Maximizing Use Of An Extension Beef Cattle Data Set: Part 3—Weights And Growth, Jennifer M. Ramsay, Lauren L. Hulsman Hanna, Kris A. Ringwall

Journal of Extension

Previously, we described calving distribution and reproductive rates from CHAPS20Y, an Extension beef cattle data set. In this article, we describe CHAPS20Y data on birth weight, weaning weight, pounds weaned per cow exposed, calf age at weaning/weighing, average daily gain, weight per day age, frame score, and cow age, weight, and condition. Yearly mean weights and growth are consistent over the 20-year period, with variation among herds. Breed, management, and environmental differences may explain some of the variation. Our analysis of the CHAPS20Y data provides Extension professionals with expanded knowledge of beef cattle weights and growth and, accordingly, improved ability …

Perceptions Of Crop Consultants And Crop Producers On Grazing Corn Residue In Nebraska, Jordan L. Cox-O'Neill, Kristen M. Ulmer, Manbir Rakkar, Lisa Franzen-Castle, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Mary E. Drewnoski, James C. Macdonald, Richard J. Rasby Oct 2017

Perceptions Of Crop Consultants And Crop Producers On Grazing Corn Residue In Nebraska, Jordan L. Cox-O'Neill, Kristen M. Ulmer, Manbir Rakkar, Lisa Franzen-Castle, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Mary E. Drewnoski, James C. Macdonald, Richard J. Rasby

Journal of Extension

We conducted a survey to evaluate factors influencing consultant recommendations on grazing and producer grazing practices in Nebraska. Producers who did not graze cited soil compaction, inconvenience (lack of watering and fencing), and lack of access to livestock as major reasons for not grazing. Producers who allowed grazing and consultants who recommended grazing were more likely than those who did not favor grazing to perceive that grazing increased subsequent grain yields. Most consultants and producers reported making decisions on the basis of their personal observations. Findings from the survey can be used for enhanced Extension dissemination and research activities regarding …

Using Gamification To Teach Livestock Management Skills, Ryan Reuter Oct 2017

Using Gamification To Teach Livestock Management Skills, Ryan Reuter

Journal of Extension

This article describes a game that is based around estimating body weights of live cows and is used for teaching ranchers about the importance of monitoring the body weights of their animals. Ranchers viewed four cows and then used their smartphones to submit an estimate of each cow's weight. Results were accumulated and analyzed through use of a custom software script and then were shared with the ranchers during a training session. Following training, the ranchers evaluated four additional cows. Participating in and engaging with the game and training significantly improved ranchers' skill at estimating weight. Gamification can be a …

Journal of Extension

As 4-H evolves to include a wide breadth of youths' modern interests, innovative educational opportunities and evaluation practices become necessary. Horsemanship and safety-based horse camps were created in response to a statewide challenge to develop competitive 4-H members and retain those members as they approach adolescence. This article addresses the development, implementation, and review of Arkansas's horse 4-H camps. The article content includes a practical example of Kirkpatrick's evaluation model and a description of how a goal-based evaluation led to planned program modifications.

Usefulness Of Delivery Methods For Climate Change Programming: Perspectives Of Extension And Research Faculty, Kaila Thorn, Daniel Tobin, Rama Radhakrishna, Allison Chatchyan, Joana Chan, Shorna Allred Oct 2017

Usefulness Of Delivery Methods For Climate Change Programming: Perspectives Of Extension And Research Faculty, Kaila Thorn, Daniel Tobin, Rama Radhakrishna, Allison Chatchyan, Joana Chan, Shorna Allred

Journal of Extension

Extension is responding to climate change through programming intended to encourage adaptation and mitigation in agricultural production and natural resources management. However, effectively engaging target audiences requires identifying appropriate delivery methods. We conducted a study to identify delivery methods researchers and Extension professionals at land-grant universities in the northeastern United States perceive as useful for climate change outreach. Respondents viewed all delivery methods as only slightly useful, though traditional options, including face-to-face interactions and the use of videos and websites, were perceived as slightly more useful than other delivery methods. Therefore, we in Extension must experiment with various delivery methods …

“Those Who Don’T Remember Don’T Exist Anywhere:” Historical Redemption In Patricio Guzmán’S Nostalgia For The Light (2010), Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera Sep 2017

“Those Who Don’T Remember Don’T Exist Anywhere:” Historical Redemption In Patricio Guzmán’S Nostalgia For The Light (2010), Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera

Journal of Religion & Film

The poetic aesthetic of Patricio Guzman’s documentary Nostalgia for the Light (2010) ponders the nature of memory and history. The film uses a metaphysical approach to explore the traumatic past of Chile, creating a sense of historical redemption as defined by Walter Benjamin (1940). Contemporary Latin American documentaries have abandoned the idea of objectivity to focus on subjective portrayals of memory as a way to capture the plurality of personal experiences of historical events. As a result, these documentaries have become more artistic and formally innovative than the previous epic informative films of the region. In the case of Guzman’s …

Still Banned After All These Years- Retracing The Journey Of Cavani’S ‘Revolutionary’ Galileo (1968)., Silvia Angeli

