Animal Grieving And Human Mourning, Matteo Colombo
Animal Grieving And Human Mourning, Matteo Colombo
Animal Sentience
King’s How animals grieve beautifully describes several ways in which animals and humans show a similar capacity for grief. Yet this book does not sufficiently emphasise the language-empowered capacity to objectify thinking and sentiments about death, which makes human mourning unique. Here I put this capacity into focus and relate it to the social-normative aspect of human mourning that seems to be missing in other animals.

Biosentinel: A 6u Nanosatellite For Deep Space Biological Science, Hugo Sanchez, James Chartres, Robert Hanel, Sharmila Bhattacharya, Antonio Ricco, Matthew Dortenzio
Small Satellite Conference
BioSentinel is a "6U" (10 x 22 x 34 cm; 14 kg) nanosatellite flying as a secondary payload aboard NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) Exploration Mission (EM) 1, scheduled for launch in 2018. BioSentinel measures the damage and repair of DNA in a biological organism and compares that to information to onboard physical radiation sensors. In order to understand the relative contributions of the space environment's two dominant biological perturbations, reduced gravity and ionizing radiation, results from deep space will be compared to data obtained in LEO (on ISS) and a ground control on Earth. These data points allow the …

Neorickettsia (Rickettsiales, Anaplasmataceae) is a genus of obligate intracellular bacterial endosymbionts of digeneans (Platyhelminthes, Digenea). Some Neorickettsia are able to invade cells of the digenean's vertebrate host and are known to cause diseases of domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. In this study we report the results of screening digenean samples for Neorickettsia collected from bats in Egypt and Mindoro Island, Philippines, snails and fishes from Thailand, and fishes from Vietnam and the USA. Neorickettsia were detected using a real-time PCR protocol targeting a 152bp fragment of the heat shock protein coding gene, GroEL, and verified with nested PCR and sequencing …

Investigating The Role Of Anaerobic Bacteria In Colorectal Carcinoma, Oluwadara Coker
Investigating The Role Of Anaerobic Bacteria In Colorectal Carcinoma, Oluwadara Coker
Theses
Colorectal cancer (CRC), with multifactorial influences of genetic, molecular, inflammatory, and environmental factors, is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Due to the high diversity and concentration of microbes found in the human colon, the microbiome has become a prime suspect of being a biological contributor. This prompts the need to investigate the relationship between microorganisms and CRC. Recent studies have shown that Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter showae, Leptrotrichia buccalis, and Selenomonas sputigena are overrepresented in colon tumors. These anaerobes have known associations to the oral microbiome and cause infections. Here, these findings are further expanded in an experimental attempt to …

Can A Speaker Of Syllable-Timed L1 (Spanish) Recognize The Stress-Timed Pattern Of The English Language?, Masooma Naqvi
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This is an action-based case study focusing on the ability of a Spanish speaking adult female learner (Lucy) to recognize her incorrect sentence stress in English and recognize what the target stress pattern should be. Following a pre and post-test procedure to collect data over the course of four consecutive once-a-week sessions the participant of the study is interviewed and recorded on the first and the last session while the sessions in between are interventional. The results of the study revealed that adult learners of English are able to recognize and be aware of the English sentence stress pattern but …

Quantifying the role that freshwater ecosystems play in the global carbon cycle requires accurate measurement and scaling of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal in river networks. We reviewed reach‐scale measurements of DOC uptake from experimental additions of simple organic compounds or leachates to inform development of aquatic DOC models that operate at the river network, regional, or continental scale. Median DOC uptake velocity (vf) across all measurements was 2.28 mm min−1. Measurements using simple compound additions resulted in faster vf (2.94 mm min−1) than additions of leachates (1.11 mm min−1). We also reviewed published data of DOC bioavailability for ambient …
Insects Join The Consciousness Fray, Bjorn H. Merker
Insects Join The Consciousness Fray, Bjorn H. Merker
Animal Sentience
Klein & Barron's review of recent insect neurobiology helps correct the impression that insect behavior is orchestrated without the benefit of central integrative mechanisms. Given their existence, the authors go on to ask whether these central mechanisms also feature the kind of integrative operations that support sentience, and propose that they do. Along the way they raise a number of conceptual and evidentiary issues of fundamental importance for the neuroscience of consciousness, allowing me to comment favorably on a number of them. I conclude by pointing to ways in which the conception of insect sentience they outline might be tested …

Identifying Genetic Risk Factors For Coronary Artery Angiographic Stenosis In A Genetically Diverse Population, Zhi Liu
Open Access Dissertations
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death world-wide. It is a multifactorial genetic disease with an estimated heritability of 40%. Many genetic studies had been performed on CAD, but they explained only 10% of the total heritability, partially due to most of these studies were performed on Europeans only. Admixed populations, such as Hispanics, were understudied, despite their higher risks of CAD than Europeans. To explain additional heritability of CAD, 2023 individuals were ascertained from the Miami Cardiovascular Registry catheterization labs, which were representative of the South Florida population – a mixture of Hispanics, Europeans, and African …
A Model For Emerging Infectious Disease/Disaster Preparedness Training For Nursing Students, Susana Barroso
A Model For Emerging Infectious Disease/Disaster Preparedness Training For Nursing Students, Susana Barroso
Open Access Dissertations
Disasters can occur due to natural events or environmental accidents, or they can be purposeful and man-made. Regardless of how they occur, disasters place extraordinary stresses on society’s ability to deal with the catastrophic effects. Given the prevalence of disasters and infectious disease pandemics, there is an urgent need to improve education of healthcare providers. Because nurses comprise the largest percentage of healthcare providers and are early disaster responders, disaster preparedness is critical. Some studies have shown that an education gap exists between nursing school curricula and the expectations of nurses and nursing faculty with regard to disaster preparedness. While …

