Question Type Recognition Using Natural Language Input, Aishwarya Soni Jun 2017

Question Type Recognition Using Natural Language Input, Aishwarya Soni

Master's Projects

Recently, numerous specialists are concentrating on the utilization of Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems in various domains, for example, data extraction and content mining. One of the difficulties with these innovations is building up a precise Question and Answering (QA) System. Question type recognition is the most significant task in a QA system, for example, chat bots. Organization such as National Institute of Standards (NIST) hosts a conference series called as Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) series which keeps a competition every year to encourage and improve the technique of information retrieval from a large corpus of text. When a user …

The Relationship Between School Mobility And Gifted Identification In Connecticut Public Schools, Christina M. Amspaugh Jun 2017

The Relationship Between School Mobility And Gifted Identification In Connecticut Public Schools, Christina M. Amspaugh

Doctoral Dissertations

Educators and policy makers are interested in understanding the impact of school mobility, which is often associated with negative outcomes including declines in academic achievement and increases in behavioral and discipline problems. Changing schools also puts students at risk of not having their academic needs recognized and met. For high ability, academically gifted students, this means that moves involving school changes may be associated with barriers that limit access to gifted identification. Lack of identification for students with gifted education needs limits the ability to advocate for or gain access to gifted education services within or beyond the school, ultimately …

Byu Stamp Scavenger Hunt, Mandy Elsmore, Gary Barton Jun 2017

Byu Stamp Scavenger Hunt, Mandy Elsmore, Gary Barton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of this project was to provide an informative and unifying activity for BYU students through an art installation and exhibition. It was inspired by Japanese Eki (Train) Station stamps, which promotes tourism throughout all of Japan, to popular and unknown areas, due to people interest in collecting ink stamps placed at each station. I thought creating a stamp scavenger hunt throughout BYU campus would help students to get to know campus better and the different departments within them. Speaking from my own personal experience, it was not until this project that I really got to know BYU campus. …

Teaching “In Their Best Interest”: Preservice Teachers' Narratives Regarding English Learners, Amanda T. Sugimoto, Kathy Carter, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr Jun 2017

Teaching “In Their Best Interest”: Preservice Teachers' Narratives Regarding English Learners, Amanda T. Sugimoto, Kathy Carter, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr

Teacher Education

In the United States, teachers are increasingly working with English Learners (ELs) in mainstream classrooms. Several areas of focus have been proposed to guide the preparation of teachers for working with ELs, including: language related knowledge, skills, and dispositions. This narrative study examined how field-based experiences shaped 49 preservice teachers' dispositions toward ELs. An iterative and thematic analysis of collected narratives found that preservice teachers often completed their practicum in classrooms that did not model positive dispositions or pedagogical practices toward ELs. These findings have implications for the tasks and experiences given to preservice teachers during their preparation sequence.

N400, P600, And Late Sustained Frontal Positivity Event-Related Brain Potentials Reflect Distinct Psycholinguistic Processes During The Comprehension Of Contextually Ambiguous Narrative Discourses: Implications For The Neural Organization Of The Language Processing System, Patrick S. Ledwidge

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Two studies were performed to investigate the temporal structure and organization of the language processing system during the comprehension of coherent contextually ambiguous narrative discourses. In Study 1, participants read short discourses that were contextually ambiguous if read without a descriptive title (Untitled group) or unambiguous with the title (Titled group). Participants identified the title of the discourses after reading 1-3 sentences. Given the unfinished next sentence, they performed a cloze procedure on the sentence-final word. For the Titled Group, cloze probability was greater to the last word of sentence 3 (Critical Word 3) than sentences 2 (Critical Word 2) …

Using Multimodal Modules To Address Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge Gap In Learning To Teach English Language Learners, Guofang Li, Denisse M. Hinojosa, Lindsay Wexler, Yue Bian, Jose Manuel Matinez

