Eclipsing Expectations: How A Third Grader Set His Own Goals (And Taught Us All How To Listen), Diane L. Berman, David J. Connor Feb 2017

Eclipsing Expectations: How A Third Grader Set His Own Goals (And Taught Us All How To Listen), Diane L. Berman, David J. Connor

Occasional Paper Series

A description of an illuminating journey through the eyes of a parent, Diane, who wanted a more inclusive experience for her son Benny. For Diane and Benny, this meant becoming meaningful participants not only in Benny’s own classroom community but in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings that determined his educational goals. David uses a DSE framework to analyze and highlight the importance of context, as opposed to focusing on the disability condition, in enacting inclusionary practices. The authors argue for an “adhocratic” model of education that views children, educators, and parents as allies.

Supporting Parent Engagement In Linguistically Diverse Families To Promote Young Children’S Life Success, Sandra Barrueco, Sheila Smith, Samuel A. Stephens

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

This paper examines research that can inform policies aimed at building the capacity of early care and education programs to promote parent engagement in linguistically diverse families. The key questions addressed include:1 )What factors affect linguistically diverse families’ access to early care and education programs?; 2)What do we know about linguistically diverse families and how parents in these families support their young children’s learning and development?; 3) What features of early care and education programs appear to contribute to high levels of parent engagement in linguistically diverse families?; and 4) What policies can help increase the capacity of early care …

Txoj Kev Ntshiab: Hmong American Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Intellectual Phoniness And Psychosociocultural Persistence Decisions, Jenjee T. Sengkhammee, Pa Her, Alberta M. Gloria, Mariko M. Lin, Betty Jo Thao, Desiree Cabinte, Linda Aroonsavath Feb 2017

Txoj Kev Ntshiab: Hmong American Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Intellectual Phoniness And Psychosociocultural Persistence Decisions, Jenjee T. Sengkhammee, Pa Her, Alberta M. Gloria, Mariko M. Lin, Betty Jo Thao, Desiree Cabinte, Linda Aroonsavath

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Examining the educational experiences of 103 Hmong American undergraduates, gender and class standing differences emerged using a psychosociocultural approach. Females reported increased perceptions of family and friend support and greater cultural congruity in the university environment than males. Lower-division students indicated greater perceptions of social support from family, greater cultural congruity, and lower self-esteem than upper-division students. Feelings of phoniness emerged as the most significant negative predictor of academic persistence decisions. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed.

Enlightened Originalism, Ian Farrell Feb 2017

Enlightened Originalism, Ian Farrell

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This Article proposes a novel, unique theory of constitutional interpretation, namely “enlightened originalism.” According to enlightened originalism, when contemporary constitutional actors give meaning to the terms of the Constitution, they should use the meaning those terms had when the relevant provisions were originally adopted. But we do not find the original meaning of terms such as “equal protection,” “due process,” and “cruel and unusual punishment” by seeking the meaning intended by the relevant framers or ratifiers; nor by looking to any original public meaning. These terms incorporate moral concepts, the meaning of which is objective and independent of the views …

Representative Bureaucracy, Street-Level Bureaucrats And Bureaucratic Discretion In Federal Disaster Assistance, Jason David Rivera Feb 2017

Representative Bureaucracy, Street-Level Bureaucrats And Bureaucratic Discretion In Federal Disaster Assistance, Jason David Rivera

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

This paper explores the role of representative bureaucracy and bureaucratic discretion in the allocation of federal disaster assistance to Hurricane Sandy survivors. Through the analysis of focus groups and key informant interviews, this study finds that FEMA home inspectors are not diverse in reference to race and gender; however, inspectors are found to be diverse in reference to place of origin. Although the role that race and gender play in the allocation of resources is found to be unclear, the region from which inspectors come from is found to be influential in the allocation of aid to survivors. As such, …

Academic Problem-Solving And Students’ Identities As Engineers, Mirka Koro-Ljungberg, Elliot P. Douglas, Nathan J. Mcneill, David J. Therriault, Christine S. Lee, Zaria Malcolm Feb 2017

