Ex-Post Livestock Diseases, And Pastoralists' Averting Decisions In Tanzania, Mazbahul Ahamad
Ex-Post Livestock Diseases, And Pastoralists' Averting Decisions In Tanzania, Mazbahul Ahamad
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Little is known about the factors affecting pastoralists’ livestock vaccination decisions. In this thesis, we use a novel survey-based dataset on pastoralists living in the Ruaha landscape in Tanzania, and employ several econometric approaches to identify the factors affecting pastoralists’ decision-making process about livestock vaccination when disease occurrence and severity, vaccination and healthcare access costs and other related variables are known. Results from binary choice models that account for excess zeros indicate that socially and economically active households are more likely to vaccinate their livestock. The results also identify positive marginal effects of illness incidence and having wage earners and …
Gene Expression Differences In Hybrids At Beginning Of Speciation Continuum, Long A. Nicholas
Gene Expression Differences In Hybrids At Beginning Of Speciation Continuum, Long A. Nicholas
Biology Theses - Archive
The formation of new species results from reproductive isolation, or the barrier to successful mating between organisms of divergent populations. The degree of reproductive isolation can be measured by the reduction in fitness of hybrid offspring that can result from incompatibilities between the genotypes of each parent. In this study, genetic incompatibilities arising at the earliest stage of speciation are examined between intraspecific hybrids in which an effectively sterile hybrid phenotype termed “still†is observed at ~50% frequency in crosses between divergent populations of Tribolium castaneum. Timing and magnitude of gene expression regulation is examined at four stages of development, …

Naturally Occurring Mellein-Type 3,4-Dihydroisocoumarins And Related Lactones: Synthetic Approaches - A Review, Stephen Jm Mdachi
Tanzania Journal of Science
Mellein and its derivatives are the most common 3,4-dihydroisocoumarins and are known to exhibit an array of biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antiallergic, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, pheromonal, plant growth-promoting and antileukemic activities. Other mellein derivatives are recognized phytotoxins, neurotoxins, hepatotoxins, nephrotoxins and teratogens. Consequently, considerable efforts have been directed at studying these natural products. While most of the reported studies have focused on the isolation, characterization and bioassay studies of melleins, a number of synthetic studies have also been reported. This paper focuses on synthetic approaches towards these biologically active and, thus, potentially useful natural products. The aim …

Petrographic And Geochemical Characteristics Of The Kiejo, Rungwe And Ngozi Volcanic Rocks, Southern Tanzania: Implication For Tectonic Activities And Magmatic Differentiation, Athanas S. Macheyeki
Tanzania Journal of Science
Rock samples were collected from the Kiejo, Rungwe and Ngozi volcanoes, southern Tanzania. Results show that, in the Ngozi and Rungwe volcanoes, magma cooled relatively fast. After large part of the magma had crystallized, nucleation of crystals at a relatively slow rate crystallized from interstitial fluids of the primary magma that had already crystallized fine grained minerals resulting into large grains of minerals. In the Kiejo volcano, both zoned and unzonned olivine crystals exist; unzoned crystals being primary and the zoned ones are secondary. Such observations also indicate that the magma responsible for these rocks had interstitial fluids that crystallized …

Africa And The Rule Of Law, Makau Wa Mutua
Africa And The Rule Of Law, Makau Wa Mutua
Journal Articles
The rule of law is often seen as a panacea for ensuring a successful, fair and modern democracy which enables sustainable development. However, as Makau Mutua highlights, this is not the case. Using the example of African states, he describes how no African country has truly thrown off the shackles of colonial rule and emerged as a truly just nation state – even though many have the rule of law at the heart of their constitutions. This, he argues, is because the Western concept of the rule of law cannot be simply transplanted to Africa. The concept must be adapted …

In this paper, it is shown that the verb ‘kata’ is extremely productive and allows as many meanings as possible when it co-occurs with different nouns. The findings show that the semantic features of the verb kata change depending on the features of the objects, and whether they are in metaphorical or concrete contexts. It is found that the …
The Nature Of Conditional Sentences In Nyakyusa, Amani Lusekelo
The Nature Of Conditional Sentences In Nyakyusa, Amani Lusekelo
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The mechanisms utilized to introduce conditional construction in Nyakyusa are partly similar to the patterns available in some Bantu languages because its protasis is introduced by the word lıınga. The counterfactual marker angali introduces the apodosis of the counterfactual sentences, similar to Zulu and Swahili. The main difference is that Nyakyusa differentiates reality and unreality situations primarily through TAM formatives. For instance, realistic situations manifest in future and present tenses while unrealistic events are primarily indicated by remoteness in past tense.

Towards An Anglophone African Literature Praxis: A Case Of A Literary Linguistic Conundrum And The Teaching Of African Letters, Michael Andindilile
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This article attempts to bring together various strands vital in the study and teaching of Anglophone African literature in an increasingly globalised world, which no longer has the luxury of ignoring the rich literatures from this unique continent often given an unwarranted bad name. It looks beyond the literary-linguistic conundrum to examine how the most can come out of the interpretation and teaching of Anglophone African literatures, primarily drawing on examples from Chinua Achebe’s oeuvre. It primarily argues that the increasingly transnational world has heightened the need to study and teach literatures from traditionally non-English contexts in the language, English, …

A Comparative Study Of Headedness In Ruhaya Compounds, Emmanuel Ilonga Dr
A Comparative Study Of Headedness In Ruhaya Compounds, Emmanuel Ilonga Dr
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper presents endocentric and exocentric compounds in Ruhaya, with specific focus on their lexical properties, position of headwords, semantic relation between headwords and modifiers, and the semantic classification of noun-noun compounds. It offers a comparison between Ruhaya and other Bantu languages on these aspects, and extends the comparison to Indo-European languages (English, Dutch and French). It was found that Ruhaya has left-headed compounds, and words from the same and different lexical categories can combine to make up compound words. In the case of headed compounds, there is a kind of semantic relations through which modifiers slightly change the meaning …

Constituent Order And Focus In Naro Language, Rose Letsholo,, Budzani Gabanamotse-Mogara
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
In Naro, the base word order is SOV (Visser, 2010). However, this language displays interesting variations in word order due to the fact that different constituents can occur in non-canonical positions, particularly the sentence initial position. It is in lieu of this that this paper investigates the following questions: (1) In Naro, what constituents can be fronted and which cannot? (2) What is the significance of the PGN marker in the order of the constituents in Naro sentences? (3) What is special about the sentence initial position given that different lexical constituents can occupy this position? Regarding question (1), we …
Containing Opportunism In Buyer-Seller Relationships: A Case Of Tour Operators And Accommodation Establishments In The Tanzania's Tourism Industry, Benjamin Moses Sakita
Containing Opportunism In Buyer-Seller Relationships: A Case Of Tour Operators And Accommodation Establishments In The Tanzania's Tourism Industry, Benjamin Moses Sakita
Business Management Review
This study draws on the transaction cost theory (TCA), relational contracting theory (RCT) and resource dependence theory (RDT). The author investigates the impact of interpersonal and inter-firm trust, prior relationship duration, and asymmetric buyer dependence on supplier opportunism in the tour operator-accommodation establishment relationship. Data analysed is from a survey involving 81 tour operators in Tanzania ' s tourism industry. The data corroborates predictions of RCT, TCA and RDT. Specifically, trust dissipates supplier opportunism. Moreover, the effect of asymmetric buyer dependence on supplier opportunism moves in a non-monotonic fashion over the range of relationship duration. The non-monotonic movement indicates that, …
