Patient Agency, Terministic Screens, And The Role Of The Public In The Cases Of Karen Ann Quinlan And Terri Schiavo, Ashley Marie Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Humanity has always been fascinated with death, and in recent history, has attempted to delay or suspend death through life-preserving technologies. These advancements in artificial life support, such as ventilators and feeding tubes, have contributed to tenuous and controversial situations in which the dividing line between life and death is unclear. In this thesis, I interrogate two case studies in order to analyze how the various medical, legal, and public discourses have grappled with the ambiguous space between life and death regarding patients in persistent vegetative states. The case of Karen Ann Quinlan from 1975 and the case of Terri …

Frequency Of Colonoscopy Surveillance In Average-Risk Adults Relative To Guideline Recommendations, Meng-Han Tsai Jun 2016

Frequency Of Colonoscopy Surveillance In Average-Risk Adults Relative To Guideline Recommendations, Meng-Han Tsai

Theses and Dissertations

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cancer in the United States with an estimated 132,700 new cases and 49,700 deaths in 2015. Well-performed screening colonoscopies prevent cancer by allowing visualization of the entire colon and removal of precancerous polyps (adenomas). Persons with high-risk polyps at screening are therefore advised to undergo periodic surveillance colonoscopy. Screening and surveillance colonoscopy guidelines were updated by the U.S. Multi-society Task Force (USMSTF) in 2006, which emphasized risk stratification by polyp features at screening colonoscopy.

This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with screening colonoscopy at an endoscopy center in South Carolina between …

Unusual Extramedullary Presentation Of Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia – A Case Report, Hasmukh Jain, Manju Sengar, Hari Menon, Tanuja Shet, Raajit Chanana, Uma Dangi

Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences

Mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) is a rare subtype of acute leukemia. The clinical manifestations are both due to bone marrow failure and extramedullary sites of involvement which can lead to protean manifestations. Accurate and timely diagnosis needs clinical suspicion as well as collaboration with the hematopathologist. Extramedullary (EM) disease poses a unique therapeutic challenge. There is a need for more data to guide treatment decisions and justify the usefulness of radiation and allogeneic stem cell transplant. We present 3 cases of MPAL with unusual EM sites of involvement.

Exploring Undergraduate Students' Information Seeking Motivation: A Self-Determination Perspective, Ana Dubnjakovic

Theses and Dissertations

Human motivation is a widely debated construct in psychology and many disciplines in social science as well as education and health sciences have adopted various psychological theories in an effort to understand motivational forces behind many human activities from dieting (e.g., Schelling, Munsch and Margraf, 2011), psychotherapy (e.g., Martens, 2010) and academic achievement (e.g., Artino, Holmboe and Durning, 2012) to political participation (e.g., Hersh, 2012). Case (2012) devotes an entire chapter in his seminal text on information behavior to an overview of what he calls a “motivational puzzle” tying it to information need as the predominantly discussed dimension of motivation …

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) causes serious crop losses worldwide by transmitting viruses. We have previously shown that salicylic acid (SA)-related plant defenses directly affect whiteflies. In this study, we applied exogenous SA to tomato plants in order to investigate the interaction between SA-induced plant volatiles and nonviruliferous B. tabaci B and Q or B- and Q-carrying tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). The results showed that exogenous SA caused plants to repel nonviruliferous whiteflies, but the effect was reduced when the SA concentration was low and when the whiteflies were viruliferous. Exogenous SA increased the number and …

Sleep Disruption And Cancer Incidence In A Southeastern Veteran Population, Alexandria F. Delage Jun 2016

Sleep Disruption And Cancer Incidence In A Southeastern Veteran Population, Alexandria F. Delage

Theses and Dissertations

Sleep disruption influences biological processes that can facilitate carcinogenesis. However, studies examining the relationship between sleep disruption and cancer risk have been inconclusive. This retrospective cohort study used de-identified data from the Veterans Administration (VA) electronic medical record to test the hypothesis that sleep disorder diagnoses among Veterans seeking care in the Southeast United States Service Network are associated with increased risk for cancer of the prostate, breast, colorectum, or total cancer (1999-2010, N=663,869). Sleep disorders were defined as patients with an in- or out-patient diagnosis as specified by the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. Cancer cases were defined as …

Do Some Deep‐Sea, Sediment‐Dwelling Species Of Harpacticoid Copepods Have 1000‐Km‐Scale Range Sizes?, Erin E. Easton, David Thistle Jun 2016

