Each Body Is A Strange Beach, Myda El-Maghrabi
Each Body Is A Strange Beach, Myda El-Maghrabi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
What drives not merely the individual but our society as a whole? How do we regard our own experiences, and, as an extension, how does that affect how we relate to the experiences of another? How do our individual motivations affect our societal motivations and vice versa? These core questions serve as the catalyst for my work. By developing artwork with this line of inquiry in mind, which includes research into contemporary as well as historic social criticisms, I come closer to finding answers to the questions that fuel my artistic practice. Throughout the process, I mine the many ways …
Institutional Change In Undergraduate Education At A Research University: The Stony Brook Undergraduate Colleges, Donna M. Di Donato
Institutional Change In Undergraduate Education At A Research University: The Stony Brook Undergraduate Colleges, Donna M. Di Donato
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This qualitative case study concentrates on the evolution of undergraduate education at Stony Brook University, with particular focus on the establishment and continuity of the Undergraduate College program. The Undergraduate Colleges represent the most broadly imagined undertaking in undergraduate education in Stony Brook’s history and, therefore, is a good case study for the exploration of the topic of institutionalizing change and programmatic persistence. The Undergraduate Colleges marked the first attempt to establish a formal introduction to Stony Brook as a research university to all incoming freshmen, involving both academic and student affairs components and, most importantly, faculty. Program architects contended …

The Appearance Of My Abstraction And Exploration Of Its Identity, Ye-Seul Choi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In order to specifically articulate my work’s progress, I will organize this thesis focusing on the experience of my inner point of view as an artist. This will provide the intimate interaction and communication between me and my work. I have arranged the order of development to show how my work has changed since 2009. Each chapter will deal with procedural subjects in the advance of my art. I began with the inspiration of materiality, and this interest was evolving in the exploration of paintings by focusing on pictorial materials. Major streaming of its whole structure will be built on …
Influence Propagation Modeling And Applications In Finance, Li Zhang
Influence Propagation Modeling And Applications In Finance, Li Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
To appropriately use the information from social media for finance-related problems is typically challenging to both finance and data mining. Traditional schemes in finance focus on identifying the trading activities and financial events that generate asset abnormal returns, while the usage of data typically only covers regular events such as earning announcements, financial statements, and new stock issuance. Related data-driven implementations mainly focus on developing trading strategies using social media data, while the results usually lack theoretical explanations. This work is designed to fill the gap between the usage of social media data and financial theories, with comprehensive evaluations using …
Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller
Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Powder coatings are becoming ubiquitous in the coating marketplace due to the absence of solvents in their formulation, but they have yet to see implementation in low-reflectance outdoor applications. This demand could be met by utilizing polymer blends formulated with low loadings of matting agents and pigments. The goal of this research is a thorough characterization of prototype low-reflectance coatings through several analytical techniques. Prototypical thermoset blends consist of functionalized polyurethanes rendered immiscible by differences in polar and hydrogen bonding characteristics, resulting in a surface roughened by droplet domains. Analysis of both pigmented and control clear films was performed. This …

Performance Evaluation Of A Dc Direct-Coupled Pv System In Comparison With A Typical Grid-Connected Ac System For A Commercial Building, Utkarshaa Varshney
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
With exponential hike in greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of fossil fuels, advancing renewable energy technology is the best available answer to global demands of clean and green energy. Solar Photovoltaic technology, although implemented worldwide, has a large further scope of improvement to create a fully accepted solar-powered society. One such concept can be a DC based photovoltaic system, which enables the use of DC power directly from solar panels without incorporating inverters. This thesis is based on a system-level PV project, which evaluates a newly installed DC direct-coupled system which uses DC power for office LED lighting, in comparison …
Evolution Of Surface Morphology And Chemistry In Zno Thin Films And Steel Surfaces Studied By Synchrotron X-Ray Spectroscopy And Imaging, Hua Jiang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Thin film and surface treatment play an important role in developing materials with unique properties. They have been widely used in energy generation and storage, optical devices, LEDS, electrical semiconductor devices, etc. The stability and functionality of them under operational environment are important, especially the surface morphology and chemical evolution at micro-scale. This information is critical to understand the behaviors of the materials under various environments for a wide range of applications. Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) are suitable techniques on investigating surface morphology and chemical evolution. Here, we use both techniques to investigate …

