Higher Ed Sees Decline In Language Studies., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Dec 2016

Higher Ed Sees Decline In Language Studies., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Despite much talk about the importance of globalization,

the very places where most people in

the U.S. learn foreign languages – colleges and universities

– are offering fewer and fewer courses in

them. In a report published last year by the Modern

Languages Association (MLA), statistics show that

for the first time since 1995 we are seeing a drop

in enrollment in courses in all major European languages,

including Spanish. And the drop is significant:

6.7 percent overall since 2009 after increasing

steadily since 1995.

Spanish, the most studied language in colleges

and universities (more than all other languages

combined), …

The Annual Black Friday Flyer Weigh-In, Janine Talbot Dec 2016

The Annual Black Friday Flyer Weigh-In, Janine Talbot

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

A couple of years ago I started a new tradition. It's called the Black Friday Flyer Weigh-In. I find it funny - in that "Are you kidding me?" way and not so much in a ha-ha way - that we get not one, but two newspapers that we're not even subscribed to on Thanksgiving Day, both stuffed with advertisements from some of the most, and least, interesting places. I became curious over the amount of paper wasted, trees ripped out of the ground, and ink splayed over the surface of this printed wasteland. I'm still on paper, so don't expect …

Investigations Into The Effects Of Water Exchange And The Structure Of Lanthanide Chelates, Katherine Marie Payne Dec 2016

Investigations Into The Effects Of Water Exchange And The Structure Of Lanthanide Chelates, Katherine Marie Payne

Dissertations and Theses

Lanthanide chelates are effective agents for improving contrast in MR images. Optimizing the relaxation of inner sphere water molecules is a common focus of research in this field. However, the efforts to design an optimal contrast agent have commonly over-looked the relationship of water position and water exchange kinetics. This work explores structural conformation, the impact of very fast water exchange kinetics on hydration, and differing tumbling rates for regioisomers of a number of lanthanide chelates. We have grown crystals of LnDOTMA and obtained structural data by X-ray diffraction that provide a picture of the chelate during water exchange and …

Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe Dec 2016

Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe

Dissertations and Theses

Problem alcohol use has far-reaching economic, intra-, and interpersonal consequences. One particularly hazardous form of drinking pertains to the consumption of alcohol as a means of regulating stress, or drinking to cope. As such, it is critical to identify pathways through which stress-related alcohol use occurs, as well as protective factors which may mitigate the aforementioned consequences. To achieve this, I conducted three studies examining these topics at multiple levels of analysis among two at risk populations for engaging in problematic drinking: College students and military service members. Study 1 is a published manuscript examining the association between personality, a …

Understanding The Importance Of Intermittently Fragmented Stream Habitat For Isolated Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Lewisi) In The Colville National Forest, Washington, Forrest Michael Carpenter Dec 2016

Understanding The Importance Of Intermittently Fragmented Stream Habitat For Isolated Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Lewisi) In The Colville National Forest, Washington, Forrest Michael Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

Climate change and anthropogenic effects have vastly reduced Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi, WCT) habitat throughout their range, including the Colville National Forest in northeastern Washington where this study was conducted. Many native salmonid populations have declined in abundance since the early 1900s due to a variety of climate- and human-driven forces. Westslope Cutthroat Trout are especially sensitive to habitat loss or degradation and to climate change. Together, climate change, habitat degradation, and non-native salmonid invasions are contributing to increasingly fragmented WCT populations. Ongoing and predicted future warming trends are expected to further fragment these populations and …
