Educational Practices in Kinesiology
Service-learning is widely used in adapted physical activity/education (APA/APE) courses to enhance student learning through community engagement. However, limited research has explored how the presence or absence of an APA/APE course influences students’ perceived learning, confidence, and engagement in inclusive physical activity settings. This quasi-experimental, cross-sectional study examined how course-enhanced and purely experiential models of a university-based APA service-learning program, PA PALS, shaped undergraduate students’ experiences. Students (N = 58) participated; 41.4% (n = 24) were concurrently enrolled in an APA/APE course (course-enhanced group), while 58.6% (n = 34) participated as volunteers (purely experiential group). A validated …

BACKGROUND: T-cell redirecting therapies, including T-cell engagers (TCEs) and Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T), are under investigation in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Despite their promising therapeutic potential, these therapies remain in early stages of development due to treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). This study aims to quantify the frequency and severity of adverse events in clinical trials with a pooled analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, CINHAL, Scopus, and Ovid was conducted to identify clinical trials evaluating TCEs or CAR-T in patients with mCRPC. Types and frequencies of TRAEs were collected and analyzed using a random-effects model. …
Values-Based Clinical Ethics: A New Model Of Health And Ethics Consultation For Patients Suffering In Extremis, Adam Trainer
Values-Based Clinical Ethics: A New Model Of Health And Ethics Consultation For Patients Suffering In Extremis, Adam Trainer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that contemporary clinical ethics is inadequately equipped to support patients suffering in extremis because it relies on an insufficiently discriminating account of health and a constrained model of moral reasoning. Drawing on Bernard Lonergan, it reconceives health as an emergent, multi-layered, heuristic notion shaped by biological, psychological, social, and existential goods. On that basis, it critiques principlism’s global applicability thesis and the undergirding claim that its principles form part of the common morality, arguing that this justificatory structure is philosophically insufficient and practically limited for clinical ethics in cases marked by profound suffering, moral plurality, and normative …
Bax Activation Through The N-Terminal Bh3-Like Domains Of Vdac1 And Vdac2, Autumn A. Peters
Bax Activation Through The N-Terminal Bh3-Like Domains Of Vdac1 And Vdac2, Autumn A. Peters
Honors Theses
Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDACs) are central to mitochondrial function by mediating metabolite diffusion across the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Two isoforms, VDACs 1 and 2, are also implicated in apoptosis based on interactions with Bcl-2 family proteins that control this process, including Bax and Bcl-xL. Activation of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax by interaction with ‘BH3-only’ proteins, such as Bim or Bid, induces MOM permeabilization to signal apoptosis, yet accumulating evidence indicates VDACs 1 and 2 may also affect Bax. We discovered that the VDAC N-terminal domains contain high sequence similarity to the conserved BH3 domains within Bcl-2 family members that …

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by an expanded CTG repeat in the DMPK gene, resulting in mutant transcripts that form expanded CUG (CUGexp) RNA foci and sequester muscleblind-like (MBNL) RNA-binding proteins. DM1 is multisystemic, with progressive worsening of disease manifestations in affected tissues. Disease progression is attributed to somatic expansion of the CTG repeats with age, resulting in production of CUGexp RNA with enhanced intrinsic toxicity due to increased MBNL sequestration. To determine the degree to which cardiac disease progression can occur independently of repeat expansion, we used a transgenic DM1 mouse model with inducible heart-specific expression of …

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a major mood disorder influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. While DNA methylation from peripheral tissues can reflect both genetic and environmental influences and reveal insights into disease biology, it remains understudied in BD. DNA methylation signatures may complement polygenic scores (PGS) and hold potential as biomarkers. Here, we conducted the largest epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of BD to date and evaluated the predictive value of polymethylation scores (PMS) in classifying case-control status.
Methods: DNA methylation from peripheral blood of 1729 cases and 1747 controls, comprising twelve cohorts, was obtained. We performed meta-analyses for …

