Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Luminophores And Enhancement With Melatonin, Sarah Michelle Roughton
Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Luminophores And Enhancement With Melatonin, Sarah Michelle Roughton
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The photoluminescent (PL), electrochemical, and electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) properties of 1,5-I-Aedans (N-(iodoacetylaminotheyl)-1-naphthylamine-5-sulfonic acid) in aqueous buffered (KH2PO4) and 50:50 (v/v) acetonitrile:KH2PO4 solutions were obtained. Tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) was used as the oxidative-reductive coreactant. The PL efficiencies (em) were 1.83 in KH2PO4 and 4.81 in mixed solvent compared to Ru(bpy)32+ standard solutions (em = 1.0). 1,5-I-Aedans displayed quasi-reversible oxidative electrochemistry in aqueous solutions and irreversible to quasi-reversible oxidation in mixed solvent. ECL efficiencies (ecl) were obtained by comparison to a Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) standard (ecl = 1) and were higher in KH2PO4 (ecl = 6.8 x 10-4) than in the mixed …
Student Identification Of Problem Topics In General Chemistry, Michelle Denyse Hilda Herridge
Student Identification Of Problem Topics In General Chemistry, Michelle Denyse Hilda Herridge
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Eliciting students' beliefs regarding the difficulty of subject matter is important since self-efficacy often determines study habits. The goal of this research was to investigate students' perceptions about the relative difficulty of topics taught in tertiary-level introductory chemistry courses. As a proof of concept, I created a survey composed of topics adapted from the South Carolina high school chemistry standards. This survey was piloted at Clemson University, where general chemistry students at the end of their first-semester were asked to rank the topics by perceived level of difficulty. Based on the pilot data analysis the survey was revised, adapted and, …
Discover And Analysis Of Grapevine Vein-Clearing Virus In Ampelopsis Cordata, Sylvia Marie Petersen
Discover And Analysis Of Grapevine Vein-Clearing Virus In Ampelopsis Cordata, Sylvia Marie Petersen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
A recent threat to the sustainability of grape production is Grapevine vein-clearing virus (GVCV), the first DNA virus discovered in grapevines. Infection with GVCV leads to vine decline, lower quality berries, and eventual death of the grapevine. Since GVCV was discovered in cultivated grapevines, research has been dedicated to investigating its range and origin. The entire genome of the first GVCV isolate from a grape cultivar ‘Chardonel' has been deposited in GenBank and is used as a reference genome. More recently, two GVCV isolates were found in native Vitis rupestris in Missouri. In this thesis project, I applied polymerase chain …

The Associations Between Economic Hardship And Paternal Depressive Symptoms And Children’S Socio-Emotional Outcomes Via Paternal Parenting: A Bayesian Approach, Elif Dede Yildirim
Dissertations - ALL
This study examined the associations between economic hardship and paternal mental health and preschool-aged children’s behavioral difficulties, indirectly through paternal engagement across compliers, non-compliers and controls in the Building Strong Families Project. A confluence of propositions within paternal involvement frameworks, the bio-ecological systems model, the family stress model, and risk and resilience frameworks guided the framing of the questions and hypotheses. The sample consisted of 3,045 African American, European American and Hispanic American fathers and their young children. Families were randomly assigned to a treatment and a control group. Analyses employed Bayesian multi-group path analysis. Results indicate that economic hardship …

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Broward County, Florida is a popular tourism destination. Due to its popularity, much of the shoreline has been modified and natural habitats were replaced with infrastructure such as houses, condominiums, resorts, and restaurants. The same Broward County beaches utilized by tourists and residents are important for three species of nesting sea turtles, including the Leatherback, Dermochelys coriacea, Loggerhead, Caretta caretta, and Green, Chelonia mydas, Turtles. The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) collects yearly data in order to study these endangered reptiles. Increased anthropogenic effects including further coastal development (public & private), public beach events, public beach access, as …
The Misidentification Of Children With Disabilities: A Harm With No Foul, Claire Raj
The Misidentification Of Children With Disabilities: A Harm With No Foul, Claire Raj
Faculty Publications
Special education, despite being a uniform federal mandate, is often implemented drastically differently depending on the school system delivering services, the particular category of disability, and the race or ethnicity of students. Affluent white children who attend well-managed school districts tend to benefit from special education services. In the under-funded and over-tasked districts where most minorities attend school, the special education system does not always provide the same benefits. In these schools, special education, too often, operates as a dumping ground for those students the general education system cannot or refuses to serve. In these instances, the label of “special …