Journal of Religion & Film

“Revolutionary” and “scandalous” are adjectives the late Ettore Bernabei, General Director of Italian State Television (RAI) from 1961 to 1974, used to describe Liliana Cavani’s Galileo (1968) in a 2005 interview for Corriere della Sera. Such harsh judgment reflects the undiminished hostility of a significant branch of Italian Catholicism toward the film. The fact that almost 50 years after its release Galileo has yet to be broadcast on public television despite being commissioned by it unequivocally confirms this hostility. Based on primary sources such as press articles and archival sources, this article chronicles Galileo’s incredible journey through …

Depictions Of Catholic And Protestant Bodies In Elizabeth (Dir. Kapur, 1998), Jennifer M. Desilva, Alison R. Orewiler Sep 2017

Depictions Of Catholic And Protestant Bodies In Elizabeth (Dir. Kapur, 1998), Jennifer M. Desilva, Alison R. Orewiler

Journal of Religion & Film

This article uses the film Elizabeth (dir. Kapur, 1998) as a portal for understanding the interstices between modern and early modern conceptions of religion as it is read on the body. Elizabeth examines the period of religious and political unrest immediately before and after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I (r. 1558-1603), compressing the late 1550s through the early 1570s into a comprehensive statement on the relationship between the body, heresy, and corruption. This article investigates how lower body activities and functions, like dancing, sex, and defecation, were linked in both the film and early modern minds to immorality, corruption, …

Fixing Ground Zero: Race And Religion In Francis Lawrence’S I Am Legend, Michael E. Heyes Sep 2017

Fixing Ground Zero: Race And Religion In Francis Lawrence’S I Am Legend, Michael E. Heyes

Journal of Religion & Film

Francis Lawrence’s I Am Legend is a complex intertext of Matheson’s novel of the same name and its two previous film adaptations. While the film attempts to depict racism as monstrous, the frequent invocation of 9/11 imagery and Christian symbolism throughout the film recodes the vampiric dark-seekers as radical Islamic terrorists. This serves to further enshrine an us/Christians vs. them/Muslim dichotomy present in post-9/11 America, a dichotomy that the film presents as “curable” through the spread of Christianity and the fall of Islam.

Calundu's Winds Of Divination: Music And Black Religiosity In Eighteenth And Nineteenth-Century Minas Gerais, Brazil, Jonathon Grasse Sep 2017

Calundu's Winds Of Divination: Music And Black Religiosity In Eighteenth And Nineteenth-Century Minas Gerais, Brazil, Jonathon Grasse

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Calundu was an African-derived religious practice known in colonial Brazil, most widely recognized in Minas Gerais during and following that region’s early eighteenth-century gold rush. Drumming, chant, and dance channeled healing and divinational powers brought about primarily through trance possession. Severely disrupted by Church intervention, descriptions of calundu found in Portuguese Inquisition testimony join the published observations by European travelers as windows into the social history of Minas Gerais, an important yet often overlooked cultural territory of Brazil. This region of gold, diamonds, and coffee formed one of the most intense, highly populated slave operations known in the Western Hemisphere. …

The Acoustics Of Justice: Music And Myth In Afro-Brazilian Congado, Genevieve E. Dempsey Sep 2017

The Acoustics Of Justice: Music And Myth In Afro-Brazilian Congado, Genevieve E. Dempsey

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

For the Afro-Brazilian musicians of popular Catholicism, or Congadeiros, who live precariously on the urban and rural margins of Brazil, ritual undergirds their struggles for subsistence, spiritual fulfillment, and racial equality. When Congadeiros create ritual, they enter into a tradition begun in the seventeenth century in Brazil by their enslaved African and Afro-descendant ancestors who intoned songs of redemption. In keeping with their ancestors’ evocations of dignity during slavery, worshipers in the present day embed multiple kinds of vested interests within ritual festivity to achieve racial equality. This article explores Congado, the ceremonies of these disenfranchised musicians, to …

On May 31, 2014, two 12-year-old girls lured a friend, also 12, into the woods with the promise of a game of hide-and-seek. Once there, one of the girls pinned their friend down, while the other stabbed her 19 times with a long-bladed kitchen knife, causing serious injuries to major organs and arteries. The young perpetrators then fled the scene, leaving their young friend to die of her injuries. Miraculously, the victim survived. She was able to crawl to a road where a cyclist found her and went for help.