Light-Induced Self-Assembly And Diffusion Of Nanoclusters, Wenxuan Lian
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Novel methods to build multiple types of three-dimensional structures from various nanoscale components are the most exciting and challenging questions in nano-science. The properties of the assembled structures can be potentially and designed, but the development of such approaches is challenging. In order to realize such rational assembly, a tunable interaction medium is often introduced into the system. Soft matter, such as polymers, surfactants and biomolecules are used to modify the surfaces of the nanoscale building blocks. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are known as polynucleotides since they are composed of simpler units called nucleotides. There are unique base pairing rules …

Landscape Network, Xiao Sheng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Wen Zhengming’s Deep Snow in Guanshan Mountains, as many other landscape paintings in China, is usually interpreted and appreciated as the spirituality extended from the artist. It also relates the common value of aesthetics come from traditional Chinese philosophy, and the value system completes itself as a mature system of appreciating artworks. However, since traditional literature of art criticism and appreciation in China tends to be generalized, concise, and implicative, and there are certain viewpoints that are tacitly agreed among artists and art critics, it is often self-evident for people who are familiar with the system of Chinese aesthetics, but …
Measurement Of Dielectron Invariant Mass Spectra In $Au+Au$ Collisions At $\Sqrt{S_{Nn}}=200gev$ With Hbd In Phenix, Jiayin Sun
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Dileptons are emitted throughout the entire space-time evolution of heavy ion collisions. Being colorless, these electromagnetic probes do not participate in the final-state strong interactions during the passage through the hot medium, and retain the information on the conditions of their creation. This characteristic renders them valuable tools for studying the properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma created during ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The invariant mass spectra of dileptons contain a wealth of information on every stage of the evolution of heavy ion collisions. At low mass, dilepton spectra consist mainly of light meson decays. The medium modification of the …
Molecular Strong Field Ionization Viewed With Photoelectron Velocity Map Imaging, Peter Sandor
Molecular Strong Field Ionization Viewed With Photoelectron Velocity Map Imaging, Peter Sandor
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this thesis, work is presented on molecular strong-field ionization, during which an electron is removed from polyatomic molecules in the presence of strong laser fields. This is a process which is the basis of a number of experimental techniques to uncover electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules on the femtosecond and attosecond timescale. ’Strong’ refers to an electric field strength which leads to a response from the system which can not be modeled perturbatively. These fields can be easily produced in the focus of femtosecond laser radiation, as is done in this work. With the use of velocity map …
Applications Of Tensor Network Algorithms In Quantum Many-Body Physics, Colin Gareth West
Applications Of Tensor Network Algorithms In Quantum Many-Body Physics, Colin Gareth West
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The classical simulation of many-body quantum systems is an essential tool in understanding many fundamental aspects of condensed matter physics. But a major obstacle arises from the number of degrees of freedom involved in describing such systems, which is exponential in the system size. Recently, however, a class of numerical techniques based on structures called "tensor networks" has emerged, which allows many "typical" quantum states (such as the ground states of gapped, local Hamiltonians) to be represented much more efficiently. In this work we extend and apply these techniques to consider several central topics in quantum many-body physics. After reviewing …

Physical Polymerization Mechanisms In The Chemistry-To-Biology Transition, Elizaveta Guseva
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Studying complex systems and emergent phenomena is very popular today. The reason is that we desperately need more knowledge about many complex systems such as cells, organisms, society and emergent phenomena on the internet. Applying physical and quantitative methods to such systems resulted in many discoveries, yet a lot of knowledge is missing. In particular, we don’t fully understand living systems including their emergence. What are the minimal requirements for life? How to make a chemical system capable of inheritance and open ended evolution? If a system is capable of Darwinian evolution, is it necessarily a living system? Modern life …
White Dwarf Mergers On Adaptive Meshes, Maximilian Peter Katz
White Dwarf Mergers On Adaptive Meshes, Maximilian Peter Katz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The mergers of binary white dwarf systems are potential progenitors of astrophysical explosions such as Type Ia supernovae. These white dwarfs can merge either by orbital decay through the emission of gravitational waves or by direct collisions as a result of orbital perturbations. The coalescence of the stars may ignite nuclear fusion, resulting in the destruction of both stars through a thermonuclear runaway and ensuing detonation. The goal of this dissertation is to simulate binary white dwarf systems using the techniques of computational fluid dynamics and therefore to understand what numerical techniques are necessary to obtain accurate dynamical evolution of …
Evaluation Of 4h Silicon Carbide And Gallium Nitride Crystals For Power Electronics & Lighting Applications, Xiaolin Yang
Evaluation Of 4h Silicon Carbide And Gallium Nitride Crystals For Power Electronics & Lighting Applications, Xiaolin Yang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Silicon carbide is a promising semiconductor material with more preferable properties than the traditional materials like silicon dioxide and gallium arsenide. With large band-gap, high breakdown voltage, high thermal conductivity and good resistance in radiation environment, SiC is widely used in electronic devices especially under high frequency, high voltage and high temperature. Despite of its good properties, the application of SiC is limited by the growth of high quality single crystal boule, namely, the defects inside the SiC crystals have deleterious effects on the performance of devices made of it. In this thesis, the combination of techniques including Synchrotron White …