Steady State Configurations Of Cells Connected By Cadherin Sites, Jared Adam Mcbride
Steady State Configurations Of Cells Connected By Cadherin Sites, Jared Adam Mcbride
Theses and Dissertations
Many cells employ cadherin complexes (c-sites) on the cell membrane to attach to neighboring cells, as well as integrin complexes (i-sites) to attach to a substrate in order to accomplish cell migration. This paper analyzes a model for the motion of a group of cells connected by c-sites. We begin with two cells connected by a single c-site and analyze the resultant motion of the system. We find that the system is irrotational. We present a result for reducing the number of c-sites in a system with c-sites between pairs of cells. This greatly simplifies the general system, and provides …
The Effectiveness Of Low Level Laser Therapy And Acupuncture As Interventions For Temporomandibular Joint Disorders In Adults: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Abel Getachew
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) encompass a range of disorders of the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory muscles and other associated structures. The main symptom of TMD patients is pain within the orofacial region. The objective of this review is to compare the effectiveness of low level laser therapy (LLLT) and acupuncture as interventions for TMD. Randomized controlled trials comparing LLLT versus PLT and real acupuncture versus placebo acupuncture were included within the review. The primary outcome was subjective pain intensity expressed via a numerical visual analogue scale (VAS) upon palpation of the masseter muscles. Secondary outcomes include pain intensity via VAS …

The Derivation Of Sea Surface Velocities From Satellite Imagery Using Maximum Cross Correlation (Mcc), Philip Lawrence
The Plymouth Student Scientist
An investigation into the use of cross-correlation statistics to resolve surface velocities from satellite imagery was conducted for the region characterised by the Benguela current at approximately 24oS - 28oS and 9oE - 17oE for July 14th and 15th 2011. Colour images depicting concentrations for chlorophyll_a taken by the MODIS sensor and provided by NASA’s Ocean Color Browser, were used to conduct the statistical analysis using distinguishable surface colour features as tracers. Three runs using different parameter values for the cross correlation were carried out and the output vector fields examined. The first run produced 126 vectors with mean u …

Reduction Of Friction By Recombinant Human Proteoglycan 4 In Il-1Α Stimulated Bovine Cartilage Explants, Katherine M. Larson, Ling Zhang, Khaled A. Elsaid, Tannin A. Schmidt, Braden C. Fleming, Gary J. Badger, Gregory D. Jay
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
A boundary lubricant attaches and protects sliding bearing surfaces by preventing interlocking asperity-asperity contact. Proteoglycan-4 (PRG4) is a boundary lubricant found in the synovial fluid that provides chondroprotection to articular surfaces. Inflammation of the diarthrodial joint modulates local PRG4 concentration. Thus, we measured the effects of inflammation, with Interkeukin-1α (IL-1α) incubation, upon boundary lubrication and PRG4 expression in bovine cartilage explants. We further aimed to determine whether the addition of exogenous human recombinant PRG4 (rhPRG4) could mitigate the effects of inflammation on boundary lubrication and PRG4 expression in vitro.
Cartilage explants, following a 7-day incubation with IL-1α, were tested …
Occupational Risks And Hazards Associated With Firefighting, Laura Walker
Occupational Risks And Hazards Associated With Firefighting, Laura Walker
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Annually about 100 firefighters die in the line duty, in the United States. Firefighters know it is a hazardous occupation. Firefighters know the only way to reduce the number of deaths is to change the way the firefighter (FF) operates. Changing the way a firefighter operates starts by utilizing traditional industrial hygiene tactics, anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling the hazard. Basic information and history of the fire service is necessary to evaluate FF hazards. An electronic survey was distributed to FFs. The first question was, “What are the health and safety risks of a firefighter?” Hypothetically heart attacks and new …

Determining Groundwater Sources And Ages Via Isotope Geochemistry In Big Sky, Montana, Thomson Connie
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The Big Sky ski resort area in southwestern Montana is experiencing exponential growth in both development and population. Concerns have arisen over the quantity of good-quality groundwater in the region, and whether there is a large enough reserve to support the growing demand. In light of already-documented water-level decreases, and domestic wells needing to be deepened or replaced, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) enlisted the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology's Ground Water Investigation Program to perform an assessment of groundwater availability and quality in the region, and define groundwater supply sources.
The geology in the …

