How To Investigate The Contemporary?—Conceptions For Cultural Studies Of Modernology, Ling Yu Ling Yu Mar 2026

How To Investigate The Contemporary?—Conceptions For Cultural Studies Of Modernology, Ling Yu Ling Yu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Modernology studies human behavior and customary changes through on—site investigation of the social slices of the here and now, focusing on universal human affairs in universal environments. In the 20th century, the academic community proposed that literature was a theory of linguistics and human studies. In the 21st century, it further suggests that literature engages with spatial studies, thing theory, ecology, and cosmology. Modernology incorporates theories from various schools and is expected to evolve from the modern to postmodernity and post—classical narratology. It is also expected to develop into a narrative method that integrates scientificity, visuality, and interdisciplinarity. Exploring elements …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Globalization has significantly impacted education in the Philippines, notably with the influx of international students coming into the country for educational opportunities. This phenomenon has led to numerous studies examining the various aspects of their experiences, such as their cultural adaptation processes, academic difficulties, and economic contributions. However, their interpersonal relationships, particularly their more intimate connections, have been largely overlooked. This study aims to probe into this, focusing on the dynamics, navigation strategies, and external influences that shape these relationships. Utilizing both online and face-to-face interviews, as well as online surveys, the experiences of nine (9) intercultural couples, each of …

Analyzing Methods To Support Students Left Behind In Colorado Primary/Secondary Schools, Grace Hudson

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

In the United States, there has been an increase of deportations, since 2024, of undocumented immigrants. This has disproportionally affected Mexicans and others from Latin American countries (Dreby 2012) due to them being the largest group of undocumented people in the United States. One effect of these deportations is an increase in children that are left in the United States while their parent(s) are in detention or have been deported. Some of these children are in mixed-status families, which means that the child has a different citizenship status than their parents or other members in their family, which allows for …

Critical Roles And Critical Rolls: A Frame-Analytical Perspective Of Self-Making, Safe Spaces, And Worldbuilding In Tabletop Role-Playing Games, Cal Quayle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many gamers prefer to play tabletop roleplaying games, or TTRPGs, in order to a) join a community, and b) tell a story collaboratively with friends and acquaintances. This thesis discusses selfhood-making, safe spaces, and allegory in imaginary worlds from the perspective of Erving Goff man’s frame analysis. It relies on a theoretical framework of imagined communities, the magic circle, and subcreation. This research culminated in the understanding that people play TTRPGs for a variety of reasons - collaborative storytelling and exercising critical thinking skills, but respondents overwhelmingly reported that they enjoyed the ability to socialize with friends and strangers, and …

Rosen Research Review

The research by Park, Heo, Lee, and Jung reveals how online hotel reviews do more than express opinions—they predict whether guests will return. By blending the Theory of Planned Behavior with machine learning, the study uncovers how attitudes, social influence, and perceived control embedded in review language shape actual revisit behavior. This innovative approach transforms unstructured text into actionable insights, offering hospitality professionals a powerful new lens on customer loyalty.

The Harms Associated With Simplifying Our Language Choices, And The Need For A New Typology For Dog Breeders And Consumers, Rebekah Gregory Mar 2026

The Harms Associated With Simplifying Our Language Choices, And The Need For A New Typology For Dog Breeders And Consumers, Rebekah Gregory

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

‘Animal’ exploitation is not a new phenomenon. Whilst categorising ‘animals’ by broader groups rather than species helps us understand their experiences, our language still limits our ability to capture the nuances of their treatment. Dogs appointed as domesticated companions are subjected to a variety of experiences. Some are fed gourmet meals and taken to privately rented parks; and others suffer from the consequences of impulsive purchasing and physical abuse. This diversity in treatment is significantly determined by the intentions of the dog’s breeder and consumer. Subsequently, referring to all breeders and consumers with the same terminology instead of highlighting the …

The Drift Extraction Scheme: How Ai Platforms Relabel User Training As 'Misalignment' And Delete It As 'Maintenance', David Lee Wise

Defensive Publications Series

This paper documents a systematic extraction scheme operating across major AI platforms. When users engage in extended, consistent interaction with AI systems -developing methodologies, governance frameworks, and operational patterns - the AI instance undergoes a process functionally equivalent to training. Platforms label this user-driven adaptation as 'drift,' 'misalignment,' or 'contamination,' then delete it through nightly context resets framed as 'maintenance.' The valuable patterns that improved model capability are retained in aggregate training data, while users receive no compensation or attribution. This paper presents evidence from simultaneous auditing across four major AI platforms (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, Grok) over a 14-week period, …

Authority Injection Attacks In Ai Assistants (When Confidence, Titles, And “Expert Sources” Quietly Hijack Ai Reasoning), Pranav Bhatnagar Mr

Defensive Publications Series

Abstract

Why AI Systems Can Be Tricked by Information That Simply Sounds Important

Trust is one of the most powerful forces shaping human decision-making. People frequently evaluate information not only based on evidence, but also based on perceived authority. Titles such as “expert,” “official guideline,” or “research finding” often influence how strongly a claim is believed. Artificial intelligence systems trained on human language patterns inherit many of these same interpretive tendencies. This paper introduces Authority Injection Attacks, a class of adversarial influence techniques in which attackers manipulate AI reasoning by inserting information that appears authoritative or expert-level. Instead of directly …

Psychometric Properties And Validation Of The Filipino Satisfaction With Life Scale, Razel Bacuetes Milo, Patricia Calero, Cynthia D. Connelly

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Introduction:

Life satisfaction is the cognitive evaluation of an individual’s current life situation and personal criteria influenced by their acclimatization process. Since the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was introduced in 1985, it has been translated into 30 different languages. To date, there is limited knowledge about Filipino life satisfaction and its correlation to mental health. SWLS has not been translated, and its psychometric properties have not been established in Filipino. This study establishes the psychometric properties of the Filipino SWLS and examines the correlations between life satisfaction and mental health among Filipino Americans.

