Harmonizing Multinational Parent Company Liability For Foreign Subsidiary Human Rights Violations, Vivian Grosswald Curran Dec 2016

Harmonizing Multinational Parent Company Liability For Foreign Subsidiary Human Rights Violations, Vivian Grosswald Curran

Chicago Journal of International Law

A notable development in recent years has been the ubiquity of the giant multinational corporation and its ability, through legal structures, to insulate itself from liability for the conduct of its foreign subsidiaries. In effect, multinational corporations simultaneously become legally invisible in their home states while potentially present through subsidiaries in innumerable other states. This Article focuses on multinational corporations whose parent companies are at home in a developed country while their subsidiaries operate in states in the developing world, and specifically where the foreign subsidiaries are alleged to have violated norms of universal human rights. It examines current legal theory …

(Non-) Speech Acts: The Performative Power Of Silence, Jane Chin Davidson Dec 2016

(Non-) Speech Acts: The Performative Power Of Silence, Jane Chin Davidson

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Judgment of accented speech as “inferior English” or “immigrant speech” reinforces an aural type of racial discrimination, especially in the political context of education and the state. The institutional silencing of “defective” speech substantiates the practice of self-silencing in which the (non-) speech act functions as a phenomenological engagement and as a non-performativity of racial difference.

Leveraging A Teacher Mentorship Program In A Complex System, Jami L. Holbein Swanson Dec 2016

Leveraging A Teacher Mentorship Program In A Complex System, Jami L. Holbein Swanson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

The support a beginning teacher receives varies from school to school, and from district to district. When beginning teachers are not supported, their learning as teachers is not maximized. New teacher induction is the strategy most school districts employ to support new-hires. Current scholarship suggests the terms induction and mentor program are often used interchangeably, but actually have very different definitions. Mentors programs are one component of a comprehensive induction program; where as, an induction program is a series of events or activities in the beginning years of a teacher’s career. Effectively leveraging the mentorship program in a complex system …

Development Of Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensor Using The Template Deposited Nickel Modified Ito Electrode, V Ganesh Dec 2016

Development Of Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensor Using The Template Deposited Nickel Modified Ito Electrode, V Ganesh

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

Glucose sensors attract a great deal of attention due to the practical medical needs and applications. In this paper, we propose a simple methodology to modify semiconductor substrate such as indium tin oxide (ITO) in order to develop a non-enzymatic sensor for glucose detection. The proposed strategy involves a chemical modification of ITO electrode through electrodeposition of nickel and further by using electrochemical potential cycling in alkaline medium. Electrodeposition of nickel is carried out using two different methods. One involves the usage of nickel sulphamate electroplating bath in the absence of any template and the other comprises using a hexagonal …

Studies On Settlement Characteristics Of Lithomargic Clay Stabilized With Cement, Purushotham G. Sarvade Dr

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

The lithomargic clay (shedi soil) is the name given to the locally available silty sand, which is present in between weathered laterite and hard granite gneiss throughout the Konkan belt of Southern India. As long as this soil is confined and dry, there is no problem, but on the exposure in a cutting or when it is exposed to water, it loses its strength drastically. Hence, modification of this soil is necessary to reduce settlement and improve the bearing capacity. In the present investigation, Ordinary Portland cement was used as a stabilizer to improve the soil. The investigation revealed that …

An Introduction To Serbian Piano Music: Musical And Cultural Influences On Three Selected Composers, Jelena Djukic

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Serbia is a country that has survived many political and religious conflicts. Perhaps the best way to describe Serbian culture and tradition would be a country whose inhabitants struggled for many years, yet managed to incorporate the best elements of its conquerors’ cultures. Serbian musical identity is an amalgam of local and international influences and styles.

