Diasporic Female Identities In Bharati Mukherjee's Desirable Daughters And Idris Ali's Dongola., Rola Alaa Koraa

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to explore the development of female identities in two contemporary diasporic novels Bharati Mukherjee’s Desirable Daughters (2002) and Idris Ali’s Dongola (1993) that tackle the notion of diaspora differently. Desirable Daughters portrays the modern type of diaspora, that of immigration, while Dongola portrays the Nubian diaspora as a typical classical diaspora. The main goal of the thesis is to examine the different implications of diaspora on the protagonists’ identity formation as females in order to know where they fit in the diasporic spectrum. Tara and Halima share some major factors such as being members of ethnic minorities, …

Strengthening Higher Education Space In Africa Through North-South Partnerships And Links: Myths And Realities From Tanzania Public Universities, Johnson Ishengoma

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Governments' cuts in research and development funding for public universities in Tanzania has compelled these institutions to establish and develop extensive partnerships and links with universities, and research centers in the North. The establishment of the North-South partnerships has also coincided with the dominance of external and heavy dependence on external donors for funding of research and development activities in the majority of Tanzania public universities. This article, using the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), public university, seeks to shed light on whether or not partnerships make any significant contribution to the institution’s capacity building. The thesis of this …

Information Literacy Skills And Awareness Of Electronic Information Resources As Influencing Factors Of Their Use By Postgraduate Students In Two Universities In South-West Nigeria, Chukwuemeka O. Azubuike Mr, Chukwuemeka O. Azubuike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This work focused on Information literacy skills and awareness of electronic information resources as influencing factors of their use by postgraduate students in two Universities in South-West Nigeria.

The need for this study was prompted after observing that most postgraduate students in Nigerian Universities have poor information literacy skills and awareness of electronic information resources which could be due to inadequate end user training, poor search skills, mass irrelevant information, slow internet connectivity, the need to filter the results from the search of information, failure to find information, inaccessibility of some information sources etc. This therefore raises a question of …

Beyond Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learned Information In Forodhani Park, Jaimie Lynn Mulligan May 2016

Beyond Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learned Information In Forodhani Park, Jaimie Lynn Mulligan

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This ethnographic study examines Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Mji Mkongwe (Stone Town), Zanzibar, and how ecological knowledge shared by locals on the island is formed and is shared among locals in a park setting. Using a framework of political ecology, this study specifically highlights ecological pressures of local population growth, global climate change on a local scale, and local economic changes as the key drivers for the creation and cultural importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge. To discover both the ecological pressures and the examples of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, I conducted semi-structured, open-ended interviews in Forodhani Park, a public park on …

Global Gains, Local Costs? Evaluating The Nexus Of Industrial Agriculture, Conservation Science, And Rural Livelihoods In The African Tropics, Rachel E. Palkovitz

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Industrial agriculture and protected areas for biodiversity conservation are two major drivers of land use policy in the African tropics, with consequences for both biodiversity and rural human populations. In Tanzania, conservation and development have led to the marginalization of pastoralists, including and especially rural Maasai. I examine how local perceptions of land use and livelihoods are influenced by recent and historical expansion of protected areas and large-scale industrial crop plantations in Longido, northern Tanzania. Using the framework of political ecology, I situate the emergence of industrial agriculture, especially that of palm oil, and protected areas in the African tropics …

Assessing Blackmouth Shiner (Notropis Melanostomus) Habitat In The Pascagoula River Using A Habitat Inundation Index Based On Time Series Landsat Data, Ben Beasley

Senior Honors Theses

The Blackmouth Shiner (Notropis melanostomus) is a small North American cyprinid that is listed as a Species of Concern due its relatively small range, occurring at only a few sites in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Due to limited data and the small number of actual samples of N. melanostomus, the true characteristics of viable habitat and distribution remain unknown.

The objective of my research was to utilize remote sensing data to gain a better understanding of the habitat characteristics where the N. melanostomus has been collected and use this information to identify other areas were populations are …

High-Elevation Equatorial Catapult-Launched Rbcc Ssto Spaceplane For Economic Manned Access To Leo, Nihad E. Daidzic

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

A conceptual and feasibility study of an RBCC SSTO catapult-launched reusable strap-on parallel-boosted gliding-reentry lifting-body spaceplane for economic manned short-duration 300-kg payload LEO access is presented and discussed. One or more high-elevation equatorial spaceports are proposed each having magnetic-levitation catapult-launch mechanisms for subsonic to supersonic launches, adjacent paved runways, and on site facilitates to produce cryogenic propellants. High-elevation equatorial launch sites provide less dense atmosphere, less distance to LEO, and the possibility to launch into any orbital plane. The launch window for zero-inclination direct equatorial orbits requiring minimum specific energy and providing maximum specific payload capability of any existing launch …

A Novel Xenomonitoring Technique Using Mosquito Excreta/Feces For The Detection Of Filarial Parasites And Malaria, Nils Pilotte, Weam I. Zaky, Brian P. Abrams, Dave D. Chadee, Steven A. Williams Apr 2016

A Novel Xenomonitoring Technique Using Mosquito Excreta/Feces For The Detection Of Filarial Parasites And Malaria, Nils Pilotte, Weam I. Zaky, Brian P. Abrams, Dave D. Chadee, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Given the continued successes of the world’s lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination programs and the growing successes of many malaria elimination efforts, the necessity of low cost tools and methodologies applicable to long-term disease surveillance is greater than ever before. As many countries reach the end of their LF mass drug administration programs and a growing number of countries realize unprecedented successes in their malaria interven- tion efforts, the need for practical molecular xenomonitoring (MX), capable of providing surveillance for disease recrudescence in settings of decreased parasite prevalence is increasingly clear. Current protocols, however, require testing of mosquitoes in pools of …

An Assessment Of Soil Erosion On Pemba Island Using The Universal Soil Loss Equation, Emily Gillispie Apr 2016

An Assessment Of Soil Erosion On Pemba Island Using The Universal Soil Loss Equation, Emily Gillispie

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Healthy soil is necessary for maintaining agricultural productivity, which is the basis of the economy on Pemba Island, Tanzania. Soil erosion is a notable concern for subsidence-farming villages, as it reduces the agricultural potential of farmland through the loss of nutrients, organic matter, and depth of quality growing soil (Georhing, 2009). The island of Pemba is the perfect case study for soil erosion, as their economy is largely based in agriculture, and the combined hilly topography and monsoonal climate make it highly susceptible to soil erosion. Yet, Pemba’s main cash crops are clove and fruit trees, which have potential to …

What Is The Effect On Knowledge, Staff Satisfaction And Competency Of Care After Educating Providers On Emergency Department Triage In An Urban Academic Medical Center?, Shari Torres

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Saturday, July 25, 2015:

Background. Hospitals in recent years have shown an increase in overcrowding in their emergency departments due to hospital closures, lack of primary care and an aging population. Many patients are not receiving appropriate timely care, which may result in delays in treatment, adverse events, and even death. Triage is defined as the process of sorting and prioritizing patients for care (Moller et al., 2010, p.746) Critical thinking is necessary for the triage or 'sorting' and the identification of the ill patient is an important process to avoid adverse events.

Purpose. The purpose of …
