Development And Analysis Of Aluminum-Ptfe Reactive Composite Material, Siva Kumar Valluri
Development And Analysis Of Aluminum-Ptfe Reactive Composite Material, Siva Kumar Valluri
Theses
The shortcomings of micron sized aluminum due to the oxide barrier and two phase loses pose a hindrance for its efficient use as a fuel. In this study a fluoropolymer; Teflon’s inclusion in micron sized -325 mesh aluminum is suggested as a replacement to aluminum. Aluminum Teflon based energetic material see great potential for use in pyrotechnics, propellants and even explosives. A composite with composition Al-PTFE (90-10 wt. %) is prepared through Cryomilling and is shown to be a better method of preparation as compared to room temperature milling. The prepared materials are studied to identify best conditions. The analysis …
A Computational Model For Transdermal Diffusion Of Lidocaine And Tetracaine Topical Patches, Qian Dong
A Computational Model For Transdermal Diffusion Of Lidocaine And Tetracaine Topical Patches, Qian Dong
Theses
In recent years, transdermal drug delivery patches (TDDP) have developed rapidly. This is because the TDD system has more advantages than traditional drug delivery systems such as oral medicine and intravenous injection. In order to reach the circulatory system of the human body, drug molecules have to pass through the epidermis (outer layer) of the skin. The barrier properties of epidermis originate from low permeability of stratum corneum (SC) which is the outermost layer of the human skin. The objective of this thesis is to build a Finite Element (FE) model, utilizing commercial FE software (ANSYS), that can be implemented …

The Hagfish Gland Thread Cell: A Fiber-Producing Cell Involved In Predator Defense, Douglas S. Fudge, Sarah Schorno
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Fibers are ubiquitous in biology, and include tensile materials produced by specialized glands (such as silks), extracellular fibrils that reinforce exoskeletons and connective tissues (such as chitin and collagen), as well as intracellular filaments that make up the metazoan cytoskeleton (such as F-actin, microtubules, and intermediate filaments). Hagfish gland thread cells are unique in that they produce a high aspect ratio fiber from cytoskeletal building blocks within the confines of their cytoplasm. These threads are elaborately coiled into structures that readily unravel when they are ejected into seawater from the slime glands. In this review we summarize what is currently …

Incomes And Savings Of Polish Seniors In View Of Research Outcomes, Tomasz Zalega
Incomes And Savings Of Polish Seniors In View Of Research Outcomes, Tomasz Zalega
European Management Studies
The observed demographic changes involving mainly progressive ageing of the Polish population are leading to increased market importance of the senior consumer segment. One of the key criteria for evaluating the market attractiveness of segments is consumer purchasing power resulting from the income earned. It is disposable income that determines consumer behaviour on the market to the largest extent. The aim of this article is to present the financial situation of older people in Poland. The article consists of three parts. The first one focuses on conceptualisation of the research and characteristics of the research sample. In the second part, …

The Exceptionally High Reactivity Of Cys 621 Is Critical For Electrophilic Activation Of The Sensory Nerve Ion Channel Trpa1, Parmvir K. Bahia, Thomas A. Parks, Katherine R. Stanford, David A. Mitchell, Sameer Varma, Stanley M. Stevens Jr., Thomas E. Taylor-Clark
Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications
Activation of the sensory nerve ion channel TRPA1 by electrophiles is the key mechanism that initiates nociceptive signaling, and leads to defensive reflexes and avoidance behaviors, during oxidative stress in mammals. TRPA1 is rapidly activated by subtoxic levels of electrophiles, but it is unclear how TRPA1 outcompetes cellular antioxidants that protect cytosolic proteins from electrophiles. Here, using physiologically relevant exposures, we demonstrate that electrophiles react with cysteine residues on mammalian TRPA1 at rates that exceed the reactivity of typical cysteines by 6,000-fold and that also exceed the reactivity of antioxidant enzymes. We show that TRPA1 possesses a complex reactive cysteine …

Attitudes Towards Work In The Context Of The Age Of Employees, Wojciech Wychowaniec
European Management Studies
The aim of the article is to present the current research achievements regarding the differences and similarities between attitudes towards work among employees of different ages1. The research and analysis of differences in attitudes, manifested by the representatives of different generations, pose a number of methodological problems which can have a big impact on final conclusions. The text attempts to analyse intergenerational differences regarding: work in the hierarchy of values, work satisfaction, loyalty to the employer and flexibility for changes. The author did not conduct his own empirical research, as the aim of this article was to gather available results …

Through Magic Glasses, Katie Bullock
Masters Theses
For six years I have documented and chronicled phenomena I encounter in my life every day.
This compulsive habit began as a way to explore and study light and space. Over time this activity not only defined my practice, but became essential to the way I go about sensing and living my life.
Most of the phenomena occur in the periphery of my senses, and are documented in passing. They are comprised of familiar materials and objects, and illuminated in some way, by the sun, or a local source. Although they are made up of the commonplace, they manage to …

Dimensional Flatland: Beamer, Drone, Flash Drive, Scarlett Xin Meng
Masters Theses
The impact of the Internet and digitization is pervasive and pervious. Users constantly interface with a constructed virtual world of worlds, simulated by signs and representations. The web content appears to exist but only fades into oblivion. Digital imageries promise the HD real but can never be as phenomenal as our physical experience, and instead render an alternative fantasy of deceptive factuality. This is a hyperlinked network of data and pixel information that takes no solid permanent shape, and claims zero responsibility for altering and molding our consciousness in this technological fiction.

