Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder
Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder
English Theses - Archive
While the representations of women in video games have remained disappointingly negative since the 1980s, America’s political shift from the presidencies of George W. Bush to Barack Obama in 2007 had important cultural implications, particularly impacting the representation of women in popular culture. This thesis will examine the cultural depictions of women from 2002-2011, providing a particular focus on the unique cultural factors prevalent during this time period—including the expansion of pornography, a conservative cultural backlash to Obama, and the rapid deterioration of ‘political correctness’—that impacted how images of women in video games were received. Analyzing the cultural atmosphere of …
The World In The Screen: How The Mobile Device Symbolizes Technogenesis, Joel Mathew Morrow
The World In The Screen: How The Mobile Device Symbolizes Technogenesis, Joel Mathew Morrow
English Theses - Archive
The smart phone, or mobile device, holds a preeminent role in a technologically advanced society. These devices allow for connection, productivity, and distraction, and in doing so create new anxieties and underscore old ones. By tracing the provenance of this artifact, we see how our relationship with mobile devices amplifies our relationship with technology as a whole. This thesis examines the development of the mobile device from the viewpoints of social constructivism and technogenesis to illustrate how our increasing intimacy with these devices is part of a long-standing pattern of co-evolution between humans and the technologies they create.

The English Fire Courts And The American Right To Civil Jury Trial, Jay Tidmarsh
The English Fire Courts And The American Right To Civil Jury Trial, Jay Tidmarsh
University of Chicago Law Review
This Article uncovers the history of a longforgotten English court system, the "fire courts," which Parliament established to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants in urban areas destroyed in catastrophic fires. One of the fire courts' remarkable features was the delegation of authority to judges to adjudicate disputes without juries. Because the Seventh Amendment's right to a federal civil jury trial depends in part on the historical practice of English courts in 1791, this delegation bears directly on the present power of Congress to abrogate the use ofjuries in federal civil litigation. Parliament enacted firecourts legislation on eight occasions between …

Student Voice: Perceptions Of Teacher Expectations Among First And Second Generation Vietnamese And Mexican Students, Sara Gandarilla
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This qualitative research study explored the perceptions first and second generation Vietnamese and Mexican high school students hold on teacher expectations based on their racial identity. Specifically, this study explores the critical concepts of stereotype threat, halo effect, and self-fulfilling prophecy. The primary purpose of this investigation was to enhance the understanding of how the perception students have impacts success or lack of success for two different student groups. This study utilizes interviews with student focus groups to examine student perceptions of teacher expectations among Vietnamese and Mexican students and its impact on student academic performance, the general nature of …

Assessment Of Changes In Riverine Nitrate In The Sesan, Srepok And Sekong Tributaries Of The Lower Mekong River Basin, Chanta Oeurng, Thomas A. Cochrane, Mauricio E. Arias, Bikesh Shrestha, Thanapon Piman
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Changes in nitrates are of particular concern in tropical regions undergoing rapid development, as these changes may affect local and downstream riverine ecosystems. This study assessed the spatial and temporal differences in nitrate loads within the Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong (3S) Rivers, the largest tributaries of the Mekong River. Simulation results from a flow and nitrate calibrated SWAT model show large differences in year-to-year nitrate loads, a strong seasonality, and clear variability patterns in monthly nitrate loads in the 3S outlet during the wet season. The annual total nitrate loading from the 3S Rivers account for approximately 30% of the …

More Than Target 6.3: A Systems Approach To Rethinking Sustainable Development Goals In A Resource-Scarce World, Qiong Zhang, Christine Prouty, Julie B. Zimmerman, James Mihelcic
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines 17 individual Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that guide the needs of practice for many professional disciplines around the world, including engineering, research, policy, and development. The SDGs represent commitments to reduce poverty, hunger, ill health, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation. If a typical reductionist approach is employed to address and optimize individual goals, it may lead to a failure in technological, policy, or managerial development interventions through unintended consequences in other goals. This study uses a systems approach to understand the fundamental dynamics between the …

