Wisdom Pneumatology And The Creative Spirit: The Book Of Wisdom And The Trinitarian Act Of Creation, Jeffrey Lamp Aug 2017

Wisdom Pneumatology And The Creative Spirit: The Book Of Wisdom And The Trinitarian Act Of Creation, Jeffrey Lamp

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Recent interest in Trinitarian theology has given rise to consideration of the act of creation as a Trinitarian act. Focus on the Father and the Son in the act of creation is abundantly attested in this scholarship. However, consideration of the place of the Spirit in the creative act is somewhat underdeveloped. Th is article delves more deeply into the Spirit’s role in creation by looking at wisdom and spirit language in the deuterocanonical Wisdom of Solomon. In the early chapters of the book, wisdom is characterized as a kindly spirit that brings life and penetrates all things, human and …

A Study On The Biodiversity Of Ladybird Beetles In Soybean Agroecosystems Of Northwestern Ohio, Mohammed Albaaj Aug 2017

A Study On The Biodiversity Of Ladybird Beetles In Soybean Agroecosystems Of Northwestern Ohio, Mohammed Albaaj

Honors Projects

Lady or Ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) represent a large and diverse group of beetles found worldwide. Approximately six thousand (6,000) ladybird species are known globally (reference). In eastern North America, there are 60 genera containing approximately 480 species (Evans, 2014). Most species are predatory, feeding on life stages of other insects, such as aphids, caterpillars, and insect eggs, as well as plant-feeding mites, and thus provide an essential ecosystem service for humans in terms of pest control (Obrycki and Kring, 1998). Thus, this group of beetles is important for the reduction of arthropod pest populations on a variety of fruit, …

The Interommatidial Bristle Variability Of Diptera, Kimberly Palmer Aug 2017

The Interommatidial Bristle Variability Of Diptera, Kimberly Palmer

Honors College Theses

Insects of the order Diptera are a popular biological model for understanding morphological trait evolution. One area of particular interest is the development of the compound eyes. While the development of ommatidia and photoreceptors has been thoroughly studied in this case, little attention has been paid to the interommatidial bristles (IOBs) present on the eyes of some dipteran families. A preliminary survey suggested that these bristles exhibit high variability among IOB families on multiple taxonomic levels and are not uniformly present or absent in any suborder of the Diptera. To confirm this observation, I conducted a literature search to …

Investigating The Needs Of Parents Of Premature Infants’ Interaction In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Maureen A. Rinehimer Aug 2017

Investigating The Needs Of Parents Of Premature Infants’ Interaction In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Maureen A. Rinehimer

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Parents and/or caregivers of premature infants provide the interaction needed to promote better outcomes for these challenged infants at risk for developmental delays. This descriptive, exploratory study utilized convenience sampling. Inclusion criteria consisted of parents/caregivers who were at least 18 years of age and older with infants born 35 weeks gestation or less and currently in the NICU. This study focused on the research question: What do parents perceive they need in the NICU to enjoy interacting with their infant in the home? To collect the data needed to capture the perceptions of parent’s needs of infants in the NICU, …

Panorama, Ayuko Sakurai Aug 2017

Panorama, Ayuko Sakurai

Theses

The series of art forms “Panorama” was my visual representation of interpreting an individual’s world and invisible 360 degree space around him or her. By observing different scenes and people from above, I simplified them and their panoramic space into dots and spheres through my imaginary bird’s eye. The core idea of “Panorama” was a perception within or from this personal encompassing space.

With experiments and new techniques such as welding, the art forms turned out as a pentagon with five free-standing steel panels and four wearable pieces with aluminum structures. These wearable works were hung from the gallery ceiling …

Evidence Of Youthful Aging: Chronic Stress And The Association With Dna Damage, Jason M. Fly, M. Catherine Desoto Aug 2017

Evidence Of Youthful Aging: Chronic Stress And The Association With Dna Damage, Jason M. Fly, M. Catherine Desoto

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: Persistent elevated basal levels of the hormone cortisol are an indication of chronic stress. Maladaptive response to stress, or chronic psychological stress, is thought to play a crucial role in the biological mechanisms involved in mental disorders, disease, and accelerated aging. In 2011, a critical connection was reported between elevated cortisol and the oxidative damage to DNA associated with aging and disease in a study of elderly participants (ages 63-83) via 24-hour urinary samples (Joergensen, et. al., 2011). This connection, if verified, has implications for how stress may accelerate the aging process and the onset of cancer, diabetes, and …

Tracing Ancient Healing Practices Through The Hibiscus, Lyn Tackett Aug 2017

Tracing Ancient Healing Practices Through The Hibiscus, Lyn Tackett

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: By studying traditional healing practices, we can provide new information that may help solve archaeological mysteries as well as offer new perspectives to modern medicine. For example, Hibiscus tea has long been in use throughout Africa and Asia, yet little research has been done into the origins of this medicine and whether early cultures traded that information. Trichomes and plant morphology of three species of Hibiscus native to Africa, China and India ( Hibiscus sabdariffa, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, and Hibiscus syriacus) were studied using microscopy. The results were compared to known medicinal claims and ancient documents including trade maps and …

