What Always-On Connected Consumers Can Teach Retailers About Marketing Relevancy And Segmentation, Donna M. Iucolano
What Always-On Connected Consumers Can Teach Retailers About Marketing Relevancy And Segmentation, Donna M. Iucolano
Student Scholarship
Nearly 50% of the U.S. population is described as always on, always present, and always connected, with the label always-on connected consumers (AOCCs) emerging as one of the most popular in practice. This consumer group is a powerful and influential part of the U.S. economy that will continue to grow and influence retailing even more than it does today. To better understand the shopping behavior of this group, we interviewed 40 hyper-digital men and women age 18 and 65 and collected more than 200 stories about their positive and negative shopping experiences. The findings describe who these consumers are and …
Changes In Male Hunting Returns, Raymond B. Hames
Changes In Male Hunting Returns, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Research on changes in male hunting among hunter-gatherers addresses two important issues in early human evolution: the nature of the family and trade-offs in mating and parenting effort as well as the development of embodied capital. In the hunter-gatherer literature, there is a debate about the function of male hunting that has implications for understanding the role males play in the evolution of the pair bond. The traditional model argues that male hunting and other economic activities are forms of male provisioning or parenting effort designed to enhance a man’s fitness through his wife’s reproduction and the survivorship of their …

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee
Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To promote sustainable development, the Coastal Zone Management Act prescribes that coastal areas should be divided into two levels of protection zones. However, the complexity and variety of coastal defenses and land use cannot be described completely by using these two levels alone. Coastal risk maps, based on natural and manmade characters of a region, showing different degrees of vulnerability and hazard potentials, can aid in making decisions. In this study, the criteria for coastal protection and land use in terms of risk maps were adopted. A tentative risk map was presented for the northern Kaohsiung City coastal area, Southwest …
Capability Of Geostationary Satellite Imagery For Sea Ice Monitoring In The Bohai And Yellow Seas, Hwa-Seon Lee, Kyu-Sung Lee
Capability Of Geostationary Satellite Imagery For Sea Ice Monitoring In The Bohai And Yellow Seas, Hwa-Seon Lee, Kyu-Sung Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
On a regional scale, sea ice monitoring is important for marine transportation, fishery, harbor and offshore structures, and weather forecast. In this study, we attempt to analyze the potential of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) images for regional-scale sea ice monitoring. GOCI images obtained from December 2011 to March 2012 were analyzed to evaluate the frequency that sea ice can be observed in the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea. In this season, the sea ice distribution varies greatly both temporally and spatially. During the approximate 100-day ice period, GOCI provided relatively cloud-free daily images over sea ice 86% …
A Computational Study On Sensor Localization For Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network In The East Sea Environmental Model, Jinyoung Choi, Kiseon Kim, Sung Chan Jun
A Computational Study On Sensor Localization For Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network In The East Sea Environmental Model, Jinyoung Choi, Kiseon Kim, Sung Chan Jun
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) is a promising method for surveillance or monitoring underwater environments. This network may be most applicable as a disaster alarm system against tsunamis and red tides. Sensor measurement data and sensor location information from these networks are important elements for the UASN system. However, global positioning system (GPS) information is not yet available because the electromagnetic signal has high attenuation under the water. Thus, new methods for sensor localization are of great importance to UASN systems. In this paper, an event-driven localization scheme using the constant arrival time surface (ELSUCATS) is proposed to achieve …
Interpretation Of Sar Image Modulation By The Interaction Of Current And Bottom Topography In Gyeonggi Bay With Microwave Scattering Models, Tae-Ho Kim, Chan-Su Yang, Kazuo Ouchi
Interpretation Of Sar Image Modulation By The Interaction Of Current And Bottom Topography In Gyeonggi Bay With Microwave Scattering Models, Tae-Ho Kim, Chan-Su Yang, Kazuo Ouchi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The effect of the interaction between surface currents and bottom topography to the radar cross section (RCS) is investigated using theoretical and numerical scattering models and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. First, the ocean waveheight spectrum perturbed by a varying surface current is computed under the wind condition at the time of SAR data acquisition. The surface current data are extracted from the tidal current models. The RCS modulations are then computed using the small perturbation method (SPM) and the numerical scattering model based on the method of moments (MoM) with undulated surface height profiles simulated from the perturbed wave …

Reconstruction And Analysis Of Surface Velocity From Drifters In The Kuroshio Region East Of Taiwan, Kai-Ho Cheng, Chen-Chih Lin, Po-Chun Hsu, Shih-Jen Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this study, sea surface velocities derived from drifters were gridded to 0.25 latitude by 0.25 longitude for analysis of the Kuroshio region east of Taiwan. The data for each grid that were originally missing were obtained using the Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions (DINEOF) method, which can precisely reconstruct missing data. Compared with the original data, the error of the reconstructed Kuroshio velocity is 0.18 0.03 m/s. By analyzing the reconstructed data, we defined the Kuroshio axis at its maximum surface velocity in the zonal direction of 0.25 latitude along the east coast of Taiwan. The results indicate …

