Teen Suicide And The Outcomes Of Surviving Peers, Emily Cuddy, Janet Currie, Elisa Jácome, Lucy Manly Aug 2026

Teen Suicide And The Outcomes Of Surviving Peers, Emily Cuddy, Janet Currie, Elisa Jácome, Lucy Manly

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

By age 17, a quarter of U.S. students have experienced a peer suicide. Using linked administrative data from South Carolina and a matched difference-in-differences design, we find that exposure to a peer’s self-harm death increases the probability of a self-harm diagnosis by nearly 50% and both the incidence and frequency of mental health visits. Effects on care use and criminal behavior are concentrated among white boys, and responses diverge by prior mental health history: students without a prior diagnosis increase felony offending rather than care-seeking. Deaths from assault and transportation accidents produce no comparable rise in self-harm, consistent with contagion.

Gridded reference evapotranspiration (ETo) data are widely used for agricultural water management and remote sensing evapotranspiration (RSET) models, but biases can arise where coarse meteorological inputs fail to capture agricultural microclimates. We investigated biases in the gridMET ETo product across irrigated agricultural areas of the contiguous United States using ETo calculated from 793 agricultural weather stations, then used those stations to develop monthly correction surfaces. Results show that gridMET systematically overestimates ETo by 10–20% at most cropland sites, while pockets of underestimation appear in some arid western regions, primarily due to wind speed bias. Wind …

Early Radiographic And Patient-Reported Outcomes Of Percutaneous Distal Metatarsal Osteotomy In Adolescent Hallux Valgus., David Cieremans, Sara Ruzzi, Matthew Titus, Susan Dubowy, Reid Nichols, Joseph Rosenblatt

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous osteotomy for adolescent hallux valgus has become an increasingly popular technique due to its quick recovery time and effectiveness. Few studies have assessed both the radiographic and clinical outcomes of percutaneous osteotomy. We present a series that demonstrates adequate radiographic correction and favorable postoperative patient-reported outcomes.

METHODS: A retrospective review of 27 percutaneous distal metatarsal osteotomies for adolescent hallux valgus performed by two surgeons was conducted at two urban, tertiary children's hospitals. Cases were excluded if radiographic imaging information was not available. Pre- and postoperative radiographic measurements, including hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and distal metatarsal …

An Examination Of Leadership Approaches In Alcoholics Anonymous As Perceived By Its Members, Kelly J. Shaw Aug 2026

An Examination Of Leadership Approaches In Alcoholics Anonymous As Perceived By Its Members, Kelly J. Shaw

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research analyzed leadership dynamics within Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a 12-step recovery group that operates without traditional organizational structures. Although AA's Ninth Tradition emphasizes minimal formal organization, it allows the formation of service boards and committees. This contradiction raises questions about how AA functions effectively without a clearly defined leadership model. Using a qualitative approach, this study aimed to identify the type of leadership present within AA and explore its impact on maintaining sobriety. Additionally, the study examined AA members' perceptions of leadership and how leadership is reflected in the organization's practices. Applying the six-phase reflexive thematic analysis by (2006), …

The True Scope Of Trusting Your Gut: A Study Into The Enteric Nervous System And The Relationship Between The Gut-Brain Axis And The Mind, Bryan Pham Aug 2026

The True Scope Of Trusting Your Gut: A Study Into The Enteric Nervous System And The Relationship Between The Gut-Brain Axis And The Mind, Bryan Pham

Theses & ETDs

Since the early days of medicine, the “gut” had been associated as a seat of emotions and intuition, but as modern science marched forward, the brain itself was given complete dominion over mental health. But thanks to research into the enteric nervous system (ENS), which innervates the digestive tract and bilaterally communicates with the brain as a secondary function, we now know that, in a sense, the gut does indeed have a substantial impact on mental health outside of its primary functions. This profound discovery could potentially cause a massive rewrite for decades of modern neuroscience-based medicine. Overall, the study …

Explaining The Relationship Between Trust And Dependence: The Unexplored Interactive Effect Of Workload And Individual Differences In Cognitive Abilities, Connie Ku

All Dissertations

Trust is often treated as a key driver of automation use, with the assumption that higher trust leads to greater dependence. Yet findings have been inconsistent, with trust-dependence correlations ranging from negative to positive, and some studies finding no relationship at all. One factor that may explain this inconsistency is mental workload, which has received little attention as a moderator. This research examined whether workload moderates the trust-dependence relationship, and whether attention control, working memory, and fluid intelligence further shape this moderation.