Academic Problem-Solving And Students’ Identities As Engineers, Mirka Koro-Ljungberg, Elliot P. Douglas, Nathan J. Mcneill, David J. Therriault, Christine S. Lee, Zaria Malcolm

The Qualitative Report

Socially constructed identities and language practices influence the ways students perceive themselves as learners, problem solvers, and future professionals. While research has been conducted on individuals’ identity as engineers, less has been written about how the language used during engineering problem solving influences students’ perceptions and their construction of identities as learners and future engineers. This study investigated engineering students’ identities as reflected in their use of language and discourses while engaged in an engineering problem solving activity. We conducted interviews with eight engineering students at a large southeastern university about their approaches to open and closed-ended materials engineering problems. …

Pauline Pneumatology: Where Is The Spirit In Colossians?, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr. Feb 2017

Pauline Pneumatology: Where Is The Spirit In Colossians?, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr.

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

Many scholars have noted a significant difference between the theology of the undisputed Pauline writings and that of Colossians, namely the abundance of pneumatology in the former and its apparent absence in the latter. If Colossians is a Pauline epistle, where is the Spirit? This study seeks to answer this question by conducting an exegetical and intertextual analysis of pneumatological language and concepts in the undisputed Pauline writings and Colossians. This analysis leads the study to conclude that, while pneumatology features less prominently in Colossians than in the undisputed Pauline writings, it still is present in four explicit and seven …

The Lord Of The Wedding Ring: J.R.R. Tolkien’S True Love, Jason B. Whiting

Faculty Publications

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is known worldwide for his fantastic characters and creations. His hobbits, dwarves, elves and warriors have changed the face of literature and culture. As a boy, he had unusual interests. He loved reading mythology, playing chess, drawing fierce dragons, and by age 9, young Ronald (as he was usually called) had invented several languages. Well-known is Tolkien’s prodigious geek cred, but less known is that he was a hopeless romantic.

An Examination Of John Burton’S Method Of Conflict Resolution And Its Applicability To The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, John Kenneth Steinmeyer Feb 2017

An Examination Of John Burton’S Method Of Conflict Resolution And Its Applicability To The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, John Kenneth Steinmeyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper argues that the interactive problem-solving workshops created by political scientist John Burton and applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by social psychologist Herbert Kelman, while not, as yet, resulting in a just and permanent peace agreement, are effective in resolving intractable conflict, and, if persistently used, can significantly help to produce such an agreement. This is done by closely examining two books of Burton and a series of articles by Kelman to describe their process; the characteristics of intractable conflict are also reviewed from the work of social psychologist Daniel Bar-Tal. It is then argued that the psychological elements …

Biblical Archaeology Or Near Eastern Archaeology? Redefining The Discipline From A Biblical Foundation, Michael G. Hasel, Ph.D. Feb 2017

Biblical Archaeology Or Near Eastern Archaeology? Redefining The Discipline From A Biblical Foundation, Michael G. Hasel, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The original impetus in the early 1800s behind the worldwide discipline of archaeology was the exploration of Bible lands in the ancient Near East. Early discoveries began to fill museums in Europe and excite Christian believers. Governments began a vigorous competition and funded major excavations in order to elucidate the Bible, while scholarly societies were founded to carry out this work. But with time, the influence of secular thinking and the philosophical presuppositions of the Enlightenment began having their effect. From the 1940s through the 1970s there was a revival in Protestant America in the discipline of “Biblical Archaeology” led …

Grains Without Territory: Voicing Alexander Garsden’S [Ja] Maser And The De-Centralized Vocal Subject, Jessica Aszodi Feb 2017

Grains Without Territory: Voicing Alexander Garsden’S [Ja] Maser And The De-Centralized Vocal Subject, Jessica Aszodi

Directions of New Music

The singing subject is both site-of and author-of her practice. This practice-based, artistic research unpacks the entangled process of making new music, conscious that the performer-author is the site where embodied problem solving takes place. The principal focus of the paper is the author’s realization of Alexander Garsden’s [ja] Maser, for voice and electronics, created by recording and reconstituting vocal elements using traditional compositional and performative methods as well as studio recording and granular synthesis. The author approaches the realization of this new work as an experimental practice in dialogue with theoretical frames that inform and situate the research. …
