in moving to a new platform …

Failures Of Us Foreign Aid: Jordan And Its Unique History Of Refugee Absorption, Cilia J. Jurdy
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
The United States began giving aid to Jordan as a geopolitical strategy in 1951 to assists with Jordan’s absorption of Palestinian refugees after the creation of Israel in 1948. Since 1951, the United States has given nearly $15.833 billion in support. Foreign aid to Jordan began, and has been perpetuated, in order to keep the country economically stable. Jordan’s total population is 55–57% refugees. Most of these refugees require financial, health, and housing assistance, and they suffer from untreated mental health conditions. US foreign aid policy needs to have programming to treat the mental health trauma that refugees experience. Research …
For The Love Of Land And People: An Evaluation Of The Food Project As An Empowering Youth Development Program, Emily Walls
For The Love Of Land And People: An Evaluation Of The Food Project As An Empowering Youth Development Program, Emily Walls
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
For the Love of Land and People uses youth experiences to examine The Food Project, a youth development and urban agriculture organization from the Greater Boston area. Both youth experience and program structures are viewed through the framework of Critical Youth Empowerment in order to analyze how youth experience empowerment and personal growth in The Food Project's youth programs. This study finds that The Food Project youth programs demonstrate effective empowerment because they successfully create safe spaces, engage youth in work that is meaningful to them, and give youth the confidence and skills to effect change in their world.
Recommendations To Recruit And Retain Older Adults In Southern Maine, Hannah Ruhl
Recommendations To Recruit And Retain Older Adults In Southern Maine, Hannah Ruhl
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
In retirement, older adults often decide to devote their time and skills to the needs of others. Much is known about who older volunteers are demographically, and what they can gain from the experience. At the same time many organizations who rely on volunteers, especially smaller ones with fewer resources, fail to attract committed older adult volunteers. This capstone presents insights found in the literature and collected from interviews with local volunteer managers, and offers a list of recommendations synthesized from those sources. The list of recommended strategies can be used by organizations to increase the number of older volunteers …

Taking What We Have And Making What We Need: Utilizing Natural Helping Support Networks To Decrease Self Directed Violence Among Adolescents Of Color., Ladrea Ingram, Vanessa Drew-Branch
Journal of Family Strengths
Previous research has linked family and community connectedness with decreased risk of self-directed violence among adolescents. Despite the strong correlation between social connectedness and lowered risk of self-directed violence, very few interventions use social connections as mediators. This article identifies the risk and protective factors associated with self-directed violence among adolescents of color. In alignment with Healthy People 2020, this paper highlights the social determinants of self-directed violence including factors associated with individual’s social and physical environments. The authors provide an interdisciplinary review of current trends and historical data on self-directed violence in adolescents of color. The researchers suggest, the …
