Studies On A Novel Recombinant Lipase A From Bacillus Subtilis Fs2, Nguyet Phung Thu, Thanh Nguyen Hong, Hai Truong Nam, Janson Jan-Christer

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

A strain of Bacillus subtilis FS2 isolated from a traditional fish source in Vietnam has been shown to produce an enzyme possessing both a gelatinase and a lipase A (LipA) activity when tested on agar plates containing 0.1% tributyrin and 0.3% gelatine. A gene encoding LipA was isolated and expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3). The enzyme has got an apparent Mr of 24 kDa, a pI of 9.2 and was purified to electrophoretical homogeneity by affinity chromatography. Both the lipase and the gelatinase showed optimum activity at pH 10 and at 30 0 C, with highest activity in the …

Potassium Permanganate As Oxidant In The Cod Test For Saline Water Samples, Goh Chin-Ping, Lim Poh-Eng Nov 2017

Potassium Permanganate As Oxidant In The Cod Test For Saline Water Samples, Goh Chin-Ping, Lim Poh-Eng

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying potassium permanganate (KMnO4) as the oxidant in the COD test for highly saline water samples. Initially, the COD values of various glucose standard solutions were determined by three methods, namely the standard closed reflux dichromate (CODCr), the acidic permanganate (CODMn) and the alkaline permanganate (CODOH) methods. The results showed that at COD values lower than 20 mg/L, the standard dichromate method was not applicable due to its poor precision (RSD > 10%). The CODOH method was less effective compared to the CODMn method as the recoveries were 0.71 and …

Soil-Structure Interaction Analyses Of Pile Supported Building Frame, Chore H.S., Ingle R.K. Nov 2017

Soil-Structure Interaction Analyses Of Pile Supported Building Frame, Chore H.S., Ingle R.K.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The effect of the soil-structure interaction on the simple single storeyed and two bayed space frame resting on pile group of two piles with flexible cap is examined in this paper by resorting to more rational approach and realistic assumptions. Initially, 3-D FEA is carried out independently for the frame on the premised of fixed column bases. Later, pile foundation is worked out separately. The stiffness so obtained for foundation is used in the interactive analysis of frame to quantify the effect of soil- structure interaction on the response of the superstructure. For modeling the foundation system two approaches of …

The Misapplication Of The Lautenberg Amendment In Voisine V. United States And The Resulting Loss Of Second Amendment Protection, Cynthia M. Menta Nov 2017

The Misapplication Of The Lautenberg Amendment In Voisine V. United States And The Resulting Loss Of Second Amendment Protection, Cynthia M. Menta

Akron Law Review

Over the past two decades, Congress has enacted various laws aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence. One such law is 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(9), also known as the Lautenberg Amendment, which prohibits any person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from possessing a firearm. However, because the Second Amendment has been deemed a fundamental right by the Supreme Court, such a restriction on firearms possession is only permissible if it serves a compelling government interest. Unfortunately, since the Lautenberg Amendment was enacted in 1996, the courts have struggled to interpret its ambiguous terms, which has made it …

Third Generation Discrimination: The Ripple Effects Of Gender Bias In The Workplace, Catherine Ross Dunham Nov 2017

Third Generation Discrimination: The Ripple Effects Of Gender Bias In The Workplace, Catherine Ross Dunham

Akron Law Review

This Article joins together threads of ongoing conversations regarding implicit bias and gender discrimination. The Article builds on the groundbreaking work of Susan Sturm of Columbia University who developed the theory of second generation gender discrimination, Title VII gender discrimination based on implicit bias, in her article Second Generation Employment Discrimination: A Structural Approach, 101 Colum. L. Rev. 458 (2001). In her article, Sturm developed a theory to pursue Title VII claims where the employment practice at issue is facially-neutral, but the effect of the policy in a bias-based, homogeneous work environment is discriminatory. Since 2001, several high profile …

The Influence Of Equitable Treatment On Latina/O High School Students’ College Aspirations, Amanda Taggart, Jaimi Paschal

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study examined the influence of equitable treatment on Latina/o students’ college aspirations. Logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with Latina/o high school students’ aspirations to attend college within the context of theory concerning the college search, choice, and enrollment processes. Data were drawn from a nationally representative sample of Latina/o students in the ELS:2002 dataset. Results indicated that Latina/o students were more likely to aspire to attend college if they perceived equitable treatment for different groups of students during high school.

