A Textual Analysis Of Whistleblower Protections Under The Dodd-Frank Act, Brent T. Murphy
A Textual Analysis Of Whistleblower Protections Under The Dodd-Frank Act, Brent T. Murphy
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note endorses the reasoning of the Fifth Circuit in Asadi v. G.E. Energy (USA), L.L.C., and argues that the plain language of Dodd-Frank limits its whistleblower protections to individuals who provide information to the SEC. This Note argues that the reasoning of the Second Circuit in Berman v. Neo@Ogilvy LLC relying on the Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell is inapposite, and that the Second Circuit introduced ambiguity where no ambiguity previously existed and improperly extended Chevron deference to the SEC.
Beliefs Of Recent Second Language Teacher Education (Slte) Program Graduates Regarding Linguistic Diversity As A Professional Responsibility, Darren C. Gordon
Beliefs Of Recent Second Language Teacher Education (Slte) Program Graduates Regarding Linguistic Diversity As A Professional Responsibility, Darren C. Gordon
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This research seeks to understand the beliefs of recent second language teacher education (SLTE) program graduates concerning the relationship between the English language teaching (ELT) profession and linguistic diversity. This relationship is explored within the context of professional responsibilities, and, more specifically, whether research participants consider ELT to have a professional responsibility to sustain linguistic diversity. Recent SLTE graduates comprise one sector of ELT from which to gauge the degree to which a professional responsibility is embraced within ELT endeavors to sustain linguistic diversity, in addition to the central aim of increasing the language proficiency of English learners. Any development …

Measuring What Matters: Exploring Student Motivations To Inform International Student Recruitment, Rebecca Lubitz
Capstone Collection
Over the last decade, international students in the United States have surpassed the one million mark (Institute of International Education [IIE], 2016(a). Research found here highlights the goals and motivations of this growing constituency and examines factors that influence international students to choose educational experiences in the United States.
Two online surveys were distributed, one to international recruitment agents that work for UC Berkeley Extension, and another to international students. The paper examines survey responses along with existing research to offer data-driven theories on how international educators might more effectively approach student recruitment and program design. The research concluded that …

The Semantics Of The Preposition Khɔ̌Ɔŋ In Thai(ความหมายของคำว่า ของ ในฐานะคำบุพบทในภาษาไทย), Sorn Abngern, Kingkarn Thepkanjana
Journal of Letters
It is known among Thai language users that the preposition khɔ̌ɔŋin Thai is used to express possessive relations between two entities. The concept that readily comes to mind when the language users think about "possession" is ownership. However, there are other types of relations subsumed under linguistic possession expressed by the preposition khɔ̌ɔŋ. The purpose of thispaper is, therefore, to identify the possible semantic relations between possessed nouns and possessor noun phrases in nominal constructions with the preposition khɔ̌ɔŋin Thai. The 2,700data were collected from the Thai National Corpus. It was found that the semantic relations expressed by the possessive …

Journal of Letters
Benefaction and benefactive construction have received much attention in linguistic study. However, there is little research conducted onbenefactive construction in Thai. This current research paper therefore has thesespecific purposes: to investigate and compare the syntactic as well as semantic properties of two benefactive markers, namely 'phuea'and 'hai' in Thai, and to analyze factorscontributing to these differences. The researcherscollected data from the Thai National Corpus (TNC) under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn. The study revealed that although similar in marking beneficiary, 'phuea'and 'hai'were both syntactically and semantically different. The two markers were syntactically different in the three following …

Prospective English Teachers Learn To Respond To Student Writing Through The Student Writing Archive Project (Swap), Michael Sherry
Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
Reading teachers' feedback positioned PSETs as students, evoking recollections about receiving teacher feedback, while writing their own feedback positioned them as teachers, evoking visions of what a writing teacher must do/be to claim authority in the classroom. [...]in my experience as an English teacher educator, I have noticed that mentor teachers tend to reserve this work for themselves rather than share it with their preservice mentees. [...]during their student-teaching internships, preservice secondary English teachers (PSETs) often have few opportunities to practice strategies for responding to students' writing. At my institution, as at others, it is not until the end of …
How “Come Unto Me” Fits Into The Nephite Gospel, Noel B. Reynolds
How “Come Unto Me” Fits Into The Nephite Gospel, Noel B. Reynolds
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Over the last several decades, Latter-day Saints have learned to rely primarily on the Book of Mormon for basic and extended explanations of the gospel of Jesus Christ. While several of its authoritative passages provide comprehensive definitions of the gospel, these are not matched with comparable passages in the New Testament or in the revelations received by Joseph Smith. In this article I will extend previous work with an analysis of six brief passages in which Mormon and Moroni record short statements of the gospel by Jesus Christ—all of which employ exactly the same distinctive rhetorical pattern and terminology. But …

Book Review: Talking Conflict: The Loaded Language Of Genocide, Political Violence, Terrorism, And Warfare, Jennifer A. Bartlett
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The language used to describe conflict situations, whether military, political, or personal, has the potential to help resolve or escalate. Terms such as “collateral damage,” “ethnic cleansing,” and “final solution” often refer to historical events, but can also be used to condemn or endorse particular points of view in political speeches, the media, and local debate. Euphemisms, oxymorons, propaganda, jargon: all come into play. The nuanced and powerful rhetoric of conflict is the topic of Talking Conflict, an interesting and wide-ranging encyclopedia discussing the impact of linguistics, political science, journalism, and other fields on the language of conflict.

The Impact Of Changing Toefl Cut-Scores On University Admissions, Laura Michelle Decker
Theses and Dissertations
As the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is often used as a determiner for university admissions, this study observes the effect on the international student population at a large private university through the examination of the international student admissions data including TOEFL and first-year GPA from 2005-2015. With the anonymous data of 9,837 students, researchers analyzed the result of a cut-score change at the university. Results indicated that the number of international students decreased at the university. As expected, the TOEFL data revealed a normal distribution for the overall (combined) score and subsection scores, while the GPA …
Selective Tactile Attention Under Auditory Perceptual Load, Stephanie C. Bowar
Selective Tactile Attention Under Auditory Perceptual Load, Stephanie C. Bowar
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Previous research has demonstrated that detection of certain stimuli can be increased or decreased by a manipulation of attentional load during a target task. While much of this research focuses on sensory attention, there is some debate regarding whether the effect can be seen across sensory modalities (Kahneman, 1973), or only within the same sensory modality (Wickens, 1980). Additionally, it is unclear whether the effect can be applied to audition. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether irrelevant tactile distractors would be ignored or detected under various levels of auditory stimulation (‘load’). It was predicted that vibrotactile …

The primary goal of this study was to specify age-related improvements in young children’s use of the complex spatial terms between and middle in response to prompting and overhearing supports. Three- to 5-year-old children described the location of a mouse hidden between two furniture items in a dollhouse. Three prompting conditions (Between Directive, Middle Directive, Nondirective) were compared with two overhearing conditions (Overhearing Between, Overhearing Middle). Children’s use of between and middle was much more frequent in response to directive prompting than in response to nondirective prompting or overhearing. Only 4-5-year-old children showed some evidence of using middle in response …
