Teaching Academic Language And Prosody Through Content-Related Collocations, Nell Duffy Hernandez Jul 2017

Teaching Academic Language And Prosody Through Content-Related Collocations, Nell Duffy Hernandez

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

My research seeks to answer the questions How can students gauge their own prosody of targeted collocations?, What feedback and strategies can content teachers use to aid students? and Can a holistic rubric aid students’ learning to produce academic collocations?. To answer these questions I designed a study given to six sixth grade level four and five English language learners (ELs). Eight academic collocations were chosen from the students’ social studies textbook as the targeted language. The research examined the ELs’ language use using a holistic speaking and writing rubric designed for teacher assessment and a student self-monitoring sheet. The …

Multimodal Pedagogical Approaches To Public Writing: Digital Media Advocacy And Mundane Texts, Sarah Warren-Riley, Elise Verzosa Hurley Jul 2017

Multimodal Pedagogical Approaches To Public Writing: Digital Media Advocacy And Mundane Texts, Sarah Warren-Riley, Elise Verzosa Hurley

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

With the proliferation of digital media and other forms of technologically mediated communication, this article argues that critical multimodal pedagogical approaches to public writing—particularly through interrogating mundane, everyday texts—have the potential to engage students with advocacy and its role in shaping public discourse. In this article, we propose a pedagogy that views multimodal composition as advocacy. Because all texts are embedded with advocacy, encouraging students to recognize their own advocacy practices, and teaching them to carefully approach how they construct texts, we argue, may better prepare our students to be more social-justice minded public writers and rhetors in the future.

Measuring The Effectiveness Of Critical Literacy As An Instructional Method, Edward Lehner, Kaemanje Thomas, Jean Shaddai, Toni Hernen

Publications and Research

This paper reports the results of a quasi-experiment investigating the efficacy of using critical literacy as an instructional method. Using a quantitative comparison method, critical literacy is the study’s treatment. The treatment measures the final exam scores of linguistically diverse urban community college students enrolled in college developmental reading courses against 13 other statistically similar classes. The primary data are the results of a standardized final exam. This quasi-experimental study demonstrates the effectiveness of a critical literacy model when employed in a community college setting. Further, this study introduces a quantitative rationale for using critical literacy and establishes the practice …

Human Rights, Human Dignity, And The Concept Of Honour: A German Perspective, Eric Hilgendorf Jul 2017

Human Rights, Human Dignity, And The Concept Of Honour: A German Perspective, Eric Hilgendorf

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The overuse of terms like human rights, human dignity, and honour in European legal discourse risks diminishing their normative impact. Rooted in Enlightenment ideals and reactions to historical injustices, these concepts are central to German law, balancing individual rights with freedoms like expression. However, their broad application, especially in criminal law, necessitates a more precise definition to preserve their legal potency.

Split Labor Markets In International Schools: Perceptions Of Fairness Among Local-Hire Teachers, Rose Tyvand

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This quantitative study investigated perceptions of compensation fairness among local-hire teachers at international schools who worked in a split labor market. Under this model, localhire teachers perform the same basic job duties as their foreign-hire colleagues, yet receive far less compensation. The study employed survey research to examine potential relationships between such variables as: perceived compensation differentials, perception of foreign-hire contributions, teachers’ dependents attending the school on scholarship, perception of systems of communication and promotion, perception of compensation fairness, and willingness to support and collaborate with foreign hire teachers. 86 local-hire teachers from 7 international schools responded to online questions …

Corporate Social Responsibility In Sports: Efforts And Communication, Daniel Erickson Jul 2017

Corporate Social Responsibility In Sports: Efforts And Communication, Daniel Erickson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has always been integral to sports organizations and is increasing rapidly in popularity. However, scholars have found that there is no true definition of CSR that describes what it is, whom it should help, and how it should be communicated to stakeholders. This thesis examines the CSR initiatives of four major U.S. sports leagues and their teams, as well as how these initiatives are communicated to fans and other stakeholders through the websites associated with these organizations. This study found these organizations make CSR information readily accessible to their stakeholders and participate in …

