Nia Darville, Nia Darville
Fall 2016
“I have always been passionate about helping children overcome the challenges that prevent them from learning. For this reason, I thought teaching would be a perfect fit for me, until my new Best Friend threw me a curveball.”
Meet Nia Darville, a vibrant transfer student who has quite the story of how she found her way to southwest Michigan and the campus of Andrews University. She is quick to admit that initially, coming out of high school, Andrews did not make the list of her top candidates for higher education, but in serendipitous fashion, Andrews University came back into view. …

Over the past decade, the visualization for cybersecurity (VizSec) research community has adapted many information visualization techniques to support the critical work of cyber analysts. While these efforts have yielded many specialized tools and platforms, the community lacks a unified approach to the design and implementation of these systems. In this work, we provide a retrospective analysis of the past decade of VizSec publications, with an eye toward developing a more cohesive understanding of the emerging patterns of design:
• We identify common thematic groupings among existing work, as well as interesting patterns of design around the utilization of various …

Evaluating Lithology As An Erosional Control On A Fluviokarst System In Northeastern Kentucky, Andrew K. Francis
Evaluating Lithology As An Erosional Control On A Fluviokarst System In Northeastern Kentucky, Andrew K. Francis
Theses and Dissertations
Longitudinal stream profiles can be used to evaluate landscape evolution. Lithology as a control on a stream profile is especially of interests because fluviokarst systems are characterized by the contact of carbonate and non-carbonate rocks at the surface. Due to the difference in weathering processes between carbonates and non-carbonate rocks, it is likely that there is a difference in their rates of erosion. Cave Branch and its tributary Horn Hollow, are fluviokarst systems located in northeastern Kentucky. This area is primarily comprised of sandstone and limestone. The objectives of this study were to determine if variation in lithology was creating …

Rewriting The Sentence In First-Year Composition: Pedagogies And Perspectives, June G. Newton
Rewriting The Sentence In First-Year Composition: Pedagogies And Perspectives, June G. Newton
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Many college students arrive in first-year composition classrooms lacking sufficient sentence-level proficiency. Although syntactically challenged writers are often evaluated harshly in academic, professional, and other writing contexts, sentence-based pedagogies that can help students write more clearly and effectively have been sidelined in composition studies amid grammar debates and theoretical divergences within the discipline. This capstone examines how writing instructors have recognized the rhetorical function of sentence-based pedagogies from the classical era to the present, including those extolled by Robert Connors in “The Erasure of the Sentence”: Francis Christensen’s generative rhetoric, classical imitation practices, and sentence-combining exercises. These methods, used widely …
Evaluation Of The Therapeutic Management Of Childhood Diarrhea, Ana Francisca Diallo
Evaluation Of The Therapeutic Management Of Childhood Diarrhea, Ana Francisca Diallo
Doctoral Dissertations
Therapeutic management of childhood diarrhea had led to a significant decrease in diarrhea related morbidity and mortality. However, diarrhea diseases remain one of the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide, especially in children under 5 years. The work presented in this dissertation intended to evaluate the current the management of childhood diarrhea, to identify the major gaps in the management and introduce a novel approach to address these gaps. First, an assessment of oral rehydration therapies (ORT) coverage in the management of childhood diarrhea is performed to evaluate healthcare providers’ prescriptive practices of ORT in South Asia. Next, we assess …

Applying Multiple Data Collection Tools To Quantify Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Communication On Twitter., Philip M. Massey, Amy Leader, Elad Yom-Tov, Alexandra Budenz, Kara Fisher, Ann C. Klassen
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. There are several vaccines that protect against strains of HPV most associated with cervical and other cancers. Thus, HPV vaccination has become an important component of adolescent preventive health care. As media evolves, more information about HPV vaccination is shifting to social media platforms such as Twitter. Health information consumed on social media may be especially influential for segments of society such as younger populations, as well as ethnic and racial minorities.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of our study were to quantify HPV vaccine communication on …

Assessing Readiness For Clinical Practice: Students’ Perspectives Of Their Veterinary Curriculum, L. Chris Sanchez, Alison Kwiatkowski, Jeff Abbott, Dana N. Zimmel, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein
The Qualitative Report
Studies describing the effectiveness of a veterinary curriculum from the student perspective are currently sparse. The overall purpose of this investigation was to describe students’ perceived preparedness for clinical practice. Three focus group meetings with fourth year veterinary students were conducted. Data were open-coded and categorized to identify themes. Four main themes emerged: Challenging communications, Un/appreciating curricular experiences, Documenting demands impede case involvement, and Hungering for timely, effective feedback. Overall students felt comfortable talking to clients about medicine but less comfortable discussing euthanasia or money; they appreciated the split clinical curriculum but questioned the value of the 1st/2nd year courses; …

“Hey, Nice Run!” Exploring Motives For Smartphone Exercise App Use, Michael S. Fuller
Doctoral Dissertations
The rapid pace at which smartphone applications are currently diffusing through society have made them a very popular form of media. Smartphone applications (commonly referred to as apps) allow users the ability to complete a variety of media functions such as receive news updates, sport scores, view television programs, and listen to the radio. Exercise apps are a sub category of smartphone apps which allow users to monitor their exercise progress through the Global Positioning System included in most smartphones. To date, the motives for exercise apps have not been examined within the framework of Uses and Gratifications. This essay …

Assessing The Performance Differences Between Hospitals With And Without Meaningful Use Of Electronic Health Records On Care Outcomes, Joseph G. Conte
Assessing The Performance Differences Between Hospitals With And Without Meaningful Use Of Electronic Health Records On Care Outcomes, Joseph G. Conte
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and Purpose of the Study: The U.S. healthcare system at $3 trillion, is the sixth largest economy in the world. The federal government is the largest purchaser of healthcare in the country. In the past decade it has been on a quest to refocus its purchasing from volume to value. While spending nearly double per capita than every other industrialized nation, U.S. healthcare outcomes are consistently in the lowest quartile for every major indicator from life expectancy to ambulatory sensitive conditions. The Crossing the Quality Chasm Report (IOM) focused a lens on the dearth of electronic health record (EHR) …

Epha2 Is A Functional Receptor For The Growth Factor Progranulin., Thomas Neill, Simone Buraschi, Atul Goyal, Catherine Sharpe, Elizabeth Natkanski, Liliana Schaefer, Andrea Morrione, Renato V. Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Although the growth factor progranulin was discovered more than two decades ago, the functional receptor remains elusive. Here, we discovered that EphA2, a member of the large family of Ephrin receptor tyrosine kinases, is a functional signaling receptor for progranulin. Recombinant progranulin bound with high affinity to EphA2 in both solid phase and solution. Interaction of progranulin with EphA2 caused prolonged activation of the receptor, downstream stimulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase and Akt, and promotion of capillary morphogenesis. Furthermore, we found an autoregulatory mechanism of progranulin whereby a feed-forward loop occurred in an EphA2-dependent manner that was independent of the …
