Why Do We Still Read George Orwell?, Neil Mcbeath
Why Do We Still Read George Orwell?, Neil Mcbeath
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This paper approaches Orwell’s writing from the perspective of the 21st century and asks whether Animal Farm, his satirical fable of the USSR, and the dystopian vision of Nineteen Eighty-Four remain relevant. It dismisses the suggestion that these last two novels can be regarded as the natural culmination of Orwell’s earlier work, principally by examining these other writings demonstrates that there is no natural trajectory. The paper also refers to key dates in Orwell’s life and comments on his career at those particular moments. Orwell remains relevant, the paper concludes, because the forces of oppression he so vehemently opposed remain …
Recovery Of An Early Evidence Of Castor Plant, Ricinus Communis L. From The Central Sudan And Its Positioning Within A World-Wide Context, Anwar A-Magid
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Evidence of castor plant R. communis, L. is recovered from the Early Holocene archaeological site of Kabbashi Haitah in the Central Sudan and dated to c. 7700 - 7200 bp. This evidence represents the earliest botanical evidence recovered –so far- from the Central Sudan and elsewhere in Eastern Tropical Africa and the World. No evidence is found in the material culture remains which might indicate the likelihood of its being imported. Most of the ancient and traditional utilizations of castor plant are strikingly similar despite their being practised at different times in different and far apart regions in the World. …
Camels In Rock Art Scenes In Dhofar, Ali Tigani Elmahi
Camels In Rock Art Scenes In Dhofar, Ali Tigani Elmahi
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
The region of Dhofar in southern Oman is rich in rock art scenes that widely portray the camel. This paper examines these rock art scenes and looks into their cultural signification. It examines the camel scenes to highlight this animal’s characteristics and its role in the economy, trade and transport. Furthermore, the paper draws from an ongoing ethnoarchaeological study to establish certain analogies in order to explain the significance of these scenes and their denotation. The study regards the scenes as a representation of a wide spread rock art camel culture that parallels traditional camel culture in Dhofar.

Beyond Theoretical Education: The Prospects For National Wealth In Dhofar, Ali Tigani Elmahi
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Dhofar region in southern Oman possesses a wealth of livestock. This wealth is managed traditionally by different Dhofari groups in a distinct landscape and ecological conditions. By the seventies, development addressed all aspects of live in the Sultanate. Education turned out to be a prime objective in development plans. In Dhofar, young generations of pastoralists found their way into education. It is known that the route of education starts directly from primary school level to the university level. Consequently, theoretical university education detach and disengage young Dhofaris from their forefathers’ traditional profession and most of all their wealth. Dhofar’s livestock …
Arab Islamic Scholars: Contributions Lost, Khawlah Ahmed
Arab Islamic Scholars: Contributions Lost, Khawlah Ahmed
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Arab Islamic scholars have played a major role in the development of science and knowledge and have produced work that has been regarded by many as the catalyst for the enlightenment of the world. They have set foundations and were responsible for many scientific breakthroughs. Yet contemporary history books and academic curriculums neglected these contributions and the role they played. This paper presents research evidence that documents some of these contributions and initiates the argument that there is a need to present such work, connect the past to the present by presenting what seems to have been lost along the …

Traceable Peo-Poly(Ester) Micelles For Breast Cancer Targeting: The Effect Of Core Structure And Targeting Peptide On Micellar Tumor Accumulation, Shyam M. Garg, Igor M. Paiva, Mohammad R. Vakili, Rania Soudy, Kate Agopsowicz, Amir H. Soleimani, Mary Hitt, Kamaljit Kaur, Afsaneh Lavasanifar
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Traceable poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(ester) micelles were developed through chemical conjugation of a near-infrared (NIR) dye to the poly(ester) end by click chemistry. This strategy was tried for micelles with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(α-benzyl carboxylate-ε-caprolactone) (PBCL) cores. The surface of both micelles was also modified with the breast cancer targeting peptide, P18-4. The results showed the positive contribution of PBCL over PCL core on micellar thermodynamic and kinetic stability as well as accumulation in primary orthotopic MDA-MB-231 tumors within 4–96 h following intravenous administration in mice. This was in contrast to in vitro studies where better uptake of PEO-PCL versus PEO-PBCL micelles …

Boom! Boom! Boom!, Ariel Woodbury
Boom! Boom! Boom!, Ariel Woodbury
Children's Book and Media Review
The thunder booms outside and no one wants to be alone. A little boy is joined under the covers by his animals friends, one by one, until the bed can't hold them all! The bed breaks and everyone scatters, leaving the little boy and his teddy bear to sleep alone at last. The story has a rhyming narrative that counts along as the number of animals in the boy's bed increases with each turn of the page. The storm outside the boy's room is paired with large, colorful type for its onomatopoetic booms and crashes. The illustrations have soft edges …
