Educators’ Perceptions Of Student Mobility During The Intermediate Elementary Grades In Two Rural Counties In Missouri, Landon S. Gray Jul 2016

Educators’ Perceptions Of Student Mobility During The Intermediate Elementary Grades In Two Rural Counties In Missouri, Landon S. Gray

Dissertations

Student mobility is “students moving from one school to another for reasons other than being promoted to the next school level” (Rumberger, 2002, p. 1). In this qualitative study, the researcher detailed how student mobility impacted four rural intermediate elementary schools in two select counties in southwest Missouri. Four principals, four counselors, and four classroom teachers were interviewed to learn how high student mobility impacted these participants, mobile and non-mobile students, and schools overall. There has been ample research on student mobility in the primary grades and in high school, but very little research exists dealing with intermediate elementary students. …

Three-Dimensional Printing And Nanotechnology For Enhanced Implantable Materials, Karthik Kumar Tappa Jul 2016

Three-Dimensional Printing And Nanotechnology For Enhanced Implantable Materials, Karthik Kumar Tappa

Doctoral Dissertations

Orthopedic and oro-maxillofacial implants have revolutionized treatment of bone diseases and fractures. Currently available metallic implants have been in clinical use for more than 40 years and have proved medically efficacious. However, several drawbacks remain, such as excessive stiffness, accumulation of metal ions in surrounding tissue, growth restriction, required removal/revision surgery, inability to carry drugs, and susceptibility to infection. The need for additional revision surgery increases financial costs and prolongs recovery time for patients. These metallic implants are bulk manufactured and often do not meet patient's requirements. A surgeon must machine (cut, weld, trim or drill holes) them in order …

Chronotype Preference, Partial Sleep Deprivation, And Executive Functions Performance Throughout The Wake-Cycle, Devin Layne Merritt Jul 2016

Chronotype Preference, Partial Sleep Deprivation, And Executive Functions Performance Throughout The Wake-Cycle, Devin Layne Merritt

Doctoral Dissertations

Sleep is vital to survival and well-being. Adequate sleep, which is conceptualized in terms of quantity and quality, is positively related to a number of cognitive functions. In terms of length, it has been recommended that individuals in late adolescence and adulthood should receive no less than eight hours of sleep. Negative effects on higher-order mental processes have been found in states of sleep deprivation. Individuals who experience total sleep deprivation show decrements in performance on tasks of executive function (i.e. sustained attention, planning, and decision making). However, the effects of partial sleep deprivation on executive functions has not been …

Long before the term “sustainable” became a household word, farmers were implementing sustainable practices in the form of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. IPM uses a combination of biological, cultural, physical, and chemical methods to reduce and/or manage pest populations. These strategies are used to minimize environmental risks, economic costs, and health hazards. Pests are managed (although rarely eliminated) to reduce their negative impact on the crop.

Scouting and monitoring diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic disorders in order to identify potential problems before they result in serious losses is essential to the IPM approach. The key to effective monitoring is …

Molecular Structure And Exciton Dynamics In Organic Conjugated Polymers, Alan K. Thomas Jul 2016

Molecular Structure And Exciton Dynamics In Organic Conjugated Polymers, Alan K. Thomas

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Intermolecular electronic interactions, dipole coupling and orbital overlap, caused by π-π stacking in organic conjugated polymers lead to unique structures and properties that can be harnessed for optoelectronic applications. These interactions define structure-function relationships in amorphous and aggregated forms of polymers in the solid state and determine their efficiencies and functionality in electronic devices, from transistors to solar cells. Organic polymer electronic device performance depends critically upon electronic coupling between monomer units --mediated by conformation and packing characteristics -- that dictates electronic properties like conductivity and capacitance as well as electronic processes, such as charge carrier generation and transport. This …

Infective Endocarditis Related To Iv Drug Abuse, Jasmine D. Branch Jul 2016

Infective Endocarditis Related To Iv Drug Abuse, Jasmine D. Branch

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Drug abuse in the United States continues to rise. In 2014, the U.S. had the highest rate of deaths due to drug overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). There are several health conditions that are associated with drug abuse. Intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) is a common route used, which often works fast and causes an “immediate high”. IVDA often involves the injection of illegal drugs into an individuals veins. The needles are often shared or re-used, exposing individuals to infectious diseases. One common complication of IVDA is infective endocarditis (IE). IE can occur when bacteria enters the bloodstream …