Fabrication Of A Novel Biosensor For Macromolecules Detection Through Molecular Imprinting Technique, Yingjie Yu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There is an increasing need for precise molecular detection as a diagnostic tool for early identification of diseases, pathogens, and abnormal protein levels in the body. Typical chemical analytical methods are generally costly, unstable, and time-consuming. Molecular imprinting (MI) technique, based on the “lock and key model†, could be a simple method to overcome those shortcomings. In this study, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was employed as a platform to fabricate MI biosensor for detection of macromolecules. I demonstrated that, when the monolayer was formed on a rough surface, this method was in fact templating molecules in three dimensions, and hence …

To capture the heavy tails and the volatility clustering of asset returns is always an important topic in Â…nancial market. We studies two projects related to the Alpha Stable distribution and Classical Tempered Stable(CTS) distribution respectively which both have desired properties to accommodate heavy-tails and capture skewness in Â…nancial series. (1) In the major part of the Â…rst project, we introduce the algorithm of indirect inference method. By using the skewed-t distribution as an auxiliary model which is easier to handle, we can estimate the parameters of the Alpha Stable distribution since these two models have the same numbers of …

A Spatio-Temporal Model Of Hunter-Gatherer Foraging Ecology Across The North American Great Plains Throughout The Paleoindian Period: Development Of Biological Theory And Statistical Methods To Link Human Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, And The Archaeological Record, Erik Roque Otárola-Castillo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Hunter-gatherers spread to nearly every corner of the planet in large part due to their flexible ability to forage for high-quality foods in diverse environments. The study of human foraging behavior is therefore crucial to understanding the proximate and ultimate factors that have shaped human evolutionary history. Although not necessarily in an evolutionary context, the foraging behavior of Paleoindian hunter-gatherers in North America has been studied for over a century. Researchers have paid particular attention to Paleoindian foragers’ hunting of big game across the grasslands of the Great Plains, shedding light on “what†prey Paleoindians foraged, “where†foraging occurred on …

The test set-up employed is a sand blasting machine and is an effort to duplicate the in-flight conditions especially those encountered in hot arid conditions. The technique adopted follows the Department of Defence test method standard. Carbon Composites have excellent stiffness, strength and low weight/density. The strength to weight ratio is …
The Art Of Democracy, George Seurat As A Mirror Of His Age, Lai Wei
The Art Of Democracy, George Seurat As A Mirror Of His Age, Lai Wei
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The thesis discuss about the ideal of democracy in the art of George Seurat, a French Post- Impressionist artist in late 19th Century. Seurat has been commonly read as an artist of “scientific†method. This paper explores the definition and perception of “science†in Seurat’s lived social historical environment. It also evaluates whether his methods are authentically scientific by examining his sources of his methods. My argument is instead of defining Seurat as scientific, “democratic†would be a more accurate description. Seurat’s democratic attitudes are demonstrated by his selection of subject matter, his methods of production, and the influence of …

Pathogenic And Non-Pathogenic Strains Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Long Island Sound: Biotic And Abiotic Factors Promoting Abundance, Jake Thickman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Food safety is a major concern in the shellfish industry, as severe illness can result from consuming shellfish that have accumulated waterborne pathogens. Shellfish harvesting areas are typically monitored for indicator bacteria such as fecal coliforms that serve as proxies for enteric pathogens introduced from surrounding waterways, but these indicators have shown little relation to some naturally occurring pathogenic bacteria such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp). To examine the dynamics and ecology of pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains of Vp and address the relevance of indicator bacteria in predicting Vp concentrations, field surveys and experiments were carried out in western Long Island …
The Syntax Of Address, Poppy M. Slocum
The Syntax Of Address, Poppy M. Slocum
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the role of the addressee in syntax, focusing on nominals that refer to addressees: vocatives (calls and addresses) and imperative subjects. Beginning with Moro (2003), generative analyses of vocatives have proposed that they are associated with functional projections at the left edge of or above CP. Such analyses are unable to account for the existence of mid-sentential addresses. I propose that vocatives (specifically addresses) are merged into the specifier of a functional projection, AddrP, which is located in the topic field of the CP domain (specifically between the highest TopP and FocP). This position correctly reflects that …