Synthetic Investigation On The Biomimetic Metal-Catalyzed Sulfoxidations And Photochemical Generation Of A Highly Reactive Ruthenium(V)-Oxo Porphyrin, Weilong Luo
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Catalytic oxidation plays a crucial role in current chemical and pharmaceutical industries which is also a leading technology for green chemical processes. In Nature, the ubiquitous cytochrome P450 enzymes can catalyze a wide variety of oxidation reactions with high efficiency and selectivity. Many transition metal catalysts are designed as the biomimetic model of cytochrome P450 enzymes. In this work, series of metalloporphyrins and metallocorroles have been successfully synthesized to investigate and develop catalytic selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides.
Manganese(III) porphyrin complexes (2) and manganese(III) corrole complexes (6) with iodobenzene diacetate [PhI(OAc)2] as a mild oxygen source exhibited remarkable catalytic …
Self-Regulation In Preschoolers: Validity Of Hot And Cool Tasks As Predictive Measures Of Academic And Socio-Emotional Aspects Of School Readiness, Berenice Anaya
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Extensive research on the development of self-regulation has demonstrated that better executive functioning and effortful control during the preschool years are associated with greater kindergarten and early school achievement. Recent findings suggest that self-regulation tasks differ in their assessment of “hot” and “cool” regulation, how these processes map onto effortful control and executive functioning, and may predict school readiness. However, only a few studies have examined the validity of hot and cool regulation tasks (Allan & Lonigan, 2014; Di Norcia, Pecora, Bombi, Baumgartner, & Laghi, 2015; Willoughby, Kupersmidt, Voegler-Lee, & Bryant, 2011), and how they predict socio-emotional competence (Di Norcia …

We have compiled and mapped available carbon isotope data from sedimentary organic material sampled from the Gulf of Mexico prior to 2010. These data provide a baseline to which any changes in the Gulf of Mexico after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill can be compared. The mean (±1σ) δ13C values, relative to PDB, are −21.4±1.9‰ (entire Gulf of Mexico), −21.7±1.2‰ (shelf sediments), −20.4±1.6‰ (deepwater sediments), and −25.2±4.1‰ (seep-affected sediments). We compare pre-spill mean δ13C values to carbon isotope measurements of sedimentary organic material from coretop samples collected after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil …

Following the blowout of the Macondo well, a pulse in sedimentation resulted in changes in sedimentary redox conditions. This is demonstrated by downcore and temporal changes in the concentration of redox sensitive metals: Mn, Re, and Cd. Sediment cores collected in the NE Gulf of Mexico (GoM) reveal increased sedimentation after the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout. The formation of mucous-rich marine snow in surface waters and subsequent rapid deposition to underlying sediments is the likely cause. Respiration of this material resulted in decreased pore-water oxygen concentration and a shoaled redoxcline, resulting in two distinct Mn peaks in sediments following …

For terrestrial and marine benthic ecologists, landscape ecology provides a framework to address issues of complexity, patchiness, and scale—providing theory and context for ecosystem based management in a changing climate. Marine pelagic ecosystems are likewise changing in response to warming, changing chemistry, and resource exploitation. However, unlike spatial landscapes that migrate slowly with time, pelagic seascapes are embedded in a turbulent, advective ocean. Adaptations from landscape ecology to marine pelagic ecosystem management must consider the nature and scale of biophysical interactions associated with organisms ranging from microbes to whales, a hierarchical organization shaped by physical processes, and our limited capacity …

Kenneth Nickerson Papers
Most animal–microbe symbiotic interactions must be advantageous to the host and provide nutritional benefits to the endosymbiont. When the host provides nutrients, it can gain the capacity to control the interaction, promote self-growth, and increase its fitness. Chlorella-like green algae engage in symbiotic relationships with certain protozoans, a partnership that significantly impacts the physiology of both organisms. Consequently, it is often challenging to grow axenic Chlorella cultures after isolation from the host because they are nutrient fastidious and often susceptible to virus infection. We hypothesize that the establishment of a symbiotic relationship resulted in natural selection for nutritional and metabolic …

Multitrophic Diversity Effects Of Network Degradation, Elizabeth Nichols, C. A. Peres, J. E. Hawes, S. Naeem
Multitrophic Diversity Effects Of Network Degradation, Elizabeth Nichols, C. A. Peres, J. E. Hawes, S. Naeem
Biology Faculty Works
Predicting the functional consequences of biodiversity loss in realistic, multitrophic communities remains a challenge. No existing biodiversity–ecosystem function study to date has simultaneously incorporated information on species traits, network topology, and extinction across multiple trophic levels, while all three factors are independently understood as critical drivers of post-extinction network structure and function. We fill this gap by comparing the functional consequences of simulated species loss both within (monotrophic) and across (bitrophic) trophic levels, in an ecological interaction network estimated from spatially explicit field data on tropical fecal detritus producer and consumers (mammals and dung beetles). We simulated trait-ordered beetle and …

Reflections On Reflectivity: Comments On Evan Thompson’S Waking, Dreaming, Being, Jay L. Garfield
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
EvanThompson has written a marvelous book. Waking, Dreaming, Being blends intellectual autobiography, phenomenology, cognitive science, studies in Buddhist and Vedānta philosophy, and creative metaphilosophy in an exploration of what it is to be a person, of the nature of consciousness, and of the relation of contemplative to scientific method in the understanding of human life. I have learned a great deal from it, and the community of philosophers and cognitive scientists will be reading and discussing it for some time. But I have come to criticize Thompson, not to praise him. Here I raise a few issues regarding Thompson’s treatment …