Moral Injury In Contemporary Ethics: The Application Of A Socratic Idea, Heleana Theixos
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is an investigation of the Socratic moral claim that being a moral wrongdoer is worse for the wrongdoer than it is for the victim. Chapter One investigates this moral claim in the context of Plato’s Gorgias and the historical Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen. Chapter Two brings the ancient conception into contemporary ethics into a typology of what the ancient concept looks like in contemporary ethics. Chapter Three prepares for an investigation of a certain moral wrongdoer, the military interrogator/ torturer and wrongdoing, by first examining a standard torture hypothetical, the Ticking Time Bomb. All three chapters work together …

Long-Term Overstory Vegetation Responses To Prescribed Fire Management For Longleaf Pine At Big Thicket National Preserve, Deanna M. Boensch
Student Publications
At the western edge of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) range, federal land managers have burned the forests of Big Thicket National Preserve to bring back the structure and diversity of the longleaf pine forest. In the early 1990’s, a four year study was conducted by Rice University, and the National Park Service continued monitoring the study’s fire ecology research plots. After two decades of data collection, ordination was applied to species abundance data to examine changes in vegetation communities from a variety of prescribed fire treatments and controls. The vegetation data was separated by size class to …

Development And Characterization Of Oxygen Sensitive Microbial Biosensors, Jonathan Lee
Development And Characterization Of Oxygen Sensitive Microbial Biosensors, Jonathan Lee
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
Microbial biosensors are useful in detecting suboptimal conditions in a bioreactor. This detection can help in development of improved mixing methods to reduce the occurrence of these conditions. In this research, the activities of 3 promoters known to have activity under anaerobic conditions, the gadB promoter, an FNR protein activated promoter, and the pfl promoter, were tested for activity under anaerobic conditions by connecting them to a green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. Using two types of media, Luria-Bertani (LB) and Wilms-Reuss media, the activity of these promoters under aerobic and anaerobic conditions were tested. Results indicate that while the FNR …

Prenatal Cocaine Exposure Upregulates Bdnf-Trkb Signaling, Andreas Stucky, Kalindi P. Bakshi, Eitan Friedman, Hoau-Yan Wang
Publications and Research
Prenatal cocaine exposure causes profound changes in neurobehavior as well as synaptic function and structure with compromised glutamatergic transmission. Since synaptic health and glutamatergic activity are tightly regulated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling through its cognate tyrosine receptor kinase B (TrkB), we hypothesized that prenatal cocaine exposure alters BDNF-TrkB signaling during brain development. Here we show prenatal cocaine exposure enhances BDNF-TrkB signaling in hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFCX) of 21-day-old rats without affecting the expression levels of TrkB, P75NTR, signaling molecules, NMDA receptor—NR1 subunit as well as proBDNF and BDNF. Prenatal cocaine exposure reduces activity-dependent proBDNF and BDNF release …

Glycosyl transfer within the active site of an enzyme involves the arrangement of the gly-cosyl donor and glycosyl acceptor in close proximity to each other. To mimic this pro-cess, intramolecular glycosylations are carried out where the donor and acceptor are linked together via a spacer. Correct orientation, rigidity and position of the spacer play a vital role in the selectivity and yield of reactions in this “molecular clamp method”. Though current methodologies show promising results in terms of yield and selectivity, the need to synthesize different complexes to ensure selectivities in all types of glycosidic linkages is a large deterrent …

The Relationship Between Agriculture And The Environment, Elise Nicole Volz
The Relationship Between Agriculture And The Environment, Elise Nicole Volz
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Southern Minnesota is an agricultural hub, and there is a deeply rooted methodology when it comes to the techniques used to plant, grow, and harvest grain crops. These techniques have come under scrutiny as they are being accused of causing harm to the environment. As an alternative to these conventional agricultural techniques, sustainable agriculture provides an agricultural methodology that aims to grow crops in such a way that the environment is harmed a little as possible. This project was designed to determine awareness of sustainable agriculture among a group of students and develop a curriculum that allows students to explore …

The objective of this paper is to identify key ethical issues associated with biological sampling in Aboriginal populations in Canada and to recommend approaches that can be taken to address these issues. Our work included the review of notable biological sampling cases and issues. We examined several significant cases (Nuu-chah-nult people of British Columbia, Hagahai peoples of Papua New Guinea and the Havasupai tribe of Arizona) on the inappropriate use of biological samples and secondary research in Aboriginal populations by researchers. Considerations for biological sampling in Aboriginal communities with a focus on community-based participatory research involving Aboriginal communities and partners …