Reanimating Heritage In The Global South, Jose Jowel Canuday Sep 2017

Reanimating Heritage In The Global South, Jose Jowel Canuday

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: The idea of heritage as a cultural process implicated by the politics of knowledge, contestation of memory, and continuing re-imagination of local spaces across varying episodes of globalization bind together the articles and the conversation featured in this volume. The Philippine experience serves as the locus for dissecting these processes and interrogating the ideological fermentations surrounding the universalist notion of heritage. On such account, the assessments presented here exemplify how heritage has been mobilized as social and political instruments in the Global South with a view of enriching the broader efforts of re-understanding heritage beyond the idea of it …

Safeguarding Pabalat-Wrapped Pastillas In The Philippines: Problems And Possibilities Of Community Participation, Patricia Gonzalez Sep 2017

Safeguarding Pabalat-Wrapped Pastillas In The Philippines: Problems And Possibilities Of Community Participation, Patricia Gonzalez

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This article describes the Philippine foodway and craft form of pabalat-wrapped pastillas by examining the different communities involved in its practice and preservation. It analyzes how the participatory framework reshapes the authorized heritage discourse and argues for a more pragmatic conceptualization of community participation that recognizes the different kinds of communities involved in heritage work, shows sensitivity to the politics at play, and aims at parity among actors—not exclusion. Tracing the history of borlas de pastillas and assessing its uses in tourism demonstrations, festivals, training programs and museum exhibits reveals the problematic issues of disinheritance, dissonance, memory, and ownership that …

Manila's "Chinatown": Globalization And Built Heritage, Erik Akpedonu, Czarina Saloma Sep 2017

Manila's "Chinatown": Globalization And Built Heritage, Erik Akpedonu, Czarina Saloma

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Philippine society and culture are generally viewed as the convergence of indigenous Austronesian and Hispanic elements. Often overlooked, however, are the significant contributions of the Chinese. In this article, we trace Chinese contributions to the built heritage of Manila beginning in the sixteenth century and examine the process of globalization as “glocalization.” Our main proposition is that in Manila’s “Chinatown,” these contributions are a refraction of Chinese architectural and art styles through local architectural and art traditions. Such mixing, blending or adapting of two or more processes accompanied the evolving search of Chinese migrants (notably artisans) from (primarily) Fujian Province …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: According to Bruno Latour (2014) we are now in the age of Anthropocene, where human activity is the main shaper of the physical and social environment. As to when this age started is difficult to ascertain – it may have begun 500,000 years ago when fire was first employed or 10,000 years ago when cultivation and animal husbandry was practiced. Some anthropologists date this age to the first water pump (1710) at the start of the industrial revolution. In any case, it now seems clear that human activity is the main determinant of our physical and social world. A …

The Role Of Glutamate Neurotransmission In The Ventral Tegmental Area In The Expression Of Conditioned Approach Learning, Priscila Hachimine-Merli Sep 2017

The Role Of Glutamate Neurotransmission In The Ventral Tegmental Area In The Expression Of Conditioned Approach Learning, Priscila Hachimine-Merli

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Conditioned stimuli (CSs) come to function as CSs by acquiring the capacity to activate the same mesocorticolimbic dopamine (DA) neurons activated by primary rewards, producing conditioned activation of these neurons and their associated motivational states. This model stipulates that CSs activate mesocorticolimbic DA systems through the activation of glutamate receptors on DA neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). We tested the hypothesis that glutamate receptor stimulation in the VTA is necessary for the expression of conditioned approach. Rats were tested in a conditioned approach protocol that consisted of 7 consecutive conditioning sessions (light presentations and food were paired), one …

Shame, Darwin, And Other Victorian Writers, Aaron Khai Han Ho Sep 2017

Shame, Darwin, And Other Victorian Writers, Aaron Khai Han Ho

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The dissertation explores shame and how shame shapes identities in the nineteenth century. While many scholars examine Darwin in terms of narrativity, how he attempts to counter the theological language in Victorian evolutionary discourses, and the influences he has on his contemporary writers, I argue that his writing on shame, which is part of his long argument on evolution, secularizes the concept of shame, opposing the notions of many Victorians that shame is God-given. Both God-given shame and secular shame are rooted in sexuality, as this dissertation will show, and thus shame, sexuality, and identity are interconnected. Using Darwin as …

Cortical Thickness Abnormalities Within The Salience And Reward Networks In Older Depressed Adults With Apathy, Monique A. Pimontel Sep 2017

Cortical Thickness Abnormalities Within The Salience And Reward Networks In Older Depressed Adults With Apathy, Monique A. Pimontel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Background and Significance: Apathy is a common comorbidity in late-life depression. Among older depressed adults, apathy is associated with a number of adverse outcomes, including increased disability, comorbid illness, and mortality. The etiological substrates of apathy in late-life depression nonetheless remain poorly understood, and little is known about its optimal treatment. To this end, the aim of the current study was to examine cortical abnormalities within the salience (SN) and reward networks (RN), two brain systems involved in the processing of incentive salience that may underlie the syndrome of apathy in older depressed adults.

Methods: We examined the association between …

Descent And Ascent In Hayden's Symbolic Elegy “The Diver”, Saad Najim Al-Kafaji, Nour Abdul-Kadhim Abdul-Alli Auda Al-Rikabi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Mourning and suffering are central topics within Robert Hayden’s poem. He has introduced into the canon of elegy a special kind of mourning – intractable work of mourning. Hayden colors his poetics of loss with the special work and dilemmas of his black consciousness. Therefore, this paper gives an interpretive analysis of one of his most important elegies “The Diver,” which would serve as a methodological paradigm for the literary analysis of Hayden’s elegies and elegiac texts in general.