Utility Of Feedback Given By Students During Courses, Michael Alton Atkisson

Theses and Dissertations

This two-article dissertation summarizes the end-of-course survey and formative feedback literatures, as well as proposes actionability as a useful construct in the analysis of feedback from students captured in real-time during their courses. The present inquiry grew out of my work as the founder of DropThought Education, a Division of DropThought. DropThought Education was a student feedback system that helped instructional designers, instructors, and educational systems to use feedback from students to improve learning and student experience. To find out whether the DropThought style of feedback was more effective than other forms of capturing and analyzing student feedback, I needed …

Comparing The Awl And Avl In Textbooks From An Intensive English Program, Michelle Morgan Hernandez Jul 2017

Comparing The Awl And Avl In Textbooks From An Intensive English Program, Michelle Morgan Hernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Academic vocabulary is an important determiner of academic success for both native and non-native speakers of English (Corson, 1997; Gardner, 2013; Hsueh-chao & Nation, 2000). In an attempt to address this need, Coxhead (2000) developed the Academic Word List (AWL)—a list of words common across a range of academic disciplines; however, Gardner & Davies (2014) identified potential limitations in the AWL and have more recently produced their own list of core academic vocabulary—the Academic Vocabulary List (AVL). This study compares the occurrences of the AWL and AVL word families in an intensive English program (IEP) corpus of 50 texts to …

"Goin' To Hell In A Handbasket": The Yeatsian Apocalypse And No Country For Old Men, Connor Race Davis Jul 2017

"Goin' To Hell In A Handbasket": The Yeatsian Apocalypse And No Country For Old Men, Connor Race Davis

Theses and Dissertations

On its surface, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men appears to be a thoroughly grim and even fatalistic novel, but read in conjunction with W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming"—a work with which the novel has a number of intertextual connection—it becomes clear that there is a distinct optimism at the heart of the novel. Approaching McCarthy's novel as an intertext with Yeats' poem illuminates an apparent critique of eschatological panic present in No Country for Old Men, provided mainly through Sheriff Bell's reflections on the state of society.

Could The United States Reinstitute An Official Torture Policy?, Adam D. Jacobson Jul 2017

Could The United States Reinstitute An Official Torture Policy?, Adam D. Jacobson

Journal of Strategic Security

In 2015, the United States passed legislation that reaffirmed its ban on using torture and abusive techniques in national security interrogations. However, the Republican president-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly promised to revive torture as official policy, and the idea of torturing suspected terrorists is popular with the American public. Given these facts, what are the vulnerabilities within the current prohibition that makes a return to an official torture policy possible? This paper examines the weaknesses within each branch of government and other factors that could contribute to making a return to official torture by the United States more likely. It …

Evidentiality, Questions And The Reflection Principle In Tibetan: What Do Children Learn When They Learn About Evidentiality?, Jill De Villiers, Jay L. Garfield Jul 2017

Evidentiality, Questions And The Reflection Principle In Tibetan: What Do Children Learn When They Learn About Evidentiality?, Jill De Villiers, Jay L. Garfield

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Evidentials fall in the borderland between traditional semantics and pragmatics. A situation semantics for evidentials helps to explain their puzzling developmental pathway in children. Drawing on our work in Tibetan, we argue that there is no necessity for a child to master Theory of Mind, that is, awareness of others' mental states, in order to make or to understand assertions that carry evidential force. The meaning of evidentials does not make reference to states of knowledge of persons, but rather encodes relations between discourse, evidence and evaluation situations. On the other hand, when a Tibetan speaker asks a question, the …

In emergency situations, it is important that information be communicated quickly, concisely, and efficiently. Breakdowns can occur when the receiver of the emergency call does not fully understand the information that the person is sending. The purpose of this paper is to present a new model for enhancing communication between the sender and receiver in emergency situations. The Universal Severity of Emergency Report (USER) is a model designed to be used in emergency situations and convey more information about the current state of the person declaring the emergency than is currently offered by emergency communication channels. USER provides three key …
