Favorable Outcomes Of Lvad As Bridge To Simultaneous Heart-Kidney Transplantation, Vinay Thohan, Ghulam Murtaza, Carlos O. Encarnacion, Nasir Sulemanjee, Omar Cheema, Thomas Hastings, Chi Cho, Frank Downey, John Crouch
The VAD Journal
Background
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an established risk factor for incident cardiovascular disease and progression of heart failure disease state, and is associated with decreased survival after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy or heart transplantation (HT). Combined heart-kidney transplantation (HKT) compared with isolated HT recently has been shown to have survival advantage among patients whose estimated glomerular filtration rate is less than 37 ml/min/m2. Data on LVAD to HKT are limited.
Methods
At our center, a total of 803 patients have received HT, 594 patients LVAD therapy, and 23 patients HKT from single donors; of those …

Mechanical And Physical Characterization Of Foams Made Of Gelatinized Starch And Pre-Polymer Polyurethane, Baxter J. Lansing
Mechanical And Physical Characterization Of Foams Made Of Gelatinized Starch And Pre-Polymer Polyurethane, Baxter J. Lansing
Theses
Previous work in this field of research has proven that the intrinsic properties of native starch can be modified to have desirable traits. For example there are two widely researched natural properties of native starch: physically brittle and hydrophilic. Researchers have been successful at mixing native starch with various polyols or water to yield a modified starch with viscoelastic behavior. Furthermore low miscibility of native starch with other polymers has made it the topic of polymer blend studies to help alleviate its hydrophilic nature.
For this study materials were selected based on both previous research and ability to create test …

An Introduction To Building Contracts: An Irish Context, Tony Cunningham

A contract is an agreement which is capable of being enforced at law and whose essential characteristic is that of a bargain. Contract law focuses predominantly on commercial transactions and in the construction context these range from simple every-day transactions such as purchasing a box of nails to procuring multi-million euro building facilities. In Ireland construction clients typically engage designers and quantity surveyors to formulate designs and they subsequently contract with building contractors to construct the designs. The contractors, in turn, typically outsource much of the work to subcontractors and order materials from numerous suppliers. All of these activities involve …

Immigration is, and always has been, a hot issue. And it’s gotten even hotter in the last few years, both in Europe and in the U.S. More times than not, this topic seems to be discussed in emotional rather than rational terms. That is why we need scholars who look closely at the facts and tell us what we really need to know.
One of those scholars is Dr. Els de Graauw. An assistant professor in the Department of Political Science in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College, de Graauw has an interesting personal sto- ry …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
Aristotle once said that “the aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”. To me this means that we do not create art in order to show the objects or subject matter as is, but instead to show what the subject matter means to us or how we interpret it. The work that I create isn’t necessarily representational. Instead it takes a more abstract form of the object that I’m trying to interpret.
Color explored in painting is another way to express emotions and a sense of feeling. Using a variety of …

Examining Style In Virgin Branch Corrugated Ceramics, Shannon Horton, Karen Harry
Anthropology Faculty Research
In this article, we examine variation in the corrugation styles of ceramics from the Virgin Branch Puebloan culture. These ceramics were recovered from two regions: the Moapa Valley of southern Nevada and the Mt. Dellenbaugh area of northwestern Arizona. Three wares—Shivwits, Moapa, and Tusayan—are examined, each of which was produced in different locations. Similarities and differences in corrugation styles between these wares are used to investigate ceramic learning frameworks and the nature of the pottery production and distribution system.

Age and lack of time was a constant problem for my family and a personal concern for myself growing up, maybe because I am the only person in my family under the age of 55. Lack of energy became neglect for my family’s 142-year-old farm and 40-year-old tire business. Growing up, I became all too familiar with visions of decay in what once had been a thriving place of growth and order.
My aging family’s lack of energy was a main ingredient in the state of decay but economic flux and failure to keep up with the times were also …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
I have a great love of both music and art. As I have sampled different medias, I have been looking for one that will allow me to reconcile the two, and so I have taken an interest in creating package designs and album artwork for CDs. This also allows me to work in my love of illustration and typography, and combine them into a product that is a bridge between art and music. For my imagery, I target scenes of familiarity. I like to work with things we see so often that they blend into the background because they automatically …

The Qualitative Report
This auto-ethnographic study describes a practical application of qualitative research skills in an intensive writing retreat. The retreat was held in response to an inadequate dissertation defense just three weeks before final university deadline for graduation. It uses narrative and double- storytelling to step in and out of the experience of a debriefing process that put the writer in a vulnerable position with a critical friend. The reality of not completing the PhD demanded aggressive and immediate action – an intense commitment to critical analysis of the dissertation. The reflective self-study of the writing retreat experience describes the significance of …

The Qualitative Report
This study developed after I read numerous research journals created by my doctoral students. At times, students included considerable amounts of detail, reflecting on their research processes and their roles as researchers. At other times, the journals appeared to be a mere afterthought, seemingly completed in an evening to satisfy the requirement and get a grade. And, as with many things in the introductory qualitative research course, students expressed a need for more structured guidelines for their journals. In response, I developed a set of guidelines and prompts students could use to guide their journal entries. With this study, I …

Physiological Study To Investigate The Activity Of An Aqueous Extract Ofcinnamomum Cassiabark On The Blood Glucose Levels In Healthy And Diabetic Rats Induced By Streptozotocin (Stz), Qussay Noori Raddam Al-Muhammadi
Baghdad Science Journal
The present study was investigated the activity of aqueous extract from Cinnamomum cassia bark on the blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic rats induced by Streptozotcin (STZ). In healthy rats, the blood glucose levels were slightly decreased after six hours of single oral administration with dose (25 mg/kg) of body weight, as well as four weeks after twice daily repeated oral administration of aqueous extract of Cinnamomum cassia bark. In streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, we observed a high significant decrease (p<0.05) in blood glucose levels, after four weeks of oral administration of aqueous extract (25 mg/kg). And blood glucose levels seem to be normal after the period of treatment. Glibenclamide was used as a standard drug to compare the aqueous extract in lowering blood glucose levels. Giving healthy rats led to a significant increase (p<0.05) in body weight, whereas diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in body weight. Also, in this study, we determined the extract's activity on lipid profile, liver enzymes (ALT, AST), creatinine, and urea in the serum of experimental rats. Results showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, and VLDL-C concentrations in diabetic rats, and after treatment with aqueous extract, a significant decrease was observed for all of the parameters. Additionally, non-significant differences were observed in creatinine, urea, and insulin concentration in healthy and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. This is approved that there are no side effects of aqueous extract on kidney and insulin secretion or concentration. In this study, our conclusion is that the aqueous extract of Cinnamomum cassia bark works as antihyperglycemic without any changes in insulin concentration.