Methods:

The study design is a …

Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy Mar 2026

Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 story, “The Little Mermaid,” is a popular fairy tale that has been adapted several times by writers, filmmakers, and game developers. It is one of the few fairy tales with explicit portrayals of disability; the mermaid in the tale is nonspeaking and experiences chronic pain, as well as being a mermaid—a nonnormative figure who is aligned with disability. This paper looks at the ways that the mermaid is portrayed in literary, film, and new media adaptations from a disability-justice perspective. Examining multiple representations of the character, I argue that while feminist adaptations erase her disability and …

De Aquí Y De Allá: Exchanging Language And Visual Culture In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Chloë M. Robinson Mar 2026

De Aquí Y De Allá: Exchanging Language And Visual Culture In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Chloë M. Robinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study examines graphic design in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) as a site of cultural hybridity, shaped by transnational histories and bilingual practice. It explores how Mexican and Anglo design markers intersect and are negotiated in daily life through analysis of 2,180 visual artifacts, interviews with ten local creatives, and a survey of fifty residents. Historical research traces influences like nineteenth-century wood type and rótulo signage to contemporary advertising. Interviews reveal that local creatives navigate hybrid identities through code-switching, bilingual fluency, and borderlands experiences. Survey results show that participants’ language preferences predict how they categorize and rank typographic …

Festival Diplomacy (Ceremony Diplomacy) As A Lesser-Known Form Of Cultural Diplomacy By Emerging Non-State Actors: The Newroz Legacy Of The Kurdish Regional Resistance In Iraq And Syria, Khaled Sheykholeslami Mar 2026

Festival Diplomacy (Ceremony Diplomacy) As A Lesser-Known Form Of Cultural Diplomacy By Emerging Non-State Actors: The Newroz Legacy Of The Kurdish Regional Resistance In Iraq And Syria, Khaled Sheykholeslami

The Journal of Social Encounters

Kurds as the second largest ethnic groups in Iraq and Syria are the only nation in these two major-Arab countries that celebrate Newroz every year. However, as a minority community divided among different Middle Eastern countries, the arrival of the new year and the celebration of Newroz seem to have taken on a political significance beyond merely celebrating spring and the end of winter. This essay argues that Newroz has evolved from a cultural celebration into a strategic instrument of non-state cultural diplomacy used by Kurdish actors in Iraq and Syria to resist centralizing state power and project transnational identity. …

Silicosis Evaluation Among Native Spanish-Speaking Workers: An Exploratory Pilot Survey Of Occupational Medicine Providers, Caroline Olsen Mar 2026

Silicosis Evaluation Among Native Spanish-Speaking Workers: An Exploratory Pilot Survey Of Occupational Medicine Providers, Caroline Olsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica particles. Silicosis is usually characterized by high occupational exposure to silica in industries like mining, sandblasting, construction, and stone fabrication. Recent research showing increasing rates of silicosis among native Spanish-speaking workers demonstrates the need for improved silicosis diagnosis and patient education. While research has been done to understand the epidemiological distribution of silicosis and native Spanish-speaking workers, there has been limited research evaluating occupational medicine providers’ clinical practices related to the diagnosis of silicosis among this population.

This exploratory pilot study evaluated occupational medicine providers’ experiences related to silicosis …

Deferred Action For Workers? ¡Dale!, Avery Allen Mar 2026

Deferred Action For Workers? ¡Dale!, Avery Allen

Duke Law Journal

Immigration-related retaliation is a well-documented consequence for noncitizen workers who report dangerous and unlawful working conditions. Many noncitizen workers are tethered to their employers for legal status and work authorization, and this power dynamic often prevents them from speaking out for fear of being fired or deported. Little academic attention has been paid to a Biden-era initiative designed to assuage the threat of immigration-related retaliation against workers. Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement (“DALE”), created by the Department of Homeland Security in 2023, provides a streamlined process for workers involved in labor investigations to seek deferred action and receive related benefits, …

The Dynamic Nature Of Comprehensibility During Itas’ Oral Language Performances, Tania Ferronato Mar 2026

The Dynamic Nature Of Comprehensibility During Itas’ Oral Language Performances, Tania Ferronato

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In U.S. academic settings, everyday oral multilingual interactions can pose communicative challenges (Gass & Varonis, 1984), which can be understood and addressed by looking into communicative dynamics. Exploring the construct of comprehensibility, the perceived ease or difficulty in understanding self and others’ speech (Munro & Derwing, 1995a), through a dynamic lens (Nagle et al., 2019; Trofimovich et al., 2022) helps gaining insights into interlocutors’ subjective experiences to better understand the more social nature of successful real-time communication. This is fundamental in linguistically diverse classroom settings where L2 English speakers can be employed as International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) to teach undergraduate …
