Load Model Verification, Validation And Calibration Framework By Statistical Analysis On Field Data, Xiangqing Jiao, Yuan Liao, Thai Nguyen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Accurate load models are critical for power system analysis and operation. A large amount of research work has been done on load modeling. Most of the existing research focuses on developing load models, while little has been done on developing formal load model verification and validation (V&V) methodologies or procedures. Most of the existing load model validation is based on qualitative rather than quantitative analysis. In addition, not all aspects of model V&V problem have been addressed by the existing approaches. To complement the existing methods, this paper proposes a novel load model verification and validation framework that can systematically …

Does Truth Promote Peace? Toward A Greater Understanding Of Truth Commissions As Transitional Justice Mechanisms In Post-Conflict Countries, Eric Royer Nov 2017

Does Truth Promote Peace? Toward A Greater Understanding Of Truth Commissions As Transitional Justice Mechanisms In Post-Conflict Countries, Eric Royer

Dissertations

This study explores the societal effects of transitional justice mechanisms in post-conflict countries. In particular, an emphasis is placed on exploring whether truth commissions, which are suggested in virtually all post-conflict situations today, exhibit a positive or negative effect on key indicators, such as democracy, human rights, economic development, and the durability of peace. Three central research questions are examined. First, do truth and reconciliation commissions “work”? In other words, are they associated with a reduction in communal violence and improvements in democratic institutions, human rights protections, and economic development? Second, must truth commissions be coupled with transitional justice mechanisms …

A Subconscious Interaction Between Fixation And Anticipatory Pursuit, Scott N. J. Watamaniuk, Japjot Bal, Stephen J. Heinen Nov 2017

A Subconscious Interaction Between Fixation And Anticipatory Pursuit, Scott N. J. Watamaniuk, Japjot Bal, Stephen J. Heinen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Ocular smooth pursuit and fixation are typically viewed as separate systems, yet there is evidence that the brainstem fixation system inhibits pursuit. Here we present behavioral evidence that the fixation system modulates pursuit behavior outside of conscious awareness. Human observers (male and female) either pursued a small spot that translated across a screen, or fixated it as it remained stationary. As shown previously, pursuit trials potentiated the oculomotor system, producing anticipatory eye velocity on the next trial before the target moved that mimicked the stimulus-driven velocity. Randomly interleaving fixation trials reduced anticipatory pursuit, suggesting that a potentiated fixation system interacted …

Gardner Ex Rel. V. Eighth Judicial Dist. Court, 133 Nev. Adv. Op. 89 (Nov. 22, 2017), Will Carter

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The alter ego doctrine applies to LLCs and corporations, such that creditors may reach manager’s assets. The Court held that an LLC does not protect a manager or member from their own individual acts of negligence. Therefore, the Court directed the district court to vacate because, “the varieties of fraud and injustice that the alter ego doctrine was designed to redress can be equally exploited through limited liability companies.”

Evolution Of The Pore Size Distribution In Sheared Binary Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev Nov 2017

Evolution Of The Pore Size Distribution In Sheared Binary Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate mechanical properties and porous structure of binary glasses subjected to steady shear. The model vitreous systems were prepared via thermal quench at constant volume to a temperature well below the glass transition. The quiescent samples are characterized by a relatively narrow pore size distribution whose mean size is larger at lower glass densities. We find that in the linear regime of deformation, the shear modulus is a strong function of porosity, and the individual pores become slightly stretched while their structural topology remains unaffected. By contrast, with further increasing strain, the shear …

Bassett V. Lamantia: Deciding The Scope Or Viability Of Montana’S Public Duty Doctrine, Rebecca Stursberg Nov 2017

Bassett V. Lamantia: Deciding The Scope Or Viability Of Montana’S Public Duty Doctrine, Rebecca Stursberg

Montana Law Review Online

This case bears on an ongoing debate regarding the constitutionality of Montana’s public duty doctrine. Plaintiff Robert Bassett (Bassett) sued Defendants Billings City Police Officer Paul Lamantia (Lamantia) and City of Billings (City) after Lamantia mistook Bassett for a fleeing suspect, tackled him to the ground, and tore his rotator cuff. Defendants have asserted that they are shielded from liability by the public duty doctrine. In response, Bassett has asked this Court to create an exception to the doctrine when government defendants are the direct and sole cause of a plaintiff’s injury.

