A Comparative Program Analysis Of The Safe And Successful Youth Initiative In The Massachusetts’ Gateway Cities Of Brockton And New Bedford, Adam J. Costa
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the summer of 2016, I participated in an internship with the Massachusetts Department of Correction Program & Reentry Services Division. I worked with state policy analysts to research and implement new reentry program initiatives in state facilities. The responsibility of these state employees was to identify key areas of research and evaluate program effectiveness through statistical analysis. I learned it was possible to compare and contrast public programs through comparative analytical study. The purpose of this honors thesis is to research violence reduction programs under the Safe and Successful Youth Initiative (SSYI) in Massachusetts’ Gateway Cities. This paper will …

A Comparative Approach To Counter-Terrorism Legislation And Legal Policy, Paul David Hill Jr
A Comparative Approach To Counter-Terrorism Legislation And Legal Policy, Paul David Hill Jr
Senior Honors Theses
Since the 9/11 attacks, American legislation and legal policy in regards to classifying and processing captured terrorists has fallen short of being fully effective and lawful. Trial and error by the Bush and Obama administrations has uncovered two key lessons: (1) captured terrorists are not typical prisoners of war and thus their detainment must involve more legal scrutiny than the latter; and (2) captured terrorists are not ordinary criminals and thus the civilian criminal court system, due to constitutional constraints, is not capable of adequately trying every count of terrorism. Other nations, including France and Israel, approach this problem with …

The Dream Act: A Retrospective On Immigration Policies Across Time And Nations, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
The United States has a long tradition of assimilating diverse peoples into a shared culture and thus developing a transformative, holistic national identity. Despite this historical affinity for immigration, there have also been points during which rose issues with migrants entering the country illegally. Once this happens, politicians must decide how to deal with an influx of undocumented aliens. This paper focuses on amnesty acts, particularly ones past through the American Congress in the past century. The relationship between amnesty legislation and immigration flow will be investigated. Also, an exploration of European policies towards immigration will all be conducted in …

Vulnerability Of Caribbean Island-Nations To Future Climate Change, Julia A. Dileo
Vulnerability Of Caribbean Island-Nations To Future Climate Change, Julia A. Dileo
Open Access Theses
The Caribbean is predicted to be one of the most impacted regions by climate change. However, the impacts of climate change will not be uniformly felt across the region due to the inherent geographic properties and unique socioeconomic characteristics that define each nation individually. This thesis has two goals. First, the vulnerability of thirteen island-nations in the Caribbean to future climate change is estimated by combining indicators of green infrastructure, socioeconomic infrastructure, and future climate change risks. Second, the contribution of five explanatory variables (GDP per capita, population density, land area size, political stability, and years of independence) to the …

Can President Trump 'Open Up' The Libel Laws?, John M. Greabe
Can President Trump 'Open Up' The Libel Laws?, John M. Greabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] "Libel and slander are branches of the law of defamation. Defamation law authorizes remedies for reputational harm caused by some false statements of fact. A libel is a defamatory statement that is printed or written; a slander is a defamatory statement that is spoken.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump suggested that, if elected, he would "open up our libel laws" to facilitate lawsuits by public officials against news organizations."
The Fourth Wave Of Democratization: A Comparative Analysis Of Tunisia And Egypt, Ariel M. Dunay
The Fourth Wave Of Democratization: A Comparative Analysis Of Tunisia And Egypt, Ariel M. Dunay
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
In the years following the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, Tunisia and Egypt began the process of creating a new government and constitution made by the people and for the people. However, their differing democratic outcomes begs the question of what factors led Tunisia to become a democracy and Egypt to remain stagnant. This thesis analyzes the democratic transition process through a side-by-side comparison of Tunisia and Egypt in the years since the Arab Spring. It will explore the thin lines between the military, economy, and social movements that all affect the state-building process. It will argue that Tunisia has achieved …

I would like to thank my committee for assisting me with this project in whatever way they could. Dr. Cohen, Dr. Lubert, and Dr. Gelfand were extremely generous with their expertise and time, always sending helpful comments and insights. I would like to especially thank Dr. Cohen for being my chair and guiding me through every step of this project. This was no small task and I certainly could not have done it on my own.

Effectiveness Of The Mandt System Aggression Management Training In An Inpatient Behavioral Health Program, Yolanda Mcdade
Effectiveness Of The Mandt System Aggression Management Training In An Inpatient Behavioral Health Program, Yolanda Mcdade
Theses and Dissertations
Research is lacking on the efficacy of aggression management training programs based on clinical outcomes. This study examined the efficacy of an aggression management training on managing aggression and violent behavior at East Mississippi State Hospital (EMSH), an inpatient behavioral health program. This training, The Mandt System, replaced a previous training, Techniques for the Management of Aggressive Behavior (TMAB), which was considered to be non-replicable outside state facilities in Mississippi. This study should not be seen as a comparative study between The Mandt System and TMAB, but rather as an investigation into the effects of implementing The Mandt System as …

