Long Panel Studies Of Small-Scale Rural Societies In The Global South: What Is Their Value, Why Are They Rare, And Suggestions To Make Them Happen, Jonathan Bauchet, Ricardo Godoy, William R. Leonard, Victoria Reyes-Garcia, Asher Y. Rosinger, Susan Tanner, Eduardo A. Undurraga

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Many topics in the behavioral sciences and epidemiology require researchers to directly observe entities (e.g., individuals, households) over a long time to identify lasting effects. Long-term panel data collection is more common in high-income countries than in small-scale rural societies (SSRS) of low-income countries. SSRS are mobile, nature-dependent, linguistic minorities, and highly autarkic. Analyzing such data using a life-course perspective can help uncover patterns that align or upend what we know from high-income countries. This study a) reviews long (>∼10 year) panels in SSRS (n = 9), b) extends the analysis to cover somewhat comparable societies of smallholders (n …

Where Art Meets The Table: Food, Art, And Culture At The Intersection Of Crisis And Hope, Ciza Zoya May 2026

Where Art Meets The Table: Food, Art, And Culture At The Intersection Of Crisis And Hope, Ciza Zoya

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Food is more than sustenance; it is a carrier of memory, identity, and power, shaping both belonging and exclusion. In contemporary art, food has emerged as a critical medium through which these tensions can be explored. This paper argues that food- based art operates at the intersection of crisis and hope, revealing how everyday practices of cooking, sharing, and eating both reflect social hierarchies and create possibilities for connection. Drawing on anthropological perspectives, contemporary art theory, and the author’s own artistic practice, the paper examines how food functions as a social structure shaped by gender, class, caste, and colonial histories. …

Food In Dinneen’S Foclóir Gaedhilge Agus Béarla, John D. Mulcahy May 2026

Food In Dinneen’S Foclóir Gaedhilge Agus Béarla, John D. Mulcahy

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Inspired by the work of the late Manchán Magan, this paper examines Irish food and hospitality through the lens of historical lexicography using the 1927 edition of Fr Patrick Dinneen’s Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla as a linguistic “time capsule”. By examining Irish words connected with everyday eating, the paper traces how these words embody resilience, reciprocity, and hope in the face of recurring crises such as famine, emigration, and political upheaval. The paper also draws attention to roles associated with food provision and banqueting, underlining the long-standing importance of hospitality in Irish society. This approach uncovers how hospitality was understood …

Oral Tradition And Literary Innovation In An Epigraphic Oracle: Claros And Caesarea Trocetta During The Antonine Plague, Ryo Nagao May 2026

Oral Tradition And Literary Innovation In An Epigraphic Oracle: Claros And Caesarea Trocetta During The Antonine Plague, Ryo Nagao

New England Classical Journal

During the Antonine Plague, the Lydian community of Caesarea Trocetta consulted the oracle of Apollo at Claros and inscribed its response, which was exceptional in form and language. This paper argues that Claros drew on performative literature and oracular traditions to provide an authoritative and innovative response that mediated the distress of the client community. Polymetry, diction, and intertexts with Pausanias and Statius combine to enhance both the aesthetic and religious function of the text. This analysis contributes to the study of epigraphy as literature, the mechanisms of oracular institutions, and civic responses to pandemic.

The Bloom Of Atē: Women's Lives, Pain, And Metaphor In Sophocles' Trachinian Women, Casey Dué, Mary Ebbott May 2026

The Bloom Of Atē: Women's Lives, Pain, And Metaphor In Sophocles' Trachinian Women, Casey Dué, Mary Ebbott

New England Classical Journal

This essay explores recurring metaphors for pain in the Trachinian Women and argues that they gain their meaning from the experiences of the women Deianeira and Iole, to later express the physical pain of Herakles, which is further conceptualized as atē. These metaphors employ imagery associated with natural cycles, such as blooming flowers and ocean waves. The metaphorical connections between the women’s emotional pain and Herakles’ physical agony helps us to arrive at a fuller understanding of what is meant when Herakles concludes that he is “like a parthenos” and has been found to be female (1071 and …

Internalized Homophobia As An Influence On Participation In Hiv Prevention Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men (Ymsm), Kasey I. Brazee May 2026

Internalized Homophobia As An Influence On Participation In Hiv Prevention Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men (Ymsm), Kasey I. Brazee

Honors Scholar Theses

Stigma is a known barrier to accessing preventative services for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), however, the types of stigmas involved in this relationship remain not well defined. Homophobia, or negative attitudes directed towards homosexuality, is a particularly important type of stigma considering the disproportionate effect of HIV on men who have sex with men (MSM). Young MSM (YMSM) are especially impacted, making them a key population in the context of HIV prevention research.  Internalized homophobia, which refers to homophobia that one directs towards themselves, is under researched regarding its role in participating in HIV prevention. In this study, we aimed …

Reinforcement Threshold Controlled Modernn Tuned With J* And QMax Bilingual Spatiotemporal Attention Fusion For Inclusive Real-Time Sign Language Interpretation, Harapriya Kar, P Viswanathan May 2026

