Culture, Health, And Science: A Multidisciplinary Liberal Arts Alternative To The Public Health Major, Morgan M. Morgan, Sabina Knight, Aline C. Gubrium

World Literature: Faculty Publications

Since the 2003 call by the Institute of Medicine to educate undergraduates in public health, various models have emerged for incorporating public health into the liberal arts and sciences. One model is a professionalized public health major that uses core public health competencies to prepare a workforce of health professionals. A second model offers a broad-based public health major rooted in liberal arts principles, resisting the utilitarian trend toward human capital formation. A third model resists even the label of “public health,” preferring instead to introduce undergraduates to many ways of analyzing human health and healing. The multidisciplinary Culture, Health, …

The Rise Of Corporate Religious Liberty: Introduction, Micah Schwartzman, Chad Flanders, Zoe Robinson Feb 2016

The Rise Of Corporate Religious Liberty: Introduction, Micah Schwartzman, Chad Flanders, Zoe Robinson

All Faculty Scholarship

This Introduction to our edited book, The Rise of Corporate Religious Liberty (Oxford University Press, 2016), offers an account of the “corporate turn” in law and religion. Here the term “corporate” refers to any organized body of people - groups, associations, organizations, and institutions - and, more specifically, to for-profit corporations. Our contention is that the relationship between law and religion has shifted dramatically in the last decade, moving from a conception of religious freedom focused mainly on individual liberty toward one that privileges the rights of religious organizations. We trace this development in two stages, describing the initial movement …

The application of genomics technologies to medicine and biomedical research is increasing in popularity, made possible by new high-throughput genotyping and sequencing technologies and improved data analysis capabilities. Some of the greatest genetic diversity among humans, animals, plants, and microbiota occurs in Africa, yet genomic research outputs from the continent are limited. The Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiative was established to drive the development of genomic research for human health in Africa, and through recognition of the critical role of bioinformatics in this process, spurred the establishment of H3ABioNet, a pan-African bioinformatics network for H3Africa. The limitations …

Legitimising The Illegitimate : Extending Interpretation Beyond Reality. The Shrimp Fairytale And Its Implications, Mervyn Martin

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The challenges of liberalization of international trade; Firstly was the realization that in the past there was a tendency to be satisfied with sweeping, unspecific statements on best principles, which always led to often a meaningless outcome without hard and fast commitments. The second was their episodic character. The notion of dispute settlement involves conflicting assertions as to the rights and obligations of the parties involved. Disputes arise from freely entered relationships between parties that create expectations as to their future conduct. there existed a three-pronged objective of the negotiating plan indicated from the Negotiating Group on Dispute Settlement for …

Grassroots Women And Peer Learning: Home-Based Caregiver Networks And Health Mutual Funds, Pamela Ransom Jan 2016

Grassroots Women And Peer Learning: Home-Based Caregiver Networks And Health Mutual Funds, Pamela Ransom

Journal of International Women's Studies

Universal access and financial risk protection are identified as health targets in global negotiations for post 2015 development goals although these represent difficult challenges for countries burdened by overstretched budgets and growing populations with increasingly complex health care needs. In many parts of Africa health financing is characterized by weak, under-resourced systems, high out of pocket contributions and lack of donor will. The paper gains insight from small scale, creative financing strategies for health emerging among the very poor through innovations of grassroots women’s networks. We explore the influence of peer learning and information exchange in women’s home-based caregiver networks …

Qualitative Research For Social Marketing: One Organization’S Journey To Improved Consumer Insight, Kim Longfield, Reid Moorsmith, Katia Peterson, Isolda Fortin, James Ayers, Oana Lupu

The Qualitative Report

Population Services International (PSI) is an international NGO working to improve outcomes in developing countries through behavior change communications and the social marketing of health products and services. Consumer insight is central to PSI's social marketing strategy because it informs which messages to promote and which products and services to offer to make the concept of healthy behavior change attractive to consumers. Qualitative research provides rich insight by exploring consumers' values, feelings, thoughts, intentions, barriers, motivators, culture, and social norms that affect their behaviors and use of products and services. In this paper, we describe how PSI's qualitative research program …