What Bats Have To Say About Speech And Language, Sonja C. Vernes Jul 2016

What Bats Have To Say About Speech And Language, Sonja C. Vernes

KIP Articles

Understanding the biological foundations of language is vital to gaining insight into how the capacity for language may have evolved in humans. Animal models can be exploited to learn about the biological underpinnings of shared human traits, and although no other animals display speech or language, a range of behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom are relevant to speech and spoken language. To date, such investigations have been dominated by studies of our closest primate relatives searching for shared traits, or more distantly related species that are sophisticated vocal communicators, like songbirds. Herein I make the case for turning our …

Background: Nox5 was the last member of the Nox enzyme family to be identified. Functionally distinct from the other Nox isoforms, our understanding of its physiological significance has been hampered by the absence of Nox5 in mouse and rat genomes. Nox5 is present in the genomes of other species such as the rabbit that have broad utility as models of cardiovascular disease. However, the mRNA sequence, characteristics, and functional analysis of rabbit Nox5 has not been fully defined and were the goals of the current study.

Methods: Rabbit Nox5 was amplified from rabbit tissue, cloned, and sequenced. COS-7 cells were …

Patterns In Richness And Community Structure: From Bacteria To Apex Predators, Ara S. Winter Jul 2016

Patterns In Richness And Community Structure: From Bacteria To Apex Predators, Ara S. Winter

Biology ETDs

Patterns of community structure and richness provide context for studies from microbial ecology, global macroecology, languages, to Bayesian statistics. Diversity patterns for animals on land and their predictor variables are well studied. However, diversity patterns for bacterial communities and marine macroorganisms are not well studied or understood. Here I examine diversity patterns in caves, on the external surface of Chiroptera (bats), and in marine ecosystems. At the local to regional scale we investigate factors that drive bacterial community patterns in richness and composition in lava cave microbial mats and microbes on bats. Lastly, out of the cave and into the …

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell Jul 2016

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell

Biology ETDs

Diversification of parasite species, in light of their host association, is an area ripe for testing hypotheses of evolution when one species requires another for survival. The 23 species of western North American chipmunks (genus Tamias) host two species of ectoparasitic sucking lice (Anoplura) and two species of endoparasitic pinworms (Nematoda). I used a phylogenetic approach to investigate the evolutionary histories of the parasites in light of the hosts and the landscape. In comparing the parasites, I found that the two pinworm species have similar diversification patterns, linked to hosts, but those processes occurred on different time scales. As another …

Energetics Across Ecological Scales, John M. Grady Jul 2016

Energetics Across Ecological Scales, John M. Grady

Biology ETDs

Energy is a common currency of ecological interactions. In this dissertation, I consider ecological energetics at different temporal, spatial and organizational scales. In my first chapter, I examine the energetics and thermoregulation of an enigmatic taxon: dinosaurs. From fossil evidence and assessment of living vertebrates I conclude that many non-avian dinosaurs were likely thermally intermediate, or 'mesothermic'. In my second chapter I detail the empirical evidence gathered to buttress my claim of dinosaur mesothermy. In my third chapter, I show how ecosystem rates of carbon flux, gross primary production and total biomass can be linked to individual body size. In …

Altitudinal Gradients Do Not Predict Plant-Symbiont Responses To Experimental Warming, Melanie R. Kazenel Jul 2016

Altitudinal Gradients Do Not Predict Plant-Symbiont Responses To Experimental Warming, Melanie R. Kazenel

Biology ETDs

Fungal symbionts, ubiquitous inhabitants of above- and belowground plant tissues, can play important roles in increasing plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stress. Disruption of plant-fungal interactions may therefore have important consequences for plant responses to climate change. Both altitudinal gradients and warming experiments can be useful tools for understanding responses of symbioses to climate shifts, but the degree to which altitudinal patterns will predict species responses to warming has received little attention for plant-symbiont interactions. This study combined surveys along replicated altitudinal gradients with a long-term warming experiment at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) in Colorado, USA to …