Modular Mechanistic Networks: On Bridging Mechanistic And Phenomenological Models With Deep Neural Networks In Natural Language Processing, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher Nov 2017

Modular Mechanistic Networks: On Bridging Mechanistic And Phenomenological Models With Deep Neural Networks In Natural Language Processing, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher

Books/Book chapters

Natural language processing (NLP) can be done using either top-down (theory driven) and bottom-up (data driven) approaches, which we call mechanistic and phenomenological respectively. The approaches are frequently considered to stand in opposition to each other. Examining some recent approaches in deep learning we argue that deep neural networks incorporate both perspectives and, furthermore, that leveraging this aspect of deep learning may help in solving complex problems within language technology, such as modelling language and perception in the domain of spatial cognition.

Not So Fast--Risks Related To The Use Of A "Saft" For Token Sales, Aaron Wright, Patrick Berarducci, Matthew Corva, Lewis Cohen, Rachel Epstein, Joyce Lai, Joshua Ashley Klayman, Gabe Shapiro, Lee Schneider, Jonathan Rohr

Blockchain Project Reports

On October 2, 2017, Cooley LLP and Protocol Labs released a whitepaper entitled “The SAFT Project: Toward a Compliant Token Sale Framework” (the “Whitepaper”), purporting to develop “a new, compliant framework” for engaging in the sale of blockchain-based tokens. The Whitepaper acknowledged that the framework has limitations, and invited a conversation within the blockchain and legal community. In that spirit, the below report analyzes the framework proposed in the Whitepaper and highlights a number of risks related to the use of a Simple Agreement for Future Tokens (a “SAFT”) for token sales.

As explained below, while the framework proposed in …

The tunneling channel of a field effect transistor comprising a plurality of tunneling elements contacting a channel substrate. Applying a source-drain voltage of greater than a turn-on voltage produces a source-drain current of greater than about 10 pA. Applying a source-drain voltage of less than a turn-on voltage produces a source-drain current of less than about 10 pA. The turn-on voltage at room temperature is between about 0.1V and about 40V.

Intimate Partner Violence Impact Panels For Batterer Intervention: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation Of A Restorative Justice Process, Kate Louise Sackett Nov 2017

Intimate Partner Violence Impact Panels For Batterer Intervention: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation Of A Restorative Justice Process, Kate Louise Sackett

Dissertations and Theses

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an extremely prevalent and concerning social issue, with limited current intervention and prevention strategies. Batterer intervention programs (BIPs) have demonstrated some small effects of programs in reducing offender recidivism, however there is a growing understanding that not all offenders respond similarly to batterer intervention and the problem of IPV persists. Restorative justice programs including impact panels may be an important addition to BIPs, but research is extremely limited on impact panel effectiveness and whether panels are appropriate for IPV or pose additional safety risks to survivors. The current study consists of a naturalistic mixed-methods evaluation …

What Is Not Where: The Challenge Of Integrating Spatial Representations Into Deep Learning Architectures, John D. Kelleher, Simon Dobnik Nov 2017

What Is Not Where: The Challenge Of Integrating Spatial Representations Into Deep Learning Architectures, John D. Kelleher, Simon Dobnik

Books/Book chapters

This paper examines to what degree current deep learning architectures for image caption generation capture spatial lan- guage. On the basis of the evaluation of examples of generated captions from the literature we argue that systems capture what objects are in the image data but not where these objects are located: the cap- tions generated by these systems are the output of a language model conditioned on the output of an object detector that cannot capture fine-grained location information. Although language models provide useful knowledge for image captions, we argue that deep learning image captioning architectures should also model geometric …