Only recently have human postmortem brain studies of differential gene expression (DGE) associated with opioid overdose death (OOD) been published; sample sizes from these studies have been modest (N = 40-153). To increase statistical power to identify OOD-associated genes, we leveraged human prefrontal cortex RNA-seq data from four independent OOD studies and conducted a transcriptome-wide DGE meta-analysis (N = 272). Using a unified gene expression data processing and analysis framework across studies, we meta-analyzed 20, 098 genes and found 335 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by OOD status (false discovery rate < 0.05). Of these, 66 DEGs were among the list of 303 genes reported as OOD-associated in prior prefrontal cortex molecular studies (e.g., genes/gene families OPRK1, NPAS4, DUSP, EGR). The remaining 269 DEGs were not previously reported (e.g., NR4A2, SYT1, HCRTR2, BDNF). There was little evidence of genetic drivers for the observed differences in gene expression between opioid addiction cases and controls. Enrichment analyses for the DEGs across molecular pathway and biological process databases highlight an interconnected set of genes and pathways linked to orexin and tyrosine kinase receptors through MEK/ERK/MAPK signaling to affect neuronal plasticity.
Hydrogeochemistry Of Natural Acid Rock Drainage In The Tobacco Root Mountains Of Southwest Montana And Implications For Restoration, Josie Grigsby
Hydrogeochemistry Of Natural Acid Rock Drainage In The Tobacco Root Mountains Of Southwest Montana And Implications For Restoration, Josie Grigsby
Honors Theses
This study investigates the hydrogeochemistry of the East Fork of the South Boulder River (EFSBR) in the northern Tobacco Root Mountains, Madison County, Montana. The upper 5 km of the main stem of the EFSBR is acidic (pH < 5.5), and dissolved concentrations of several trace metals including Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn exceed chronic aquatic life standards by 2-3 orders of magnitude. Unsurprisingly, the EFSBR appears to be devoid of trout. Since no mining has taken place at the source areas of the acidic headwater streams, this phenomenon is referred to as Natural Acid Rock Drainage (NARD). High mountains (up to 10,500’) bounding the EFSBR valley harbor a number of potential small rock glaciers and other periglacial features that appear to influence the hydrogeology and chemistry of the watershed. The steady flow of cold water in the hot summer months, during the same time period that neighboring drainages are drying up, is hypothesized to be sourced from melting ground ice high in the headwater catchment. Additionally, rock glaciers can act as efficient chemical reactors where they exist in conjunction with acid-generating mineralized bedrock, affecting the severity of acidic drainage and associated metal concentrations. Neutralization of the acidic water by alkaline tributaries results in the precipitation of aluminum hydroxysulfate (basaluminite), which covers the streambed with a vivid white mineral coating and can act as a natural sink through adsorption of other toxic metals to its surface. Pristine catchments exhibiting NARD can provide water quality data and serve as reference sites for restoration projects at sites experiencing Acid Mine Drainage where historical data does not exist. As climate change continues to alter the natural environment, especially in polar and high elevation regions, severity and instances of NARD are predicted to continue to increase on a global scale. A deeper understanding of the processes driving NARD from studies focused on areas such as the EFSBR will provide guidance for protecting vulnerable aquatic ecosystems and managing water resources in mountain communities into the future, as well as insights into necessary changes to established remediation methods in watersheds experiencing acid mine drainage.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation is hypothesized to contribute to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) vulnerability. Few studies have examined inflammation shortly after trauma as a predictor of later PTSD symptoms. We examined whether inflammation from the emergency department (ED) post-trauma is associated with PTSD symptom severity over the following 6 months.
METHODS: Our sample included 742 AURORA participants, a longitudinal cohort of patients in 29 EDs across the United States after a traumatic stressor, followed up to 6 months. Plasma cytokines were assessed from a study blood draw in the ED: an inflammatory index (standardized sum of generally pro-inflammatory markers interleukin [IL]-6, …