Phylogenetics And Diversification Of Whirligig Beetles (Coleoptera, Gyrinidae), Grey Thomas Gustafson Jul 2016

Phylogenetics And Diversification Of Whirligig Beetles (Coleoptera, Gyrinidae), Grey Thomas Gustafson

Biology ETDs

Whirligig beetles are a family of aquatic beetles with an estimated 1,000 species distributed globally. Phylogenetic analysis incorporating molecular data has only recently been conducted on the family and many genera have never received modern taxonomic revision. The first chapter of the dissertation provides a taxonomic revision of the Southeast Asian whirligig beetle genus Porrorhynchus, finding the genus to contain 5 species, and no support for the numerous proposed subspecies. For the second chapter a phylogenetic analysis utilizing the most novel phylogenetic reconstructions methods incorporating the new Fossilized Birth-Death macroevolutionary model implemented in the program MrBayes 3.2.6 was conducted on …

Experimental Drought And Soil Depth Interactively Influence Fungal Community Composition In Piñon-Juniper Woodland, Eric Olivas Jul 2016

Experimental Drought And Soil Depth Interactively Influence Fungal Community Composition In Piñon-Juniper Woodland, Eric Olivas

Biology ETDs

Drought can flip ecosystems between states and in the process alter key systems such as plant biomass and carbon balance. Many drought-related studies have focused on plant responses or charismatic megafauna. Less work has addressed drought in the context of aboveground-belowground feedbacks. Impacts of drought are increasing, particularly in arid environments such as the southwestern United States. Major tree species of these regions, such as piñon pine, are adapted to a wetter and more predictable climate than the projected future climate. The effects of drought on piñon and its ectomycorrhizae have been studied observationally and in laboratories. Soil depth has …

Mammals Of The Greater Gila Region, Amanda K. Jones Jul 2016

Mammals Of The Greater Gila Region, Amanda K. Jones

Biology ETDs

The Greater Gila Region is an important area for study of mammals due to its unique physiographic history, leading to high elevational relief and many associated habitats. Due to the variety of habitats, the Gila is home to a very diverse assemblage of mammal fauna: 100 native species, 95 of which are extant in the region. This paper documents these species' current and historic distributions, taxonomy, habitat affinities, current phylogeographic studies, reproductive timing, and any other pertinent information. In addition, novel phylogeographic studies for four selected species were performed to fill in gaps in previous studies where Gila sampling was …

A Multidimensional Investigation Of The Niche: Geographic Distributions, Body Size, And Interspecific Interactions Of Late Quaternary North American Canidae, Melissa Irene Pardi Jul 2016

A Multidimensional Investigation Of The Niche: Geographic Distributions, Body Size, And Interspecific Interactions Of Late Quaternary North American Canidae, Melissa Irene Pardi

Biology ETDs

A pressing conservation challenge is understanding how organisms will be impacted by climate change. From the paleontological record, we know organisms have options when facing change: they can do nothing, move, or adapt. These responses shape an organism's niche (a foundational concept in biology) that is abiotically constrained, but modified by biotic interactions. The greatest disturbances in recent North American geologic history is the human mediated extinction of megafauna ~11,700 years B.P. and climate change following the last glacial period. We used the fossil record to address ecological questions concerning conservationists; our focus was on Canidae and humans. Species distribution …

Junot Díaz’S The Brief, Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao And Its Punishment Of Failed Gender Performances, Bruno Yupanqui Tovar Jul 2016

Junot Díaz’S The Brief, Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao And Its Punishment Of Failed Gender Performances, Bruno Yupanqui Tovar

Masters Theses

Junot Díaz’s renowned novel, The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Oscar Wao), presents the brief and wondrous life of its main character, Oscar Wao, but also describes the exceptional lives of Lola and Belicia, his sister and mother, respectively. While the story’s title asserts an enthusiastic tone to the lives of Oscar—and the females in his family—the story actually reveals the victimization and demise of these characters. Though Díaz offers the spell of Fukú americanus, a Dominican superstition, Feminist Theorist Judith Butler provides a more advantageous, concrete explanation for the subjugation of these characters. Butler argues that culture dictates …