Work-Related Stress And Burnout Factors Of Principals In Regional Greece: A Historical Perspective, Christos Leventis, Evangelos C. Papakitsos, Konstantinos Karakiozis, Argyrios Argyriou

Journal of Research Initiatives

Work-related stress and burnout is a reality in modern society, because the lack of time and the high work demands seem increasingly intensified. Thus, the study of working conditions and the factors that affect the physical and mental health becomes even more imperative. Professions that are particularly stressful are those where there is daily contact with people, for example, doctors, nurses, social workers, or school leaders. Besides administrative and official duties, modern principals perform additional functions such as the organization and management of schools, the coordination of people who are involved in the teaching and operational process and they intervene …

Nationstar Mortg., Llc V. Saticoy Bay Llc Series 2227 Shadow Canyon, 133 Nev. Adv. Op. 409 (Nov. 22, 2017), Connor Saphire

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court considered an appeal from a district court order granting summary judgment. In its holding, the Court concluded that it would not invalidate a foreclosure sale based on a low sales price alone. The commercial reasonableness standard established by Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (U.C.C.) does not apply to Homeowner’s Association (HOA) foreclosures because they involve real property sales. Rather, there must be a showing of “fraud, unfairness, or oppression” on behalf of the seller.

Multilingualism And Academic Writing: A Match Made In Heaven Or A Disastrous Combination?, Roshni Paul, Ian Mcdonald

Journal of Research Initiatives

There has long been a tradition of international students studying in the United Kingdom. Despite a dip in the most recently published statistics, Indian students continue to make up a high proportion of UK’s international student population. The majority of Indian students are multilingual and this raises potential problems for them with regards to academic writing, such as grammar, structuring and vocabulary. This article presents a largely empirical study which examines the experiences of, and issues faced by, seven postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment at Birmingham City University. Samples of academic writing …

Using Direct Reading Instruction To Increase The Reading Achievement Of Students With Disabilities: A Case Study, Marquis Grant Nov 2017

Using Direct Reading Instruction To Increase The Reading Achievement Of Students With Disabilities: A Case Study, Marquis Grant

Journal of Research Initiatives

Reading was one of the areas targeted by most states for assessment because it not only is a critical area in academics, but also an area where most students were not showing gains. The National Education Association (NEA, 2004) prescribed reading as the catalyst for both learning and achievement. Reading difficulties typically being in the primary grades and become more profound by the time a child reaches high school (Fisher & Frey, 2007). However, questions regarding how exactly to formulate, deliver, sustain, and manage secondary-level interventions remain to be addressed, as do issues of validation, school resources, and cost (Kamps …

Measurement Of The Multi-Tev Neutrino Interaction Cross-Section With Icecube Using Earth Absorption, Karen Andeen, The Icecube Collaboration Nov 2017

Measurement Of The Multi-Tev Neutrino Interaction Cross-Section With Icecube Using Earth Absorption, Karen Andeen, The Icecube Collaboration

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Neutrinos interact only very weakly, so they are extremely penetrating. The theoretical neutrino–nucleon interaction cross-section, however, increases with increasing neutrino energy, and neutrinos with energies above 40 teraelectronvolts (TeV) are expected to be absorbed as they pass through the Earth. Experimentally, the cross-section has been determined only at the relatively low energies (below 0.4 TeV) that are available at neutrino beams from accelerators1,2. Here we report a measurement of neutrino absorption by the Earth using a sample of 10,784 energetic upward-going neutrino-induced muons. The flux of high-energy neutrinos transiting long paths through the Earth is attenuated compared to …

Integrated Remote Sensing And Gis For Modeling Economic Rehabilitation Development Of Ex-Mine Sites, Junaidi Junaidi, Goh Eric K.H.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The potential environmental impacts of mining, increasing environmental legislation and public awareness have received increased attention world-wide in the last two decades. The focus of concern by the industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public is the systematic rehabilitation of ex-mine sites to improve the quality at site for potential future commercial land use. The minerals extracted from these mine/quarry sites are essential in the construction, semiconductor, high-technology, ceramic and other manufacturing sectors for further industrial development. However, efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of mine sites for site rehabilitation are required in maintaining the expected standards …

Temporo-Spectral Coherent Structure Of Turbulence And Pressure Using Fourier And Wavelet Transforms, Le Thai-Hoa, Nguyen Dong-Anh Nov 2017