Different foreign authorities occupied this country for centuries. The Danube River was the main border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, located in the north, and the Turkish Ottoman Empire, situated south of the Danube. The Austro-Hungarian influences on Serbian music are most evident in piano …

Language Evaluation: Classical Arabic Approaches, Abdulkareem Said Ramadan Dec 2016

Language Evaluation: Classical Arabic Approaches, Abdulkareem Said Ramadan

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

This article explores the criteria and standards of literary evaluation as used by linguists in the Arabic literary tradition. Linguists did not apply such standards for instructional purposes only, but they also used them to assess poetic aesthetics. Because poetry was the primary context in which language was assessed, this linguistic evaluation appeared in various forms throughout poetry criticism. For example, giving preference to one poet over another meant the poet had reached a more superior linguistic level according to the standards that linguists followed in their judgments. These standards, which linguists in the Arabic literary tradition used, were not …

Dilation Behavior Of Thermal Spray Coatings, Miryan Lorena Bejarano Dec 2016

Dilation Behavior Of Thermal Spray Coatings, Miryan Lorena Bejarano

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Thermal Spray (TS) is a very versatile manufacturing process to deposit thick coatings on a variety of substrates. Coatings are used in protective (i.e. wear, chemical attack, high temperature, etc.) and functional (i.e. sensors) applications. TS coatings have a unique lamellar microstructure as a result of the overlapping of millions of molten and partially-molten particles. During processing, high deformation by impact, high temperature, and rapid solidification lead to a complex hierarchical material system that contains a high amount of microstructural defects. The presence of defects in the microstructure contribute to differences in property values in comparison to bulk materials. Thermal …

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan Dec 2016

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Although transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is extremely powerful at the characterization of materials on the nano- and atomic scales, the advantages introduce accompanying drawbacks. That is, high energy electrons offer the structural information while imparting radiation damage to the samples. Metal organic frameworks are a new class of materials that have potential applications in gas storage and catalysis. A direct imaging of their lattice structures is highly desired. However, these samples are extremely radiation sensitive. In order to characterize their structures, low-dose TEM need to be performed. To date, there is a lack of a systematic of radiation study of …

On The Fracture Toughness And Crack Growth Resistance Of Bio-Inspired Thermal Spray Hybrid Composites, Michael Murray Resnick Dec 2016

On The Fracture Toughness And Crack Growth Resistance Of Bio-Inspired Thermal Spray Hybrid Composites, Michael Murray Resnick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nature has presented a remarkable bill of materials which show excellent mechanical properties. Among those which have been extensively studied are wood, bone, rocks, spider silk, nacre etc. Interestingly all of these materials are primarily known to have great fracture resistance and present excellent example of natural and layer-by-layer evolution of materials. These materials have inspired the current research society to synthesize new generation materials with mechanical properties beyond the conventional materials such as metal, ceramic and polymers. Nacre, one of the most researched natural materials, is present in particular sea-shells and shows a layered brick-and-mortar structure. Designing nacre-like structures …

Application Of Lattice Boltzmann Methods In Complex Mass Transfer Systems, Ning Sun Dec 2016

Application Of Lattice Boltzmann Methods In Complex Mass Transfer Systems, Ning Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is a novel computational fluid dynamics method that can easily handle complex and dynamic boundaries, couple local or interfacial interactions/reactions, and be easily parallelized allowing for simulation of large systems. While most of the current studies in LBM mainly focus on fluid dynamics, however, the inherent power of this method makes it an ideal candidate for the study of mass transfer systems involving complex/dynamic microstructures and local reactions. In this thesis, LBM is introduced to be an alternative computational method for the study of electrochemical energy storage systems (Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and electric double layer capacitors …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With exponential hike in greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of fossil fuels, advancing renewable energy technology is the best available answer to global demands of clean and green energy. Solar Photovoltaic technology, although implemented worldwide, has a large further scope of improvement to create a fully accepted solar-powered society. One such concept can be a DC based photovoltaic system, which enables the use of DC power directly from solar panels without incorporating inverters. This thesis is based on a system-level PV project, which evaluates a newly installed DC direct-coupled system which uses DC power for office LED lighting, in comparison …

The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu Dec 2016

The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polymer nanocomposites have been widely used in many fields. By introducing nanoparticles as fillers, researchers are able to get reinforced materials and new materials with novel properties, such as stronger mechanics, enhanced optical properties and improved conductivity. Though experimental techniques have rapidly advanced to enable better control of materials at atomic level, there is still a lack of a fundamental understanding of the dynamics and structure-properties relations in polymer nanocomposites. In this thesis, we use computer simulations to study the molecular structure and connections between microstate to macro properties of a variety of nanocomposites. Our goal is to understand the …
