Multilevel Perspective On High-Order Harmonic Generation In Solids, Mengxi Wu, Dana A. Browne, Kenneth J. Schafer, Mette B. Gaarde Dec 2016

Multilevel Perspective On High-Order Harmonic Generation In Solids, Mengxi Wu, Dana A. Browne, Kenneth J. Schafer, Mette B. Gaarde

Faculty Publications

We investigate high-order harmonic generation in a solid, modeled as a multilevel system dressed by a strong infrared laser field. We show that the cutoff energies and the relative strengths of the multiple plateaus that emerge in the harmonic spectrum can be understood both qualitatively and quantitatively by considering a combination of adiabatic and diabatic processes driven by the strong field. Such a model was recently used to interpret the multiple plateaus exhibited in harmonic spectra generated by solid argon and krypton [G. Ndabashimiye, Nature 534, 520 (2016)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/nature17660]. We also show that when the multilevel system originates from the Bloch …

Decadal Changes In Bathymetry Of The Yangtze River Estuary: Human Impacts And Potential Saltwater Intrusion, Shuaihu Wu, Heqin Cheng, Y. Jun Xu, Jiufa Li, Shuwei Zheng Dec 2016

Decadal Changes In Bathymetry Of The Yangtze River Estuary: Human Impacts And Potential Saltwater Intrusion, Shuaihu Wu, Heqin Cheng, Y. Jun Xu, Jiufa Li, Shuwei Zheng

Faculty Publications

This study analyzed bathymetric changes of the 77-km Yangtze River Estuary in China over the past ten years in order to understand the impacts of recent human activities on the estuary of a large alluvial river. Morphological changes were assessed by analyzing digitized bathymetric data of the estuarine channels from 2002 to 2013. Additionally, multi-beam bathymetric measurements made in 2012, 2014 and 2015 were utilized to investigate microtophographic bedforms of the lower reach of the estuary. Our results showed that the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River Estuary experienced substantial channel bed erosion in the past 10 years, …

Cause For Question: Risk And Postmodern Panic In The Vaccine Safety Debate, Marygrace Trifilio Dec 2016

Cause For Question: Risk And Postmodern Panic In The Vaccine Safety Debate, Marygrace Trifilio

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the thoughts and feelings of non-vaccinating parents in America and argues that contemporary vaccine refusal results from overwhelming information saturation in the Internet age. Non-vaccinating parents express distrust of competing scientific research and call for a return to a more natural, toxin-free lifestyle.

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Perceptions Of Value-Added Measurement And Teacher Job Satisfaction, Meagan A. Viar Dec 2016

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Perceptions Of Value-Added Measurement And Teacher Job Satisfaction, Meagan A. Viar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Educational leaders are struggling with the issue of academic reform as it pertains to accountability for student achievement. With increasing pressures to improve student achievement, many states have adopted value-added measures to monitor student growth and teacher effectiveness. This study undertook a quantitative approach to examine the relationship between teacher perceptions of value-added evaluations, teachers' three-year mean value-added scores, and teacher job satisfaction using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVAs). The four major questions posed in this study are as follows: 1) What are selected TN teachers' perceptions of the TVAAS-based teacher evaluation system in terms of fairness, accuracy, understandability, and …

Converting Clinician To Educator: Preparation For Dental Education By Continuing Professional Education, Lynn Samons Russell Dec 2016

Converting Clinician To Educator: Preparation For Dental Education By Continuing Professional Education, Lynn Samons Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Healthcare education is of the utmost importance for all individuals in our society. Those that teach in healthcare professional programs are often unprepared for the challenges that are present. Ill-prepared educators may or may not provide a quality education to those students who will eventually care for us. This research addresses this problem by questioning dental and dental hygiene educators currently involved in educating students. It further focuses on the manner in which the interviewed individuals have been prepared to offer instruction and whether that preparation has been adequate. Data was obtained by semi-structured interviews of dental educators who had …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. Both search modes use several event categories in order to increase the sensitivity to new physics. These categories are based on the rapidity of the …

Evaluation Of A Group-Based Resilience Intervention For Typhoon Haiyan Survivors, Ma. Regina Hechanova, Pia Anna P. Ramos, Lynn Waelde Dec 2016

Evaluation Of A Group-Based Resilience Intervention For Typhoon Haiyan Survivors, Ma. Regina Hechanova, Pia Anna P. Ramos, Lynn Waelde

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

This study evaluated the impact of Katatagan, a culturally adapted, group-based, and mindfulness-informed resilience intervention developed for disaster survivors in the Philippines. The intervention aimed to teach six adaptive coping skills: harnessing strengths, managing physical reactions, managing thoughts and emotions, seeking solutions and support, identifying positive activities, and planning for the future. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted with 163 Typhoon Haiyan survivors. Six-month follow-up assessments were obtained for 37 participants. Pre- and post-results showed improvements in participants’ self-efficacy on all six coping skills. The 6-month follow-up revealed significant improvements in four of the six coping skills. Focus group discussions …

Efficiency From Added Control And Root Cut Out In Infinite Blade Rotorcraft, Brian D. Mincks, David Peters Dec 2016

Efficiency From Added Control And Root Cut Out In Infinite Blade Rotorcraft, Brian D. Mincks, David Peters

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

A dynamic inflow based induced power model for a lifting rotor with an infinite number of blades is analyzed to reveal efficiency of a rotorcraft in forward flight. The model starts from first principals to relate the acceleration potential of an actuator disk to pressure on the lifting blade. Peters and He Ref [3] note that this model provides “overall good correlation with recent measurement data” (xix). This model is extended with the addition of harmonic control, radial control, and root cut out (rco). The addition of these three factors reveal ways to approach the minimum induced power as predicted …
