Urban Extension: Aligning With The Needs Of Urban Audiences Through Subject-Matter Centers, Brad Gaolach, Michael Kern, Christina Sanders
Urban Extension: Aligning With The Needs Of Urban Audiences Through Subject-Matter Centers, Brad Gaolach, Michael Kern, Christina Sanders
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
The educational program model is the principle approach Extension uses to deliver on its mission of “taking knowledge to the people.” However, with county-based faculty fully engaged in long-term program delivery, they may have little or no capacity to address emerging issues faced by urban communities. Urban governments often seek the research capacity of a university in addition to, or instead of, the traditional Extension programming model but sometimes turn first to other urban-serving universities. Washington State University Extension has addressed these challenges by establishing subject-matter centers. This article examines how subject-matter centers can add capacity to traditional Extension offices …

America’S Changing Urban Landscape: Positioning Extension For Success, Marie A. Ruemenapp
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
For the Cooperative Extension Service (Extension) to have a substantive urban presence and impact, it will be vital for local Extension staff, state Extension systems, and the national Extension system to understand how to position Extension for success in large metropolitan regions. To do this, Extension should examine its history of working in cities, work to overcome a number of internal barriers or challenges that are defined in Extension literature, and develop a deeper understanding of the unique and complex set of characteristics and features of urban environments. As Extension does this, it will be important for it to move …

Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent
Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Female Genital Circumcision (FGC) is a cultural practice by which female genitalia are cut for non-medical purposes. Although the Western world has seen the number of circumcised youth rise, very few studies have been conducted in developed countries. Even fewer are studies on minority groups regarding female circumcision; none explicitly involve deaf people. For this study, 76 deaf or hard of hearing individuals living in the U.S., whose primary means of communication was English or American Sign Language, completed a survey about FGC before and after viewing videos. One video showed an African woman who had experienced FGC, and the …

Alone In A Crowd: Perceived Social Relationships And Health Outcomes For Clergy, Christopher G. Ford
Psychology ETDs
The purpose of this study was to understand more about the relative contributions of different measures of social relationships to mental and physical health. This was done through secondary analysis of a clergy health intervention (n = 616), a population with unique professional and personal relationship characteristics. Hierarchal multiple regression was used in three steps to control for demographics, measures of perceived social relationships (e.g., social support, social engagement, social isolation, and relationship satisfaction), and whether or not clergy worked alone or with clergy colleagues. The results demonstrated that the relationship variables entered together, after controlling for demographics, were particularly …
Tattoos And Criminal Behavior: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Body Art And Crime, Daniel D. Dajani
Tattoos And Criminal Behavior: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Body Art And Crime, Daniel D. Dajani
Student Theses
This thesis investigates the relationship between having tattoos and crime. A review of past research concerning tattoos, crime and other forms of deviancy demonstrates that a relationship exists to some extent. This thesis gathers new data concerning tattoos and crime and adds to the knowledge base by examining the alterations in the correlation and what may be causing said alterations. This thesis utilized the survey method and participants were recruited via a mix of in-person and online strategies. We aimed to garner participation from a varied group of respondents that would ensure data relevant to the study would be produced …

Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang
Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang
Civil Engineering ETDs
Roadway pavement surface distress information is essential for effective pavement asset management, and subsequently, transportation agencies at all levels dedicate a large amount of time and money to routinely collect data on pavement surface distress conditions as the core of their asset management programs. These data are used by these agencies to make maintenance and repair decisions. Current methods for pavement surface distress evaluation are time-consuming and expensive. Geospatial technologies provide new methods for evaluating pavement surface distress condition that can supplement or substitute for currently-adopted evaluation methods. However, few previous studies have explored the utility of geospatial technologies for …
How Japan’S Cultural Norms Affect Policing: A Side-By-Side Comparison With The United States, Katrina Tran
How Japan’S Cultural Norms Affect Policing: A Side-By-Side Comparison With The United States, Katrina Tran
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The ways of policing have been critiqued throughout the years—some have advocated for a direct approach while others value diplomatic techniques. Consideration is emphasized by how culture affects policing in the United States and Japan. In the United States, the customs of policing involve violence, individualism, pragmatism, social mobility, and low power distance, whereas Japan encourages non-violence, face-saving, conservatism, and high power distance. The difference in these cultural norms reflects how policing is conducted in these two countries. To understand how policing in these two countries are different, this paper examines the difference of cultural norms and its impact on …

Not Just Floundering Around: A Post-Regulatory Framework To Address Seafood Substitution, Sage Friedman
Not Just Floundering Around: A Post-Regulatory Framework To Address Seafood Substitution, Sage Friedman
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Seafood substitution, the intentional or negligent mislabeling of fish and seafood, is estimated to cost American consumers over $25 billion per year. According to some studies, more than a third of the five billion pounds of seafood consumed in the United States is mislabeled when sold. Despite being virtually omnipresent throughout every level the US food supply chain, seafood substitution is rarely prosecuted due to a woeful mismatch between the scale of the problem and the resources dedicated to enforcement. This comment explores the pervasiveness of the fish fraud problem and the inadequacies of the current response before developing a …

Nobility V. Nation: Conflicting Justices In The Early French Revolution Trials Of Lambesc, Besenval, And Favras (1789-1790), Michael Arin
Senior Theses
Despite the wealth of information on the French Revolution, the courts of law remain an understudied subject matter, in particular the inconsistent application of criminal law in pursuit of suspects of lèse-nation by the Comité des recherches and Châtelet. This study bridges this gap using archival research of court documents and a holistic approach to historians of the time, of the crime, and of the cases in question. Considering the totality of the circumstances, the trials of the prince de Lambesc, baron de Besenval, and marquis de Favras paint a battleground of a multitude of conflicting justices—social, political, and judicial—resulting …
Mobilization And Repression In The Occupy Movement, Eric Turner
Mobilization And Repression In The Occupy Movement, Eric Turner
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation project focuses on dynamics of mobilization and repression in the Occupy movement. This movement emerged in late 2011 in the United States and sought to protest the growing economic inequality and the growing influence of corporations in politics. This project focuses on Occupy chapters which emerged in 74 out of the 100 largest cities in the United States. The first empirical chapter of this project focuses on dynamics which affect differences in protest size, measured in terms of protest turnouts relative to population. This chapter first demonstrates the importance of large student populations and greater numbers of universities …