The Community 911 System: Sources Of Strain And Relief, Elizabeth Zulauf
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This thesis will identify best practices from other localities around the country and propose a set of possible solutions for Harrisonburg EMS. Because non-emergency 911 calls use resources, finances, equipment and time that contribute to the burden that the emergency system faces, communities have adopted programs that aim to ease this burden by limiting the amount of ambulance responses to calls that turn out to be non-emergency. It is not only in Harrisonburg, but across the country that “providers are overwhelmed with evaluation, treatment and transportation of patients who have minor medical conditions but who have nowhere else to turn …

The Effects Of New Public Management On Public Servant Job Satisfaction, Adam Ferreira
The Effects Of New Public Management On Public Servant Job Satisfaction, Adam Ferreira
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The public sector is often lauded for its egalitarian principles and penchant for mutual cooperation, but competition is increasingly becoming the norm which may affect communication, efficiency, goals, and objectives. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects that competition and private sector practices have on public servants. A survey was sent to 700 employees of municipal governments in Massachusetts; 45 respondents completed the survey over the course of two weeks. The principle lesson learned from this research was that while public servants view competitive practices negatively, and nearly half of respondents viewed their performance evaluations negatively, neither …

Constituency Size And The Percentage Of Women In State Legistlature, Jennifer S. Sienko
Honors Capstones
Women are constantly being underrepresented in the American political system. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of women in state legislature and why constituency size might matter in order for them to be elected. The scope is how constituency size affects the amount of women being elected to state legislature. Do states with smaller constituency have more female legislature? The limits are that women believe that they are not qualified enough to run for office. When women run, they are just as likely as men to win, but they are not even putting themselves in the …

The Anchorage, Alaska Municipal Pretrial Diversion Program: An Initial Assessment, Cory R. Lepage, Jeff D. May
The Anchorage, Alaska Municipal Pretrial Diversion Program: An Initial Assessment, Cory R. Lepage, Jeff D. May
Alaska Law Review
Pretrial diversion programs have the potential to prevent future criminal behavior through intervention and community based services. This may be particularly true for specific populations of offenders such as those with mental illness, substance abuse disorder, and those with co-occuring disorders. Pretrial diversion programs take low-level offenders out of the jail population, both reducing system overpopulation and costs of incarceration. The programs also provide speedy case processing for minor crimes resulting in savings to the court system and personnel. Pretrial diversion can help an offender avoid a criminal conviction and potentially avoid future criminal violations. Results indicate that most Anchorage …

#Zika #Olympics: The Use Of Dialogue In Tweets Regarding The Zika Virus And The 2016 Rio Olympics, Daniel W. Vieth
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Previous research has observed the use of social media by health organizations; however, few studies have addressed how health organizations use these media to build relationships with publics. This thesis addresses this gap by applying Kent and Taylor’s (2002) dialogic tenets to Twitter messages regarding the 2015-2016 Zika virus epidemic and the 2016 Rio Olympics. First a pilot study used a quantitative survey to find that individuals were using online media to seek information about Zika, and that the public generally had high threat salience toward the virus. Next, social network analyzer Netlytic was used to collect Tweets that mentioned …
The Effects Of Caffeine Ingestion On The Hemostatic Response To Simulated Firefighting Activities, Sierra D. Wassell
The Effects Of Caffeine Ingestion On The Hemostatic Response To Simulated Firefighting Activities, Sierra D. Wassell
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Sudden cardiac events are the leading cause of death among firefighters, and it is acknowledged that most ischemic events are due to an occlusive thrombus formation. In addition, due to the demanding job requirements and shift work, firefighters commonly overuse caffeine. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effects of caffeine on the hemostatic response to simulated firefighting activity. Twelve healthy male firefighters (age, 31.3 ± 5.4 yrs; weight, 94.2 ± 13.1 kg; BMI, 28.7 ± 2.9 kg·m-2) participated in this study, wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Subjects completed …

Effects Of Executive Function Skills Instruction On Classroom Behavior, Michelle Whitham
Effects Of Executive Function Skills Instruction On Classroom Behavior, Michelle Whitham
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
Executive functions, a set of interrelated processes that facilitate organization and self control, impact many aspects of academic and social success. This study investigates the benefits of executive function skills instruction on classroom behavior. Factor analyses reveal executive function orients around three distinct but interrelated factors: inhibition, working memory, and flexibility. Using a spiraling curriculum eight fourth and fifth grade students from a suburban Title 1 elementary school were directly taught these skills over ten 30 minute sessions. Using a pre/post survey of behavior indicative of executive function, both students and teachers expressed mixed results suggesting some impact of the …

Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Theses
This research examines how well New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative aligns with four theoretical domains: subculture of violence, deterrence, rational choice/situational crime prevention, and implementation theories. It reviews how procedural justice and community integration align with these theories and the evidence-based strategies that GIVE sites implement. Sites are grouped for analysis, and their characteristics are described. The literature review describes each theoretical domain’s core principles as they pertain to GIVE. It shows that the theories can be compatible and that their integration is difficult but would likely make the initiative more effective. The primary research questions …