Do Some Deep‐Sea, Sediment‐Dwelling Species Of Harpacticoid Copepods Have 1000‐Km‐Scale Range Sizes?, Erin E. Easton, David Thistle

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The range sizes of sediment‐dwelling deep‐sea species are largely unknown. Such knowledge is important because a deep sea composed in large part of species with 100‐km‐scale ranges would be very different from one composed predominantly of species with 1000‐km‐scale ranges. For example, the total species richness would be much greater in the first case than in the second. As a step towards the determination of the distribution of species’ range sizes in the deep sea, we asked whether harpacticoid copepods (Crustacea) on the continental rise in the northeastern Pacific had 1000‐km‐scale range sizes. We chose harpacticoids because they occur widely …

Enslaved Labor In The Gang And Task Systems: A Case Study In Comparative Bioarchaeology Of Commingled Remains, William D. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

This study designs and tests an approach intended to confront one of the major problems faced within biological anthropology, the commingling or mixing of human skeletal remains. The first goal of the study is to implement an approach to sorting mixed human remains in order that they can be made amenable to comparative study. Bioarchaeologists depend on an array of measures, preserved in the human skeleton, to assess the lifestyles and identity of past human groups. As many of these measures are preserved within the morphology of different bones, it is imperative that the association and context of remains are …

Iron Uptake And Accumulation Is A Target Of Nickel Toxicity During The Lag Phase In Escherichia Coli, Geoffrey Tuttle Ford Jun 2016

Iron Uptake And Accumulation Is A Target Of Nickel Toxicity During The Lag Phase In Escherichia Coli, Geoffrey Tuttle Ford

Theses and Dissertations

Various transition metals are essential to all forms of life, and are only required in trace amounts. But this dependence comes as a double-edged sword. All organisms must maintain a careful intracellular quota that does not traverse outside an acceptable range. One transition metal in particular is nickel. The importance of this transition metal has been debated widely and its function varies greatly between organisms, including bacteria. However, the adverse effects caused by over exposure to this metal have been the center of much experimentation in recent years. Still, the mechanisms of nickel toxicity and the subsequent effects on cellular …

Defensive Roles And Factors That Affect The Production Of Monoterpenes In Morella Cerifera, Florence C. Anoruo Jun 2016

Defensive Roles And Factors That Affect The Production Of Monoterpenes In Morella Cerifera, Florence C. Anoruo

Theses and Dissertations

Plants as sessile organisms encounter myriad biotic and abiotic challenges in their habitats. Pathogen and herbivore attack are among the prominent biotic challenges that plants face in their environment. Plants respond to these attacks by using chemical compounds including monoterpenes that are constitutively and inductively produced in some plants, and stored inside glands on their leaves. Among the abiotic factors that influence the production of defense compounds, especially monoterpenes are light intensity and nutrient availability.

The objectives of this dissertation are to 1) comprehend the defensive role of monoterpenes, specifically investigating the associational defense of a non-odorous species (Ilex vomitoria) …

Development Of A Brief Motivational Interview To Promote Help Seeking Among Individuals With Symptoms Of Blood, Injection, Injury Phobia, David J. Finitsis

Doctoral Dissertations

For those who experience symptoms of Blood, Injection, Injury (BII) phobia, situations involving blood and needles elicit clinical levels of anxiety and subsequent avoidance. This avoidance increases their risk for suboptimal health outcomes. Current interventions take the form of general information campaigns; a tailored, one-on-one approach targeting individuals in distress may demonstrate greater efficacy. Motivational Interviewing (MI) has demonstrated effectiveness across multiple behavior change domains. The current project first conducted formative elicitation research to help develop a single session, peer-delivered, motivational interview; we then used a randomized, controlled trial to test whether the newly developed intervention would evince changes in …

Happy And Healthy Aging. The Analysis Of The Relationship Between Age, Health, Education And Happiness On International Social Survey Programme Data, Józef Haczyński

European Management Studies

The goal of this paper was the analysis of a relationship between subjective health, aging, education level and happiness based on the data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP). Health gets worse with age, and the effect was strongest in postsocialist Europe; the effect of education was weaker than the effect of age – the weakest in postsocialist countries. The interaction between age and education was significant in 4 out of 5 regions (non-significant in wealthy ones outside Europe), indicating a moderating effect of education on the negative relationship between age and health. Declared levels of happiness in postsocialist …

The Role Of Dermoscopy In Non-Pigmented Skin Disorders, Hafiza Fathan, Wresti Indriatmi, Rahadi Rihatmadja, Inge Ade Krisanti