Temporo-Spectral Coherent Structure Of Turbulence And Pressure Using Fourier And Wavelet Transforms, Le Thai-Hoa, Nguyen Dong-Anh

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Studying the spatial distribution in coherent fields such as turbulent and turbulent-induced force ones is important to model and evaluate turbulent-induced forces and response of structures on the turbulent flows. Turbulent field-based coherent function is commonly used for the spatial distribution characteristic of induced forces in the frequency domain. This paper will focus to study spectral coherent structure of turbulence and forces in not only the frequency domain using conventional Fourier transform-based coherence, but also temporo-spectral coherent one in the time-frequency plane thanks to wavelet transform-based coherence for more understanding of the turbulence and force coherences and their spatial distributions. …

Fault Location On A Distribution Feeder Using Fault Generated High Frequency Current Signatures, Hizam Hashim, Crossley P.A. Nov 2017

Fault Location On A Distribution Feeder Using Fault Generated High Frequency Current Signatures, Hizam Hashim, Crossley P.A.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This paper describes how the fault generated travelling waves detected in the current signals at a single location on a distribution feeder can be used for fault location. The method identifies the fault section and the probable location of the fault by comparing the relative distance of each “peak” in the high frequency current signals to the known reflection points in the distribution feeder. The probable fault location is then used within a transient power system simulator that models the actual network. The resulting simulated current waveforms are then cross-correlated against the original signal. If the estimated fault location is …

Deformation Of Wood In Compression During Moisture Movement, Hamdan S., Osman M.S., Chew M.Y. Nov 2017

Deformation Of Wood In Compression During Moisture Movement, Hamdan S., Osman M.S., Chew M.Y.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This work presents the phenomenon of mechano-sorptive strain in the deformation of wood during moisture content (MC) changes. A series of experiments were designed to demonstrate the greatly enhanced deformation due to the mechano-sorptive effect. The purpose of this work is to show the magnitude of mechano-sorptive creep compared to the ordinary viscoelastic creep with applied compressive load. In order to do this, several conditions were induced. They were the moisture movement with MC change, moisture movement without MC change and conditions without moisture movement. Several apparatus were assembled to produce the desired conditions. Special care is taken to make …

Computation Of Bearing Capacity Factor Nq –Terzaghi And Prandtl Mechanism, Dewaikar D.M., Mohapatro B.G., Sawant V.A., Chore H.S.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The unique values of the bearing capacity factors, Nq are obtained in respect of failure mechanisms suggested by Terzaghi and Prandtl using limit equilibrium approach. In this paper an attempt has been made to present the analysis integrating the Kotter’s equation with Terzaghi’s and Prandtl’s mechanisms using limit equilibrium conditions. The analysis presented here with some modifications in the exiting analyses computes the bearing capacity factor – Nq , the expressions of which are similar to the one given by Terzaghi [10] and Reissner [7] who had extended the pioneering work initiated by Prandtl [6]. The analysis reported here successfully …

Chitinase 42 kDa produced by Trichoderma harzianum has been proven as a prime compound to be excreted onto the hyphae of the pathogen causing localised cell wall lysis at the point of interaction. This finally initiate the process of the host cell becomes empty of cytoplasm, disintegrates and shows a rapid collapse. This study investigates the existence of N-glycan linked mannose in chitinase 42 kDa produced by the Malaysian T. harzianum strain BIO10671. The chitinase 42 kDa from T. harzianum BIO10671 was initially purified using anion exchange chromatography prior to a series of experiments such as immunoblotting against the chitinase …

Rapid Detection Of -Thalassemia Mutations In Thailand Using Multiplex Arms, Shimbhu D., Mirasena S., Sanguansermsri M., Sanguansermsri T. Nov 2017

Rapid Detection Of -Thalassemia Mutations In Thailand Using Multiplex Arms, Shimbhu D., Mirasena S., Sanguansermsri M., Sanguansermsri T.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The number of mutations underlining b-thalassemia generate a wide variety of different clinical phenotypes. An understanding of the genotype is important for medical personnel in order to provide proper counseling to patients and their families. Characterization of these mutations should aid the planning of a prenatal diagnosis program for bthalassemia. The heterogeneity of the mutations makes it difficult and time consuming to identify the mutation in some individuals. We developed a single-tube multiplex amplification refractory mutation system (multiplex ARMS) to identify common ethnic- specific b-thalassemia mutations. Confirmation of multiplex ARMS results was carried out using direct sequencing. Three thousand three …