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
This study investigated the influence of: (1) judges’ political ideology as measured by party-of-the- appointing president and DW-nominate scores; and (2) legal precedent as measured by voting which occurred before or after the 1991 amendments to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on judges’ liberal and conservative voting between 1964 and 2015 at the United States Court of Appeals in Title VII national origin decisions impacting K-16 education, using binary logistic regression as its main statistical tool. The principal findings for this group of K-16 decisions are: (1) ideology, as determined by party-of -appointing president, is an effective predictor of …
The “New Insiders”: Rethinking Independent Directors’ Tenure, Yaron Nili
The “New Insiders”: Rethinking Independent Directors’ Tenure, Yaron Nili
UC Law Journal
Director independence is a cornerstone of modern corporate governance. Regulators, scholars, companies, and shareholders have all placed a strong emphasis on director independence as a means to ensure that investors’ interests in their companies are well served. But what makes a director independent? While regulators and stock exchanges have tackled this elusive standard in different ways, the end goal is always the sameensuring that the director is able to exercise truly independent judgment and further the best interests of shareholders. Surprisingly, these regulatory bodies have failed to consider the impact board tenure might have on director independence. This Article seeks …

Studying The Use Of Hidden Markov Models In The Detection And Classification Of Eeg Epileptiform Transients Using Lpc Features, Kartikeya Shrikant Bagalore
All Theses
The process of identifying the presence of an AEP (Abnormal Epileptiform Paroxysmal) in a subject's EEG, normally done by neurologist experts, is a particularly long one and involves considerable financial expenses. This research aims to pave an automatic method of detecting and classifying streams of EEGs as to whether or not it has any AEPs present in it. This is a two step process, where step 1 is the classification problem and step 2 is the detection problem. There are many different activities on the EEGs, and the classification task helps to identify which of these activities are AEPs. So, …

A Self-Regulated Learning Inventory Based On A Six-Dimensional Model Of Srl, Christopher Nuttall
A Self-Regulated Learning Inventory Based On A Six-Dimensional Model Of Srl, Christopher Nuttall
Theses and Dissertations
This report discusses a study undertaken to develop, pilot, and tentatively validate a self- regulated learning (SRL) inventory for L2 contexts. This inventory was specifically designed to measure learners' ability to self-regulate their learning. Although there have been a few SRL inventories developed to measure this ability, they do not conform to the six-dimensional SRL model proposed by educational psychologists and backed by extensive research. This warranted the development of a new SRL inventory. The primary focus of this study was that of taking initial steps to develop such an inventory. These steps involved writing and refining items conforming to …

Mythbusting Park Chung Hee: A Reexamination Of Park And His Coup, Justin Malzac
Mythbusting Park Chung Hee: A Reexamination Of Park And His Coup, Justin Malzac
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Park Chung-Hee is a divisive figure. For some he is a saint that rescued his country from the brink of collapse and helped it rise into modernity. For others he is a devil, an iron-fisted dictator who cared more about his own power than his people. Both of these are politically slanted myths promoted as part of a corresponding political agenda. But even politically neutral writings on Park unwittingly conduct a mythmaking of their own. This paper is an attempt to show that Park Chung-Hee has become a mythological figure in Korean history because the scope of his power, agency …
Implementation And Testing Of A Book Lookup System For The Robert E. Kennedy Library, Casey C. Sheehan
Implementation And Testing Of A Book Lookup System For The Robert E. Kennedy Library, Casey C. Sheehan
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The goal of this senior project centered around improving the quality of student and teacher experiences when visiting the library. The task of finding a book amongst the shelves is an arduous one, which I felt could be improved upon through implementation and testing of a Book Lookup system for the Cal Poly Robert E. Kennedy Library. Development for this project was done using a Python framework. Testing and earlier designs were also created using JavaScript and PHP. Repeated tests were conducted on the accuracy of the software and its ability to decrease user search-time when compared to conventional methods.