Study 1 used a web-based AI chatbot quiz to test whether workload moderated the trust-dependence relationship. Trust was …

The Startup: Critical Perspectives On Technology Entrepreneurship And Digital Labor, Kochav Koren Aug 2026

The Startup: Critical Perspectives On Technology Entrepreneurship And Digital Labor, Kochav Koren

All Duquesne Faculty Scholarship

Communication and media studies are rapidly reshaped by socio-technological forces within the framework of informational capitalism, where startups emerge as key drivers of the global creative economy. This study critically examines the global startup movement through political economy, classical sociology, and Southern perspectives to assess whether digital entrepreneurship fosters genuine, decentralized innovation or perpetuates speculative financialization and labor precarity. Employing a multi-layered theoretical framework—including Schumpeterian creative destruction, Marxist commodity fetishism, and Weberian charismatic authority—and qualitative fieldwork across North and Latin American tech hubs, the analysis reveals startups as network enterprises that both disrupt markets and reproduce structural inequalities. The findings …

Ai You Can Trust: Understanding The Role Of Structural Assurance And Situational Normality In The Use Of Generative Ai, Olushola Bunmi Abayomi

Dissertations

The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has increased its use in productivity, content creation, and decision support; however, adoption depends on user trust, as GenAI performs tasks that are often associated with human judgment. Drawing on the Trust in Technology Model, this dissertation examines how structural assurance and situational normality influence Trust in GenAI, and how Trust in GenAI affects trusting intentions and users' willingness to depend on GenAI. Structural assurance and situational normality, captured through several factors, were modeled as antecedents of Trust in GenAI and, in turn, trusting intentions. The model was tested using survey-based experimental …

Identifying The Threshold: Using Regulatory Focus As A Predictor Of Ceo Adaptibility During Environmental Changes, George B. Constantine Iii Aug 2026

Identifying The Threshold: Using Regulatory Focus As A Predictor Of Ceo Adaptibility During Environmental Changes, George B. Constantine Iii

Dissertations

Building on research on CEO turnover and strategic leadership, this study examines how decision makers' regulatory focus shapes strategic decision-making and how this can contribute to performance decline, often resulting in CEO replacement. Drawing on regulatory focus theory, the study theorizes that measurable chronic regulatory focus attributes influence decision makers’ capacity to adapt to environmental change—conditions under which prior research suggests executives may become rigid and persist with established strategies. Despite its relevance for strategic adaptation, such chronic trait behavior has received limited attention in the current business literature. To address this gap, effectuation theory is integrated into a simulation-based …

The Misinterpretation Of “Corporation” In Indonesia’S Penal Code No. 1 Of 2023: Ensuring Legal Certainty For Recognized Corporate Forms, Rizaldy Alif Syahrial Aug 2026

The Misinterpretation Of “Corporation” In Indonesia’S Penal Code No. 1 Of 2023: Ensuring Legal Certainty For Recognized Corporate Forms, Rizaldy Alif Syahrial

Indonesia Law Review

Abstract

Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Indonesian Penal Code expands criminal liability to include entities that do not possess legal personality, allowing informal entities such as commanditaire vennootschappen (CV), partnerships (firm), unincorporated business groups, and unregistered associations to be prosecuted as corporations. This expansion aims to close legal loopholes in addressing modern criminal activity and to align Indonesia with global developments in corporate criminal liability. However, extending criminal liability to non legal persons generates conceptual tension because Indonesian legal doctrine distinguishes between natural persons and legal persons, which possess legal personality, decision making organs, separate assets, and autonomous …

Trademarks, Functionality, And Competition, Glynn Lunney Aug 2026

Trademarks, Functionality, And Competition, Glynn Lunney

Faculty Scholarship

Courts and commentators have long thought that the purpose of trademark and unfair competition law is to distinguish fair competition from unfair competition and prohibit the latter. Yet, trademark law has a more fundamental, more foundational purpose. Before trademark law can distinguish fair competition from unfair competition, there must first be competition. That makes ensuring competition trademark law’s highest priority. Identifying and prohibiting unfair competition becomes, by necessity, a subordinate concern. Until 1982, courts recognized this hierarchy and enforced a broad and flexible functionality limitation on trademark or trade dress protection to ensure competitive markets. In 1982, however, this changed. …

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary Aug 2026

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary

Faculty Scholarship

We consider a framework which brings together losses arising from rent-dissipation and the workhorse model of law enforcement. Governmental actors engage in a contest to share the proceeds from the enforcement of the law through monetary fines, which leads to rent-dissipation. This causes monetary sanctions to be costly, rendering the model used for studying nonmonetary sanctions a better fit for their analysis. The effect of rent-dissipation on optimal sanctions is directly related to the sanction elasticity of offenses measured at the classic optimum (i.e., where the expected sanction equals the direct harm from the offense). When offenses are inelastic, the …

History, Myth, Courage, And Selflessness: Kate Shelley And The Bridge Of Darkness, Stephen M. Jennings Aug 2026

History, Myth, Courage, And Selflessness: Kate Shelley And The Bridge Of Darkness, Stephen M. Jennings

All Theses

This thesis documents the research, creative development, and production of the animated short film Kate Shelley and the Bridge of Darkness. The project is inspired by the historical account of Kate Shelley, a fifteen-year-old girl who in 1881 crossed a railroad bridge during a violent storm near Moingona, Iowa, to warn a nearby train station of a catastrophic bridge collapse. Over time, Shelley’s actions became both a documented historical event and a subject of mythologized retellings in American cultural memory. The film explores this tension between history and legend through an interpretation that balances historical research with cinematic storytelling. The …