Reinforcement Threshold Controlled Modernn Tuned With J* And QMax Bilingual Spatiotemporal Attention Fusion For Inclusive Real-Time Sign Language Interpretation, Harapriya Kar, P Viswanathan

Baghdad Science Journal

Deaf communities still struggle with communication, partly due to the inefficiency of current sign language recognition systems, their poor generalization, and their inability to manage regional and linguistictions. This work suggests a novel architecture that blends attention-based spatiotemporal processing (RTC-ModeRNN-BSF) with a reinforcement threshold–controlled ModeRNN to solve these problems. The model adapts its computation based on the complexity of the input gesture, using between 2 and 8 attention slots, while gradually reducing exploration during training ($\varepsilon$: 0.9→ 0.1). Dual-stream memory pathways are optimized using joint log-likelihood maximization (J-Star) and computational pruning (Q-Max) to capture both immediate sequential patterns (Ct …

Baghdad Science Journal

Thousands of new websites are published every day, which pose significant challenges for web classification and cybersecurity. URL classification datasets, including general and cybersecurity-specific ones, face challenges such as class imbalance, noise, and ambiguous data, which can significantly affect model performance. This study proposes a novel Fine-Tuned FastText Unsupervised Embedding Augmentation Technique (FFUEAT). Datasets (DMOZ and Phishing) were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique, achieving F1-scores of 0.8639 with DistilBERT and 0.8891 with BERT. The performance of sparse minority classes, achieving accuracy increases of 20.88% for 'home', 58.04% for 'news', and 11.18% for the 'kids' categories of …

To Be Closer, Sarah Moschel Miller May 2026

To Be Closer, Sarah Moschel Miller

LSU Master's Theses

to be closer explores the intersection of yearning and unease. This series of works uses the visual language of the body and its thresholds to explore how each of us builds interpersonal relationships and understandings of self. Pulling from abjection theory, the abject comes from the internal becoming external, the crossing of a bodily or personal threshold. My sculptures, vessels, and prints translate the visual language of the border of the body into a discussion of emotional ones. to be closer uses these corporeal thresholds and the language of the uncanny as vehicles to discuss the crossing of emotional …

Smartdesk: Automatic Ticket Classification And Resolution Prediction Using Data Analytics, Danarir Almuhairi May 2026

Smartdesk: Automatic Ticket Classification And Resolution Prediction Using Data Analytics, Danarir Almuhairi

Theses

Public and service-oriented organizations increasingly rely on digital ticketing systems to manage large volumes of citizen and customer requests. Despite this, many ticket management processes remain partially manual, leading to delays in case routing, inefficient resource allocation, and inconsistent resolution times. These challenges can negatively impact service quality, operational efficiency, and user satisfaction, particularly in large-scale public sector environments. This study proposes SmartDesk, a data-driven framework for automatic ticket classification and resolution time prediction using data analytics and natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The research leverages publicly available helpdesk and service ticket datasets to simulate real-world service environments where incoming …

Multi-Agent Safety Architecture Using Geometric Projections And Cryptographic Egress Control, Neel Mohbe May 2026

Multi-Agent Safety Architecture Using Geometric Projections And Cryptographic Egress Control, Neel Mohbe

Defensive Publications Series

Decentralized, multi-agent artificial intelligence (AI) systems can introduce structural vulnerabilities, such as emergent toxicity and alignment erosion, that existing safety paradigms may not fully address. A multi-agent safety architecture is described that can treat safety as a geometric and cryptographic property of a network's communication and consensus fabric. A method can involve mathematically defining a safety concept as a subspace within a model’s activation manifold to create an orthogonal projection operator. This operator may filter agent states to help mitigate harmful emergent content, a cryptographic egress layer with low-rank proofs can be used to verify the filter's application before messages …

Ambient Pre-Conscious Intelligence (Api), Johny Manuel-Devadoss, Deepthi Prasad, Jayden Jack Johnson

Defensive Publications Series

Current artificial intelligence systems are, in practice, still largely reactive in nature. Even the most advanced assistants typically require explicit user prompts, clearly observable interaction events, or high-confidence inference of user intent before they engage in meaningful computational support. As a result, there is an inherent delay between the moment a cognitive need begins to emerge and the moment a system is able to respond. This delay is not merely a technical limitation; it introduces measurable friction into everyday human–computer interaction. In complex, information-dense environments, this friction accumulates, contributing to increased task-switching costs, reduced continuity of thought, and elevated cognitive …

Symmetry And Psychosocial Adaptation To Trauma, Illness And Disability Part I: Views From Physics, Medicine And Psychology, Hanoch Livneh

Leadership, Learning and Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations

The aim of this two-part paper is to discuss the concept of symmetry and its derivatives, symmetry breaking and asymmetry, and the role they assume in elucidating the structure and processes that underlie psychosocial adaptation to traumatic experiences. To achieve this aim, in Part I, first, a cursory review of symmetry is undertaken as it applies to physics, including conservation laws, the forces of nature, and leading theories of nature. Second, the paper addresses how symmetry is perceived in biology and medicine, including symmetry within biochemical and genetic structures, the human body, and the onset of disease processes. Third, the …