Breaking Barriers: Saudi Women In Non Traditional Careers, Suad Dukhaykh
Student Scholarship
Women occupy only 15.8 percent of the private and public positions occupied by Saudi nationals, according to statistics from the Central Department of Statistics and Information 2015. The Saudi government has highlighted the need to support women's higher education and combat sociopolitical barriers to their employment. Despite facing substantial challenges to entering the labor market, females have made gains in Saudi society; these include higher literacy rates, greater employment, and moderate rates of entry into both positions of leadership and nontraditional careers. Qualitative research was based on semi-structured interviews with 30 women, 18 of whom had nontraditional careers and 12 …

Prepared Practitioners: An Evaluation Of The Professional Development Experiences Of Sport-Based Youth Development Practitioners, Danielle A. Derosa
Master's Theses
Professional development for Out-of-School time (OST) staff is a comprehensive term that can refer to a variety of education, training, and development opportunities (Bouffard & Little, 2004). As a way to develop staff, organizations spend time and resources to provide opportunities that encourage the acquisition of knowledge and growth. One theory that has been looked at for its impact on professional development is the Community of Practice (CoP) is a framework (Wenger, 1998). With its focus on learning as social participation, CoP framework defines itself along three dimensions; joint enterprise, mutual engagement and shared repertoire (Cheng & Lee, 2013; Akerson, …

An Assessment Of Data Related To Inspections Of Risk Factors For Public Swimming Pools, Shanita Shack, Maurice Redmond, R. Christopher Rustin
Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is mandated to ensure that public swimming pools are safe for those who use them. This mandate is carried out by the DPH and local environmental health professionals through regulations and inspections. In 2015, legislation was introduced proposing to reduce the authority of the DPH to inspect certain pool types (apartments, subdivision, condominiums) and thus reduce regulatory protections in place for swimmers. To ensure that the DPH had current information on the risks associated with pools, the EH team, with assistance from a graduate student, analyzed inspection data to evaluate risk factors …

The Beast Inside, Steve Cave
Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones
This thesis contains the first seven chapters of the novel Ravenous, the short story “Faithfall,” and the academic paper “From Hellhound to Hero: Tracking the Shifting Shape of the 21st Century Werewolf.” Both of the stories deal with werewolves as a common element, but use very different types of werewolves in each. The werewolves of Ravenous transform through losing control or giving in to their passions, while the werewolves in “Faithfall” change only with the full moon, and retain no control once transformed. Both stories have a gay male protagonist, though also in very different ways. Ravenous follows the story …

Plate Waste Trends Of 5Th-8Th Grade Students At A Residential Environmental Learning Center, Colleen K. Foehrenbacher
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This descriptive research determined, using aggregated nonselective plate waste measurements, the characteristics of plate waste generated by 5th-8th grade students visiting Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Lanesboro, Minnesota over the course of 5 years. The results indicated a positive relationship between plate waste and group size; that groups from rural schools wasted less plate waste than schools from urban or suburban locations; and that groups from private schools wasted less than groups from public school groups. Completely eliminating plate waste is unrealistic, but reducing plate waste lowers user costs, makes program operations more efficient, and enhances a program’s success …

Outlining A Sustainable Campus Garden: A Proposal To Revive The Bates Garden, Allison Berman, Zsofia Duarte, Emma Marchetti
Community Engaged Research Reports
Reviving the Bates Garden on the corner of College and Vale Streets is in the institution's best interest, for a campus garden would synthesize Bates College’s ideals of academic rigor, intellectual curiosity, and freedom. Through extensive 1 research, we - students in ENVR 417: Community-Engaged Research - have pinpointed why past attempts at the Garden have failed, and how a revival would succeed. Past engagement with the Garden failed to engage it as a functioning system and put all leadership responsibilities on an existing, full-time staff member, Bill Bergevin the College’s Landscape Architect, which lead to the Garden’s demise. Accordingly, …
Proposal For Strategic Planning For Solid Waste Management In Lewiston, Me, Jonathan Anderson, Brent Feldman, William Sadlo
Proposal For Strategic Planning For Solid Waste Management In Lewiston, Me, Jonathan Anderson, Brent Feldman, William Sadlo
Community Engaged Research Reports
The city of Lewiston currently has excellent provisions for the disposal of solid waste, making waste disposal for citizens a relatively cheap and efficient process. Solid waste is picked up from residences and then sent to Mid Maine Waste Action Corporation (MMWAC). From there, it is turned into ash and then dumped into the Lewiston landfill. Now over 25 years old, municipal officials are concerned about the long term viability of these current arrangements. After being introduced to the current situation by municipal officials and local politicians, the goals of our project were three-fold: 1. Understand the history of waste …

Impact Of Climate Change On Shihmen Reservoir Water Supply, Tai-Yi Chu, Jyun-Long Lee, Wen-Cheng Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the water supply of the Shihmen reservoir in northern Taiwan. Five downscaled general circulation models that represent the daily meteorological data of 2046-2065 were adopted. The future inflow of the Shihmen reservoir was estimated using the tank model. Subsequently, the water supply risk under the given demand and operating conditions was simulated and assessed. Compared with 2004-2011, the average annual precipitation of the Shihmen watershed in 2046-2065 is lower, particularly during the wet season (May-October). Therefore, the risk to the water supply will increase in the first cropping season (from March …