Ablation Of An Ovarian Tumor Family Deubiquitinase Exposes The Underlying Regulation Governing The Plasticity Of Cell Cycle Progression In Toxoplasma Gondii, Animesh Dhara, Rodrigo De Paula Baptista, Jessica C. Kissinger, Ernest Charles Snow, Anthony P. Sinai Nov 2017

Ablation Of An Ovarian Tumor Family Deubiquitinase Exposes The Underlying Regulation Governing The Plasticity Of Cell Cycle Progression In Toxoplasma Gondii, Animesh Dhara, Rodrigo De Paula Baptista, Jessica C. Kissinger, Ernest Charles Snow, Anthony P. Sinai

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The Toxoplasma genome encodes the capacity for distinct architectures underlying cell cycle progression in a life cycle stage-dependent manner. Replication in intermediate hosts occurs by endodyogeny, whereas a hybrid of schizogony and endopolygeny occurs in the gut of the definitive feline host. Here, we characterize the consequence of the loss of a cell cycle-regulated ovarian tumor (OTU family) deubiquitinase, OTUD3A of Toxoplasma gondii (TgOTUD3A; TGGT1_258780), in T. gondii tachyzoites. Rather than the mutation being detrimental, mutant parasites exhibited a fitness advantage, outcompeting the wild type. This phenotype was due to roughly one-third of TgOTUD3A-knockout (TgOTUD3A-KO) tachyzoites exhibiting deviations from endodyogeny …

Center for Environmental and Systems Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Delivering isotopic tracers for metabolic studies in rodents without overt stress is challenging. Current methods achieve low label enrichment in proteins and lipids. Here, we report noninvasive introduction of 13C6-glucose via a stress-free, ad libitum liquid diet. Using NMR and ion chromatography-mass spectrometry, we quantify extensive 13C enrichment in products of glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway, nucleobases, UDP-sugars, glycogen, lipids, and proteins in mouse tissues during 12 to 48 h of 13C6-glucose feeding. Applying this approach to patient-derived lung tumor xenografts (PDTX), we show that the liver supplies glucose-derived Gln …

Evolving Through Collaboration: Standardizing Citation Instruction Across The Curriculum, Brandy R. Horne, Deborah Tritt Nov 2017

Evolving Through Collaboration: Standardizing Citation Instruction Across The Curriculum, Brandy R. Horne, Deborah Tritt

Collaborative Librarianship

To reduce inconsistencies in citation instruction across the curriculum, the Gregg-Graniteville Library at the University of South Carolina Aiken developed a model of citation support that involved the creation of citation instruction materials, the provision of citation support at the reference desk and via appointment, and the creation and delivery of citation style workshops and instruction sessions. These efforts evolved into a multi-pronged model of collaboration that involved coordination within the library, with the campus writing room, and with the teaching faculty. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of this model, which is both collaborative and …

Manipulating Data And Moving Forward: Transitioning To A Shared Cataloging Environment, Jessica Lee, Guy Frost Nov 2017

Manipulating Data And Moving Forward: Transitioning To A Shared Cataloging Environment, Jessica Lee, Guy Frost

Collaborative Librarianship

In May of 2017, the University System of Georgia (USG) finished migrating to Alma, a single, shared catalog for all its colleges and universities. Prior to migration, all the University System’s colleges and universities maintained an Integrated Library System (ILS) from Ex Libris, Voyager, which provided a virtual catalog comprising a union catalog, while each institution managed its own database. The current migration took nearly four years from early planning stages to go live. Migrating to a cloud-based shared bibliographic environment where master bibliographic records were not “owned” by anyone was a new concept for USG libraries. Valdosta State University …

Spectres Of Ambiguity In Divergent Thinking And Perceptual Switching, M Taranu, F Loesche Nov 2017

Spectres Of Ambiguity In Divergent Thinking And Perceptual Switching, M Taranu, F Loesche

School of Psychology

Divergent thinking as a creative ability and perceptual switching between different interpretations of an unchanging stimulus (known as perceptual multistability) are thought to rely on similar processes. In the current study, we investigate to what extent task instructions and inherent stimulus characteristics influence participants' responses. In the first experiment, participants were asked to give as many interpretations for six images as possible. In the second experiment, participants reported which of two possible interpretations they saw at any moment for the same line drawings. From these two experiments, we extracted measures that allow us direct comparison between tasks. Results show that …