Risk Factors, Clinico-Pathologic Characteristics And Outcomes In Young Kenyan Female Patients With Breast Cancer In Akuh-N, Gilford Mutwiri Mwikamba
Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine
Background: Breast cancer in the young refers to a diagnosis of breast cancer in a female under the age of forty years. This is considered a distinct disease with different risk factors, biology, and prognosis. Young age at breast cancer diagnosis is reportedly more common among African-Americans. The highest proportion of breast cancer in the young has been reported in Africa. Early detection of breast cancer in Africa is hampered by lack of access to health care services, appropriate screening tools, and high cost of magnetic resonance imaging for the high risk groups. Despite a worse prognosis, management of breast …

Painting allows infinite scope for imaginative freedom beyond the ambiguity of the inner landscape. Painting connects the natural world outside to the inner natural world, allowing me to exist in the present while also reconciling childhood meanings. It brings me alive, allowing me to find a new identity. No longer trapped within the repressive structures of family, rigid schooling, and culture, the language of sky, land, mountain, and water become living metaphors of limitless possibilities with forms and color. My paintings are abstract, but they also present me as a character, independent and emerging from the environment. The work explores …

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
The concept of sustainable development, and thus the evolution of the economics of sustainable development, became the subject of increased interest of researchers and businesses after the first UN Conference in Stockholm in 1972, and then after the second Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro two decades later. It is at the second Earth Summit with its “Environment and Development” motto, which was attended officially by 172 countries and approximately 2400 representatives of non-governmental organisations, where unsustainable consumption and production were recognised as the most important causes of growing global development problems. Attempts were made to find models of sustainable …
Prevalence Of Hepatic Steatosis As Diagnosed On Unenhanced Abdominal Ct, Naushad H. Karim Sokwalla
Prevalence Of Hepatic Steatosis As Diagnosed On Unenhanced Abdominal Ct, Naushad H. Karim Sokwalla
Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Background: Hepatic steatosis is the accumulation of triglycerides within hepatocytes. It may be broadly classified into alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, whereby non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is steatosis secondary to causes such as steatogenic medication. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis of hepatic steatosis. However, it is invasive and may potentially suffer from sampling errors. Hepatic steatosis may be diagnosed on unenhanced CT if the hepatic attenuation is less than 40 HU, or if the attenuation of the liver is at least 10 HU less than the spleen. Over the past three decades, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease …

You Can't Remain Neutral On A Moving Train – Marriage Equality In The States & Ireland: Thoughts On Freedom To Marry, Religious Heteronormativity, And Conceptions Of Equality, Kris Mcdaniel-Miccio
DePaul Journal of Women, Gender and the Law
This title, in part, was one of the famous phrases uttered by the brilliant historian Howard Zinn, a wonderful image that applies to advocating social justice. In the United States, the train referenced by Zinn was the Freedom Train, whether it be toward gender, racial or ethnic parity. Now it is the Freedom to Marry Train and it has not only left the station, it is moving at break- neck speed and almost unstoppable. This Train built with the blood, sweat and tears of the LGBTI community, forged by fire and situated on a justified track. There is no difference …

Mitochondria Mediates Caspase-Dependent And Independent Retinal Cell Death In Staphylococcus Aureus Endophthalmitis, Pawan K. Singh, Ashok Kumar
Ophthalmology Faculty Research Publications
Bacterial endophthalmitis, a vision-threatening complication of ocular surgery or trauma, is characterized by increased intraocular inflammation and retinal tissue damage. Although significant vision loss in endophthalmitis has been linked to retinal cell death, the underlying mechanisms of cell death remain elusive. In this study, using a mouse model of Staphylococcus aureus endophthalmitis and cultured human retinal Müller glia (MIO-M1 cell line), we demonstrate that S. aureus caused significant apoptotic cell death in the mouse retina and Müller glia, as evidenced by increased number of terminal dUTP nick end labeling and Annexin V and propidium iodide-positive cells. Immunohistochemistry and western blot …
Traversing Languagescapes, Desmond Pang
Traversing Languagescapes, Desmond Pang

Masters Theses
Context Clues explores the tensions between identity and appearance, especially as it relates to queer identities and the bodies that carry them.
It assumes that identity and appearance aren’t always straight forward or line up in expected ways.
It aims to expose our discomfort about this uncertainty.
It explores how we look at and evaluate others; what we observe and what we fill in.
It compares how we look at others and how we look to others.
It critiques the absurdity of how people perceive and interact with each other, by putting them in uncomfortable scenarios and exaggerating awkward situations. …