From City Of The Oppressed To City Of The Free: Tracing The Progress Of Decolonization In African Cities, Oluwapelumi Botti

Honors Thesis Collection

Several African historians have famously recognized the challenges created by colonialism in colonial cities. Colonial rule has been argued to have brought modernization and urbanization to Africans. On the other hand, African colonial cities were often sites of terror, inequality and racial segregation where those colonized were made disenfranchised. Thus, what became of these former colonial African cities that were designed to promote European superiority? How did African leaders and urban planners overcome the challenges inherited from colonialism? Finally, how did the ideologies of African postcolonial leaders influence urban plans? Through the case studies of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, Tanzania’s capital …

A Method To Estimate Climate-Critical Construction Materials Applied To Seaport Protection, Austin Becker, Nathan Chase, Martin Fischer, Ben Schwegler, Keith Mosher Jan 2016

A Method To Estimate Climate-Critical Construction Materials Applied To Seaport Protection, Austin Becker, Nathan Chase, Martin Fischer, Ben Schwegler, Keith Mosher

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

Climate adaptation for coastal infrastructure projects raises unique challenges because global-scale environmental changes may require similar projects to be completed in many locations over the same time frame. Existing methods to forecast resource demand and capacity do not consider this phenomenon of a global change affecting many localities and the resulting increased demand for resources. Current methods do not relate to the most up-to-date climate science information, and they are too costly or too imprecise to generate global, regional, and local forecasts of “climate-critical resources” that will be required for infrastructure protection. They either require too much effort to create …

Dwelling In American: Dissent, Empire, And Globalization, John Muthyala Jan 2016

Dwelling In American: Dissent, Empire, And Globalization, John Muthyala

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

Globalization is not the Americanization of the world, argues John Muthyala. Rather, it is an uneven social, cultural, economic, and political process in which the policies and aspirations of powerful nation-states are entangled with the interests of other empires, nation-states, and communities. Dwelling in American: Dissent, Empire, and Globalization takes up a bold challenge, critiquing scholarship on American empire that views the United States as either an exceptional threat to the world or the only hope for the future. It does so in order to provincialize America, to understand it from outside the borders of nation and …

A Good Measure Of Sacrifice: Aspects Of Zambia’S Contribution To The Liberation Wars In Southern Africa, 1964-1975, Clarence Chongo Jan 2016

A Good Measure Of Sacrifice: Aspects Of Zambia’S Contribution To The Liberation Wars In Southern Africa, 1964-1975, Clarence Chongo

Zambia Social Science Journal

From the early 1960s, and throughout the 1970s, southern African liberation movements successfully waged wars of national liberation, forcing white minority regimes to negotiate independence under black majority rule. This success partly stemmed from extensive diplomatic, military, and material support extended to various liberation movements by regional alliances such as the frontline states and transnational state actors and solidarity movements. This article examines salient aspects of Zambia’s contribution as a prominent regional actor to the liberation wars in southern Africa. In doing so, it underlines the nature and significance of Zambia’s support for the liberation movements. I argue that Zambia’s …

Management of riverine and coastal ecosystems warrants enhanced understanding of how different stakeholders perceive and depend upon different kinds of ecosystem services. Employing a mixed methods approach, this study compares and contrasts the use and perceptions of upstream residents, downstream residents, tourism officials, and conservation organizations regarding the value of 30 ecosystem services provided by the Wami River and its estuary in Tanzania, and investigates their perceptions of the main threats to this system. Our findings reveal that all of the stakeholder groups place a high value on the provision of domestic water, habitat for wild plants and animals, tourism, …

Kanga Textile Design, Education, And Production In Contemporary Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Mackenzie Moon Ryan Phd. Jan 2016

Kanga Textile Design, Education, And Production In Contemporary Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Mackenzie Moon Ryan Phd.