The Lion's Share: The Secret Land Grab Of Drake's Circumnavigation, Melissa Cole Darby May 2026

The Lion's Share: The Secret Land Grab Of Drake's Circumnavigation, Melissa Cole Darby

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Francis Drake’s journey around the world between 1577 and 1580 is renowned as one of the most famous voyages in history. The circumnavigation was a great achievement for England, but the official story Queen Elizabeth and her Privy Council maintained for nine years was that Drake was a pirate, and that the treasure he captured on the voyage would be returned to Spain. Upon his return, information about the voyage and his route were suppressed and the crew was sworn to secrecy: they were not to reveal where they travelled on ‘pain of death’. Here I present the case that …

This study employed bibliometric analysis using metadata retrieved from Google Scholar (2019–2024) through the Publish or Perish application. Data were analyzed based on quantitative, qualitative, and structural indicators with VOSviewer to identify publication trends and thematic clusters. Eight main research characteristics were identified: (1) development of Indonesian-based learning models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), (2) teacher–student interaction, (3) the teacher’s role in applying methods and influencing outcomes, (4) student performance and media use, (5) comprehension analysis, (6) …

The Machine For Its Own Sake: Tolkien's Critique Of Instrumental Reason And The Modern Ecological Ethos, Ahmad J. El-Youssef May 2026

The Machine For Its Own Sake: Tolkien's Critique Of Instrumental Reason And The Modern Ecological Ethos, Ahmad J. El-Youssef

Journal of Tolkien Research

This essay examines J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium as a systematic critique of instrumental reason, positioning his work as a vital philosophical resource for diagnosing and navigating the Anthropocene. Rather than a simplistic anti-technology stance, Tolkien's concept of the "Machine" represents a teleological logic that reduces the living world to a standing reserve, paralleling contemporary ecological crises. Through analysis of key narratives, particularly the industrialisation of Isengard, the corruption of the Shire, and the restoration of Lothlórien, this study demonstrates how Tolkien dramatises the ontological flattening inherent in instrumentalist domination. The essay contrasts this with Tolkien's alternative ethos of sub-creation and stewardship, …

Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Inklings: Tolkien And Lewis’S Relative Dimensions In Space-Time, Kristine Larsen May 2026

Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Inklings: Tolkien And Lewis’S Relative Dimensions In Space-Time, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

As noted in Tolkien's letters, around 1936 he and C.S. Lewis agreed to each try their hand at writing "an excursionary 'Thriller'" – essentially science fiction – "each discovering myth." They supposedly “tossed up,” with Lewis drawing a "Space-journey" and Tolkien a "Time-journey" (Letters 39). The standard answer is that this bet resulted in a trio of published space-travel novels for Lewis (Out of the Silent Planet [1938], Perelandra [1943], and That Hideous Strength [1945]) and two incomplete and abandoned time-travel projects for Tolkien, The Lost Road (incomplete typescript dating to 1937 [LR 8]) and The Notion …

Clustering And Switching As A Scoring System In Indonesian Three Word Fluency Tests, Heni Gerda Pesau, Gilles Van Luijtelaar

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The number of correctly produced words is the primary output variable n most verbal fluency tests. The examination of the number of clusters and cluster size achieves a more in-depth analyses of cognitive aspects and processes. We propose a scoring system for phonemic, semantic, and emotion word fluency tests in the Indonesian context. This study aimed to determine the underlying cognitive constructs of the participants, including the clustering and switching indices, using principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 150 participants were included, and the tests were administered online following a previously validated protocol. The three fluency tests loaded different …

Bridging Images And Language In Radiology: A Comprehensive Prisma Systematic Review Of Transformer Vision-Language Models And Clinical Readiness, Mohammad T. Khasawneh Dr., Sadaf Tabatabaee

Systems Science and Industrial Engineering Student Scholarship

Transformer vision-language models (VLMs) promise end-to-end automation of radiology reporting and related multimodal tasks. However, evidence remains fragmented across datasets, architectures, evaluation practices, and levels of clinical validation, limiting fair comparison and safe translation into practice. Following PRISMA 2020/PRISMA-S, search engines including PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were systematically searched for peer-reviewed, English-language studies published between 2019 and 2025 that used paired radiology images and free-text reports. Dual reviewers screened records and extracted data using a locked schema covering datasets, modalities, architectures, training objectives, evaluation metrics, and indicators of clinical readiness. Free-text model descriptions were normalized …

Hidden Behind Happiness: Bhutan’S Global Image And Ethnic Exclusion, Deepesh Das Shrestha May 2026

Hidden Behind Happiness: Bhutan’S Global Image And Ethnic Exclusion, Deepesh Das Shrestha

Master's Theses

Bhutan has gained international recognition for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), which promotes holistic development through principles of well-being, environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and good governance. Yet this celebrated image conceals a darker history: the systematic expulsion of the Lhotsampa, the Nepali-speaking ethnic minority of southern Bhutan. This study critically explores the contradiction between Bhutan's international image as a model of happiness and the lived experiences of Lhotsampa refugees who were displaced during the early 1990s.

Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, the study draws upon in-depth semi-structured interviews with six resettled Bhutanese Lhotsampa refugees living in the …