TAPESTRY

Researchers have argued that teacher education programs fail to prepare effective teachers for the increasing English language learner (ELL). In response to the under preparedness of pre-service teachers (PSTs) for ELLs, the authors designed a six-module online lab course for a group of 22 TESOL minor PSTs. The content of the modules included knowledge of ELLs and their parents, the socio-political context of teaching ELLs, and strategies of teaching knowledge and content to ELLs. PSTs reported they benefited from the learning opportunities these modules provided, including: familiarizing them with the challenges ELLs faced, the importance of and ideas for involving …

Early Childhood Mathematics Through A Social Justice Lens: An Autoethnography, Jennifer Ward Jun 2017

Early Childhood Mathematics Through A Social Justice Lens: An Autoethnography, Jennifer Ward

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this autoethnography was to explore the experiences, both successes and challenges, as I worked to teach mathematics using a social justice framework in a summer enrichment camp with four and five-year-old children. Drawing from both critical approaches (Freire, 1968) and sociocultural approaches (Rogoff, 2008), this dissertation outlines critical perspectives within Early Childhood Education, as well as trends in teaching mathematics for social justice to frame the research study. Autoethnography was selected as a methodological approach in this study as I examined my own teaching experiences and journey engaging in teaching mathematics for social justice. Primary data sources …

This study identified which of the nine affective components of global competence and four higher order cultural values were perceived to be important in the MENA region. It also examined the correlations between cultural values and affective components and whether significant differences existed based on gender, age, and country of citizenship.

This research involved the combination of Wallenberg-Lerner’s Affective Component Questionnaire (ACQ) and Schwartz’s Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ). In conjunction with a …

The Racialized And Gendered Representations Of Multiculturalism From An Elite Firm Approach, Ryeora Choe Jun 2017

The Racialized And Gendered Representations Of Multiculturalism From An Elite Firm Approach, Ryeora Choe

Sociology ETDs

This thesis explores how Korean business firms reproduce racial division and hierarchies in the face of changing immigration under new post-colonial dynamics. In my exploration, I ask the following questions: How is the idea of multiculturalism represented, framed, and carried out in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs? Who is included as ‘multicultural’ in these programs? What racial meanings do these programs convey in the Korean context? Using qualitative content analysis of reports and websites, I analyze how the top 30 Korean firms negotiate the meanings of multiculturalism and shape notions of it through their CSR programs. Findings show that …

Adverbial Clauses And Speaker And Interlocutor Gender In Shakespeare’S Plays, Theresa Mcgarry, Kelsey Kiser Jun 2017

Adverbial Clauses And Speaker And Interlocutor Gender In Shakespeare’S Plays, Theresa Mcgarry, Kelsey Kiser

ETSU Faculty Works

This study draws on previous findings regarding adverbial clauses in relation to speaker and interlocutor gender in a corpus of current actual speaker data. Our aim is to examine those same relations in a corpus of Shakespeare’s comedies and histories. Mondorf (2004) investigated four types of adverbial clauses in a corpus of modern speech and found that the women used more causal, conditional and purpose clauses than the men, while the men used more concessive clauses. Mondorf’s explanation for this difference is that women use the three clause types that mitigate the speaker’s commitment to the truth of the proposition, …

A Global Approach To Promoting Ebp Knowledge: Validating The Translated Version Of Ekan Into Spanish, Jan Marie Nick, Amy Hagedorn Wonder, Alfa Rigel Suero, Darrell R. Jr. Spurlock Jun 2017

A Global Approach To Promoting Ebp Knowledge: Validating The Translated Version Of Ekan Into Spanish, Jan Marie Nick, Amy Hagedorn Wonder, Alfa Rigel Suero, Darrell R. Jr. Spurlock

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: This study is part of a multi-site research project aimed at documenting the evidence-based practice (EBP) knowledge of nursing students on a global scale. Although the benefits of EBP are widely known, EBP is still not consistently implemented across care settings. A variety of subjective instruments are used in countries to gauge what nursing students know about EBP. The documented lack of correlation between subjective and objective knowledge measures (Zell & Krizan, 2014) coupled with a lack of consistent instrumentation to enable generalizability of findings are two factors that inhibit a global approach toward promoting EBP and collaboratively advancing …

