Examining Cervical Cancer Screening Utilization Among African Immigrant Women: A Literature Review, Adebola Adegboyega, Mollie Aleshire, Ana Maria Linares Feb 2017

Examining Cervical Cancer Screening Utilization Among African Immigrant Women: A Literature Review, Adebola Adegboyega, Mollie Aleshire, Ana Maria Linares

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Background: Globally, 530,000 women per year are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and approximately 275,000 die from the disease. Routine cervical cancer screening may reduce the burden of cervical cancer morbidity and mortality through early detection and improved treatment outcome. Immigrant women in the United States (U.S.) may be disproportionately affected by cervical cancer; however, there is scarce literature addressing cervical cancer screening in African immigrants (AIs) when compared to other immigrant groups. This systematic review evaluates the state of cervical cancer screening research in AIs and identifies current gaps.

Materials and methods: Through a comprehensive literature search, we identified 16 …

Building Middle-Earth: An Exploration Into The Uses Of Architecture In The Works Of J. R. R. Tolkien, Johanna H. Brooke

Journal of Tolkien Research

Many aspects of Tolkien's Middle-earth have been the attention of scholarly interest since the boom of 'Tolkien studies' but an area that seems to be lacking in criticism, but is certainly full of detail and character in Tolkien's books, is architecture. This essay explores how important the creation of buildings and living spaces in Middle-earth is to the underlying messages of the tale and how the architecture of Middle-earth impacts the reader's journey.

This essay starts as we the reader does - in a hole - and explores the way that architecture is used to help explain hobbits, show their …

Publications and Research

Although English is spoken around the world and is considered the main means of communication in commerce, science, and many other fields, the language has humble origins and a complicated story.

With roots in the southern part of England, drawing from French, German, and Scandinavian languages, English began to spread around the world as the British began colonizing. First it was Wales, then Scotland, Ireland, Australia, the United States, South Africa, India, and elsewhere around the globe.

The Function Of Psychology In Social Governance, Yang Yufang, Guo Yongyu Feb 2017

The Function Of Psychology In Social Governance, Yang Yufang, Guo Yongyu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

A general purpose of deepening its all-round reform is to advance modernization in the state governance system and governance capability. We argue that psychological research can provide important support for this program. On the one hand, owning to its nature of social science, psychology may reveal the mechanisms of many social processes and social issues. On the other hand, the ideas that social governance advocates, including multiple subjects, deliberative democracy, coordinating contradiction and fine governance, are all closely related to psychology and require deeply understanding of people's mind and behavior. Future study should concern about following topics, including intensifying explorations …

Ideal Balance Versus Realistic Ladder: Social Stratification And Fairness Researches Based On Psychological Perspectives, Guo Yongyu, Yang Shenlong, Hu Xiaoyong

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Social fairness is one of human's long pursuit, as well as core values of social governance in contemporary China. Severe class differentiation and class solidification in Chinese society, however, have been a main constraint on social fairness. Therefore, focusing on social objective status quo, people's subjective feeling, and interventional strategies, social class psychology explores the below issues, including the mental mechanism on which social stratification hinders social fairness, different social classes' psychological characteristics of perception of social stratification and social fairness, and how to promote social mobility and social fairness. The future social stratification and social fairness researches based on …

Post/Feminist Impulses: Neoliberal Ideology And Class Politics In Annie Wang’S The People’S Republic Of Desire (2006), Kelly Yin Nga Tse Feb 2017

Post/Feminist Impulses: Neoliberal Ideology And Class Politics In Annie Wang’S The People’S Republic Of Desire (2006), Kelly Yin Nga Tse

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper critically examines post/feminist imperatives in relation to neoliberal ethos and class dynamics in The People’s Republic of Desire (2006) by transnational Chinese women writer, Annie Wang (b. 1972). While the novel positions itself as a transnational satire of the Western-styled consumptive furor in post-socialist China, its textual focus on a class-based commodity culture demands a critical consideration of its neoliberal investments. In probing Wang’s text, this paper adopts a feminist reading that attends to how neoliberal ideology and class politics operate together to corroborate a postfeminist stance. The awareness of feminist ethics notwithstanding, the text’s overall postfeminist disposition …

Nymphs And Nymphomania: Mythological Medicine And Classical Nudity In Nineteenth Century Britain, Isabella Luta Feb 2017