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

The use of dermoscopy in non-pigmented skin disorders includes dermoscopy as a diagnostic tool for non- pigmented skin tumors, inflammatory diseases (inflammoscopy) and/or infectious disease (entomodermoscopy), lesions on nail fold and as a tool to monitor skin reaction as a response to treatment and/or side effect. The diagnosis becomes easier, faster and less expensive with dermoscopy without the need for invasive procedures. Knowledge on vascular pattern and its architectural arrangement; which is coupled with additional dermoscopic features, can aid clinicians to the diagnosis. Dermatoscopy can also predict, monitor and evaluate therapeutical response and/or side effect of skin disorders. Nonetheless, dermoscopy …

Progranulin (GRN) loss-of-function mutations leading to progranulin protein (PGRN) haploinsufficiency are prevalent genetic causes of frontotemporal dementia. Reports also indicated PGRN-mediated neuroprotection in models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease; thus, increasing PGRN levels is a promising therapeutic for multiple disorders. To uncover novel PGRN regulators, we linked whole-genome sequence data from 920 individuals with plasma PGRN levels and identified the prosaposin (PSAP) locus as a new locus significantly associated with plasma PGRN levels. Here we show that both PSAP reduction and overexpression lead to significantly elevated extracellular PGRN levels. Intriguingly, PSAP knockdown increases PGRN monomers, whereas …

Ecohydrology And Groundwater Dynamics In A Salt Marsh Island, Andrea L. H. Hughes Jun 2016

Ecohydrology And Groundwater Dynamics In A Salt Marsh Island, Andrea L. H. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Tidal salt marshes are extraordinarily productive and valuable ecosystems that provide via groundwater a not insignificant portion of coastal solute and nutrient budgets. Among the many goods and services they provide are habitat for diverse wildlife, protection for coastal communities during storms, and protection for coastal surface waters by filtering anthropogenic pollutants. One threat to the health of tidal salt marshes along the East Coast have been episodes of Acute Marsh Dieback (AMD) from 1999 to 2001. Dieback was observed at North Inlet salt marsh from 2000 to 2001. Since salt marsh hydrology is dominated by the local tidal regime, …

Satellite-Assisted Assessment Of The Effects Of Human Development On Coral Reefs, Roatan Honduras, Clayton A. Helm Jun 2016

Satellite-Assisted Assessment Of The Effects Of Human Development On Coral Reefs, Roatan Honduras, Clayton A. Helm

Theses and Dissertations

Human intervention is degrading coastal marine environments on a global scale. Coral reefs are one of the most valuable ecosystems occupying coastal areas that provide a vast majority of consumable fish, recreational activities, and protection from extreme events, such as tropical cyclones. Unfortunately, as human development activities such as the construction of buildings, road infrastructure, and agriculture increase in coastal areas, so do the detrimental impacts on the health of coral reefs. Consequences of coastal development such as pollution, sedimentation, eutrophication, overfishing, and recreational activities have been linked to diminished coral health. A degraded coral ecosystem can often be identified …

The Cranial Morphology Of The Black-Footed Ferret: A Comparison Of Wild And Captive Specimens, Tyler Antonelli Jun 2016

The Cranial Morphology Of The Black-Footed Ferret: A Comparison Of Wild And Captive Specimens, Tyler Antonelli

Theses and Dissertations

The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), a North American mustelid species, was once found abundantly throughout the Midwest until extreme decline in prairie dogs, the black-footed ferrets primary food source, brought the species to near-extinction. This resulted in the development of the Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Program which included bringing the entire species into captivity with the intention of breeding the species back to sufficient numbers to allow for successful reintroduction. While in captivity, many components of the ferrets’ health were accounted for, but the current study aims to address the effects that captivity may have had on the cranial morphology of …

Cut Purses And Poisoned Paintings: Resisting Gender Objectification, Meredith N. Will Jun 2016

Cut Purses And Poisoned Paintings: Resisting Gender Objectification, Meredith N. Will

Theses and Dissertations

The early modern English stage often portrays gender as polarized, creating an unwelcoming atmosphere toward characters who act exhibit characteristics from both male and female genders. Moll Cutpurse from Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton’s The Roaring Girl and Alice of Arden of Faversham resist early modern gender boundaries, conflating masculine and feminine attributes as they use objects to navigate their respective social spaces. Critics often describe Moll as a transvestite due to her fashion choice to wear a codpiece, along with her exaggerated, boisterous masculine behavior; however, she consistently defends her biological sex, implicating herself within her arguments concerning female …