Family Emotional Literacy: A Critical Education Curriculum For Mental Health Promotion, Anna L. Dinallo Jun 2017

Family Emotional Literacy: A Critical Education Curriculum For Mental Health Promotion, Anna L. Dinallo

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This narrative study documents the experiences of seven Latina community educators through focus groups, interviews, and artifact data. Given the stigma of mental health (Bayer, 2005), a lack of culturally centered emotional curriculums (Boler, 1997; Boler & Zembylas, 2003) which are removed from structural oppression (Collins, 2002,1989; Crenshaw, 1991, 1993; hooks, 2014), educators, parents, and communities are in need of mental health promotion tools. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2015), approximately 70 million Americans annually are diagnosed with mental health issues that disable daily functioning. More relevant to the study population was the loss of three middle school-aged …

From Foix To Dalí: Versions Of Catalan Surrealism Between Barcelona And Paris, Enric Bou Jun 2017

From Foix To Dalí: Versions Of Catalan Surrealism Between Barcelona And Paris, Enric Bou

Artl@s Bulletin

The purpose of this article is to illustrate a little known episode of Salvador Dalí’s initial intervention in the surrealist movement: his relationship with Catalan writer Josep Vicenç Foix. To what extent writers such as Foix adapted Surrealism in his own writing and what kind of exchanges he had with Paris? Was Foix a predecessor of Dalí’s surrealist writing? As early as 1918, J.V. Foix made an impact in Catalan literary circles and one of the first imitators of Apollinaire (and maybe Breton). After 1926 Foix he developed a close relationship with Dalí and helped him with the publication of …

Distance And Distortion: Amadeo Souza Cardoso's And Joan Miró'S War-Years Painting And The Words That Fail Them, Joana Cunha Leal Jun 2017

Distance And Distortion: Amadeo Souza Cardoso's And Joan Miró'S War-Years Painting And The Words That Fail Them, Joana Cunha Leal

Artl@s Bulletin

This essay considers art historical discourses on the work produced during the First World War by two painters born and living in the Iberian Peninsula: the Portuguese Amadeo de Souza Cardoso (1887–1918) and the Catalan Joan Miró (1893–1983). It considers the dialogues and relations maintained by these painters in their war-affected national artistic milieus and with the equally disrupted, international avant-garde circles, while discussing historiographical biased assumptions about production-places and their meanings, namely how localness was read as expressing isolation, distance, and lack of aesthetic significance.

“How You Mean?” Speech, Resistance, And The Contemporary Relevance Of Paule Marshall, Jason T. Hendrickson Jun 2017

“How You Mean?” Speech, Resistance, And The Contemporary Relevance Of Paule Marshall, Jason T. Hendrickson

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This article centralizes Paule Marshall’s own conception of language and voice as vehicles of acculturation and resistance. Drawing from textual analyses of Brown Girls, Brownstones (1959), The Chosen Place, The Timeless People (1969), her own reflections upon language, and literary scholarship, this article contends that Marshall’s use of language seeks to give voice to the marginalized, pay homage to the “mother poets” who influenced her, and offer a rebuke to a Fanonian “white gaze” in its unapologetic embrace of culture and history. With specific attention to intricacies of Bajan Creole and African American Vernacular English, I show how Marshall preserves …

"Threads Thin To The Point Of Invisibility, Yet Strong As Ropes" : Afrofuturistic Diaspora In Paule Marshall’S Praisesong For The Widow, Janelle Rodriques

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Praisesong for the Widow (1984) tells the story of African-American Avey Johnson’s arrival in Grenada, having abandoned an opulent Caribbean cruise, and her sudden encounter with the local “excursion” on nearby Carriacou. Having experienced physical and psychological unease even before this trip she finds that, in attempting to return “home” to her comfortable life in New York, she discovers a new home, that within the transatlantic African diaspora. Ostensibly, Praisesong is a story of a woman past middle age “rediscovering herself” against the backdrop of an exotic Caribbean tourist imaginary, but Avey comes to an understanding not only of herself …
