Fractal Aesthetics In Architecture, Wolfgang E. Lorenz, Jan Andres, Georg Franck Jul 2017

Fractal Aesthetics In Architecture, Wolfgang E. Lorenz, Jan Andres, Georg Franck

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper deals with fractal aesthetics and proposes a new fractal analysis method for the perceptual study of architecture. The authors believe in the universality of formulas and aim to complement the architectural description in terms of proportion. Although a well established fractal analysis method to describe the complexity of facades across different scales already exists, box-counting is imprecise because of too many influences coming along with the method itself. The authors consider the self-similarity as an important part of aesthetic quality in architecture. This is due to the fact that it describes a concept of consistency that holds everything …

Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson Jul 2017

Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson

Dissertations

The widespread and popular use of social media and social networking applications offer a promising opportunity for gaining knowledge and insights regarding population health conditions thanks to the diversity and abundance of online user-generated information (UGHI) relating to healthcare and well-being. However, users on social media and social networking sites often do not supply their complete demographic information, which greatly undermines the value of the aforementioned information for health 2.0 research, e.g., for discerning disparities across population groups in certain health conditions. To recover the missing user demographic information, existing methods observe a limited scope of user behaviors, such as …

Investigation Of Factors Relating To The Web-Based Presentation Of Policy And Information On Campus Firearm Policy And Smoking Policy, Veronica F. Mcgowan Jul 2017

Investigation Of Factors Relating To The Web-Based Presentation Of Policy And Information On Campus Firearm Policy And Smoking Policy, Veronica F. Mcgowan

Administrative Issues Journal

In order to explore themes of privilege in regard to policy availability, language accessibility, and underlying bias, policies related to two topics of interest to higher education campus visitors, campus firearm carry policy and smoking policy, are explored to determine how Web-based information is presented to various audiences. Implications of policy accessibility are compelling; language barriers can adversely affect access to campus events and educational services. Representative samples of policies of five states that allow some form of open or concealed campus firearm carry were studied to determine possible factors of importance. Representative samples of two additional states in the …

Reflective Practice Series: The Age Of Synthetic Instruction, Martin W. Sivula

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

Methods of teaching, instruction, and training have been transformed due to advances Information Technology and Communication (ICT). People from all over the globe via ICT can learn just about anything, anytime, and anywhere provided they have basic linguistic knowledge and skills in their native language and an Internet connection. Using these ICT methods, one could question whether deep knowledge, comprehension, and understanding of a given content domain has occurred? More importantly, does instructor personality and their teaching traits make a difference to students in this modality? Quite possibly, the new learner’s ultimate outcome might be: the most convenient and cost …

Performance Analysis Of Ibpso And Bfpa Based Feature Selection Techniques For Improving Classification Accuracy In Review Spam Detection, Sp. Rajamohana, K. Umamaheswari, B. Abirami

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Objectives: Feature Selection is a important technique to reduce the quantity of features in various application domains where the data set includes thousands of features in it. The main objective of this study is to choose BFPA for feature selection to obtain better fitness function. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Improved Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (iBPSO) approach is used for selecting the subset from the dataset and providing the better fitness values. Here, iBPSO used to obtain the feature subset and its performance is compared with BFPA. Na¨ıve Bayes classifier is used to improve the classification accuracy. Findings:The experimental results shows that BFPA …

Beyond The Text: Justice Scalia's Originalism In Practice, Michael D. Ramsey Jul 2017

Beyond The Text: Justice Scalia's Originalism In Practice, Michael D. Ramsey

Notre Dame Law Review

This Essay considers the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s contributions to constitutional originalism as a practical methodology. Justice Scalia was the leading judicial theorist and advocate of originalism of his era, and his legacy has widely been assessed in those terms. He was also, along with Justice Clarence Thomas, the leading judicial practitioner of originalism of his era. This latter role has received less comprehensive attention. Although there are of course countless articles analyzing and critiquing his originalist methodology in particular cases, or seeking to demonstrate that certain of his opinions are inconsistent with his theoretical commitments, relatively few articles have …

Did Justice Scalia Have A Theory Of Interpretation?, Gary Lawson Jul 2017

Did Justice Scalia Have A Theory Of Interpretation?, Gary Lawson

Notre Dame Law Review

It seems beyond bizarre to ask whether Justice Scalia had a theory of textual interpretation. If he did not have such a theory, what were he and his critics talking about for the past three decades? The answer is that they were talking about part of a theory of textual interpretation but not an actual, complete theory. A complete theory of textual interpretation must prescribe principles of admissibility (what counts towards meaning), significance (how much does the admissible evidence count), standards of proof (how much evidence do you need for a justified conclusion), burdens of proof (does inertia lie with …

A Novel Iterative Numerical Algorithm For The Solutions Of Systems Of Fuzzy Initial Value Problems, Omar Abu Arqub, Shaher Momani, Saleh Al-Mezel, Marwan Kutbi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Behaviors of many dynamic systems with uncertainty can be modelled effectively by systems of fuzzy differential equations. In this paper, we develop new numerical iterative method for solving systems of fuzzy initial value problems based on the reproducing kernel theory under the assumption of Hukuhara differentiability. The exact and approximate solutions are given with series form in terms of their parametric form, where two smooth reproducing kernel functions are used throughout the evolution of the algorithm to obtain the required nodal values. Furthermore, error estimation is proved in order to capture the behavior of fuzzy solutions. Applicability, potentiality, and efficiency …

Žumberak: A Sixteenth-Century Refugee Settlement Zone, Nicholas J. Miller Jul 2017

Žumberak: A Sixteenth-Century Refugee Settlement Zone, Nicholas J. Miller

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the movement of Orthodox Christian refugees from Bosnia to the Habsburg Monarchy in the 1530s and their settlement in a district called Žumberak. The movement of these Uskoks has never been examined in the context of refugee studies. This study of a refugee movement and settlement over a five-century period offers the possibility of reaching a better understanding of the long-term outcome of refugee movements. Ultimately, this article suggests that the refugees affected the land they settled as much as the settlement zone affected them, and that, in this case, the refugees were able to define their …

Between Words And Deeds: Diverse Voices And The Communicative Constitution Of Diversity, Scott E. Branton Ii Jul 2017

Between Words And Deeds: Diverse Voices And The Communicative Constitution Of Diversity, Scott E. Branton Ii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

While diversity is widely discussed throughout management literature, the impact of diversity management on diverse organizational members remains exceedingly sparse. Furthermore, the present case study uses a communication centered approach to address how diverse faculty member’s organizational experiences with diversity align with an academic institution’s publicly stated values of diversity. Through a critical interpretive lens, 15 semi-structured, in-depth interviews of diverse faculty members were conducted at a medium sized, Southern university (“Southern U”). Findings suggested that contradictions were heavily embedded into Southern U’s diversity communication resulting in a host of paradoxical tensions for diverse faculty members. This study explored the …

Discovering Explanatory Models To Identify Relevant Tweets On Zika, Roopteja Muppalla, Michele Miller, Tanvi Banerjee, William L. Romine

Kno.e.sis Publications

Zika virus has caught the worlds attention, and has led people to share their opinions and concerns on social media like Twitter. Using text-based features, extracted with the help of Parts of Speech (POS) taggers and N-gram, a classifier was built to detect Zika related tweets from Twitter. With a simple logistic classifier, the system was successful in detecting Zika related tweets from Twitter with a 92% accuracy. Moreover, key features were identified that provide deeper insights on the content of tweets relevant to Zika. This system can be leveraged by domain experts to perform sentiment analysis, and understand the …