Evaluating Mobile-Based Citizen Science In Increasing Citizen Participants In Environmental Management, Wenqi Ou Nov 2017

Evaluating Mobile-Based Citizen Science In Increasing Citizen Participants In Environmental Management, Wenqi Ou

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

Mobile-based citizen science as thriving citizen education tool increases the non-expert citizen involvement in the scientific world by encouraging the public upload nature observation to assist scientific research while learning scientific knowledge. Mobile-base citizen science as social media has potential to facilitate citizen engagement in the environmental management. Based on the conceptual framework of citizen science incorporation with environmental management, large users in the program foster the citizen involvement in the environmental management. Research here applies SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threats) analysis to evaluate mobile based citizen science regarding data management, citizen participation, and partnership. It revealed the current status …

Multicultural Competence In The Supervisory Relationship: An Inclusive Model, Carmen M. Mccallum Lmsw, Ph.D., Amy Wilson Ph.D. Nov 2017

Multicultural Competence In The Supervisory Relationship: An Inclusive Model, Carmen M. Mccallum Lmsw, Ph.D., Amy Wilson Ph.D.

NYS Child Welfare/Child Protective Services Training Institute

As the United States continues to become increasingly diverse, the number of underrepresented populations being served by child welfare agencies is also steadily increasing. Children of color comprise 33 percent of the children in the United States but represent over 55 percent of children in the child welfare system (Detlaff, 2015; Pew Commission, 2014). Therefore, in addition to being concerned about child safety, well-being and permanency, agencies must also be concerned with the cultural issues that arise when working with diverse populations (Nathaniel, Howze & Prince, 2009). Empirical evidence confirms that the race of a child and their family has …

A Study Of 15-Year Aerosol Optical Thickness And Direct Shortwave Aerosol Radiative Effect Trends Using Modis, Misr, Caliop And Ceres, Ricardo Alfaro-Contreras, Jianglong Zhang, Jeffrey S. Reid, Sundar Christopher

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

By combining Collection 6 Moderate Resolution and Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Version 22 Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aerosol products with Cloud and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) flux products, the aerosol optical thickness (AOT, at 0.55 µm) and shortwave (SW) aerosol radiative effect (SWARE) trends are studied over ocean for the near-full Terra (2000–2015) and Aqua (2002–2015) data records. Despite differences in sampling methods, regional SWARE and AOT trends are highly correlated with one another. Over global oceans, weak SWARE (cloud-free SW flux) and AOT trends of 0.5–0.6 Wm−2 (−0.5 to −0.6 Wm−2 ) and 0.002 AOT decade−1 are found …

Don't Try This At Home: The Fda's Restrictive Regulation Of Home-Testing Devices, Shelby Baird Nov 2017

Don't Try This At Home: The Fda's Restrictive Regulation Of Home-Testing Devices, Shelby Baird

Duke Law Journal

Over the past forty years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has successfully restricted consumers' access to home-testing applications based on the notion that it should protect individuals from their own reactions to test results. In the 1970s, the FDA briefly denied women access to home pregnancy tests that were identical to those used in laboratories. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it relied on concerns about consumer responses to HIV status results to justify a categorical ban on applications for HIV home-testing technology. More recently, it placed burdensome restrictions on direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing companies, such as 23andMe, …

Contracts Ex Machina, Kevin Werbach, Nicolas Cornell

Duke Law Journal

Smart contracts are self-executing digital transactions using decentralized cryptographic mechanisms for enforcement. They were theorized more than twenty years ago, but the recent development of Bitcoin and blockchain technologies has rekindled excitement about their potential among technologists and industry. Startup companies and major enterprises alike are now developing smart contract solutions for an array of markets, purporting to offer a digital bypass around traditional contract law. For legal scholars, smart contracts pose a significant question: Do smart contracts offer a superior solution to the problems that contract law addresses? In this article, we aim to understand both the potential and …