African-American Labor History In Waterloo: The Exhibit, Niria White Aug 2017

African-American Labor History In Waterloo: The Exhibit, Niria White

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: This study uses a labor history lens to research African American labor impacts in Waterloo, Iowa. During the Great Migration, African American laborers travelled to Iowa to work on the Illinois Central Railroad. In time, they began to work at the Rath Packinghouse and helped to build the community. This work is being developed into a public history exhibit at the Grout Museum, furthering knowledge of African American contributions to the Mid-West; countering the idea that African Americans have only been politically active during the Civil Rights Era. Historical records, artifacts, and personal interviews provided the data for this …

Combining Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Diagnosing Focal Brain Lesions In Children, Farah Naz Farid, Waseem Mirza, Nauman Hashmani

Section of Ophthalmology

Introduction: We attempted to find the sensitivity and specificity of various pediatric brain masses in the Pakistani population while keeping histopathology or clinical diagnosis as the gold standard.
Methods: This was a retrospective study that was conducted from January 2007 to January 2016. We reviewed the records of 204 patients that presented to the radiology department of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). Out of the 204, 135 pediatric patients in the 0–18 age group with focal brain lesions who underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and a biopsy or clinical diagnosis were included. If histopathology was available, it was taken as …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The cyclin D1 gene encodes the regulatory subunit of a holoenzyme that drives cell autonomous cell cycle progression and proliferation. Herein we show cyclin D1 abundance is increased > 30-fold in the stromal fibroblasts of patients with invasive breast cancer, associated with poor outcome. Cyclin D1 transformed hTERT human fibroblast to a cancer-associated fibroblast phenotype. Stromal fibroblast expression of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1Stroma) in vivo, enhanced breast epithelial cancer tumor growth, restrained apoptosis, and increased autophagy. Cyclin D1Stroma had profound effects on the breast tumor microenvironment increasing the recruitment of F4/80+ and CD11b+ macrophages and increasing …

Effects Of Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury On The Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability To [14c] And [13c]Sucrose, Mohammad K. Miah, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Hepatic encephalopathy that is associated with severe liver failure may compromise the blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. However, the effects of less severe liver diseases, in the absence of overt encephalopathy, on the BBB are not well understood. The goal of the current study was to investigate the effects of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury on the BBB tight junction permeability to small, hydrophilic molecules using the widely used [14C]sucrose and recently-proposed alternative [13C]sucrose as markers. Rats were subjected to 20 min of hepatic ischemia or sham surgery, followed by 8 h of reperfusion before administration of a single bolus dose of …

A Folk Story From Dhofar A Pathway To Indigenous Knowledge, Ali Tigani Elmahi, Ahmed Mohamed Al Khatheri

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Folktales serve certain aspects and involve meaningful intentions in the society. This paper assess a Dhofari folk story in Oman. The story denotes the significance of folk explanation for the first emergence of poultry in Dhofar. It compares the beautiful coloured bird the Arabian partridge, Alectoris melanocephala in Dhofar’s environment with the common domestic chicken Gallus domesticus. The paper concludes that the folktales target the conservation of the society’s traditions, educating and enlightening the society’s members especially the young generations and most all demonstrates the faculty of folk explanation. Therefore, the paper urges that these folktales must be documented and …

Principles Of Arabic Noun Gender: An Overview Of Learning Difficulties, Abdulhamid Alaqtash, Amjad Talafha Aug 2017

Principles Of Arabic Noun Gender: An Overview Of Learning Difficulties, Abdulhamid Alaqtash, Amjad Talafha

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Arab linguists have distinguished between the animate and inanimate gender of nouns, where the former was assigned a male or female natural gender and the later a grammatical gender, and so the distinction between the real natural gender and the figurative grammatical gender has spread widely in Arabic grammar. Educational studies and linguistic research carried out by educationalists and linguists have indicated the prevalence of two difficulties in teaching and learning the issue of grammatical gender. The first is related to distinguishing between masculine and feminine within the same sex; the other is related to the multiplicities in the structural …

Predators can limit prey abundance and/or levels of activity. The magnitudes of these effects are contingent on predator and prey traits that may change with environmental conditions. Aberrant thermal regimes could disrupt pest suppression through asymmetric effects, e.g. heat-sensitive predator vs. heat-tolerant prey. To explore potential effects of warming on suppressing pests and controlling herbivory in a vegetable crop, we performed laboratory experiments exposing an important pest species to two spider predator species at different temperatures. Heat tolerance was characterised by the critical thermal maxima parameter (CTM50) of the cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata), wolf spider (Tigrosa helluo …

Let The Facts Speak For Themselves: The Empiricist Origins Of The Right To Remain Silent, Randa Helfield Aug 2017

Let The Facts Speak For Themselves: The Empiricist Origins Of The Right To Remain Silent, Randa Helfield

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Historians have traced the right to silence to early canon law, the political conflicts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and even The Prisoner’s Counsel Act, which effectively silenced the accused by allowing his lawyer to speak for him. This article argues that changes in philosophical notions of truth best explain how, given the importance of the accused’s testimony at the altercation trial, her silence could ever have been tolerated and ultimately enforced as a right. By the mid-eighteenth century, the rise of empiricism had shifted the trial’s reliance on testimony to a preference for facts, which seemed more immediately …