Investigating Cellular And Molecular Interactions Between The Hard Clam (Mercenaria Mercenaria) And Its Pathogen Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx), Rachel Hartman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Quahogs, or hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) are an economically important species of clam. They are often used for human consumption, but can also be indicators of water quality because of the bioaccumulation of contaminants within filter feeders. They are found abundantly on the east coast of the United States and Canada, and actively aquacultured from Massachusetts to Florida. The hard clam is a robust species with few naturally-occurring diseases. The most well-known disease of the hard clam is Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX), a unicellular parasite found on the east coast of North America from Virginia up into Canada, causing well-documented …

This thesis examines the role of women in the theatre during the Spanish Golden Age. Special emphasis is made to women in plays written by Lope de Vega, Calderón and Tirso de Molina. An analysis is made on how women as the protagonists, are portrayed in terms of ingenio and honor. The role of women in the comedia is influenced by their adventurous, daring and manipulative personalities. Whereas women in tragic plas (such as those dealing with honor) are viewed as victims of a patriarchal society that imposes a rigorous code of honor. This thesis also includes a short, but …
Clustering And Classification Methods For Prediction Of The Risk For Developing Disease, Hyejoo Lee
Clustering And Classification Methods For Prediction Of The Risk For Developing Disease, Hyejoo Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The purpose of this study is to develop a statistical model to predict the risk for developing disease. In order to enrich our general understanding of schizophrenia disorder, several clustering techniques are used as a preliminary study. Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous decease with great variability in symptoms, cognition, biology and course of illness. Some of this variability may be explained by latent subgroups that differ in etiology and key features. Individuals with paternal age related schizophrenia (PARS) may represent such a subgroup as evidence suggests a distinct symptom profile. Using K-means and hierarchical clustering on a large sample of schizophrenia …
Response To Monetary And Social Feedback During Development: Associations With Depressive Symptomatology And Risk, Jennifer Nicole Bress
Response To Monetary And Social Feedback During Development: Associations With Depressive Symptomatology And Risk, Jennifer Nicole Bress
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Depression represents a major public health concern, with particularly harmful effects in children. Existing interventions show relatively low response rates and high relapse rates, and there has been a recent effort to identify biomarkers of depression that may improve interventions and guide the way for novel treatments. One potential biomarker is the neural response to reward. However, existing studies typically focus on monetary reward, which may be less relevant to children and adolescents than social feedback. The current study focused on the feedback negativity (FN), an event-related potential (ERP) typically elicited by monetary feedback, in the context of a novel, …
Complementarity In The Structure And Dynamics Of Protein-Dna Search And Recognition: A Multiscale Modeling Study, Kevin E. Hauser
Complementarity In The Structure And Dynamics Of Protein-Dna Search And Recognition: A Multiscale Modeling Study, Kevin E. Hauser
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Transcription factors (TF) interact with DNA to regulate gene expression by specifically binding one or two sequences out of millions of possible sites in a genome. Sequence specific binding (recognition) arises from two mechanisms: amino acid-nucleobase H-bonding (direct readout), and sequence-dependent DNA deformability and structure (indirect readout). These lead to tight, specific binding. TFs can also rapidly search for their target by attaching to any sequence and then sliding along DNA. This decreases the space through which a TF randomly walks to stumble on the target. Tight binding and rapid sliding are optimized because TFs can switch between different DNA-binding …

In 2014, an estimated 480,000 people developed MDR-TB and 190,000 people died as a result of it. Approximately 9.7 % of people with MDR-TB are estimated to have XDR-TB. With the increase in the number of MDR-TB and XDR-TB cases, there is a dire need for the development of new anti-TB agents with novel mechanism of action. FtsZ, a crucial bacterial cytokinesis protein is a potential target for the development of new anti-TB agents. Previously a library of 2,5,6- and 2,5,7-trisubstituted benzimidazoles were synthesized and tested for their anti-TB activity. The lead molecules inhibited the assembly of Mycobacterium tuberculosis FtsZ …