Nymphs And Nymphomania: Mythological Medicine And Classical Nudity In Nineteenth Century Britain, Isabella Luta

Journal of International Women's Studies

The concept of women being overwhelmed by excessive sexual desire had been present in medical discourse for a long time, but the nineteenth century saw a shift from describing this using the term ‘Furor Uterinus’ to ‘Nymphomania’. In this paper I will investigate the significance behind this change and explore how myth influenced medicine to tackle the question of why ‘Nymphomania’ became the preferred term for excessive female sexuality in the 19th century. I will consider the connections between artistic depictions of nymphs and medical descriptions of nymphomaniacs, whilst exploring the etymology of ‘Nymphomania’ and ambiguous uses of Latin and …

Feminist Epistemology And The Question Of Difference Reconfigured: What Can Wittgenstein Tell Us About "Women"?, Jana Cattien Feb 2017

Feminist Epistemology And The Question Of Difference Reconfigured: What Can Wittgenstein Tell Us About "Women"?, Jana Cattien

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist standpoint theory is an important tool of many a feminist activist. It provides us with the epistemological justification to take women’s experiences seriously – not as an obstacle to “objectivity”, but as a form of epistemic privilege. This paper takes postmodern and intersectional critiques of feminist standpoint theory as a critical point of departure to re-examine the debate around the relevance of the signifier “women” in feminist epistemology. Its aim is two-fold: first, it seeks to shed new light on these criticisms by using the lived experiences of mixed-race women as an innovative lens through which to examine the …

The Role Of Pedagogical Beliefs In Emerging Technology Integration: An Exploratory Case Study Of Faculty Perspectives, Marianne Justus Feb 2017

The Role Of Pedagogical Beliefs In Emerging Technology Integration: An Exploratory Case Study Of Faculty Perspectives, Marianne Justus

The Qualitative Report

The integration of social media, mobile/wireless and Web 2.0 technologies in higher education supports student engagement locally and globally to create new knowledge using innovative strategies. However, there remains a disconnect between the positive perceptions of faculty regarding the value of integrating technology and its adoption in online contexts. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to investigate the factors that influence faculty to integrate innovative and emerging technologies, and to consider whether pedagogical beliefs influence choice and adoption of technology. Participants included graduate and undergraduate faculty members who had experience teaching online; were representative of diverse disciplines …

Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Model Policy Issues In The Face Of Uncertainty And Limited Data, Brian Gregor Feb 2017

Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Model Policy Issues In The Face Of Uncertainty And Limited Data, Brian Gregor

PSU Transportation Seminars

Planners and policymakers are often faced with the need to make decisions about issues for which there is uncertainty and limited data. For example, transportation planners are now faced with the prospect that new transportation technologies such as autonomous vehicles could greatly alter future transportation system needs. Decisions about these types of issues are difficult to reason about and consequently are likely to be ignored or made on the basis of simplistic logic. Although modeling could be helpful, especially for issues involving complex systems, it is rarely used because models usually require large amounts of data and and handle uncertainty …

On Doubting Nephi's Break Between 1 And 2 Nephi: A Critique Of Joseph Spencer's "An Other Testament: On Typology", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This essay rejects the proposal by Joseph Spencer to recognize the true break in Nephi's two books as occurring after the fifth chapter of the second book. The essay invokes standard interpretive practices arguing that while Spencer does present reasoning to make sense of this novel proposal, he does not acknowledge the much greater weight of standard interpretation or provide explanations for ignoring it.

Novel Intelligent Neural Guidance Law By Using Multi-Optimization Algorithms, Jium-Ming Lin, Cheng-Hung Lin Feb 2017

Novel Intelligent Neural Guidance Law By Using Multi-Optimization Algorithms, Jium-Ming Lin, Cheng-Hung Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

There are parameter variation effects that would reduce the performance of missile terminal guidance system, e.g., target maneuverability, missile autopilot time constant, turning rate time constant as well as radome slope error effects. To solve this problem this research proposed a novel neural-fuzzy missile terminal guidance law by applying three different neural network optimization algorithms alternatively in each step, such as the Gradient Descent (GD), SCG (Scaled Conjugate Gradient), and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) methods. Moreover, the missile turning rate time constant, autopilot time delay, target maneuverability, glint and fading noises, radome slope error, missile initial heading error as well as acceleration …
