Data Associated With 'Forecasting Disturbance Effects On Wildlife: Tolerance Does Not Mitigate Effects Of Increased Recreation On Wild Lands', Benjamin P. Pauli, Robert J. Spaul, Julie A. Heath
MILES Data Sets
There is widespread evidence that human disturbance affects wildlife behavior, but long-term population effects can be difficult to quantify. Individual-based models (IBMs) offer a way to assess population-level, aggregate effects of disturbance on wildlife. We created Tolerance in Raptors and the Associated Impacts of Leisure Sports (TRAILS), an IBM that simulates interactions between recreationists and nesting raptors, to assess the effect of human disturbance on raptor populations and test if changes in tolerance to disturbance could mitigate negative consequences. We used behavioral and demographic data from golden eagles Aquila chrysaetos, and recreation activity data to parameterize TRAILS and simulate the …

Predicting Purpose: An Examination Of Early Predictors Of Progression And Career Choice Among First-Year Nursing Students, Iris Hinderliter
Predicting Purpose: An Examination Of Early Predictors Of Progression And Career Choice Among First-Year Nursing Students, Iris Hinderliter
Dissertations
The importance of socializing upper level nursing students into the nursing profession is well established in the literature, but less is known about the early predictors of progression and career choice among first-year nursing students using a career development framework. Understanding early predictors of progression, particularly for first generation and underrepresented minority college students, have important implications for diversifying the baccalaureate-prepared nursing pipeline, as well as for developing future career and educational interventions for program completion and student retention. This study utilized a cross-sectional, correlational design to examine predictive factors of progression and career choice among freshmen nursing students. While …

Characterization And Analysis Of Pcs1 Gene From Wheat, Haris Ahmed Khan, Ayaz Ahmad, Sehar Nawaz
Characterization And Analysis Of Pcs1 Gene From Wheat, Haris Ahmed Khan, Ayaz Ahmad, Sehar Nawaz
Journal of Bioresource Management
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is an important cereal crop grown worldwide on large areas. Yields of wheat are decreasing worldwide due to heavy metal contamination. A number of genes have been characterized as those that confer tolerance to cadmium stress. PCS1 is one of them. Phytochelatins have a key role in the detoxification of heavy metals in plants. However, the mechanism behind the detoxification remains unknown and wheat genes related to detoxification have not yet been identified. Here we report the isolation of cDNA encoding of phytochelatin synthase (PCS) from wheat (var. Galaxy 2013). The AtPCS1 cDNA sequence contained …

An Optimized Approach For Community Detection And Ranking, Matin Pirouz, Justin Zhan, Shahab Tayeb
Computer Science Faculty Research
Community structures and relation patterns, and ranking them for social networks provide us with great knowledge about network. Such knowledge can be utilized for target marketing or grouping similar, yet distinct, nodes. The ever-growing variety of social networks necessitates detection of minute and scattered communities, which are important problems across different research fields including biology, social studies, physics, etc. Existing community detection algorithms such as fast and folding or modularity based are either incapable of finding graph anomalies or too slow and impractical for large graphs. The main contributions of this work are twofold: (i) we optimize the Attractor algorithm, …

Splitting Nodes And Linking Channels: A Method For Assembling Biocircuits From Stochastic Elementary Units, Cameron Ferwerda, Ovidiu Lipan
Splitting Nodes And Linking Channels: A Method For Assembling Biocircuits From Stochastic Elementary Units, Cameron Ferwerda, Ovidiu Lipan
Physics Faculty Publications
Akin to electric circuits, we construct biocircuits that are manipulated by cutting and assembling channels through which stochastic information flows. This diagrammatic manipulation allows us to create a method which constructs networks by joining building blocks selected so that (a) they cover only basic processes; (b) it is scalable to large networks; (c) the mean and variance-covariance from the Pauli master equation form a closed system; and (d) given the initial probability distribution, no special boundary conditions are necessary to solve the master equation. The method aims to help with both designing new synthetic signaling pathways and quantifying naturally existing …
Groundwater Restoration Following In-Situ Leach Mining Of Uranium, Omar A. Ruiz Lopez
Groundwater Restoration Following In-Situ Leach Mining Of Uranium, Omar A. Ruiz Lopez
Civil Engineering ETDs
From 1950 to the early 1980’s New Mexico played an important role in the production of uranium (U) for the nuclear power industry and the nation’s weapon programs. Though the U mining and milling industry in New Mexico is inactive at present, increased interest in nuclear energy as a CO2 free power source has led to proposals for renewed development of U resources. In particular, U mining projects have been proposed using both underground mining and in situ leach (ISL) mining. When feasible, ISL mining minimizes waste by eliminating; mine waste, mine dewatering, radiation exposure and the recovered U …

An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Reef Fish Management In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michelle D. Masi
An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Reef Fish Management In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michelle D. Masi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fisheries managers have the potential to significantly improve reef fish management in the Gulf of Mexico through the use of ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management. Ecosystem-based approaches are needed to address the effects of fishing on trophodynamic interactions, to better account for ecosystem-scale processes in model projections, and to recognize the short and long-term biomass tradeoffs associated with making regulatory choices. My research was concentrated around three objectives: (1) characterizing the trophodynamic interactions between Gulf of Mexico fishes, in order to construct an invaluable tool (a Gulf of Mexico Atlantis model) to be used in ecological hypothesis testing and policy …

Historical Fire In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Forests Of South Mississippi And Its Relation To Land Use And Climate, Charles Raymond White, Grant L. Harley
Faculty Publications
We characterized historical fire regimes in Pinus palustris (longleaf pine) forests of southern Mississippi with regard to global and regional coupled climate systems (e.g., El Niño–Southern Oscillation) and past human activity. The composite fire chronology spanned 1756–2013 with 132 individual scars representing 89 separate fire events. The mean fire interval was 2.9 yr, and mean intervals were significantly different between identified time periods (e.g., settlement period vs. management period). Evidence of biannual fire activity (up to three fires occurring within a 12‐ to 15‐month period) was found coeval with a peak in livestock grazing and logging from the 1850s through …

Dielectric Characterization Of Mylar And The Effects Of Doping Processes, Cami B. Belcher
Dielectric Characterization Of Mylar And The Effects Of Doping Processes, Cami B. Belcher
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Mylar® polymer is a bi-axially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer film used widely as a dielectric, specifically in capacitors. The dielectric characteristics of Mylar have been well studied and documented over the years; however, many of the mechanisms responsible for dielectric breakdown and failure are not understood for modified versions of the material. Previous studies on Mylar confirm that factors such as temperature, humidity, and voltage ramp rates can also have a significant effect on the dielectric properties and measurement of the dielectric properties. This study seeks to determine how dielectric properties, including permittivity, dielectric loss, and breakdown strength, are …

Inhibition Of P73 Function By Pifithrin-Α As Revealed By Studies In Zebrafish Embryos, William R Davidson, Qing Ren, Gabor Kari, Ori Kashi, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Ulrich Rodeck
Bodine Journal
The p53 family of proteins contains two members that have been implicated in sensitization of cells and organisms to genotoxic stress, i.e., p53 itself and p73. In vitro, lack of either p53 or p73 can protect certain cell types in the adult organism against death upon exposure to DNA damaging agents. The present study was designed to assess the relative contribution of p53 to radiation resistance of an emerging vertebrate model organism, i.e., zebrafish embryos. Consistent with previous reports, suppressing p53 protein expression using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides (MOs) increased survival and reduced gross morphological alterations in zebrafish embryos exposed to …