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

While today kanga textiles are commonly thought of as bearers of east African or Swahili culture, this industrially produced textile emerged from a complex history of global trade networks serving local consumer demands. Worn widely throughout the east African region, this textile emerged as a fashionable garment preferred by women along the Swahili Coast of east Africa in the late nineteenth century. Shortly after its introduction in 1886, these inexpensive printed textiles became favored consumer goods throughout the wider region, stretching from present-day southern Somalia, throughout Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, and into eastern DRC and northern Mozambique. (Closely …

Burden Of Diarrhea In The Eastern Mediterranean Region, 1990–2013: Findings From The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2013, Ibrahim Khalil, Ali Shafqat Akanda, Et Al

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Diarrheal diseases (DD) are leading causes of disease burden, death, and disability, especially in children in low-income settings. DD can also impact a child’s potential livelihood through stunted physical growth, cognitive impairment, and other sequelae. As part of the Global Burden of Disease Study, we estimated DD burden, and the burden attributable to specific risk factors and particular etiologies, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) between 1990 and 2013. For both sexes and all ages, we calculated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), which are the sum of years of life lost and years lived with disability. We estimate that over 125,000 …

Exploration Of The Practice Of Teacher Portfolio In Enhancing Teacher Effectiveness Of Primary School Teachers: A Case Study Of One Government Primary School In Newala District, Mtwara, Beno Milinga

Master of Education

Many primary school teachers have academic and professional weaknesses to effectively influence the quality of education in primary schools. However, depending on long-term professional developments to change these technical weaknesses is difficult. The efficient platform is, to update their daily practices with constant follow up from peers and mentors through TP. This study therefore, explored the practice of TP in enhancing TE to primary school teachers. The study employed a qualitative study approach particularly a single case study design. The sample for the study was 11 respondents including eight primary teachers, one Ward Education Officer (WEO), 1 Head Teacher (HT) …

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this chapter, discussion of key socio-cultural aspects that affect learning will be considered from two complementary perspectives:

• Aspects that may help learning, especially if adequately exploited by the teacher. • Aspects that may hinder learning, especially if not adequately contrasted by the teacher.

Thirteen papers written by authors from ten countries were accepted for Theme 3. For presentation and discussion, the papers accepted for Theme 3 were divided into subgroups according to their main focus. We are aware that it is not possible to make distinct groups of papers as there are several overlaps in the classification, but …

Reproductive Health

Although the value of population, health, environment (PHE) programs is appreciated by the development community and the conceptual linkages they incorporate are sound, little evidence exists to demonstrate their short- and long-term impacts—particularly the role that the family planning (FP) component of PHE projects plays in building resilience, improving livelihoods, and helping people adapt to climate change. To contribute to filling this gap, the Evidence Project collaborated with Tuungane, a PHE project jointly implemented by The Nature Conservancy and Pathfinder International, to conduct further analysis of their existing data and examine the evidence base around integrated PHE programming, FP, climate …

Articles

The pastoralists and hunter-gatherer indigenous peoples in Tanzania continue lobbying their recognition as such and protection of their land rights. This article discusses the extent to which the indigenous peoples are legally recognized and the state of their security of land tenure. With the hindsight of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 2007 and the 2003 Report of the African Commission Working Group of Experts on Indigenous Population, this article probes the emerging indigenous land rights within the broader understating of the minority rights in the Draft Constitution of Tanzania 2014 as well as the Draft Policy …

A Critical Analysis Of African-Centered Psychology: From Ism To Praxis, A. Ebede-Ndi Jan 2016

A Critical Analysis Of African-Centered Psychology: From Ism To Praxis, A. Ebede-Ndi

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The purpose of this article is to critically evaluate what is perceived as shortcomings in the scholarly field of African-centered psychology and mode of transcendence, specifically in terms of the existence of an African identity. A great number of scholars advocate a total embrace of a universal African identity that unites Africans in the diaspora and those on the continent and that can be used as a remedy to a Eurocentric domination of psychology at the detriment of Black communities’ specific needs. Another group of scholars argue for a relative African identity, emphasizing diversity and differences among African people both …