We report on the randomized portion of the phase 2, open-label CheckMate 650 trial (NCT02985957), in which docetaxel-experienced, biologically male patients with chemotherapy-refractory metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer were randomized 2:2:1:2 to nivolumab 3 mg /kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg /kg (n = 73), nivolumab 1 mg /kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg /kg (n = 74), ipilimumab 3 mg /kg (n = 38), or cabazitaxel (n = 74). Primary endpoints were objective response rate and radiographic progression-free survival; key secondary endpoints included overall survival, prostate-specific antigen response rate, and safety. This portion of CheckMate 650 was not designed to statistically compare …
Gendered Politics Of Pictures: How Images In A Pakistani English Textbook Homogenize Female Identities, Liaquat Ali Channa
Gendered Politics Of Pictures: How Images In A Pakistani English Textbook Homogenize Female Identities, Liaquat Ali Channa
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative multimodal analytical study draws upon Kress and van Leeuwen’s ideas about pictures and problematizes textbooks of English that supposedly teach only English in Pakistan. It aims to understand the identities of an adult female as shown in the images of an English textbook. It uses Foucault’s theories of discourse and discursive formation, and a Vygotskian sociocultural view of the development of consciousness. By following Braun and Clarke (2006, 2019), all the pictures of the My English Book 4 are first analyzed thematically. Later, O’Toole’s (1994) method of analyzing pictures is employed for a detailed examination of a representative …

Hormonal Seed Primimg As A Sustainable Alternative To Pesticides, Oyekemi Oyetoro, Swayamjit Ray
Research and Creative Works Expo
This study investigates the use of hormonal seed priming with Methyl Jasmonate (MeJA) and Methyl Salicylic Acid (MeSA) as a sustainable alternative to synthetic pesticides. By inducing Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) and Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR), these treatments aim to prepare plant defenses for rapid response to future herbivory with reduced reliance on chemical applications. The research specifically explores the growth-defense trade off, evaluating how various hormonal concentrations impact both pest resistance and seedling vigor. The findings identify optimal priming protocols that balance robust protection against herbivores with the maintenance of primary vegetative growth

Brine Solidification And Metals Sequestration Using Lignocellulosics, Frank Kvietok
World of Coal Ash Proceedings
Coal ash has historically been used as a convenient, on-site solidification material for brines generated from flue gas desulfurization at power plants. As alternate utilization scenarios are developed for coal ash, lignocellulosic (wood-based) sorbents can serve as a highly efficient substitute for the solidification process. Results will be shared for a variety of different brine types: thermally reduced, thermally reduced and neutralized, and reverse osmosis. In addition to solidification performance, which demonstrated a 3-4x mass of liquid vs mass of sorbent factor, studies were conducted to quantify the strength of binding to the wood-based sorbent for a broad range of …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings
Stantec recently supported commissioning a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) Wastewater Treatment System in accordance with the 2020 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Effluent Limitations Guidelines (ELG) Rule, which requires that coal fired power plants meet their more stringent requirements by December 31, 2025. With the addition of the 2024 EPA ELG Rule, coal fired power plants will now be expected to move to zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems or permanently cease coal combustion by 2034. Due to this change, it is likely that coal fired power plants will be looking to design and install ZLD systems within the next decade. While …

Breaking The Cycle: The C.A.R.E. Manager Model To Address Intergenerational Incarceration, Amber Pelan, Miranda Jacobsen
Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
Generational incarceration is a significant social problem in which criminal justice involvement is repeated across multiple generations of the same family. Children of incarcerated parents face elevated risks of trauma, poverty, educational disruption, mental health challenges, and later justice system involvement. These patterns demonstrate that incarceration often harms the entire family rather than only the individual offender. This project examines why generational incarceration occurs and identifies strategies to interrupt the cycle. The project uses a literature review methodology to integrate criminological 4 theory, sociological research, and policy analysis. These theories explain how parental incarceration disrupts child development, weakens family bonds, …

Proactive Violence Prevention: A Universal Bi-Annual Violence-Needs Assessment Tool For Grades K-12, Millie Fritzler, Emily Linehan
Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
“Violence prevention begins in the high chair, not the electric chair” (Reiner, as cited in Davis et al., 2002). Two elements are essential to successful violence prevention: interventions that start early and interventions that are consistent (Davis et al., 2002; Dodge et al., 2015). The first five years are crucial for development; therefore, violence prevention needs to happen as early as possible to identify and address potential risk factors before harmful behaviors become reinforced (Davis et al., 2002).
